In a recent column at The New York Post, Jon Heyman looks at some notable players that could be dealt prior to the deadline. Heyman lists Rays infielder Isaac Paredes and says that “his name is out there more” than his teammate, outfielder Randy Arozarena.
It’s unsurprising that Paredes would come up in trade talks, both because of his performance and the way the Rays operate. Since being acquired from the Tigers ahead of the 2022 season, Paredes has hit 66 home runs in his 1,325 plate appearances. He’s also drawn walks at an 11% clip and kept his strikeout rate down to a rate of 17.7%. All that amounts to a wRC+ of 131, indicating he’s been 31% better than league average in that time.
On top of that offense, he’s provided defensive versatility, bouncing around to all four infield spots. Most of his time has been at third base, where he has racked up four Defensive Runs Saved and two Outs Above Average since coming to Tampa. His shortstop workload has been just 11 innings but he’s spent decent chunks of time at second and first base as well, with passable grades.
Now 25 years old, he just reached arbitration for the first time in the most recent offseason as a Super Two player. He’s making $3.4MM this year and is slated for three more passes through the arbitration system in the seasons to come.
With the combination of his skills, his affordability and his club control, of course clubs are interested. Those same traits also make him valuable to the Rays but there are also reasons to imagine he could be pried loose from Tampa.
The Rays, in general, trade key players before they reach free agency. It’s usually just a matter of when. With Paredes, there is no strict hurry because the club has those three extra years of control, but his trade value will only go down from here as his salary rises and his window of control shrinks.
The club isn’t in clear seller mode at 46-47, just below .500. But they are 5.5 games back of a playoff spot and could perhaps lean a bit more to the sell side, making certain players available without necessarily tanking their chances here in 2024. They already made one such move out of their rotation, trading Aaron Civale to the Brewers but quickly replacing him by recalling Shane Baz.
Amed Rosario and José Caballero are each on the roster and have a bit of third base experience. Curtis Mead has been hitting well in Triple-A since being optioned earlier this year. There’s also Junior Caminero, one of the top prospects in the league. He’s missed a lot of this year due to quad strains but recently began a rehab assignment. Austin Shenton, Osleivis Basabe and Jonathan Aranda are also on the 40-man, although Aranda is currently out with an oblique strain.
The Rays always have some degree of openness to trading a player approaching free agency and then replacing him a younger and/or cheaper version. Paredes would be an extreme example since he’s still fairly affordable and has plenty of control left, but perhaps there are factors making the front office consider it. The Playoff Odds at FanGraphs only give the Rays a 13.4% shot of cracking the postseason this year, with the PECOTA Standings at Baseball Prospectus even less optimistic at 8.9%.
They are not totally buried but perhaps they might look at their long odds and decide to prioritize the future by exchanging Paredes for whatever haul of prospects he could bring back. If Caminero or someone else can come up and replace a portion of Paredes’ production, their chances of making a late run here in 2024 wouldn’t even drop by all that much.
As always, the likelihood of a trade actually happening will depend on what kinds of offers are put on the table. The relative lack of attractive infield trade candidates could work in Tampa’s favor. Jazz Chisholm Jr. seems likely to be moved but he’s mostly been in the outfield lately, meaning a club eyeing him as an infield solution would be taking on risk in putting him back on the dirt. Luis Rengifo would draw interest but he’s currently on the injured list and the Angels are reportedly leaning towards hanging onto controllable guys. Players like Gio Urshela, Brendan Rodgers and Paul DeJong could be available as well but aren’t likely to generate much excitement.
Contending clubs such as the Dodgers, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Mariners, Red Sox and others could all be on the lookout for infield help between now and the July 30 deadline. With few attractive options on the block, it’s understandable that Paredes is coming up in conversations. Perhaps the market conditions, the Rays’ depth and their position in the standings could all work to push a deal over the line in the coming weeks.

Paredes, YOU are a Houston Astro!
User 401527550
The Astros have nothing to offer for him.
hllywdjff
Parades you are a Seattle Mariner! Harry Ford Micheal Morales and Emerson Hancock for Parades and Adam
RyanD44
I absolutely see the Cubs making Paredes their #1 target. He’d be their most powerful bat in their lineup, as sad as that is. He’s controllable too, so he won’t come cheap. Trading with the Rays is always a risk for severe embarrassment in the front office baseball community.
