Marlins To Hire Pedro Guerrero As Hitting Coach

By Mark Polishuk | November 10, 2024 at 10:10pm CDT

The Marlins have hired Pedro Guerrero as their new hitting coach, according to The Athletic’s Katie Woo and Andrew Baggarly.  Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El Extrabase reported earlier tonight that Guerrero and the Marlins were nearing a deal, and Baggarly reported last week that Guerrero was interviewing with Miami about an unspecified position on their coaching staff.

Guerrero comes to the Marlins after three seasons as an assistant hitting coach with the Giants.  Notably, the first two seasons of Guerrero’s tenure in San Francisco continued his association with Gabe Kapler, who was then the Giants’ manager and is now Miami’s assistant general manager.  Before coming to the Giants, Guerrero was also an assistant hitting coach with the Phillies from 2018-21, overlapping Kapler’s time as Philadelphia’s manager during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Miami has basically nowhere to go but up when it comes to hitting, as the 62-100 team naturally ranked near the bottom of the league in most major batting categories.  Former hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coaches Bill Mueller and Jason Hart can’t be entirely blamed for the lack of production, of course, as the Marlins’ rebuild left the roster increasingly gutted of big-league caliber talent as the season developed.  That said, the Fish also didn’t even hit much when they reached the playoffs in 2023, as Miami ranked 26th in the league in runs scored but benefited from an exceptional 33-14 record in one-run games.

Now that Clayton McCullough has been installed as the Marlins’ new manager, Guerrero is the first member of what will be an entirely new set of coaches.  Miami underwent an internal overhaul after the season that saw the club fire not only the whole incumbent coaching staff, but also everyone from the training staffers to clubhouse attendants.  This leaves the Marlins with plenty of positions to fill in the coming weeks and months, and with McCullough now in place as manager, hirings figure to begin quickly.

As for the Giants, they’ve now lost two members of their three-person staff of hitting instructors, between Guerrero’s departure and Justin Viele leaving to become the Rangers’ new hitting coach.  Woo and Baggarly write that the Giants will install just one new hitting coach instead of two, and that sole new hire will team with the returning Pat Burrell as the hitting-coach tandem.

Can’t say I know much about Pedro as a hitting coach, but I thought he was a great hitter.

Wrong Pedro Guerrero. You’re thinking of the former Dodgers/Cardinals star and WS MVP.

Not him? I have no idea who this fellow is. The one who played for the Cardinals was a very likable fellow besides being a good hitter.

          Per wiki:

The former Dodger and Cardinal was born in ’56, and the new Marlins hitting coach Pedro Manuel Guerrero was born in ’88. Apparently, they share the same h

It’s actually not the former big league player Pedro Guerrero. It’s a different former Dodger minor leaguer Pedro Guerrero… I mean, it’s A Pedro Guerrero, just not THE Pedro Guerrero…
Will the real Pedro Guerrero please stand up?

Knew he was arrested in a larger scale drug bust. Forgot he was aquitted. Had no idea he had a stroke. Side note: the article I found about the stroke said doctors feared he was brain dead, but a second a opinion found he was merely in a coma. Tell me Dr. Nick did not immediately pop in your mental imagery…

Not him but old school Pedro Guerrero had a great bat but terrible fielder at 3B that the Dodgers had to move him for good to the OF.

Lasorda when asking him what goes on in his mind when he plays 3B, Guerrero answers I only think about two things. First, I hope they don’t hit the ball to me. And the second asked Lasorda? I hope they don’t hit the ball to Sax at 2B. Classic.

2 Petey Guerreros n frm same village. Dodger Guerrero was something w/the bat in his hands. Believe he finished career w/exactly .300 batting avg. But for all his talent @the plate he was the definition of a butcher when they had em @3rd. Fielding n throws were brutal. They say Max Muncy is bad 3rdbaseman now, compared to Petey G. he’s Brooks Freakin Robinson. Ball always found em too. Those were dire times in Dodgerland w/him @3rd n Saxie over @2nd. Defense matters.

I also have a Pedro story. Pedro and Don Drysdale both met two women at a bar during a road trip. Don was Dodger broadcaster until he passed away suddenly in 1993.
They both ended up getting robbed by the two women they met at their hotel bar due to being roofied after going back to their room.
It was buried in the LA Times. But I still remember reading it. Being surprised about it.

Don passing was terrible. It happened in Montreal. Vin Scully had to announce it before the game after his wife was notified. This was a few weeks after Roy Campanella had passed.

Pedro was a dangerous hitter without a position to play. Not the power of Kevin Mitchell or Edgar Martinez. But when hot. Like 1985 during June-July. He carried that Dodger team to the playoffs.

Appreciate your condescending tone while being wrong.

Drysdaie announced with Hawk in the 80s after leaving the Angels. Hawk was announcing with Tom Paciorek and they both cried on the air when announcing it. Drysdale was announcing with the Dodgers. I’ve been listening to Dodgers games since 1975.

Go to You Tube and it has the whole thing of you want to check your facts.

Indeed you are correct. Dandy Don was broadcasting for the Dodgers when he died in 1993, after a game in Montreal. Vin Scully had to break the news to the fans the next day. He later said it was the hardest thing he ever had to do on the air.
