Giants’ Reggie Crawford Undergoes Shoulder Surgery

By Darragh McDonald | September 26, 2024 at 5:26pm CDT

Giants prospect Reggie Crawford has undergone shoulder surgery. “Will never be beaten,” Crawford said in a post on X along with a picture of himself recovering from the procedure. “Thank you to Dr. ElAttrache for taking care of the shoulder. I will be back soon [emoji of hands making a heart shape]” The club later announced to members of the beat, including Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic (X link), that the labrum surgery comes with an estimated recovery timeline of 10 to 12 months. He will therefore miss most or perhaps all of the 2025 season.

Crawford, now 23, was selected by the Giants with the 30th overall pick in the 2022 draft. A two-way player in college, the Giants let him both pitch and hit last year, though his workload was limited. He had undergone Tommy John surgery late in 2021 and didn’t pitch at all in 2022, then dealt with various other ailments during the 2023 season including mononucleosis and a strained oblique. He tossed 19 innings on the year and made 19 plate appearances, splitting his time between Single-A and High-A. He went to the Arizona Fall League but didn’t pitch, hitting .138/.282/.276 in his 71 plate appearances there.

The Giants decided to have him focus exclusively on pitching in 2024. He hadn’t hit much in a small sample of work since being drafted but he had impressed with his stuff from the mound. His fastball is in the triple-digit range while both Baseball America and FanGraphs praised his curveball earlier this year.

Crawford tossed 18 1/3 innings this year, split between Double-A and Triple-A. He allowed 2.95 earned runs per nine while striking out 38.5% of batters faced. His 15.4% walk rate was quite high, perhaps unsurprising for a guy with so much missed time.

But his last appearance was in June and he’s now slated for another lengthy absence. Crawford is clearly talented but the numerous bumps in the road are less than an ideal for a pitcher who is still developing and harnessing his stuff. At this point, between college and the minors, he’s only thrown 53 2/3 of official gameplay.

He’ll be eligible for the Rule 5 draft after sitting out the majority, or perhaps the entirety, of the 2025 campaign. Given his talent and status as a key prospect in the organization, the Giants will likely still protect him by giving him a roster spot. Still, this is a notable development for Crawford and the club. Getting the best version of Crawford was already going to be a project for the Giants and now he’s going to be on ice for close to a year, putting his development on pause.

Wonder why they waited so long to do surgery? He hasn’t pitched in months.

Looks like another Farhan first round fumble

Farhan isn’t a doctor. If you blame the pick, blame the several teams of doctors that evaluated him. It’s ridiculous how people are blaming Farhan for everything.

This team is literally showing they can kick ass. Not being motivated to do so until after elimination is a clubhouse issue, not a team building issue.

Literally every other team passed on drafting him in the first round. So why are you giving Farhan credit again?

The success rate of draft choices for any team aren’t great, so I don’t think it’s fair to pile on Zaidi over this. However, FZ could use some good press right about now, and this sure isn’t helping

While the Dodgers GM, Zahidi signed Pages, drafted Gavin Lux, Will Smith, Tony Gonsolin, Walker Buehler and Dustin May. They haven’t drafted as well since he left for San Francisco.

But the Dodgers always have better records each year with later picks and yet they have a better farm system lol. And who cares about draft picks when you can sign anyone you want? Ohtani has helped the dodgers in revenue this year 3x the previous 5 years. Star’s bring in money and championships. Not draft picks.

He tossed 8 innings total in college. Not sure I’d say that’s 2 way player. Mop up position players pitching aren’t 2 way and can reach that. Plus his last year in college he had 58 Ks and 17 walks in 232 PAs. I have no idea how that qualifies for a 1st rounder, even if it was underslot.

People who throw triple digits go in the first round

Mason Miller, Orion Kerkering, and Victor Vodnik aren’t 1st rounders. A lot of people can throw 100 these days. Not a lot of people can pitch at 100

Brentz, hader, Skubal. 2/3 first round talents but didn’t go 1st round. 100mph lefties. All threw more than 8 innings before being drafted as pitchers.

Ok so now he can focus on hitting right? He’s supposedly a 2 way player. Or lemme guess he’s garbage at hitting and was basically a 1st round pick because he hit BP tators and was a LH pitcher who can touch 99? He’s a dud maybe a future relief pitcher. Definitely not 1st round talent worth

“The Giants decided to have him focus exclusively on pitching in 2024”

Sure, when he bats under .200 + K’s 30 times in 58ABs – I think Pitchers in the league made that decision.

Giants have had bad luck with their top picks lately. Crawford has how many inn pitched so far? And he was pitching from the BP. Yea draft 1st round talent to relief pitch lol. That’s what late round starters that end up a bust. Giants have one of the worst farms. Bryce looks good that Martin kid looks like he could be the future strikeout leader if he makes it. People thought Vaun Brown was supposed to be the next future AS but he’s now old and can’t hit off speed pitches. I’ll bet once Luciano and Whisenhunt loose their value the giants might be lucky to not make the worst farm system next year

It’s been a total OF Brown-out for the Giants…first Gary…now Vaun – stop drafting outfielders named Brown!!

Go figure lol. Overrated talent is all they produce. People that should of been traded while they had value. Luciano should have been gone so long ago