Zippy the Pinhead
If by “Adam,” you mean Arozarena, then I’m in.
mp2891
Not nearly enough value hlly. I kind of like Paredes for Ford, Brash and A.Smith.
Motor City Beach Bum
And they have this dude named Bergman at 3B.
mlb1225
Bregman is only controlled through this year. Paredes can play 1B. If the Astros aren’t able to resign Bregman, then Paredes can shift back over to the hot corner next year. If they do, then they have 2 good corner infielders.
Motor City Beach Bum
Like most Tigers fans, I’m pretty aware of what Paredes can do having had to suffer through watching him succeed after the ill fated Austin Meadows trade. Houston would do well to sign him since the Tigers are signing Bregman in the offseason 😉 Like you say they would have to install him at 1B which is not a position he has played a lot at. Cheers dude.
stymeedone
I hope you are right, but I don’t see Chris I opening up the pocketbook that wide.
Motor City Beach Bum
Likely wishful thinking on my part but it would really help the offense to add some vets.
warnbeeb
Tigers will not sign Bregman.
Motor City Beach Bum
Why not? You figure they’ll go with Jung and Vierling next year? I could see that too. Bregman’s getting older but on a 3 year deal maybe? Not sure what he’s shooting for.
warnbeeb
Bregman is in decline. I’ll be surprised if anyone gives him 3 years, guaranteed.
Motor City Beach Bum
I think Houston will likeky re-sign him. I saw someone talking about him and Tucker today and they said its more likely he gets signed because he’ll cost less on a shorter deal. I’d be good if the Tigers added him on a short term deal though. They need some proven veteran bats.
kylelohse
Rays have now turned Chris Archer into Paredes, Shane Baz, Ryan Pepiot, and Johnny Deluca. Will be interesting to see what the next pieces are.
User 401527550
Why would you throw Johnny DeLuca on that list? When’s he getting released?
kylelohse
Why do you think. He is literally one of the players who have been acquired as a result of the Archer trade. I didn’t suggest they are all superstars. And he’s not getting released anytime soon.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Don’t forget that archer wouldn’t be here if delmon young wasn’t traded
It all ties to the Delmon young trade
stymeedone
And don’t forget they traded Kevin Bacon to get Delmon. Like everything, it all ties back to Kevin Bacon!
alwaysgo4two
Deluca is a highly regarded talent back to his Dodgers days. Problem is that Cash has an affection for him even though he’s far from mlb ready it appears. Needs more AAA.
User 401527550
The man is 26. How many years you going to give him to develop because he was highly regarded? Lots of players were highly regarded that didn’t pan out.
Card AG
He wasn’t part of that trade or am I missing something
Tigers3232
@Card Delmon Young was part of Garza deal. Garza was part of deal when Rays acquired Archer.
dshires4
I know the Mariners need any and all help possible, but his underlying metrics are so terrifying. Third worst exit velocity among qualified hitters, fifth lowest hard-hit rate among same group, and bottom third in the league in finding the barrel. I just can’t shake the feeling that it’s a mirage, and the bubble eventually has to burst.
jamaicajan
Agree. And as an M’s fan, this is the move I’m really hoping the FO passes on.
mlb1225
Look at his spray chart. He’s yet to even go to center field with a home run, let alone the opposite way. Tropicana Field is 315 feet down the line with a short fence in the LF corner, which Parades has more than once snuck home runs over. T-Mobile is 331 down the line with a tall wall in left.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Don’t forget that he plays in a dome and Seattle is right at sea level where balls go to die
There’s a reason why Seattle hasn’t had a 470 foot home run yet
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
If we traded for him (probably for a kings ransom like the Castillo trade where it’s overpay) then I would be afraid that paredes fixes nothing and starts hitting .150 with no power
I wonder why hitters do horrible in Seattle why is Jorge Polanco and Mitch garv and Haniger doing horrible
hllywdjff
Or hes putting up very good numbers in spite of that and can only get better as he gets older….I’m more inclined to think that way
dshires4
I mean that’s absolutely within the realm of possibilities but his EV and HardHit% have gone down, not up, during his time in the leagues. It’s just not a trustworthy profile.
LaBellaVita
Wouldn’t the M’s trade for Randy Arozarena or Yandy Diaz so that they can replace Ty France? (Arozarena allows Luke Raley to play first.)
mp2891
Dshire – That mirage has existed for 3 years now. I’ll take Paredes every day of the week over the guys who don’t perform but have the sexy underlying stats (e.g., C.Morel of the Cubs).

