Manfred: Golden At-Bat Idea Has Gotten “A Little Buzz”

By Anthony Franco | December 6, 2024 at 2:35pm CDT

December 6: Jesse Rogers of ESPN followed up with Manfred about the golden at-bat idea. The commissioner emphasized that there’s “a very long road” from an idea being considered before it can be implemented and that he’s not personally in favor of the change, though he does encourage things like this to be discussed.

December 2: MLB hasn’t shied away from considering rule changes over the past few seasons. The league has unilaterally implemented a pitch clock, a three-batter minimum for pitchers (barring injury), shift limitations, and incentivized base stealing with pickoff limits and larger bases. MLB and the Players Association also agreed to implement a universal designated hitter in the 2022 collective bargaining agreement.

That hasn’t dissuaded commissioner Rob Manfred from considering other changes. Perhaps the most extreme suggestion that the commissioner has publicly floated would be the possibility of implementing a “golden at-bat” rule. Jayson Stark of The Athletic published a lengthy piece on Monday detailing potential variations of that concept.

At its core, the golden at-bat idea is to allow a team one opportunity to call upon a hitter who is in the lineup but not due for the upcoming at-bat. It’d be somewhat akin to pinch hitting with a player who is already in the game. As Stark notes, the rule could be narrowed to limit when teams could use the golden at-bat (e.g. after a certain inning, only when they’re trailing, etc.)

In October, Manfred suggested there could be some support within the league for exploring that concept. In an appearance on The Varsity podcast with Puck’s John Ourand (X link), Manfred said at the time “there was a little buzz around” the concept at a recent owners meeting. The commissioner said that idea is “in the conversation-only stage right now.”

It’s worth stressing that there’s nothing to suggest MLB has any plans to test this idea. There’s a significant gap between it surfacing in casual conversation and its appearance in any of Spring Training, the minors, or at the All-Star Game — much less in meaningful MLB contests.

The purpose would be to increase the number of high-leverage plate appearances that go to top hitters. That’d create more drama in close games, but it’d be a radical change to the sport. The fixed nature of the batting order often leaves huge at-bats in the hands of less heralded players. One could argue that’s a flaw in comparison to other sports where teams can choose to turn the ball to their stars when games are on the line. At the same time, many of baseball’s most magical moments come when players at the bottom of the order rise to the occasion with key hits.

While implementing one golden at-bat wouldn’t entirely eliminate those opportunities, it’d reduce them. It’s also an inherently artificial measure that’d represent a fundamental change from the way baseball has been played throughout its history. That’s arguably true of some other recent rule adjustments, but the golden at-bat would probably have a much bigger effect than any of the other changes.

Stark’s column goes into much more detail about the strategy implications that would be at play, as well as concerns about tradition and inflated record totals that’d come with allowing teams to give their best hitter an extra at-bat every game. Stark speaks with players, front office personnel, and longtime skipper Joe Maddon (many of whom express their disapproval for the concept) about the idea in a piece that’s worth a full read.

Here’s how it could be implemented. The Golden at Bat hitter would have to have been a 1st or 2nd round pick. Plus, he must have had a minimum of 15 at bats in the previous 5 games unless one of those games was a double header due to a rainout. He will be chosen by putting no less than five players numbers in a hat to be drawn by the Homeplate umpire. The hitter then starts with a 1 ball-1 strike count unless the bases are loaded and then he starts with 3 ball-0 strike count. The defense must shift with all 7 fielders standing no less that 7 feet from third base. (Or first if the hitter bats left-handed.) For a fee, spectators will have a betting device in their hands. If you bet that the hitter gets a hit, strikes out, etc. and you win, there will be a brief ceremony on the field where the fan gets his/her logo windbreaker or hat and their face on the Jumbotron. This all designed to create excitement!
(Addendum: Manfred, bad idea. Leave the game alone.)

Manfred is a clown who only cares about money, has no heart or respect for the game. This new idea of his is gross, has nothing at all to do with the history or beauty of the game.

His (and the Owners’) shamelessness is on display and it’s disgusting.

Ohtani’s 3 run HR off Cease potentially prevented a SD sweep over the Dodgers. There is no Freddie Freeman walkoff HR if Ohtani doesn’t hit a double off Kahnle in the 8th and gets to 3B with heads up baserunning to tie the game on a Betts sac fly.

