Cardinals Claim Roddery Muñoz

By Darragh McDonald | November 1, 2024 at 3:00pm CDT

The Cardinals announced that they have claimed right-hander Roddery Muñoz from the Marlins. The Fish evidently put him on waivers in recent days with St. Louis grabbing him off the wire.

Muñoz, 24, just made his major league debut with the Marlins this year. As they suffered a large number of injuries to their rotation, they had to reach into their depth, with Muñoz getting a shot in the big leagues.

The numbers weren’t especially impressive, as Muñoz posted a 6.53 earned run average in 82 2/3 innings this year. His 18.5% strikeout rate, 11.1% walk rate and 34% ground ball rate were all below league average.

Despite the uninspiring debut, Muñoz has a bit of prospect pedigree and some decent minor league results. Since the start of 2021, he has struck out 24.3% of batters faced on the farm. His 11.4% walk rate in that time was high and his 5.18 ERA unimpressive. However, a low strand rate of 64.8% could be a factor there, leading his 4.83 FIP to be a bit more palatable.

The Cardinals are set to engage in a reset year where they cut payroll and overhaul their player development apparatus. They just declined club options on Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn. They could look into trading pricey vets Sonny Gray, Erick Fedde, Miles Mikolas or Steven Matz this winter.

Those moves could be accompanied by others that bring in younger, cheaper and more affordable arms, but going with less-proven guys could mean depth arms become more important. Claiming Muñoz is the first of what could be many transactions that impact their rotation picture this winter.

26 Home runs in 82 innings and a career minor leaguer. He makes Kyle Gibson look like Corbin Burnes.

But he’s cheap. It’s all about the money with the billionaire Dewallet family.

The DeWitt family that just spent more on salary than they ever had before? Seems an odd way to hold on to money and be cheap.

Yep. This is a Chaim Bloom Rays era move. Pick up a pitcher with great stuff and poor results and make them better.

I like this move. I think I watched him in a start this year. The arm was impressive even if the results weren’t. This is exactly the kind of guy the Cardinals should be scooping up.

Yeah had to think he throws hard because his stats are unimpressive. Agree this is the kind of guy they need for sure. The starting pitching depth is good but hard throwing bullpen guys are a big need.

Curious if these players claimed like Munoz here have to be added to 40 man roster? Cards already need to make space to protect several guys from rule 5 draft. Believe they have to do that in next 10 days

If he was claimed off waivers, then he is going from the Marlins 40-man to the Cardinals 40-man. The Cards would have to try to waive him again to get him off the 40-man. Plus St. Louis declined options on three pitchers yesterday so they have plenty of room.

Adding Munoz leaves the Cardinals at 37/40 on the 40 man roster.

Hence and Koperniak are the only two guaranteed adds I think. Roby and Bedell were ineffective/hurt enough this year I think they’ll slide through without a claim.

The Cardinals will need minor league depth even if he doesn’t make the team.

Zero risk move but his numbers are not good.

He sucks. 82 Innings pitched. 26 Home Runs allowed. In a full season he will give up 60-70 Home Runs. Yep. Pitching in a park that favors pitching somewhat.

He traded Tommy Edman. For Fedde! Shame, shame, shame!

Masyn Winn made Edman redundant. I loved Edman as a player. I really did. Getting Fedde and Pham for Edman and a nobody prospect was exactly what they needed when still in the running for a wild card spot. Too bad the offense completely shut down after the trade. Let’s not forget Edman hadn’t played a single inning before the trade.

What games were you watching? He had 1 bad game with the Cardinals, his very first one against the Cubs. 6 of 10 starts he allowed 2 or fewer runs (5 of those he allowed only 1 run and went 2-1 with 2 No Decisions thanks to the offense disappearing.). He should have been 6-2 with the Cardinals with 2 no decisions.

I usually always agree with you on your comments CardsFan57!!!!!!

Please “don’t lower yourself” by defending John Mozeliak.

As Walt Jockerty’s Star players, managers and coaches retired, or thinned out——- John Mozeliak never developed the knack of replacing Star players with Star players as Jockerty’s priorities had been.

        Mozeliak’s philosophy of obtaining
“Low Hanging Fruit” Was and is a defeatist attitude.

Edman’s trade wasn’t the first Cardinals to be traded and almost immediately become an AL or NL League Championship MVP.
The Network broadcasting the World Series emphasized that had happened the last 3 out of 4 years.

Leadership such as these since the 2013 season have sent the Cardinals into a nose dive to where we are right now!!!

        I’m a 73 year old Cardinals fan.
I Never ever dreamed I would ever see a
St. Louis Cardinals Front Office as inepted as Mozeliak leadership has been.

Our Historic St. Louis Cardinals Franchise should never have hit Rock Bottom!!
Especially to the extent the club is having to ditch Star players to place the Cardinals in a rebuilding phase for who knows how many years.
Mozeliak is left in his position to totally destroy which has been built up since 1892.
        Why????

Mozeliak was the genius behind Jocketty. His drafts of Pujols and Molina provided the stars you’re crediting to Jocketty.

He’s always had at least two star level players on his teams as well, just like Jocketty did.

He has been much more successful than Jocketty as well. Jocketty had 5 losing seasons in 13 years. Mozeliak has had 1 in 17 years.

Carpenter was good, but injured with the Blue Jays. They cut him loose and the Cardinals allowed a good pitcher to heal.

Dave Duncan could do magic with his pitchers. He is long retired.