larry48
I would not want Jazz Chisholm he is not a team player and a cancer in club house.
gravel
@larry48
“Not a team player.”
Learning a new position because the team needs you to do so appears to counter this.
“A cancer in the club house.”
I am willing to be corrected about this by someone knowledgeable about the Marlin’s club house and maybe that is you Larry. It appears to me whenever a player plays with exuberance they get tagged with “cancer in the club house” especially if they are not white.
Tigers3232
@Gravel You are spot on here. Larry48 says it all. They are always subtle signs of the old white males, remnants of a bygone era where bigotry and hate were very prevalent. Fortunately for humanity attrition will take care of the problem.
User 401527550
Another racist blaming white people for Jazz Chisholm having problems with other Hispanic players in his locker his first three years with the Marlins. White men have nothing to do with this but your hatred and bigotry are running prevalent.
gravel
Hi Mets6986,
I asked for insight and received whatever your mouth breathing frothing could provide. You did provide insight, but not into Jazz’s situation.
User 401527550
I know all you can do is accuse everyone of racism. I guess white peoples aren’t allowed to even talk no more are else else we are “mouth breathing frothing”. The point is Chisolm has had problems in his dugout no matter what your false accusations of racisms claim. No one cares about his race. We all have a players from all over world we route for and would love for our teams to secure and because we don’t route for one doesn’t mean anything at all.
User 401527550
Jazz Chizalm had problems with players in his dugout and they most certainly weren’t white but I’m glad you were racist and blamed all white people for his clubhouse dramas on white men that weren’t even apart of it.
Tigers3232
@Mets Why font u provide a link to something substaniating this claim.
User 401527550
Don’t you think you should have asked for that first before calling people white racists? So you are admitting you have no knowledge on the topic but got on her accusing people of racism?
User 401527550
Direct quote from Chisholm
I hated my first three seasons in the big leagues, hated 2020, 2021, 2022. I never talked to nobody,” he admitted. “Playing baseball was the worst. I hated being around these guys. These guys are trying to get me out of here, anyway.”
He painted on The Pivot the picture of a toxic Marlins clubhouse and culture those three years, one former manager Don Mattingly let happen. He referred to the club’s “bad captain,” without ever mentioning Miguel Rojas by name: “Not a good captain, not a good person, bringing down the young guys who were supposed be good.”
Tigers3232
Again are you going to provide a link….
User 401527550
Are you serious? You’re trying to put me in the defensive for you saying vile things about white people. Do your own research and stop being a bigot.
mp2891
Why do people ask for links without googling their request first? A simple search turns up everything you guys want – bleacherreport.com/articles/10113758-jazz-chisholm…
Tigers3232
@mp2891 People ask for links because people attack the character of others and they rarely substantiate it. I for one am not going to take the time to Google another’s claim, they made the claim they carry the burden of proof.
Tigers3232
As for the link you provided, it has nothing backing the notion that Jazz was the cause of any clubhouse issues.
That link claims Rojas the then team Captain was running to the Manager and ratting people out. If that’s true, that is obviously an issue. Being a Captain or a Team Leader one most have the trust of their team. Without that a leader is useless.
Now could Jazz be a primadonna? He very well could be. I can’t say definitively one way or the other. But most negative comments about young players like Jazz or Acuna who play with flare and wear emotions on their sleeves come from older predominantly white fans. So I made an assumption in my initial comment as I feel the guy I was replying to had. I very well could ve been wrong. But that’s what happens when one make assumptions. I just felt he needed to see the shoe on the other foot.
Tigers3232
@Mets What did I say that was “vile”? You made a claim about a player, I simply asked for a link substantiating your claim, if what you said is true should not be much of an issue. And one when makes a claim as the original poster and yourself had, you carry the burden of proof.
bwood
Since you are attacking older predominantly white fans, where is your burden of proof that “most negative comments about young players like Jazz or Acuna who play with flare and wear emotions on their sleeves come from older predominantly white fans”?
Please post your links for the players you listed above and your other links where older predominantly white fans are saying negative things about young players.
User 401527550
You are the one that brought race and made baseless horrific racial claims. Don’t go around making such accusations and then saying the burden of proof is with who you are accusing. That is horrendous.
Tigers3232
@Mets68 The original comment that I replied which you have supported further up the tread claims Jazz is a clubhouse cancer. That is what all these replies including yours stem from.
Pretty simple here provide a link substantiating your claim, or I guess we ll just have to chalk it up as B.S. on your part.