The only statue I saw was 24 innings of 0 runs for the Padres.

The Dodgers should erect a 24 inning of 0 runs statue honoring the Padres and erecting it over the 5 or 405 facing San Diego. Could be like the Statue of Liberty with an amended logo: “give me your tired, your poor, your 0 for 4s”

It’s a terrible idea , but I guess it could be OK for extra innings only

I’d rather for something like this be one pinch hit at-bat where the the replaced player isn’t removed from the game.

So instead of this drastic shenanigans, it could help get guys ABs and give more starts to fielding specialists who could get spotted one AB from the bench

Is rather they just leave the game of baseball alone and do what makes more sense like contracting to 24 teams and making working up through the minor leagues something that pays instead of costs players.

I agree with the first part, which is why the change I suggested was pretty minimal to get the bench bats some extra swings and cause some excitement when (the fans think a crappy catcher or SS is coming up to bat and) the free pinch hit is cashed-in.

Could see that being cool without changing a ton like the proposed golden at bat would

I personally like the new extra innings rule and the pitch clock. A lot actually. Not all change is bad.

        On your second point.
I have no clue what you mean by reducing to 24 and am not aware of the minor league costs, but I do know a lot of minor league rosters are filled out with guys making 60k with the mutual understanding that they’re probably not going to get a call up to bigs.

I personally like both a lot

Manfred messed up playoffs really bad. That everyone agrees.

Gok – I am neutral on the pitch clock. It’s nice to have the faster pace, but I wouldn’t want big games to be decided by rules violations.

I absolutely hate the ghost runner. The fact it’s used only in the regular season but not in the postseason is all you need to know.

You know Manfred can’t pass any rule changes without ownership support, right?

Aren’t you a dodger fan? You think the universal dh has done too much damage to baseball? If that was the case ohtani wouldn’t be able to dh. He’s too important as a pitcher and a hitter to limit him to one or the other. I personally like the universal dh even though a lot don’t for some reason. Even as a braves fan, I’d rather watch ohtani hit 40-50 bombs a year than watch a non-hitting pitcher have like 1 or 2 hits and strike out 100 times a year. Plus it limits a pitcher coming down with a freak injury while hitting or on the base paths. I will admit though that I’ll always remember Huascar ynoa’s couple of home runs he hit a few years ago and Max fried’s walk off hit the last year of pitchers hitting in the NL. And who can ever forget bartolo Colon’s home run in San Diego? But that’s my point he finally hit that home run after over a decade of nothing but striking out.

Im against the golden at bat rule, I think it is utterly stupid. and nothing I said was trying to “prove you wrong” I didn’t realize I was getting argumentative with you, merely conversating. And it isn’t an extension of the dh, it’s basically eliminating the pinch hitter. Which I’m also against. I’m also against the ghost runner. I’m against robot umpires too. If they want to implement something like that, just allow replays on balls and strikes, but it can only be allowed in crucial times of the game like 7th inning and up when the difference of the game is only like one run, or up to 3 runs if runners are on base and the challenging team is behind. I like human interaction in the game and it’s always been like that and shouldn’t change in my opinion. The one rule I am happy with is the universal dh. That’s about the only rule I like. Base running rules I’m 50/50 on. I do like the limited pick off attempts because who likes watching a pitcher throw over 5 times during an at bat? But the bigger bases I don’t like. Speedy players will steal bases regardless and I don’t like the fact that catchers have to be dang near elite to throw out if they’re even lucky 20% of base stealers. back in 2023 Freddie Freeman had no business stealing 23 bases and would have never done so had the bases not been bigger which Gave him and others an advantage over catchers the game has never seen before.

I used to be against the DH in the National League. I still think pitchers should hit for themselves. As a compromise I’d suggest the DH hit for any other player but the pitcher. Fans shouldn’t have to watch players like Austin Barnes or Chris Taylor or Kevin Kiermaier waste at bats. The strategy of pinch hitting has been removed from the game.

So the answer is seeing a light-hitting infielder come to the plate in a game-critical AB? By your own argument, the game would be better with the golden AB.

You are welcome to try to make a consist argument for the DH and against the golden AB. Good luck!

