Marlins Designate Tim Anderson For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 2, 2024 at 1:40pm CDT

1:40pm: The Marlins have made it official, announcing Anderson’s DFA and the recall of Edwards, with the latter starting at shortstop tonight.

10:48am: Edwards will indeed be recalled to take Anderson’s spot on the roster, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

10:28am: The Marlins have designated infielder Tim Anderson for assignment, reports Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald. The team has not yet formally announced the move.

Anderson, 31, was Miami’s lone major league signing in free agency this past offseason. He inked a one-year, $5MM contract on the heels of what was then a career-worst .245/.286/.296 showing in his final season with the White Sox — the only organization he’s ever known. Both Anderson and the Marlins envisioned a rebound of some extent — if not to the outstanding .318/.347/.473 slash he posted in 2019-22, then at least to the point where he’d reclaim his status as a viable regular in a big league infield.

Instead, Anderson’s production has dipped even further. He’s posted career-worst marks in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and strikeout rate — all while delivering the second-worst walk rate of his career. In 241 plate appearances, Anderson is batting .214/.237/.226 with no home runs, a 28.2% strikeout rate and a 2.9% walk rate. Of the 230 hitters this season who’ve tallied at least 200 plate appearances, none has a lower wRC+ than Anderson’s mark of 31 (which indicates he’s been 69% worse than league-average at the plate).

While the Marlins technically have as many as five days to trade Anderson, the overwhelming likelihood is that he’ll simply be released. A team isn’t going to claim the remainder of this season’s salary if he’s placed on waivers, and that contract plus Anderson’s play over the past two seasons renders him without any trade value. Once he’s cleared release waivers, he’ll be free to sign with any club on a minor league or big league deal. A new team would owe Anderson only the prorated league minimum for any days spent on the MLB roster or injured list. That sum would be subtracted from what Miami is required to pay out, but the Fish are on the hook for the majority of his salary regardless.

Anderson’s departure for the roster will clear playing time for younger hitters like Vidal Brujan and perhaps Xavier Edwards. Brujan, once one of the game’s top prospects in Tampa Bay, is hitting .238/.306/.343 in 157 plate appearances with Miami but has received sparse playing time. Edwards, another former Rays prospect, has spent the bulk of the season in Triple-A Jacksonville and is hitting .330/.376/.450 in 119 trips to the plate. It’s a small sample that’s buoyed by a huge .361 average on balls in play, but Edwards is making tons of contact (9.2% strikeout rate). His bat-to-ball skills and speed have long been his calling cards, and at this juncture there’s little reason for a team in Miami’s situation not to take a look at someone like Edwards and/or Brujan over Anderson.

However, no, he didn’t single handedly lose the game.

          Not close

First, and most obviously, Bill Buckner is not Tim Andereon.

Beyond that, Shiraldi and Stanley gave up three hits and a wild pitch that contributed something to the loss.

Sucked punched from a player bending over looking at his shoes. No look haymaker it was called. Rameriz could have punched one of his own players if they wasnt paying attention. Nobody every mentions the fact that Anderson got the punch in 1st that made Rameriz look at his shoes. It’s all good though, just thought I’d clear that up because most people here never seen the entire brawl only that highlight of Anderson getting punched. Ramirez was just waling hoping he hit someone. Try watching the entire fight

He was a career minor leaguer who had like 3 hot weeks early in the season. Every year there are guys like him. Trying to act like his career was “ruined” because he got yelled at for being an idiot in a blowout had nothing to do with it.

I don’t agree what LaRussa said about Mercedes, but I highly doubt the difference between Mercedes continuing to hit at the rate he did in April and early May of that year (or even good at all) vs falling off dramatically were a few choice words from LaRussa. There’s probably a reason he didn’t get extended playing time until he was 28, has yet to get another shot since, and I doubt it’s soley because of LaRussa.

One, nobody said LaRussa isn’t a good guy. Two, nobody called Mercedes a punk. LaRussa isn’t a good guy and was way past his prime when he came in to manage the White Sox. Probably one of the worst managerial tenures in recent baseball history. But pinning all the blame of a career minor leaguer not sustaining a month and a quarter of success on LaRussa is a bit overboard. Why isn’t part of the blame toward the hittng coach for not helping Mercedes adjust and adapt once pitchers figured him out?

