Report: “Growing Belief” That Marlins Will Trade Jazz Chisholm Jr.

By Steve Adams | July 8, 2024 at 11:58pm CDT

The Marlins announced their status as deadline sellers more than two months ago with their surprising early trade of Luis Arraez, and with the trade deadline now just 22 days away, their activity on that front should pick back up. While much of the focus has been on closer Tanner Scott, who’s a free agent at season’s end, Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald reports that there’s a “growing belief” Jazz Chisholm Jr. will also be traded. Mish lists the Mariners as  a “club to watch” if Chisholm is moved and also suggests the Pirates and Royals could join the bidding.

Chisholm, 26, is enjoying a solid season at the plate, hitting .255/.326/.407 (105 wRC+) with ten homers and 17 steals (albeit in 25 tries). He’s struggled with strikeouts on the past, and while his 24.9% rate is still worse than average, it’s a notable improvement over the 29.2% clip he registered in the four prior seasons. He’s paired those improved contact skills with a career-best 8.8% walk rate.

There’s little doubting Chisholm’s raw tools and star-caliber upside. He’s averaged 26 homers and 32 steals per 162 games played in his career. However, he’s never topped 124 games in a season and has only reached 400 plate appearances once to this point in his major league career. Injuries have frequently hobbled Chisholm and caused him to miss significant time. Since establishing himself as a regular in 2021, Chisholm has missed time due to a shoulder injury, a back strain (which required a 60-day IL stint), turf toe and an oblique strain.

Chisholm is earning an affordable $2.625MM this season and is controlled for two more years following the current campaign. He’s been the Marlins’ primary center fielder over the past two seasons, though that move was borne out of necessity. Miami has been unable to develop a center fielder and has come up empty in its long-running attempts to acquire a controllable option at the position. Chisholm, a natural shortstop who slid over to second base early in his career, moved to center field last year and has drawn mixed reviews from most public defensive metrics. He was a plus defender in just over 1300 innings at second base before the move to the outfield.

All three of the potential teams listed in Mish’s report stand as clear fits in a theoretical Chisholm deal. Royals general manager J.J. Picollo has been open about his desire to add a bat capable of playing both the infield and the outfield — a need Chisholm would fill nicely. The Royals have fairly even platoon splits as a team, but the bulk of the team is right-handed — including Kansas City’s two best hitters, Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez. First baseman Vinnie Pasquantino and second baseman Michael Massey (who’s been limited to just 142 plate appearances due to injury) are the only left-handed bats on the roster who have turned in average or better production, by measure of wRC+.

The Pirates, meanwhile, have received sub-par offensive production from second base this season. Since being called up, former first-round pick Nick Gonzales has delivered roughly league-average offense (.269/.307/.414, 99 wRC+), but he’s been more productive against lefties than righties. Pittsburgh outfielders are also hitting just .227/.299/.352 as a collective unit this season. Chisholm could provide an offensive boost in either role or potentially split his time between the two positions based on matchups.

Both the outfield and second base have been weaknesses for the AL West-leading Mariners as well. The hope in Seattle was that the offseason acquisition of Jorge Polanco would have solidified second base, but the switch-hitter’s steady offensive output unexpectedly cratered this season; in 214 plate appearances, the former Twins infielder has slashed just .189/.280/.284 with a career-worst 33.6% strikeout rate. Their outfielders have combined for a .230/.285/.365 batting line.

With two and a half seasons of club control remaining, an affordable salary and another productive season highlighted by his typical blend of speed and power, Chisholm should come with a relatively steep cost of acquisition. Mish notes that a deal in the offseason is possible as well, if the Marlins don’t get an offer to their liking in the next three weeks, and suggests that even some current non-contenders could look into a deal for Chisholm (both now and in the offseason) as they look toward the 2025 campaign and beyond.

It’s so tempting to want his talent but I think the kid needs some work between the ears. I’m not insulting him, he’s a young guy and exuberant, nothing wrong with that. I just think he takes the ego a BIT too far at times. Not much, just a bit, and that’s all it takes.

      Bang on Sodo, Bang on.

Steve wrote an extremely complimentary article, describing all of the natural talent jazz has, plays and things he does and can do. Watch Marlins games and he will often times dazzle with tremendous defensive plays, then often enough make a boneheaded baserunning/defensive miscue.