The difference between that light hitting infielder and a pitcher is the light hitting infielder can still hit .230 have a few home runs and 20-30 RBIs this meanwhile the pitcher comes to the plate and 9 times out of 10 strikes out. The pitcher would hit .090 on the year with 2 RBIs and 100 strikeouts. Considering pitchers haven’t hit in 3 years now it would be stupid to make them try to learn to do it again. The results would be even worse than before they got rid of it. There is the consistent argument you were asking for. now say something that actually makes sense.

A distinction without a difference. The purpose of the DH and the golden AB is to increase offense, pure and simple. They have absolutely no other purpose that you or anyone else can name. I also never saw a pitcher with a 90% strikeout rate, so this is just a fabricated argument. Lots of pitchers could hit just as well as any defensive specialist, and they also worked on their productive out skills. Further, pitchers when they still batted, typically came to the plate, at most, three times in game. I also said nothing about reinstating pitcher batting, so that’s another irrelevant argument.

Well, you failed, but at least you tried.

See now you are flip flopping. You say how the universal dh damaged baseball, and you argue for every reason not to have it and to let pitchers hit, then say you aren’t arguing for it to be reinstated. Well nothing you said indicates that, and as much as you try to stay neutral you’ve chosen the side you want to represent. There isn’t anything wrong with that, but to say that pitchers can hit as well defensive specialists who still have to practice to hit everyday while pitchers do not, is asinine. I’d rather have a .230 defensive specialist hit over a .090 pitcher. And late in the game replace that defensive specialist with a pinch hitter. No need for a golden at bat, which again is not and will never be an extension of the dh just because it makes for more excitement and offense. What it will do is replace the pinch hitter and that is something that I have said I’m not at all in favor of.

No, I am being perfectly consistent. I have not argued word one against allowing pitchers to hit. In fact, just the opposite. I can hardly imagine how you missed that. I also argued that loving the DH and hating this proposed golden AB is logically inconsistent, which obviously it is since they both serve exactly the same purpose. Deal with that, why don’t you?

Now you are just spitting out words. I liked it better when you were trying.

You literally bring nothing to the table except starting an argument that you can’t finish. You talk about me “trying” but do nothing more than a bad troll job indicating the dh damaged baseball, and argued for pitchers to hit and why they should, then say you don’t want it to change back to the way it was. Then you try to say it’s an extension of the dh and try to make it seem like I am in favor of it when I said numerous times I am not. Stop trolling and either have a productive argument, one that I didn’t even start, but called me out for no reason other than trying to conversate. And stop flip flopping. Either you want the dh or you don’t. If you don’t then no reason to argue for every reason a pitcher should hit and how it damaged baseball. And I will say it again, again for those deaf ears of yours… I am against the golden at bat, and it is not an extension of the dh just because it may add more offense to a game. What it will do is eliminate the pinch hitter late in games. And do the math dumb dumb, who is better, a defensive specialist hitting .230 on the year with 3-5 home runs and 25-30 RBIs or a pitcher batting .090 with a 75% strikeout rate with maybe 2-3 RBIs per year? It’s not that hard to do, so don’t question if I’m trying or not when you brought nothing to the table, and then flip flop your stance on certain baseball related issues

A DH gets a set slot in the lineup. Obviously being able to tag in a superstar for another AB isn’t quite the same.

For double headers why not do something else innovative. Lot of knuckle heads sitting around doing nothing in the dugout. How’s about 2 games at once. Just turn the diamond sideways and have home plates at opposite sides of an equilateral triangle? Pretty zippy with both teams on defense simultaneously. Free defensive sub in when your fielders at bat on the other diamond. Who says no? Zippy way to get through the long 162 schedule. Shorten the season from Memorial day to Labor day when weather nice and kids and teachers are out. World Series over before football starts.

I like the golden batter rule in Banana Ball. Works great there. Leave it there, not in MLB.

If we’re going to import a Banana Ball rule, I’d rather have the designated runner. Almost any MLB hitter has enough of a chance to be interesting to watch, and we all have our favorites who aren’t necessarily the stars, but it’s not very interesting watching a Rowdy Tellez take his lead off first base. Put somebody in there who has the ability to steal. As a bonus, it’ll really annoy Rickey Henderson when a pinch runner breaks his record.

