Tigers Agree To Deal With First-Round Pick Bryce Rainer

By Anthony Franco | July 22, 2024 at 6:06pm CDT

The Tigers are in agreement with first-round draftee Bryce Rainer on a $5.8MM bonus, reports Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com (X link). That’s narrowly above the approximate $5.71MM slot value for the 11th overall pick.

A 6’3″ high school shortstop from Southern California, Rainer had been committed to the University of Texas. He was the second prep player off the board — Pittsburgh selected Konnor Griffin at #9 — in a college-heavy first round. Rainer was arguably the top high school talent in the class. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel ranked the lefty-hitting infielder as the best high schooler and the #6 draft prospect overall. He ranked ninth or tenth on pre-draft rankings at FanGraphs, Baseball America and on Keith Law’s list at The Athletic.

Evaluators credit Rainer with the potential for plus power and the chance to stick on the left side of the infield. Scouting reports universally praise his excellent arm strength which would play at third base even if he outgrows shortstop. There’s some trepidation about his hit tool — Law notes that Rainer doesn’t have great bat speed and hasn’t handled plus velocity well — but there’s clearly significant upside if Rainer sticks at shortstop and can tap into 20+ homer power annually.

Detroit has five prospects in Baseball America’s most recent Top 100 update, including three players (Jackson Jobe, Max Clark and Kevin McGonigle) in the top 30. Rainer might not immediately jump into the upper half of that list, but he adds another high-upside talent to the farm system.

The future could be bright for the Tigers if Rainer, Clark and McGonigle all live up to their draft status and bonus payments. Add them to Jung, Keith and Greene and that’s a strong offensive core to look forward to

More cheese dripping from STYMEEDONE’S cracker. Will you ever make a comment that makes sense ever again? I’ll bet that you’ll be in a nursing home babbling nonsense by the time Clark and McGonigle are promoted. We fully realize you want Harris gone, but really? Sabotage the Tigers by giving away Greene? Damn dude, the dairy product is now dripping from your cracker to the keyboard and then on the floor. Take the time to clean up your Scott Harris Hate Cave, rather than sharing your idiotic theories with us. The floor in your mom’s basement must be getting gooey and she will be upset with you.

Greene will get a contract extension that buys out his arb years plus maybe a year or possibly 2 of his free agency years. He just needs to stay healthy but it’ll be a deal that benefits both team and player.

He can’t come up soon enough. Trade Baez with Skubal to the Dodgers and perhaps a single A pitcher or two.

Just cut Baez and be done with him. Don’t attach him to Skubal and get worse prospects to get rid of Baez’s contract.

Yes, I;m okay with that, but 80 million is a lot of dough, and Skubal will get a huge raise even if he doesn’t win the Cy Young. It’s just so much money, and the Tigers would be doing Skubal a favor and they can always bid on him in 2 years with fond memories of his stay here.

Tigers are not desperate to get out of Baez contract. Sure they’d like to. But not at expense of giving away Skubal. If they decide to move Skubal they ll be looking to maximize the return on talent for him.

Even if they free’d up the $ Baez is owed, free agent markets have been rather thin. It won’t definitively help them.

Well, Detroit has the hole at first, and at short. 80 million is not chump change, that’s 3 more Kieth style contracts for say a Malloy, and Perez, with one left over. Skubal is heading to 30 million in his last year here. Trade him and Baez, and move on.

We don’t even know if he’ll be traded, or what a high value player like this traded by Harris regime would even look like. Who knows ? I just like posting that that because they have a lot of ways to go about it if they do trade, and everyone will understand if they don’t trade.

I just want to see Carpenter try out at first base, or will they move Perez back to the infield ? Malloy is way better than I ever expected. What a steal getting him by Harris. So, whatever happens on the trade deadline it’s going to be exciting, waku waku.

80 million for Baez, and at least 30 million more for Skubal to full term. That’s a lot of jack, and I don’t see Baltimore selling the farm for Skubal.

The Dodgers have Ohtani for 10 cents and to them getting Skubal would basically win them the whole shot. No, I’d trade him and Baez, and spend it on Detroit’s farm system. Jobe for the long haul, and others.

Yes we don’t knownif he ll be traded. Harris has already spoke on the matter and is clearly reluctant to deal a talent such as Skubal. That kind of further solidifies they won’t give up a talent like Skubal just to tie him to salary relief.