Near top of the league talent wise, but thing some connections crossed up above and also think myself he’s one of the Marlin players have mentioned this year more interested in chasing personal stats than any team oriented approach which could bare watching as to what his actual trade value is.

Move him to a team with higher expectations, a winning culture, clubhouse leadership, teammates that hold him accountable, and a manager that isn’t a lame duck, and watch how quickly he tones it down.

Do teams even consider him a Second Baseman anymore though? Even after trading Arraez they kept him in CF and he has played a single play at 2B since 2022

Betts switched to SS and 2B after not playing 2B for years, besides a handful of games and he he hadn’t played SS in like 10 years. Just not playing it for a bit doesn’t mean that he can’t anymore. I’d say that Jazz is capable of playing 2B, SS, and the 3 OF positions.

Chisholm would fit right in on plenty of teams. As a Cardinals fan I do question the fit personality wise but I am not putting the blame on Chisholm the Cardinals are ultra conservative and I don’t think it’s for the benefit of the team.

People from different walks of life act differently than others. Let’s be careful when we judge others because they don’t act like we expect them to act. If he’s doing criminal things that’s different but attitude is a subjective term.

His strikeouts would also make him right at home in Pittsburgh and his .250-something average would place him as one of their top hitters
Biggest selling point for our “frugal” owner is his salary.

I thought Pittsburgh as well. My initial prediction was for them to trade for Josh Bell. Now I don’t really want it to happen because he’s hardly better than Rowdy. I think he’s a risky player though. Another Cruz type with potential that gm’s bank on and lots of times get in trouble with because they overpay for them.

I would argue that Bell is NOT better than Rowdy at this point.

With Jazz being so affordable he would probably cost the Bucs more prospects than BC is willing to part with, and then Jazz would more than likely miss as many games as he plays.

Depends on what pieces of course, but I’m inclined to agree. They have depth at middle infield and pitcher. They’re threadbare everywhere else. But a couple of those pitching pieces are looked upon as being the guys who join the staff here and make it one of the best
Now, if they could only hit
And Bell is certainly not the answer

At this point meaning that he has had a better June than Bell! Before June 1st Tellez couldn’t hit a basketball and I certainly don’t want him to be our everyday 1B. They are both bench players but I agree that Bell isn’t the answer. Jazz should be our focus right now. He’s cheaper than Robert ( rumors to the Pirates?) and personally I like him better. Go get Jazz

Problem is, he presents more of a problem line-up wise than help. Ok, he plays 1st against right handers. Then what? He can’t play OF. So do you cut into Cutch’s ABs as a DH? Because Cutch can’t play a lot of Of anymore, either
I get that the Marlins are willing to eat a great deal of his salary. That alone will appeal to our “frugal” owner. But he hasn’t shown a great deal in his time in Miami and the big question is, what would they want in return? This past winter, it was said they covered Nick Gonzales. The kid is one of the few Pirates who’s hitting the ball

I don’t want us to trade for Bell, that was just my prediction based on the moves they make that barely move the needle. He could be had for very little but again probably not better than Tellez and doesn’t fit well into the lineup.
I feel like the Marlins could have interest in Henry Davis. They haven’t had a good catcher since they traded JTR.

I hope im wrong, but I think Rowdy just had a good month, nothing more.

Bell is a career 8.1 WAR and Rowdy is 1.0

Bell’s career shows a far superior hitter who usually gets hot in the 2nd half

When posters make claims like how bad the Mariners are at striking out, I usually assume they are exaggerating the situation. Posters just like to say fantastic thing.

Not you, sir. With 950 Mariner bats struck out, they lead MLB. There’s even a somewhat significant lead against the second worst team at striking out; the Oakland A’s.

Yep. The problem that makes this look worse is that, at the time, the D-Backs would’ve done the deal for Jordan Yammamoto. Unfortunately, he was valued more at the time by the Marlins. Pablo Lopez was too. Lopez or Gallen would have been a loss trade for Jazz. But had the Marlins budged on Yammamoto, dear goodness that would’ve been great!

Zac Gallen, one of the best starters in MLB. That Zac Gallen? You want to trade him for Chisholm? Someone who has only once hit significantly better than league average on a very injury shortened season? That is a really bad trade for Arizona.