One of the best aspects of baseball is that the big spot can belong to guys like Bucky Dent or raji Davis. I hate this idea, the lack of control makes baseball unique in comparison to other sports. If this was basketball Betts would always get the at bat but in baseball Edman gets the chance to etch himself into the history books.

I have an idea… I know it’s going to sound nuts… but how about… RE-WORK the competitive angle to keep the game interesting for more than just the elite squads that can spend the money needed to be regularly relevant. Half the league’s fanbase loses interest by July 1st because they know they typically can’t compete with the spending that the elite squads get away with. This isn’t about who wins the World Series. That’s a short term, invite only tournament where anyone can get hot/cold and anything can happen. This is leaning more towards the likely hood for teams to win their own division. NL West has been a one team show for how long? Same for AL East and AL West. Sure, wildcard teams can get hot in the playoffs… but they rarely stick. The top spenders regularly win their division year in and year out. The competitive balance is incredibly OUT OF BALANCE.

Question for you, what’s your rework? What do you have in mind besides crying about it. I’m sick of hearing this lame argument. We get it, teams are spending too much and you don’t like it. Neither of us have a chance at actually fixing things but lets hear it, what’s your solution?

The NL West has 4 teams in the top half of the entire MLB that are spending the most money. They are just trying to win. That’s it, they are spending in way that they feel best can get them to the dance. Which, as you say, is all you need if you’re getting hot at the right time. The Diamondbacks of 2023 are a prime example. And by the way, of those 4, the Dodgers weren’t even the top spender of 2024.

The AL East has been won by 4 different teams in the last 6 years. The Rays, the Yankees, the O’s and the Red Sox. Only 2 of which are considered big market teams. Clearly showing that smart management and hiring can get you anywhere.

You need ownership that’s willing to spend and management that knows how to spend it the right way. Seems simple when you write it down.

But ask yourself, would you prefer an owner that made billions of dollars to buy a team, continue to use those other channels to make money (which they all have), and to not take any profit from their baseball team? Like a Steve Cohen. Spending out of his other businesses to fund his dream of giving NYC Mets a title? Or your owner? lol

All I say to you Baby, is grow up. Learn to understand the business side of the game. As it is very much a business. I wish it wasn’t but still, it is what it is. Ask your owner to spend more money. Money that they are pocketing for their own benefit.

How can you watch players like Ohtani sign $700 million contracts and not see that there needs to be a major change to the competitive balance of the league. It’s depressing to see your teams best player traded because baseball economics make it impossible for a small market team to sign them back.
You can say that owners are cheap but there’s no possible way for them to compete with the likes of LA, New York, or Chicago.
They should just make the mlb a 12 team league I guess. Because people outside the bigger cities don’t want to see a team that’s irrelevant.
The reason why football is so popular isn’t just because it’s a better product on the field, it’s because that every single team has the exact same chance to win. Organizations only loss because they’re mismanaged.
Look at the most popular teams in the NFL compared to the MLB. Some how Pittsburgh isn’t small market nor is Green Bay. Kansas City Royals only have a small window of competition, but somehow the Chiefs are the standard their league.
Keep talking about people whining about competive balance. This sport is irrelevant to the majority of the country now a days. Somehow the Reds had one of the best lineups of all time in 75 and 76. You think they would be able to replicate that again? Hell no! Manford and MLB players union are so short sighted. How about paying minor leaguers better instead of one player making $700 million.

When making that argument, for or against the cap, a lot of people don’t even consider what you said. I know I never really did until you mentioned teams specifically. Some of your NFL teams that are perennial contenders (Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Kansas City, Baltimore, Cincinnati) are considered “small” markets in the MLB.

My earliest baseball memories are of the 1986 World Series. I don’t think the idea is bad in the abstract. It’s a perfectly workable variation on the game of baseball.

The badness comes from the change itself. If this was some new league, I’d support it. But it’s too different from how MLB has always worked, so it shouldn’t be done in MLB.

I’d agree in the same way that I think tiebreaker penalty kicks are cool in soccer, but I don’t think it should be part of the main game at any point. One of the integral parts of BB to me is that you need a full team (even if great players pull more than their weight); giving greater opportunity to any one person on a team seems off to me.