As for $30M, Skubal will not get anywhere near that in his 2 arbitration yrs. The way arbitration us set up he can’t get that high with where he is currently at.

Now if the O’s are truly willing to pay the insane cost Skubal will command Tigers should jump and Harris will probably feel compelled to. Only because it’s such a truly good fit. O’s have on the cusp of MLB talent and don’t have enough positions to place them in the lineup. They also have a need at pitching and adding Skubal makes them a series WS threat.

Skubal should be over 10 million next year, and 20 million in 26 easy if he stays injury free. 110 million is no joke and the Tigers have a good system now. Saving some cash and clearing out Baez along with a low A pitcher or two from the Dodgers would be a pretty good haul.

Tigers3232 is right. It makes no sense to minimize the return for Skubal when the only way they will trade him is if the return is astronomical. Like Wiley says below just stick him on the bench as a defensive replacement for SS, 2B and 3B. Or cut him and eat the contract.

Perez was terrible defensively at 2B, that’s why he was moved to the OF.

8nstead of screwing up the Skubal return (if that happened) by attaching Baez, they should do a bad contract swap with someone and perhaps attach a prospect to make it more attractive. See if there is a pitcher out there with a bad contract who Fetter might fix or a change of scenery candidate on offense (Bryant? Bellinger? Morel? Storrey?).

Skubal is not likely to be attached to Baez in a trade

That would lower the Tigers return in a trade deal
and kind of defeat the whole purpose of moving Skubal to jump start the rebuild.

This would easily be the dumbest trade suggestion ever. You don’t trade Baez you cut him. However, there’s nobody really ready to take his place so you live with the solid defense and grab a beer when he’s at the plate.

I just read the dumbest trade suggestion ever on another post. Why wouldn’t someone trade bad contracts and hope for the best? I don’t see that as stupid, because a “maybe” is better than Baez in the lineup.

I agree he should be cut or atvm the very least a bench player.

Based on what? The Tigers don’t have a high payroll. They have great pitching. They have a young core. They have a highly rated farm system to replace players with. They have a great manager. They are a team on the rise. Where is the negative?

In the short term they do need to sign or trade for some young bats and get a SS this offseason.

Skubal will sign an extension this off season. He has every motivation to lock in life changing money now and still hit. FA in 3-4 years. Tigers have every reason to as well since the value they’ll get from him will be better than any trade return. White Sox did a similar trade with Chris Sale. Looked good at the time. Looks horrible now. Good teams don’t trade prospects they expect to excel

UPDATE ON SKUBAL TO ORIOLES POSSIBLE DEAL

DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN ORIOLES AND TIGERS ARE VERY SERIOUS

MLB.com is keeping track of the latest news and rumors surrounding Tarik Skubal. The 2024 MLB Trade Deadline is July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.

July 22: Tigers scouting Orioles’ top prospects (source)
The Orioles acquired an ace in Corbin Burnes in the leadup to the regular season. They might add another frontline pitcher prior to the July 30 Trade Deadline. Their interest in Skubal was reported by Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci last week. And the Tigers seem to be doing their due diligence in case Baltimore meets their high asking price for the All-Star hurler.

A source tells MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi that the Tigers have scouted the Orioles’ Triple-A team in recent days. That club contains Jackson Holliday, Coby Mayo and Connor Norby — three of the Orioles’ top five prospects. Holliday and Mayo are ranked No. 1 and No. 15, respectively, on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects.

Morosi doesn’t expand on the likelihood of a deal, but those would ostensibly be the types of players included in a trade for Skubal, who is under club control through 2026 and is enjoying a fantastic season. The 27-year-old has a 2.41 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 116 innings.

Each of those three aforementioned prospects are batting at least .280 with a .900 OPS at Triple-A Norfolk. The 20-year-old Holliday struggled in his first taste of the Majors earlier this year, going 2-for-34 with 18 strikeouts. But many still view him as a generational talent.

I would rather make a trade with the Orioles (then the Dodgers) who have the higher ranked prospects in the top 100.

While i still hope they dont trade him if they do, I agree re Baltimore. Those players could for the most part come in and play right now.

The Dodgers do have interesting pieces but a lot are older pitchers or further away from MLB and wouldn’t contribute next year. They seem more focused in Crochet and other pieces like Robert and Kopd h from the ChiSox.

