Astros Select Zach Dezenzo

By Darragh McDonald | August 6, 2024 at 3:05pm CDT

3:05pm: The Astros have now officially announced that they have selected Dezenzo. In corresponding moves, they optioned outfielder Trey Cabbage to Triple-A Sugar Land and designated right-hander Dylan Coleman for assignment. Coleman was acquired from the Royals in an offseason trade but has just one big league appearance for Houston, having spent the rest of the year on optional assignment. In his 36 Triple-A innings, he has a 6.50 ERA with a 23.9% walk rate.

2:25pm: The Astros are going to call up infielder Zach Dezenzo, reports Chandler Rome of The Athletic on X. They will need to make corresponding moves to open space for him on the active and 40-man rosters.

Dezenzo, 24, gets the major league call for the first time. A 12th-round pick of the Astros in 2022, he has made a quick rise through the farm system. He split his time between High-A and Double-A last year, hitting 18 home runs in 94 games. His 25.9% strikeout rate was a bit high but he also drew walks at a solid 10.2% clip. His combined batting line was .304/.383/.531 for a 141 wRC+, though with an unsustainable .382 batting average on balls in play.

Coming into 2024, Baseball America ranked him #5 in the club’s system. They noted that his bat-to-ball skills are low but he makes good decisions and crushes the pitches that he does make contact with, leading to strong exit velocities.

He began this year on the shelf due to a wrist issue and began a rehab assignment at the Complex League in early June. It was around that time that FanGraphs ranked him #6 in the system, suggesting he could wind up like Eugenio Suárez as a guy who strikes out a lot but puts the ball over the fence enough to still be a useful contributor, though perhaps in streaky fashion.

Once he overcame his wrist issue, Dezenzo returned to Double-A and hit a tepid .222/.308/.370 in 22 games there but was nonetheless promoted to Triple-A and debuted at that level on July 24, less than two weeks ago. He has since been on a massive heater, hitting .391/.472/.739 in his 11 Triple-A games. He won’t maintain a .438 BABIP but it’s encouraging that he has four home runs and an 11.3% walk rate in that time.

It’s an aggressive move for the Astros to promote him despite his lack of a track record, but it reflects how much they have struggled to get production out of their first base slot. José Abreu had an awful time this year, struggling so much that he agreed to be optioned for a time. Around that stint on the farm, he hit .124/.167/.195 in the majors and was released in the middle of June.

Jon Singleton has picked up the bulk of playing time at first base in Abreu’s absence but has hit .230/.311/.354 this year for a 91 wRC+. That’s not disastrous production, only 9% below league average overall, but clubs generally expect first base to be a position where they can count on strong offensive output. He’s also been slumping of late, with a line of .167/.196/.315 dating back to July 13.

Dezenzo has been splitting his time between third base and first base this year but it seems unlikely he’ll see significant time at the hot corner with the presence of Alex Bregman and the struggles at the other end of the diamond. It’s a bold move, with Dezenzo having just 85 Double-A games and 11 Triple-A contests on his ledger but the Astros are in a tight race and didn’t get any first base help prior to the deadline.

Houston started out dreadfully this year but managed to climb back into the race. They are currently five games back of a Wild Card spot but just a game and a half behind the Mariners in the West division. Perhaps Dezenzo can give them a bit of a boost if he can quickly acclimate to big league pitching. It’s also possible that this is a bit of an audition for next year, with Bregman slated for free agency. Prospect reports generally cast some doubt on Dezenzo’s ability to stick at third, which will likely be a long-term question, but the first test will be handling himself at the plate.

Cool. Hopefully he can hit more than Dubon/SIngleton/Kessinger/Diaz

Going to assume the Diaz you’re referring to is Aledmys and his 4 Houston PA this season and not Yainer who is hitting .295 with 10 HR and 20 2B (115 OPS+, 112 wRC+) in just over 400 PA.

I remembered Yanier playing some 1B last season but didn’t know they phased that out in 2024. I also didn’t realize Dubon had played so much 1B this season. I also kinda thought you were just listing guys you hoped he would hit better than haha

How was it not Aledmys Diaz that got sent down or cut? The front office right now had no clue what they are doing. Cabbage could actually be useful not a cheerleader like Diaz. Guess the Astros don’t care about this season

Cabbage has been almost as dismal at the plate as Dubon and Abreu.

I kind of expect Aledmys to be let go. Then again they may just be keeping him there because they know he’s been there and done that and he can come off the bench with these young guys need ABs.