Maximizing monetization of MLB is Manfred’s top priority. He doesnt care who he sells out, he has already shown he doesn’t truly care about the history of the game. It’s a long season and he wants more eyeballs on every single game, and if that means turning the game into a circus if it’ll put more money in owners pockets, he intends to do it. Since these things take time, and he knows it, he starts floating the idea, soon there will be minor league trials, and then the inevitable implementation in MLB.

Baseball is the only sport you can’t decide who gets the ball, who’s hitting, etc. It’s a pure game that you gotta play the cards (lineup) you’re dealt. This is a bad idea and clearly a way to get certain players more opportunities for big moments. These are t-ball rules, not big league rules.

I’d rather see them implement a 45 man roster with a 30 man active roster where you keep 4 starters inactive on off days that they don’t pitch. Maybe that would combat the rash of arm injuries in baseball by having more pitchers available. The amount of TJ surgeries is an epidemic, they need to figure a way to either reduce innings pitched or make it harder to throw 100 mph. More rest should help them combat these issues.

No no no! I don’t want MORE churn in pitching! I want starters who go 7+ innings. I’d rather see them find a way to let starters ease off a little.

I’d propose a rule that a starter who is pulled before the sixth and given up five or fewer runs has to spend 10 days on the IL. Teams would then have an incentive to condition starters for durability. If that affects performance, I’d support tinkering with the mound to compensate.

Let me correct that. The person who came up with this silly idea was a little buzzed., Because no sober person would propose anything this ridiculous.

A better rule would be allowing a team one opportunity per game to skip a weak hitter’s turn at bat. Don’t remove the player from the game. Just enable the team to avoid letting him bat that one time. Call it the Austin Hedges Rule.

Just when you thought they couldn’t possibly muck it up worse with ghost runners in extra inning games (except in the playoffs) some baseball heritage hater comes up with something else to ruin the integrity of the game. Might as well call ground rule doubles home runs again.

MLB should focus on changing the things that need changing like moving the Rays to a location that isn’t in hurricane alley. Or moving the A’s to Portland Oregon to be closer to Seattle. Las Vegas is for degenerate gamblers & should never be the home of a Major League team.

To avoid the stat distortion thing you could make the team skip a prior at bat of the star player. So to be eligible to golden at bat your turn has to be skipped once.

That would add another tactical aspect of when to skip which player to make him eligible and avoid players getting another extra 162 at bats that distort stats.

Then liberal substution (players can come back in the game after being pinch hit for and pitchers can come back too at anytime). Then if the Dodgers only want Ohtani to hit, he will be allowed to take all the at bats even when he is already on base. Then managers can choose to rewind an inning, say if the other team scored like 5 runs the opposing manager can call for a rewind and they have to play it again! But only if they are a big market team…

If we let him go on any further, there will be the “mulligan rule” to allow a do-over on one strike three call or cancel a fly out where a hitter just go under a pitch and flied out. I don’t understand his constant need to change the game. When one tries to perfect a beautiful game, it gets ruined.

Baseball is the only sport where players don’t freely exit and enter the game at the will of the manager/coach. Heck, let’s just go all the way and use every player as an interchangeable part. Need a better defense later in the game? No problem. Slide in defense first players who can’t hit, but when their turn comes up, put back in the bat first player.
Can they screw up the game even more? I have complete confidence in them.

    “an inherently artificial measure “

The whole game is artificial. There’s nothing objectively wrong with the proposed rule. It would be a perfectly fun and exciting and workable variation on the game of baseball. It would give the manager some strategic decision making options, not unlike the pre-DH shuffling of pitchers, or pinch hitting and shuffling position players.

My objection is that it’s too big of a change to something that has never changed in the history of the game. This is as big, if not bigger, than when the DH was introduced. I had forgotten that the bases were sized up until I read this column, and being reminded kind of takes the luster off Ohtani’s 50/50 season a little bit. Well, this would have the same effect on the next great clutch hitting performance.

Let’s ask the ghost of Bobby Thompson what he thinks about this rule. Aaron Boone would be working the desk at the Miami Sheraton right now if this rule had been around in 2003.

On the other hand, Jackie Bradley Jr. might still be patrolling center field. Big Papi’s clutch career would be even more impressive.