If Atlanta gets Zac Gallen, I would take that trade 10/10 times. Ozuna is a 33 year old DH on an expiring contract. Loosing Ozuna would pretty much gut the Braves line up but getting Gallen would be a win for 2025 and probably wouldn’t ruin a 2024 playoff spot.

I think everyone should stop and ask themselves how much an ace with another season of control is worth and why Arizona would want to trade him. Is it because at the moment they are only a .500 team? I don’t think last seasons NL pennant winners are ready to pack it in just yet. To pry Zac Gallen from Arizona it’s really going to hurt someones feelings.

Hell, I would LOVE to read some thoughts from some Arizona fans on these takes we’re writing.

Our outfield is loaded and we have the starter at 2nd in the all star game. Gallen is one of the reasons we have another shot this season.
AZ just had a pretty good road trip ,
I’m sure we’ll add if we’re in a nice spot but I don’t see Jazz helping much.

I’m not a fan of either team, but if we’re looking at this season only, I say no

If you mean something like Ozuna for Gallen in some sort of way, the trade would never happen. But if the Braves went this way and the DBacks were crazy enough to do this, the Braves win the trade. Ozuna is a free agent after this season, is a DH because he has cement blocks for hands and is closer to 34 than he is 33. Gallen is younger and has an additional season of control. The Braves would suffer a little this season to be better next season and better for it in 26 as well.

If the Braves are all in for a big run this year, the trade makes no sense
If it’s a longer term picture, I agree with you wholeheartedly
I’m an outsider but if the Braves make this kind of deal, they’re waving the white flag for this season

SEA would do that. They wouldn’t move Julio from CF. SEA currently has the fecundity of prospects to make a trade if they are willing to gamble on his health. IMO they’re a perfect trade partner for MIA who can stock up on talent from a pool of 3 Top 100 SS/INF and a couple Top 100 OFers.

Personally- I would rather SEA used their Top 100 prospects to get a hitter who has spent far fewer days on the IL.

For a jazz trade (which we shouldn’t do) it would take probably a top 100 prospect and a lottery ticket, not a ton but nothing to sneeze at for a 700 ops outfielder

Lazaro Montes + Logan Evans would do it even though I wouldn’t want to do that since Montes will rise in rankings (I bet top 25 next year)

Montes is the one player they need to hold onto. If he continues to hit as he has this year, it won’t be long before he’s a top 10 prospect in MLB. Trading a package built around Harry Ford is the best route. He’s blocked and will have great value.

Both Montes (29) and Evans (80) are top 100 prospects right now according to Baseball America. That price is way too high for Jazz.

I love Jazz and I hope the Mariners get him and put him at 2b. Seeing him and Julio having fun on the same field would be incredible. But Jazz has not performed. His savant page is UGLY on both sides of the ball.. and he’s cheap this year but he only has 2 arb years of control left. The prospect cost is not going to be massive.

I bet he gets traded for much less than everyone thinks.

          Sad and… Mariners Fan-

This is my not so humble opinion- I would be shocked if the M’s trade Lazer Montes when:

          1) he is developing into such a good hitter

          2) he is exactly the type of hitter the M’s lineup will need for 2025 >

          3) No disrespect to MiA fans but I honestly don’t think multiple contenders will be beating the door down to get Jazz Chisolm. I dont see that type of bidding war (to acquire 2.5 yrs) for a player who cannot stay healthy.

          4) If they trade Lazer AND Logan Evans to MIA for Jazz Chisolm I assure you Tanner Scott will be included. Both Montes and Evans for Chisolm? Imo that’s a foolish over pay. A package of Montes and Evans should get you a lot more than you think…. FO’s put such an emphasis on the value of that 6+ yrs of team control.

Ford is the asset they should be most comfortable trading. Raleigh isn’t going anywhere and Ford’s bat doesn’t really play as well at any other position if he moves down the defensive spectrum.

Main issues are injury history and, frankly, underperformance compared to the endless hype. You’re talking about a guy who has produced 0.9 bWAR so far this year, which doesn’t blow anybody away. Wouldn’t give too much for him, but lots of clubs are looking for offense this year.