In th 50 plate appearances prior to the homer against Minnesota, Mercedes was only hitting .244/.306/.311

          AA Cardinals,

Tony LaRussa was a fantastic manager for your Cardinals, but with the White Sox, the man became indifferent and bitter. His press conferences were a clear sign that he did not care anymore. Not disrespecting him and his body of work, just pointing out his time with the White Sox was not a great experience.

La Russa always had an air of arrogance around him but it got a lot worse here with the Angels where he was a front office assistant before heading to the White Sox.

When he got his DUI here he pulled the “do you know who I am” card on the cop and was reportedly belligerent.

I was surprised when Chicago handed him the job of guiding a pretty young team.

Are we thinking of the same Tim Anderson. This Tim Anderson is a punk and was so divisive in the clubhouse the White Sox couldn’t wait for him to leave. There is no doubt in Chicago that when Tony LaRussa was awake in the dugout those two could not stand each other.

I’ll say this: When you put your fists up in a fighting position, you are a fool if you get blindsided by a punch. So either TA is a punk wuss, or a fool that puts his fists up and doesn’t expect any punches thrown. Take your pick.

I would also suggest that treating everyone the same does nothing to motivate better behavior.

There won’t be a single person ever that will miss the pizza parlor kids.

Without that athleticism there’s not enough there to keep him in the league it seems

I’m not sure if there will be a taker on a minor league deal. He lost his power, no longer hits for average or plays a good defensive SS. The chances of him returning to form at this point are slim to none. He doesn’t seem like a mentor type either. At this point, he’d be more of a distraction and would take away AB’s from someone who may have a future.

One home run last season, none this season, and only three doubles in 2024. No longer a .300 hitter, no longer stealing bases, and has never been a good shortstop. Anderson has zero value right now in MLB, but I’m sure some team will still take a flyer on him, either this season or in Spring Training 2025. The question is if Anderson is willing to sign and play in the minors while he tries to figure out how to be a productive player again…

In his defense, how can you possibly be motivated when you’ve played with two terrible organizations who are continually at the bottom of their leagues and at the bottom in attendance? Slider – your point about the franchise situation notwithstanding, the answer is simple: (1) professional getting paid lots of money to play a game or (2) a l professional athlete with an j term Al competitive fire to excel.

Mike Tomlin was quoted once regarding professional football players needing to be motivated – paraphrasing here but something like: “if I have to motivate them, they won’t be here long.”

How did he go so bad seemingly overnight two years ago? Same with Javy Baez? I don’t think it’s injury. I think it’s mental health that led to a loss of confidence that ruined their careers. Anderson is never playing again after this. Baez robbed Detroit for that huge contract but I don’t expect to see him play again either.

I watched him in person play against the Braves and it was like watching an unmotivated slob sad to be on a mlb field. I know the marlins can do that to a guy, but lord, he was so good not so long ago. Curious what environment can spark that fire in him. A contender on the bench? Is he too much in his own head to be a bench guy for a team?

Bo should make a note on the fragility of a career. one day you’re turning down multi year overtures and the next thing you know, you’re a DFA item on MLBTR.

Good comparison. Free swingers don’t age well these days. Puig and Javy Baez are recent examples. You can get away with going up to the plate and hacking at anything close for so long. Once the analysts peg you, and you make no adjustments, it’s over. It may already be over for Bichette, but we’ll find out soon enough.

Used to be Jackie Robinson. Turned into Jackie Bradley. Oh well, couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

Those high K/W guys seldom survive. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone with a .399. ..383, and .372 BABIP over three consecutive seasons.

There’s about 800 more deserving players of a roster spot than Tim Anderson.

Please Dodgers stay away frm this move, rather have incompetent Biggio. Anderson’s done, he fell off a cliff performance wise. Sum dudes hit a wall hard w/alota miles on those bodies.

I’m sure the Dodger F/O is grateful for your advice. This is really the F/O’s weakness – picking up guys off the scrapheap and straightening them out. Random dude from the internet certainly knows better

Not a White Sox fan, but enjoyed him in his prime. Seems like he needs a break, in the time away and the right situation meanings of that word, so maybe he goes to KBO or a Japanese team and turns it around. Then he comes back, signs for the minimum with the Rangers (or your favorite team) and is a feel good story.

Could very well be cooked though as it’s been just painful to watch for last couple of years. Here’s to the positive outcome though.

Abreu, Anderson and Cueto are all available, and the Sox could easily find slots for them for the balance of the year. Could they be any worse than the players the Sox already have? How much does it matter if the Sox lose 110 or 120 games? For sure these 3 additions would boost attendance, especially if the team sells off anybody of value in July.