As for my reply to the initial remark by Larry, I have admitted it was an assumption and can not be backed by fact.
FYI I’m white as well and anything but racist. I judge individuals by their character. Now I will say all the I made an assumption about Larry, it was by no means blindly. Players like Acuna and Jazz are regularly criticized by older fans especially older white males. That is a reality.
mp2891
Tigers – Reasonable folks can disagree, but I don’t think you should be calling people racist before doing a simple google search to see if there’s anything behind what Larry was saying. Jazz and Acuna may or may not be clubhouse cancers, but they have rubbed veteran players wrong by ignoring team rules., so I think there is some truth to what Larry was saying.
Tigers3232
Again the burden of proof on such a thing falls on the one making the claim. I’m not doing others leg work.
Which veteran players has he rubbed wrong??? You still have yet to provide any link. Sorry man it’s seem pretty clear you are speculating.
mp2891
Maybe Larry should post a source if your discussion had been a back and forth, but he posted a single sentence and you went off on him. You didn’t give him a chance to post a source before you called him racist. You’re in the wrong here.
And the article I posted clearly discussed Jazz rubbing Rojas wrong. The Jazz quote from the article – “”Our team captain tried to get me out of here. My team captain would come and tell me, ‘Bro you’re the best on the team, bro. Keep on going, bro. You’re gonna be great. You’re gonna lead us one day.’ But then the next two seconds, he’s in (manager Don Mattingly’s) office telling the manager something, and then the manager coming and telling me, ‘Bro, this is what your team captain said.'”
I’m taking sides in the “is Jazz a bad teammate” discussion, but the article is clear that Jazz has had problems with veteran players. Whether you think Jazz is being unfairly treated by the veteran players isn’t the issue. You asked for a source, and I provided one after a 30 second search. Before calling someone a racist, you should spend at least 30 seconds doing the same.
mp2891
Correction – I’m NOT taking sides in the “is Jazz a bad teammate”…
Tigers3232
@mp The one making the initial claim carries the burden of proof.
You are saying “players” plural. There was one player mentioned the Captain who Jazz claimed was the running to the Manager. He appeared to apply Rojas was a snitch or a suck a@@. Again nothing in their implying he was a clubhouse cancer.
mp2891
Tigers – I’m not saying anything about the underlying discussion. I’m saying a simple google search tells me that there are reports of clubhouse problems involving Jazz out there, which means it’s reasonable for someone (ie: Larry) to believe Jazz is a bad clubhouse personality. It certainly means you should not be calling anyone a racist for saying they believe Jazz is a bad clubhouse fit. And just stop with the “burden of proof” argument. Do you really expect people to post cites and sources to every statement they make in an online chat room, including those that haven’t even received a response from anyone yet? Come on… That’s not how online chats work, nor should that be the expectation. In any event, I’m done here.
Tigers3232
@mp It’s Jazz talking about another individual in the clubhouse not someone making a claim about Jazz.
Do you understand the difference???
And no, I’m not doing Google searches when someone makes baseless claims. I ll call their bluff when I smell B.S.
TroyVan
Al Avila got fleeced by the Rays. At the time, people on here said if the Rays want your player, promote that player. And that’s what the Tigers should have done. Gave him away for nothing.
Although, I totally believe the Rays knew about Austin Meadows’ anxiety issue. If Al Avila knew, that wouldn’t surprise me at all.
Diabetic Rockstar
I’ve ALWAYS wondered when it comes to Austin Meadows if Tampa was aware of his anxiety/mental health struggles. While anxiety can develop quickly *sometimes*, usually triggered by stress or depression, the abrupt cases are generally more akin to “panic attacks”.Complex, dehibilitating cases of anxiety disorders develop & evolve over time. I simply, from my experience with mental health struggles, can’t see any way that in an age where Pro teams have unobstructed access to medical records that Tampa Bay was not aware of his condition.
Which leads me to all sorts of questions. Like, are psychiatry records shared with teams like medical records are? Do teams have designated psychiatrists? Disclosing injuries/medical status to teams in trade discussions is addressed in player contracts/MLBPA CBA, butbdoes it apply to mental health? Or does HIPAA supercede it in those cases?
Again…to me, there’s no way the Tampa organization was completely in the dark. Now, I don’t think they were trying to pull a fast one…but if a team traded a player who fails a physical, or it comes out he had an existing injury and the team didn’t disclose it, the trade could be nullified by the league. Why does this not apply to mental health? And is/SHOULD mental health screening be part of player physicals when it comes to free agency and trades?