My guess would be Guardians to sure up their CF issues. Dodgers could also be in the mix for his services.

I honestly see the dodgers being very active and blowing the farm this year to fix any holes- plus adds another lefty bat to a pretty rh heavy lineup.

Maybe Andy Pages for Chisholm straight up.

But definitely see them being active in the pitching market. Better to have too many guys then wind up with not enough.

Chisholm isn’t suring up anyone’s CF issues. His DRS is -6 after putting up -9 last season, his UZR/150 is -7.4 after -6.6 last season, his RngR is -3.3 after -1.9 last season, his OAA is 0, his arm value is 0. He needs to move back to 2B where he’s a solid defender (2 DRS, 3 OAA with some slightly below average metrics, but a decent passing of the eye test when he last played there) instead.

Cleveland is already using middle infielders to man CF:

Tyler Freeman, Gabriel Aria, and recently gave Angel Martinez time in CF. Plus Will Brennan will be coming off the IL and can play there.

The point is not that Jazz might not be better. The point is that Cleveland prefers to bring their players along from their farm system. Have a look at their roster. If they go outside it’s because they’re trying to dump a veteran salary and will take youngsters they can work with in trade.

Jazz is hardly an established player. The Marlins would want some good prospects with high upside in return for Jazz. If Cleveland thought they could work him in at CF, then sending back a guy like Aria – that can play 17 positions adequately, but can’t hit more than once a week – might be something they’d consider….but again, that’s not why the Marlins are shopping Jazz.

@samuel- Well, of course, bcause they’re a low-budget franchise. Those types of teams rarely make big trades because they can’t afford to take the hit to their farm. That doesn’t mean they don’t want him, it just means they might not pay up for him.

How could the Marlins be a mess?

The baseball mainstream media was united this past offseason in pronouncing the female GM that resigned after they finally had a decent season in 2023 as some sort of genius for putting together that Marlins team. What? Suddenly the team got bad again?

Peter Bendix was with the Rays for 14 years. The ML team was successful. Worked his way up to GM, and was hired by the Marlins to be the President of Baseball Ops. The cupboard is obviously bare and Bendix is open to moving anything that might be of value to other MLB teams if he can pick up some prospects that he place
into the farm system he’s rebuilding.

Mariners fans would know that their Organization would never make a trade for another ‘2B like Jeff McNeil.’ Over the last 3 seasons they have made 3 consecutive trades for a ‘2B like Jeff McNeil.’ Those trades have not only failed miserably, statistically those players have had the single worst year of their careers (by a huge margin.) One of them – Kolten Wong had such a massive drop off in SEA he is no longer in the game at the highest level. They are anything but 2B Whisperers. Since Robbie Cano left in 2018 T-Mobile is currently where a good 2B “goes to die.”

Chisolm’s a terrible fit for the Braves. Would be of minimal use to plug an outfield hole for this season—and he’d have to play a corner spot (that he’s never played) when Harris II returns from the IL next week.. He wouldn’t play over Acuna, Harris II, or Kelenic next year. The Braves value up the middle defense too much to play him at SS and there’s no way he moves Albies off 2B. Nacho Alvarez probably gets the SS job next season (maybe sooner.) Good contact hitter on a rookie contract that will help the Braves w/luxury tax issues. Would be a terrible waste of assets to deal for a poor position fit like Chisolm. Can’t see AA even considering it.

You know, like jogging out ground balls and pop flies, catchers lobbing throws back to pitchers, allowing aggressive runners to move up, cell phones falling out of pockets during slides or a fielder with a handful of sunflower seeds while the ball is live in the outfield
Maybe I’m just a dinosaur, but I’m not sure how Chisholm matures in that setting.

Lots of promises that were torpedoed by signing other catchers, playing him in the OF, DH-ing him and making him a regular on the shuttle to Indy.

Too bad the glove sucks, he’d otherwise be a perfect sleeper for Baltimore as an upgrade for Ced Mullins (arb-eligible) and two-year placeholder for Bradfield. Would also formally free up Cowser (overrated bat) as a piece in an SP2/3 deal.

Alas, Elias rightfully prizes up the middle defense. Don’t think Mullins sees regular starts next year, if he’s even on the O’s roster.