Pros and cons. But this is a solution in search of a problem. If it had always been this way, then fine. But change just for the sake of change isn’t the way to go.

How about they change the standings to be based on run differential, instead of wins/losses? That means that it doesn’t matter which team has more runs after nine innings. All that matters is that cumulatively you rack up more runs, and give up fewer, across the whole season.

That means no more extra inning games, because tie games don’t matter. It also means that you don’t put in the scrubs in blowout games, because every run counts. You have an incentive right through the last pitch of the night to remain competitive.

Too radical a change? Yep. But not any crazier than this current proposal.

Next up: adding an extra base that no one can find, running the bases backwards after the second inning, pitchers throwing underhanded in even innings, players parking personal vehicles on the field, and Hard Liquor and Handgun Wednesdays. You can thank me later.

    Cool.

How about a rule there they put the ball on a tee but then the batter is blindfolded and while he’s swinging the opposing team can have a guy standing there blowing on the ball trying to knock it off the tee before he hits it.

Figure out whichever fielding player has the most V02 max and statcast the wind speed.

Give the best “blower” a gold glove.

The pitch clock I dislike, but I can see the reasoning behind it.
The “ghost runner” extra inning rule I dislike, but as long as it stays out of the playoffs I am ok with it.
Universal DH I was ok with, I liked having the slightly tweaked rules between the leagues. But I am thankful to not watch pitchers hit.

This Golden At Bat rule is so insane that it would drive fans away from the sport. They’re just trying to cram more Ohtani/Judge ABs down fans throats. Baseball isn’t about just feeding your superstars ABs, it truly is a team sport. Sometimes your worst hitter is up at the most impactful moment. Either pinch hit for them with a player off the bench, or let it ride.

Maybe the defense needs a Golden Mound Visit where they can bring in any pitcher for the 1 AB, but they get the full time to warm up. That is any pitcher on their roster, doesn’t matter if they already pitched. They can be pulled after the 1 AB (and reenter later) or stay in the game.

This is just stupid. What makes seeing a star player in a high leverage situation something like Bonds coming up in the bottom of the 9th down two with runners on the corner against a top end closer is that it’s not manufactured, there are 8 and a half innings of variables involved. Manfred thinks he’s the commissioner in BASEket ball.

2024’s MLB average slash line was .243/.312/.399.

The idea is to try to increase overall offense without drastically increasing game times. Not sure how that is going to be achieved when pitching changes will be made for “golden at-bat” hitters.

Worst idea I’ve ever heard. Tell me what this adds to the game because I can tell you what it takes away: the very idea of a batting order. Who needs a batting order if you can bring up Othani or Judge every time? And it makes the competitive imbalance ever worse between the haves and have nots in free agency. So, it must be an agent idea to increase the market value of aging DH types by making them PHs too.

The owners should FIRE that idiot Rob Manfred for even “floating” this MORONIC rule change.

Manfred seems intent on making a mockery of the game. I was fine with implementing a reasonable pitch clock because too many batters & pitchers took a coffee break in between pitches.

But Manfred overreacted with the 15 & 20 second, now 15 & 18 second rule.

Pitchers are throwing all out on virtually every pitch nowadays, with more pitchers than ever consistently throwing 97-103 mph, so 15 & 18 seconds between pitches places an Entirely Unreasonable Risk of Injury on all pitchers.

The human body was not designed to sustain throwing 3 pitches in roughly 60 seconds at speeds of 95-100+ mph. That’s a recipe for destroying a pitcher’s arm over time.

How about we increase offense and solve the problem of starting pitchers who only pitch 5 innings with a rule that only changes roster management? Here’s the idea: a pitcher who starts the game must go on a 10 day restricted list unless he either (a) completes 6 innings, or (b) gives up more than 5 runs, or (c) suffers an injury and is placed on the IL. It counts as a “start” for the purpose of this rule if he gets the final out of the first inning.

The 10-day restricted list is intended to make that starter unavailable for his next start. Basically, if you”re going to remove him it should be for injury and he should go on the IL. So team loses the pitcher for one start if he’s pulled early, with three exceptions to allow for three legit reasons to pull a pitcher early:

    (1) to protect against aggravating a minor injury a pitcher may be pulled in the first without losing him for his next start. If a starter is pulled in the first, he doesn’t go on the RL. But the pitcher who relieves him must pitch through the sixth.