Maybe some combo of Rushing (C/1B), Cartaya (C), Miller (P), Ferris (P), Joendry Vargas (SS), Y. Fernandez (C/2B), Miguel Vargas (IF/OF), Pages (OF), De Paula (OF). Personally I’d like to see a package of Rushing, Cartaya, Miller, Ferris, Yeiner Fernandez, Miguel Vargas and Joendry Vargas if they trade with the Dodgers. Add some smaller pieces on the Tigers end. Some pieces for now and some pieces for later and grabbing prospects in bulk means there’s less likelihood the prospects in the return being failures. They want him, make them pay through the teeth.

Apparently, you misunderstood my posts and appear to be drawing the wrong conclusions

I am a life long Tigers fan.
I was born and raised in Detroit.
I don’t live there now, but I still follow the Tigers and other Detroit sports teams.

I stated that I am a big fan of Mike Elias’s work and how he helped construct both the Astros and now the Orioles.
Maybe that is why you assumed that I was an Orioles fan?

I also stated that I am a big fan of Dave Dombrowski and his work in building winners /contenders every where that he has worked. including the Phillies.

I researched the many sides of a potential Skubal; deal including what Orioles fans and Media are saying about it.

It is real and under consideration by both teams.
The Orioles have made an offer for Skubal.
The Tigers countered with a their very high “ask” that is similar to a Soto from the Nats to the Padres deal.

The ball in in Mike Elias’s and Baltimore’s court now.
The Tigers have some of their best scouts shadowing the Orioles AAA and AA teams that have many of the players discussed on those two teams along with the major league Orioles team.

It is 1 week from the Trade Deadline.
          Things happen and develop quickly.
If Mike Elias and the Orioles decide to “go for it”
and try for the World Series Trophy and rings this year.
then the Tigers and Scott Harris will take his call up to the trade deadline. with the Tigers “high ask” for players and prospects
The Tigers are doing their “due diligence”
Major trades could happen in the last few days and right up to the last few hours of the Trade deadline.

If it happens, this would be a “pure win/win baseball trade where both teams/sides benefit greatly.

          Cheers!

SI’s Tom Verducci and MLB ‘s John Paul Morosi(he covers the Tigers) are 2 VERY CREDIBLE Sports Journalists who make their living getting sports stories correct and fact checking this stuff before they put it out there.
They wouldn’t have jobs for big name sports publications
if they were just making stuff up and did not source their facts and stories properly.

And Scott Harris and the Tigers would not send a number of their best scouts and tie up significant Tigers scouting assets to scout the Orioles AAA and AA teams if “there was nothing there” or if there was “just casual interest”.

So, any reasonable person would conclude that
a possible Orioles=Tigers trade for Skubal involving multiple prospects IS VERY REAL
and could happen if Baltimore meets Detroit’s asking price in return players and prospects.

Here’s also the thing…..no offer has been made. That’s your delusion. The Tigers sent their scouts out of due diligence.at this point. Teams do send their scouts to look at prospects all the time, not just in this case, and many times nothing materializes. Maybe they’re looking at a return for the Os to pick up Flaherty, did you ever think of that? I didn’t think so.

I’m not saying a trade isn’t possible, but you know no more than I do about the situation, and don’t pretend that you do.. You’re simply trolling…..hoping that your Os (distance yourself from being a fan, if you must, but we all know differently.) can pick up Skubal.

You calling yourself a reasonable person, is rich. Making up trades and suggesting what the Tigers should get in return out of whole cloth. That’s not reasonable.

Trying to be nice and diplomatic here.

But, you obviously do not know what you are talking about
especially when you completely “make up” a phony story about me being an Orioles fan?!

How does “born and raised a Detroit Tigers fan translate into “a secret Orioles fan”?!
I have never lived in Baltimore or even close to it.

Nothing in my posts would indicated that I am or was an Orioles fan.
Lots of Tigers fans are talking about a potential Tigers trade of Skubal to the Orioles

Talking about what kind of return the Orioles would agree to give the Tigers for Tarik Skubal does not make me an Orioles fan!
It is all over the Detroit Media and Detroit sports fan sites.
Lots of Tigers fans are talking about it and it is all over Detroit and National Sports Media.

If you were a true Tigers fan, then you would know that.

And, why are you trolling me about what baseball team that I root for?!
You have time on your hands and/or can’t find something better to do?!

Obviously, I do my homework and research much more than you do!