Normally I’d say Jazz would be a hard pass in Pittsburgh. He just doesn’t play. He had one season where he’s played 100 games and in that season he was below average at the plate. He has had essentially no AAA time. Seems like those 7 games might be Rehab type situations?

That said. He still would be an improvement offensively over Jack and Taylor offensively. based on 2024 performance. Jazz has played this year. Jazz is “cheap” which also looks good on his bill.

Problem is what it would take to get him.

My opinion. I would probably call about him but likely pass. You could go to a Independent or Collegiate game, throw a rock in to the out field and if someone catches it, sign them. Offense probably would be about the same for their center field work. (/s)

If they’re pushing for 2024 then go for Scott even and if getting Jazz in a bundle doesn’t kill the farm take him too. Other wise find a rental and let jack try to work it out in AAA then make a decision in the off season. Davis Coming back and going back into the OF may throw another body at those trying to work it out if Endy comes back next year there will be a crowed Catcher position and Davis is probably the worst defensively.

If this is part of a soft push in 2025 then i’d probably stand back and wait to see what is available going into the last week. Pirates have enough iffy players going into 2025

That said I trust Bens assessment of talent more than previous Pirate GMs If they think Jazz can be healthy and play near league average. I wouldn’t freak out much.

Unless somehow they find a generous GM willing to take one of their many middle infielders on the farm or Chapman, I hope they do nothing until free agency

Let the remaining stud pitchers on the farm mature. Maybe Cruz, Hayes and Gonzales will grow up here. And maybe Nutting will have some sort of epiphany in the shower where calls his GM and tells him to go after a couple legitimate big bats

But they seem to be convinced being a .500 team or slightly below equates to being competitive. These days in the NL, I guess that’s possible

At this point Gleyber is a rental and the Yankees would have to kick in at least a pair of prospects for a deal (though if I’m the Marlins i would probably ask for Ben Rice in the deal)

I view JC as a watered down version of Luis Robert jr. Both guys are hurt regularly, they don’t get on base but Robert has a lot more power and is a terrific defender. Jazz to me is still kind of like a prospect because although he’s had some success at the major league level, it hasn’t been a lot and the there isn’t enough body of work to make a solid judgement. I certainly wouldn’t sell out my farm system for him they way I would with Robert.

His defense is so bad in CF that Chisolm is only on pace for a 1.5 WAR in 2024. That is below MLB average. Add his injury issues to his extreme struggles in the field and Chisolm is not going to net the Marlins as much of a return as many think. My bet? A couple of mid-range prospects, top 10-20 in the trading team’s system, that are in AA or above.

An all-star player has 3-6 WAR over a season, typically. If he has 1.4 right now, he’s on pace for a near all-star season. That is above the average major league player. By the end of a season, the average is certainly lower than 2.8.

Chisholm has 1.1 WAR after 57% of games have been played. That is a 1.95-2.0 WAR pace.

          baseball-reference.com/players/c/chishja01.shtml

All Star level is 4+ WAR for a season.

Average is 2.0-2.2 depending on the season.

Chisholm is average or below average per WAR. His hitting this season is 12% and his defense is among the worst in baseball in CF.

But he’s also playing out of position, which has to have an impact, and also on a club that isn’t trying to win, which shouldn’t have an impact, but it does. And by shouldn’t I mean ideally; I think many of us who’ve experienced professional arenas where everyone is just hanging on by a thread know this has a negative effect. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jazz hit the marks evaluators set for him if playing SS or second base and on a contender.

Would love to see Jazz on the same field as J-Rod. Talk about good vibes and joy of the game. His defense is probably passable at 2B. The bat can’t be worse than Polanco.

Prospect cost has to make sense though. Jazz is a very risky asset. The upside is sky high, but he hasn’t done it and he’s not even that young anymore. His savant page is all blue. I don’t think the prospect cost will be that high.

I don’t think he’s the answer to the M’s problems. They’d need to go get another big bat too, like a Vladdy or a LuBob to hit behind Julio in the 3 or 4 hole. I’d bet my bottom dollar the M’s don’t make any moves and continue to build their prospect hoard because it’s cheap and we’re winning 54% already.