Like I said…. so many questions
Also, no, I don’t think Al had any idea. I think Tampa didn’t say anything cause they didn’t “have” to, by CBA/MLB rules. As mental health awareness grows I see that being addressed in next CBA
TroyVan
The more I think about it, the more I believe that Avila was aware of it. Austin Meadows was a young, club controlled slugger who had already hit 30 HR in a season. In his last season with the Rays, he hit .234 with 27 HRs. You gotta assume that a team would covet a young player who had demonstrable success with all of his arbitration years yet to come.
Then why would the Rays give that up for a mid level prospect in Isaac Paredes? Nothing in Paredes’ stats really jump out. He was enjoying marginal success in the minors. This suggests that Avila was indeed aware of Meadows’ issues and rolled the dice.
stymeedone
Paredes was not a mid level prospect. He was very young for every level he was at. He had great contact numbers, didn’t strike out, and the scouts knew he had more power than he was showing. On most teams, he would have been untouchable, but the Tigers had Candelario receive the player of the year award consecutive years and looked like a keeper. Meadows problems, whether known or not, had not affected his game on the field, and the Tigers needed a LH power hitter at the time. It was heralded as a win-win at the time of the trade for both teams.
TroyVan
That’s what I think of as a mid level prospect, but that’s probably wrong. To me, a mid level prospect is like a AAAA player. Someone you can tell has skills, but not over abundant in any facet of the game. Probably will make the bigs, but whether or not they produce is anyone’s guess. Paredes has obviously produced.
And I’ll tell you, I liked him. I thought he looked good. I was surprised that they traded him, but when I looked at Austin’s numbers, that quickly went away.
mp2891
DR = The Rays knew about Meadows anxiety and his treatment for it. It wasn’t a secret. I’m sure the Tigers knew too.
mp2891
Rays definitely knew about the anxiety issue and the treatment he was receiving for it. I don’t think it was hidden from the Tigers, it just got crazy bad after the trade.
freeland1787
I’m not even entirely sure the Diamondbacks are looking for infield help. Suarez has heated up in July after a dreadful first three months of the season.
solaris602
Must have been sparked by the white hot flames of DFA on his backside. Hard to say what they could expect in return at the deadline, but he has saved his roster spot this month.
drasco036
If he’s available, Cubs should be all in.
rememberthecoop
Why? Cubs should be sellers if anything.
drasco036
Because:
A.) they shouldn’t be sellers
B.) he’s controllable for three more seasons
C.) he’s 25 years old and would be a legitimate middle of the order bat to pair with Michael Busch
D.) if you are a Cubs fan who thinks they should be “sellers” while only being 3 games out of the wild card with Brown, Alzolay, Wicks, Merryweather all due back soon then you really shouldn’t be a Cubs fan.

Some team is going to regret overpaying for Parades. I’m not a fan of low batting average with good power players. Just look at Dan Uggla, Brian Dozier, Joey Gallo, Willy Adames as recent examples of this type of player. They fizzle out very quickly. The ability to make contact is very valuable and underated in todays game
JrodFunk5
Agree. Add Javy Baez and Chris Davis to your list. When they fall, they fall hard.
JoeBrady
Uggla had 8 good seasons before getting old. Dozier 7 good years. Adames continues to be a good player.
mp2891
You’re kidding right? Adames has fizzled out? Don’t think you’ll find many to agree with you there. Dozier hasn’t played in like 5 years and Uggla 10 years. Maybe find more current examples., and make sure those examples are in their primes, not guys nearing retirement. Paredes has been perfoming around a 4 fWAR level for 3 years now. Maybe he will fizzle out one day, but he’s having his best year ever this year and he’s only 25 years old, so I doubt the fizzling will be anytime soon.

Both will be traded. Rays baseball.

Perhaps the worst Tigers trade ever. At least Doyle Alexander got them to the playoffs in 87 when they sacrificed a young John Smoltz to get him. This trade just totally went south on the Tigers.

Rays are now back to .500
They will listen to offers on Paredes & Randy.
Elfin & Littel will be dealt at some point.
Springs & Ras are coming back this season.
The Rays can use the trade deadline to revamp their MLB roster.
For the Rays they have the leverage this trade deadline. They can also move guys out in the offseason.
The Rays also also has about 5 (maybe more) potential starters in the minors.
