Giants Outright Andrew Knapp

By Steve Adams | August 31, 2024 at 3:04pm CDT

TODAY: Knapp clears waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area (X link).

AUGUST 29: The Giants announced Thursday that they’ve reinstated catcher Patrick Bailey from the 10-day injured list and designated fellow backstop Andrew Knapp for assignment to open roster space.

Knapp signed a big league deal with the Giants just last week, although it seemed clear at the time he’d only be relied upon while Bailey mended from an oblique strain that had sent him to the injured list. The 32-year-old Knapp went 1-for-6 in what was his second stint with the Giants, for whom he also played back in 2022.

With this brief Giants stint, Knapp has now played in parts of seven major league seasons, spending time with the Phillies, Mariners and Pirates in addition to his time in San Francisco. He’s a career .209/.309/.312 hitter in 879 plate appearances as a major leaguer. Knapp spent the bulk of the current season with the Rangers’ Triple-A club, hitting .294/.383/.457 in 81 games and 345 plate appearances. He’s a lifetime .259/.351/.415 hitter in parts of six Triple-A seasons.

Now that he’s been designated for assignment, Knapp will head to waivers and be made available to the other 29 clubs. He’ll likely clear, giving him the right to become a free agent, but a club in need of some catching depth down the stretch could look to bring him aboard on a minor league deal if and when that happens.

It’ll be interesting to see what Diaz does the rest of the season. He could’ve been a Giant and helped that team but Zaidi wanted to keep Casali (a great receiver who’s beloved by the pitching staff but who’s best days as a hitter are behind him). He also gives up a ton of stolen bases.

And yet over 23 years, 3 WSC to 1 for your beloved $Biilions spenders. Rice-a-Roni.

Now compare the Yankees to the current Zaidi San Fran tenure.

yankees are 487-355 since 2019, and after zaidi took over in the winter of 2018 the giants have gone 440-402. over six years, an average of 140 games (including the shortened ‘20 and this unfinished campaign), the yankees have won 47 more games. about eight more wins per year. aka the aaron judge effect. if you remove boone and cashman’s saving grace, a hitter better than anyone we have seen since bonds, the yankees are just the giants of the last six years.

Plus the Yankees are playing a bandbox ballpark…. Any NYYhome run records should have an asterisk after it like Bonds

In other words, the Yankees are better than the Giants. Even in the best division in baseball the Yankees are better. Also, that 8 average comes out higher had they played a full 162 in 2020. Zaidi should thank that fluke season for saving what has been a failure.

Can we talk about Bailey’s near identical stats between last season and where he currently stands this season???
    2023 – 97 games, 326 AB, 76 H, 1 3B, 7 HR, .233 BA
    2024 – 96 games, 326 AB, 76 H, 1 3B, 7 HR, .233BA
    Wow!

“Giants a once proud”…. “Waivers claims” are in the tool box of all Major League teams, both good and bad. The Giants being mediocre is more about their free agent signings and lack of drafting and player development. Several of the better MLB players have been claimed on waivers at some point in their careers.

“Cut an incredible reliever”…The Dodgers, one of the biggest spenders in MLB, make a waiver claim about once a week during the season. And as for “incredible reliever” why don’t you explain how the Giant’s competition is fighting to sign him since he’s so darn “incredible”.

      Incredible reliever ?
Operate like they are broke ?

I know where the embarrassment should lie. You need to pay attention.

      Nope. We just watch them.
Taylor has been the 2nd lefty pretty much all year. They clearly have miller above him. Paying 12m for a second lefty ? It’s a logical move.

If he is so incredible, why doesn’t a playoff contender claim him?

20-18 since All Star break. Dead last in steals and no homers. No power,no speed, almost last in runs scored. where are they going?
Team in limbo. No wonder nobody wants to sign here.
Thank you for ’10,’12 and ’14 or I might have left without a Championship.

Have to give Zaidi credit for getting the Braves to take on the rest of Soler’s contract. That was looking like a surefire albatross for SF, so they can reallocate those dollars hopefully to a better player this winter.

Well said. You also need to consider that the Giants gave him an extra year that no one else was giving in FA.
Getting out of that without financial injury was probably the highlight of his year ! Poor dude. It’s been horrible for him.

At best, that trade is simply an acknowledgement of the mistake he made by giving out that contract to begin with. Hardly anything to give credit for.

Yeah it is. Mistakes are going to happen. No one has a crystal ball. Outside of a few exceptions that regularly post here, everyone makes not ideal decisions. How you limit the damage when you do is very important. Soler arrived, and in between pop ups, decided to hang over the dugout rail with the body language of a lonely, homesick puppy. It was recognised and promptly fixed without too much damage being inflicted. Good management.

There is nothing good about management that consistently produces a .500 team with an over $200M payroll, regularly fails to realize there are 15 teams better than them at the trade deadline, and after 6 years of control, still ranks as a bottom 20% farm system,

Sure. Thats a different, broader discussion. It doesn’t change the fact that getting out of Soler like he did was good management.

To be blunt about it, the “there is nothing good about” attitude is why so many Zaidi detractors don’t get taken seriously. No ability for balance and fairness. Just put someone in your gun sights and fire away mercilessly until they are obliterated. Immature as fark.