Do I think they will limit their innings or shut 2 of them down? Not one doubt! Build for 2025. I haaaaate saying that (I want to win NOW, all of Pittsburgh does) but this isn’t their year. They need longterm help at 1B, CF/RF and (like almost all teams) RP.

Depends on the price. Chisholm seems to be one of those massively talented guys who underachieves. He was the SS of the future, then 2B and now CF. He hasn’t taken any position by the horns and he hasn’t cut his K’s. If he put it together he could be another Soriano and pull off a 40/40 season just like him. It seems like he can’t stay healthy or make any adjustments.

This doesn’t look good. I still say that the Arraez trade was just plain stupid, but clearly this is a puzzling teardown for a rebuild. I don’t think I’ve seen a rebuild that involved proven or improving players in their ages 28 and younger phases in their career. When you make the playoffs mainly with players in that range after a rebuild, you don’t rebuild again.

      Again, this is stupid.

So, we had our starting pitching and we had a few offensive pieces to continue building with (Arraez, Jazz, De La Cruz, Burger, Sanchez), but we decide to rebuild when it’s clear where changes need to be made to bring us consistently into contention gpoing forward?

Seriously, we’ve needed a LEGIT Closer…period. And we would have entered the offseason needing a starting Catcher and Shortstop. Then two more position players based on where you want to play Arraez and Burger – if they are you 1B/DH duo, then you needed a 2B and 3B piece. This was absolutely manageable because the Arraez, Jazz, Burger, De La Cruz and Sanchez comboe is a solid group that are cheap enough to allow for strong pieces at a couple of the other positions, and for a Closer.

      Again…ridiculous!

Bendix has only been with the Rays since he entered MLB. His brain is computerized. He also made some bad decisions with drafted players. It seems like he played favorites instead of trying to make the team better. Of course, this is all just what I think, but despite the Rays being trash this year, I’m glad bendix is gone.

It’s a fair assessment and feedback about what you saw when he was there.

For me, he has to hope that the pieces he got for Arraez amount to something. If not, that trade will be remembered as a big part of the Bendix Era here. Not good for him. He won’t live it down any more than Mike Hill can’t live down the Miggy and D-Train trade as well as the Yelich trade. When you trade star players, you have to make sure you don’t come out with a majorly failed return.

And as a Marlins fan, I’m seriously concerned that we have gone from Mike Hill to Kim Ng to Peter Bendix. If Bendix fails, that makes three consecutive poor GMs running the team. It’s crazy considering that we had Dave Dombrowski once upon a time until John Henry ruined things.

Ship Jazz, Berry and Sonoja to the Tigers for Tork, Madden and Bigbie. Lots of guys having down years there on both sides but who have potential. Jazz could play some corner OF with Greene, Meadows and Perez handling CF duties, but mainly 2B with Keith shifting to 1B where some say he will end up anyway. Sonoja looks like a good utility guy at least and Berry, like Tork, might benefit from a change of scenery. Madden and Bigbie hit speed bumps this year but have profiled as everyday players up until then.

I’d be okay with the Pirates adding him to play RF. He’s a below average CF, and is probably better suited for Second Base, but RF at PNC Park is pretty small.

Pirates don’t need a Second Baseman, they need an Outfielder. Nick Gonzales is fine at Second Base, he’s playing at a 3+ WAR pace since being called up. I’d rather the Pirates pursue someone else, but if he doesn’t cost a lot I’d be okay with Chisholm. They need bats. Play him in RF and platoon him with Olivares.

He has no ‘star-caliber’ upside. He can’t stay on the field *in his early and mid-20s.*

A MI worth at most 2 WAR whose price is going up thanks to arbitration won’t get you anything like a top prospect. The Mets might want to see if the Marlins are willing to take Brett Baty and one of their #mid-teens starter prospect, though that might be a little insulting given Baty’s MLB numbers to date.

As every M’s fan this season, I’m disappointed with the teams offense thus far, but one average bat is just that. An average bat. I would like to see them pick up a top end left handed reliever. Stanek has done well, but with Brash out and Santos still a bit of a question mark, they need another back end reliever. The optimist would say they have Munoz, Santos and Stanek on the back end, but they are all right handed. Throw in a top shelf left handed reliever and I’d feel a lot more comfortable. One bat is not going to fix the offense. The offense needs to fix themselves at this point.
