Angels Designate Johnny Cueto For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | August 30, 2024 at 5:05pm CDT

The Angels announced they’ve designated Johnny Cueto for assignment. Los Angeles also placed reliever Carson Fulmer on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to August 27) with elbow inflammation. The moves create active roster spots for the previously reported promotions of Caden Dana and Samuel Aldegheri. The Halos transferred José Marte to the 60-day IL to clear the second 40-man spot.

Los Angeles called Cueto up last week. They gave him two starts, in which he surrendered nine runs over 11 1/3 innings. Cueto struck out six, walked three and gave up four home runs. He managed a quality start against the Royals in his team debut (three ER in 6 1/3 frames) before the Tigers tagged him for six runs on Tuesday.

The Angels then decided to take their first look at Dana and Aldegheri, two of the top pitching prospects in the organization. That’s a better use of the final month of a lost season than continuing to turn to a 38-year-old impending free agent. Cueto’s tenure with the Halos certainly wasn’t the most memorable, but it did mark his 17th straight year logging some amount of MLB action. Los Angeles will place Cueto on waivers in the next few days. He’ll almost certainly clear and become a free agent.

As for the injured players, Fulmer told the Halos beat that he’s headed for an MRI (X link via Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com). The 30-year-old righty expressed confidence there’s nothing structurally awry. Marte has been on the injured list for a few weeks with a viral infection. Manager Ron Washington told reporters earlier in the week that the righty experienced shoulder soreness once he resumed a throwing program (link via Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register). The severity of the injury isn’t clear, but his season is over.

When he 1st hit FA, pitching legend Pedro martinez was trying to get the RS FO to sign him. Was wanting them to sign him as well. What a major financial bullet teams dodged by “losing” the Cueto sweepstakes, like 8-10y back. 1 injury after another.

Dodger fans are lowkey pathetic. Literally every resource on earth, probably the largest disparity of any team in the four majors to the rest of the league and they cant win.

So they constantly act defensive lyand beef, but they know. Truthfully know, deep down, that the schtick is just because they know everyone knows what they are. A team that hasnt earned anything.

        “they cant win”
Literally the best record this year
Literary the most wins over the last decade

        “Literally every resource on earth,”
        Literally not true

        “Dodger fans are lowkey pathetic.”
Some of them, like the one you replied to, certainly are. Just like with every team.

What team are you a fan of, because you’re coming across pretty poorly here yourself.

@Marlins Fan: No. They couldn’t. Designating a player for assignment doesn’t relieve them of salary obligations unless the player is claimed on waivers. No organization is going to puck up that albatross contract. Angels will have to eat a sizeable portion of it in a trade if they want Trout gone.

Personal opinion I know, but I still think he was the best pitcher in 2014. Kershaw had a pitcher friendly park, and better team, but to win 20 and have a 2.25 ERA in GABP, that’s an accomplishment.

I hope Cueto saved some money and can live off the interest. His MLB days are done; not being able to stick with the Yankees is the signal that it’s time to retire.

He could make the Reds rotation right now. Which is interesting, since he signed his first pro contract, as a Dominican teenager, with them back in 2004.

I guess Cueto won’t be a mentor to the young pitchers after all. Or I hope they kept good notes while he was there.
Why is it Triple A for the veteran free agents but the rookies never get sent there so they never really play or interact w older players til the majors! So that can’t be good for chemistry where players are playing with and against 35 40 yr guys for the first time’s in their career.
The Angels have really sent a message since the extension. What are they 2-10?

Wouldn’t be surprised to see him make someone’s rotation out of spring training 2025 as a fifth starter. He has some deception in his delivery.
