Giants Acquire Ryan Watson From Orioles

By Darragh McDonald | August 9, 2024 at 10:15pm CDT

The Orioles announced that they have traded right-hander Ryan Watson to the Giants in exchange for cash considerations. Trades after the deadline are allowed if the players involved have not been on a 40-man roster this year, which applies in this case.

Watson, 26, wasn’t selected in the 2020 draft, which was shortened to five rounds as a result of the pandemic. He then signed with the Orioles as an undrafted free agent and worked as a swingman for a few years with fairly unremarkable results. From 2021 to 2023, he tossed 259 2/3 innings across various levels with a 4.30 earned run average.

Here in 2024, he’s been working exclusively in relief with some signs of encouragement. He has tossed 22 2/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A with a 2.38 ERA. He has struck out 26.1% of batters faced while giving out walks at an 8% clip.

Despite those decent numbers, the O’s never called him up. They bolstered their bullpen at the deadline by acquiring Seranthony Domínguez and Gregory Soto from the Phillies, making it even less likely that Watson would be tapped. The Giants, on the other hand, traded Luke Jackson prior to the deadline and optioned their former closer Camilo Doval to the minors earlier tonight.

Watson hasn’t received much love from prospect evaluators but the Giants seem to be encouraged by his results this year. He will provide their bullpen with some non-roster depth and try to earn himself a roster spot.

The San Francisco Giants….haha. Zaidi has a 212 Million Dollar roster and is in 4th place and teetering at a middling.500
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen 212 Million Dollars spent more poorly

I’m guessing you don’t really watch the Yankees much then.

They did and I believe Josh Donaldson and Aaron Hicks made up half of the figure.

Giants August schedule should get them in the hunt in the wildcard.

Their rotation is pretty good now compared to even best rotations. Their September schedule is quite a bit tougher so they will need their starters geared up for it. They have a chance but their games against SD maybe hurt them as they better step it up..

Mis-spent payroll? What team in MLB has to have the most inefficient spending? What team routinely pays 110% tax on contracts, but doesn’t even make the playoffs?

I remember a time when the Angels had Ohtani, Trout, and Rendon on their roster

O’s probably trying to clear room for their draft picks against the organizational limit.

That and this might have been a scenario where the Giants were planning to take him in the minors Rule 5 this upcoming offseason so reached out to the O’s looking to deal. Could be they offered the O’s a bit more than they’d get via the Rule 5 transaction to get him into their system earlier.

I always thought traders could be made at anytime but only players traded before the deadline were playoff eligible. The rules could have changed when the whole trade deadline was re-vamped but I remember in the jays most recent heyday they acquired Darwin Barny from the LAD but he as not able to play in the post season that year. I believe that was 15 or 16

They dropped the “you can trade them if they clear revocable waivers” part after the regular trade deadline. Through August 31 they were playoff eligible and after that they were not (like Barney).

Now it’s “you can trade them if they haven’t been on a 40-man this season” with the same August 31 requirement for being playoff eligible.

What Brick House said. I think any less would almost kill waiver wire deals. You’d basically be adding a guy for three weeks. I make fun of waiver wire deals but you suddenly get a bunch of injuries or ineffective players and have playoff aspirations teams need an outlet at least to plug a gap and a change of scenery or pitching coach could lead them to being added to the playoff roster if not slated to be on it already

Time for the waiver wire trades. Help me out here who was it that was put out waivers years ago that wasn’t worth it and a team actually selected them and wasn’t pulled back. The White Sox were involved I think they picked him up but could have been the other way around. If you read this let me know if you remember who