The Trade Deadline is one of the busiest times for Major League Baseball Front Offices.
Their resources and personnel are finite.
They cannot afford to park their valuable scouts following a farm teams like the Orioles that they are not making a trade with when probably half the teams in the league or more are having conversations about making trades with the Tigers. (Skubal, Flaherty, Kelly and many others).
          It defies common sense.

Your comments about the Orioles maybe wanting to trade for Flaherty are so off base and completely incorrect.
Didn’t you know that Flaherty pitched for the Orioles last year and pitched very poorly for them?!

Flaherty was 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA for the Orioles last year.
Anyone can see that they did not resign Flaherty this year and that they are not trading for Flaherty and hinging their pennant hopes on a guy who did not produce for them last year.
And, the clubhouse chemistry was not there either.
If you had done your homework and were not just throwing things out there off the top of your head, then you would know those facts.

So, yes I can say with complete confidence that I know a lot more about this situation that you do.
My analysis is directly on point.
You are not doing any analysis based on the facts and circumstances and expert opinions based on the known facts and the professional sports reporting available to the public.

          And, that is OK also
Everyone is entitled to their opinions.
Every sports fan forms their own opinions.

Mine are based on the facts.,

          Your opinions are just opinions
And, every baseball fan has his/her opinions.
That is part of the fun part of the game of baseball and its fans!

          Cheers!

“Apparently, you misunderstood my posts and appear to be drawing the wrong conclusions

I am a life long Tigers fan.
I was born and raised in Detroit.
I don’t live there now, but I still follow the Tigers and other Detroit sports teams.”

I misunderstood nothing, because none of that is true. Everything you say is overblown with no credible backing as of yet. Show me where Verducci and Morosi stated there are serious talks going on. Just because you believe it’s true, doesn’t give you the license to take the two journalists out of context. Oh by the way, Morosi doesn’t cover the Tigers anymore and hasn’t for years. The only place I see that there are, is from YOU! Troll on Os troll.

Cheers? Yeah troll, you cheer for the Os, I’m the tigerfan4ever.

Sportsfan0000, if Skubal is traded to your Os, then you’ll start crowing about how great you are and start taunting me in true troll fashion. All I have to say about you, is even a troll like you, is like that proverbial blind squirrel finding that nut on a rare occasion.

      Are you drunk
or did your bong pipe go out?!

Your posts completely lack common sense and
do not align with the facts.

Insisting I am an Orioles fan
just because I discuss the same issue thousands of Tigers fans are discussing?!
      Not an Orioles fan.

      Get a Life!

Thousands? I see only one Os troll, misinterpreting Morosi (even saying he covers the Tigers, when he hasn’t for about a decade now) and Verducci.

I state facts, including you, being an Os troll.

I have a life. You need one, instead you’re stirring up this crazy crap. Your posts completely lack common sense and do not align with the facts, don’t project your misinformation onto me. I’m not the one running around saying that just because the Tigers have scouts at you beloved Os minor league games that a trade is imminent. Get out of mommy’s basement, get some fresh air and get rational. You’re barreling toward STYMEEDONE territory, with your nonsense, like….

“UPDATE ON SKUBAL TO ORIOLES POSSIBLE DEAL

DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN ORIOLES AND TIGERS ARE VERY SERIOUS”

If that were true, MLBTR would be all over it. There was nothing in today’s chat about it, some chat hosts say they would be stunned if he was even traded and there would be an article written about it. But nope, nothing but a troll Os fan speculating Tigers scouting, pulling hard for his team to get the best pitcher in baseball.

I call you out and you get very defensive because you know I’m talking logically and you call me drunk and say something about a bong going out (I don’t own one nor do I smoke pot). Again you’re projecting.

    Hey Ant,
Detroit is the one who should be making the overwhelming offer – the offer that can’t be refused…….
    To Boston
    Package Skubal?
With Flaherty? With Foley? With Rogers? With Urshela? With more? With Chaffin? (I know, very difficult to persuade Boston. That’s the job Harris was hired to do.

They’d be blocking both NY and Baltimore.

A leak to the the press to stir up the BoSox fans…… wheres’ Spock? Come on Scotty, give it all she’s got! Beam Spock on board.

Anyways, it was a good to spread rumors about Skubal. It loosens things up. So and so, was untouchable? Really?

No one wants to lose any of those players, especially Skubal and Flaherty, however, I believe Detroit will and should take a more balance approach to payroll. Honestly, it would benefit the starting pitchers. I don’t want to see Detroit award any $35M/year contracts…… I’d love to see Skubal and Flaherty land near there soon…..