Yes!!!!!! Dana Brown mentioned him and Shea Whitcomb the other day. Diaz is wasting a spot so he’s probably getting released

I wonder if Shea Whitcomb and Ryan Gusto might be following him. The Astros need some kind of bolt of energy the whole team seems lifeless. I’d also like to see Whitley come up and be part of the bullpen. Time to see if he has it or not

I know, I’m surprised in a way too. It seems like they’re not real high on Whitcomb for some reason. Lots of guys are good at AAA and just can’t cut it in the bag. We’ve seen quite a few of them come through.

Astros need a major upgrade in the OF. Not withstanding Yordan, our OF is the worst in MLB.

Chas has not been great at all this season. Meyers August has been good for him but we shall see as time goes. Leon has not impressed. Cabbage either. I do believe Tucker is done for the season. Whether is still around next season. BRegman even. I do not think Houston can afford extensions on both. But I think outfield will be a need next season and pitching both starter and bullpen. Also maybe the corners needing someone. Depending on Descenzo the rest of this season. If read right things do not look great for him at third. Descenzo that is. Dubon has done well in outfield but hitting not so. But do not see him as future there. Yordan spot starts and hope he gets going. Not much in power department lately.mhope not on decline.

It’s going to be a long 2 months for us Astro fans. It almost seems missing the playoffs is needed to turn this franchise around. Joe Espada needs to go along with Alex Cintron, Jeff Bagwell and Reggie Jackson and probably a few more guys. Crane needs to stop acting like Jerry Jones and let his front office make the moves

I went to Yellowknife last year. Learned Canada (at least that part) is totally cool with you blazing on the streets. Walking around in -50 degrees smoking a few joints was definitely a lot more enjoyable than it sounds. I’ve been trying to convince the wife to move there ever since

Wrong Dylan Coleman tagged in the article.

Only 6 Homers on the season but 4 in 11 games at AAA. Maybe Dezenzo can give them some sort of offense at the position. Also this will give the Astros an idea of whether the kid is MLB ready and whether or not to pursue a new deal with Bregman or another Third Baseman over the winter

They should let Bregman walk. He will be looking for a long contract and he is simply not good enough or young enough to justify that. They should use the $30M he is getting this year to secure Tucker – provided they haven’t amputated that leg.

It is just Descenzo coming up. A. Diaz I suspect might be cut. I know just a short bit for him but even to this point Leon is not looking great. I hope Descenzo can help. Shay was looking good too. Forest also for bullpen I am sure. Do not know if Diaz could be dropped or even Cabbage. He is not cutting it either. Has in outfield as well. Neither helped in key spots with bases loaded 3 innings in a row. Astros should have busted it open in regulation. But Singleton did nothing as well. Dubon has been fair but not lately and certainly not hitting like last season. I think he stays with team but May go back to Utility. Kessinger is in AAA now as was not being used. See if in lineup tonight or not.

Best of luck to him. Prospect ratings make him look like Joey Gallo with less power and worse defense.

If you’re talking about 2017-21 Joey Gallo, the Astros would take that in a heartbeat over what they’ve had at first this year.

Would they take him as a guy that probably tops out at 28 hrs though? He hasn’t hit more than 18 in any single year.

Best comparison I have is take 2018 Gallo and shave off 12 Hrs and a few other counting stats for what a full year might look like.

This is what happens when you fire your GM right after he wins you a World Series and the owner takes over the reigns and starts signing free agents. Abreu 3/75 hader 5/95 montero I think was 3/54. That’s a lot of dead money. I thought Bryan Abreu could have been the closer, that Hader money could have been spent wiser

Ha ha, yes I agreed with the rest of your post. I am an old man and grew in the times when spelling and grammar were very important in an education. In fact, in Australia back then, if you failed English you failed to advance to the next grade and had to repeat the year..
          Anyway, no offence intended,.

Yikes, feels like they’re throwing spaghetti at the wall here. Maybe it works out and they catch some lightning in a bottle.

Hindsight and all but really thought Stros should’ve sold hard at the deadline. Really wonder what Bergman could’ve brought back in this year’s market.

I think this is a good move for HOU. Zach Dezenzo can hit. They just need to stick it out with him and don’t worry too much about his defense. He’s 6’5”, not traditionally a compatible size for a 3B but more suited for 1B. I believe that both his offense and defense should improve with experience.