    (2) if a pitcher is genuinely ineffective he can be pulled. I picked 5 runs in six innings, but that’s just a stab in the dark. I’d be open to refining the definition of “ineffective.”

    (3) that leaves only injury as a legitimate reason to pull a pitcher before 6, and it has to be an injury that actually puts him on the IL, which has functionally the same effect on the team roster.

Significantly, strategy is not a legitimate basis to pull a starter u def this rule. There’s a cost to pulling a starter for a matchup, or on a pitch count, or before the third time through the lineup.

The player is entitled to pay during his time on the list. It is not intended to be a penalty for the player. It is intended to encourage teams to condition starters for durability, which should have the effect of dialing back intensity and increasing offense marginally.

I think what you have here is a really good idea, but not completely practical. You definitely have to account for some kind of pitch limit or (just using him as a recent example) Paul Skenes would’ve had several starts skipped. Guys coming back from injury, or coming up from the minors need some kind of pitch limit or TJ surgeries will be more prevalent than they already are. And you could argue that they could come out of the bullpen, which is true, but it also completely alters their pregame preparation. So…I do think you’re onto something that I truly like…minor tweaks would be needed.

Right, but the point of the rule is to force teams to condition and train starters to be more durable, and thereby reduce the amount of TJ surgery, etc. I think it’s pretty well established that modern pitching mechanics are at the root of the problem, and teams could be training and conditioning pitchers with different strategies which would improve durability, but which would sacrifice effectiveness in the form of velocity, spin rate, etc.

So yes, as he has been trained now, it would have significantly impacted Skenes’ season. But what if he had been trained to pitch like Maddux instead of like Sale? That’s the goal.

So your endgame is to pigeonhole every starter into the Greg Maddox style of finesse? That simply won’t work. Not only was Maddox an absolute master of spin and control, but he was an absolute genius. He wasn’t who he was just because of his ability to move the ball with pinpoint control, but because he was smarter than damn near every major league hitter. I do understand where you are coming from, but some guys are just built differently than others. Some guys have natural abilities that others don’t and trying to train guys to be like someone else simply isn’t the answer. Say what you will, but this influx TJ surgery starts when kids are very very young. Year round travel ball for 13-14 years is what’s ruining arms. I guarantee you Greg Maddox, Tom Glavine, Nolan Ryan, Bob Gibson, etc. didn’t play baseball year round.

The ability to throw 100 MPH is far more common than the ability to throw as accurately as Maddux. The people who want every pitcher to emulate Maddux don’t understand this.

Hallow records, especially season records, would fall like trees in a hurricane,
Even in blowouts in either direction, why would you not give Ohtani or Judge the extra plate appearance for record’s sakes?
We would have players getting 125 or more PA, how could records stand against the onslaught of players with 800+ PAs
    Somebody wants this?

Aside from the extra innings rules, I have liked all the rule changes and they seem pretty effective. Definitely more action and a lot less dead space.

This one seems pretty dumb though and I don’t think this will ever happen.

Extra innings is the most absurd. So is free balls and strikes though. So is restricting throw overs. So is not having to throw a pitch to walk someone. Changing the distance to the bases… dont forget the dh and ending league play. I mean theyre almost all stupid tbh. But if the goal was making the game shorter than the average drive time to get there they succeeded

To each their own. Obviously the actual game time is shortened but each team is still getting 27 outs. Just unnecessary dead space is being removed. If you like watching pitchers hold the ball for 30 seconds between pitches, watching guys adjust their batting gloves and seemingly endless mound meetings.. I guess the rules just aren’t for you. I’m more interested in the game action, opposed to what happens inbetween.

Bring a friend to the game then you will have someone to talk to while you watch your favorite sport. Baseball is never just about the action and the fact that you see it that way makes me feel sympathy. I personally dont watch baseball with the hope the game is as short as possible, and catering to such people will only destroy the once great sport. If you dont like it dont watch, but I guess they desire to market to the goldfish community

I’m not opposed to a resub, meaning a player subbed out can come back in. Example: down by 1, RISP, pinch runner which then scores, and when pinch runner has AB in extras, use subbed out hitter who was pinch ran for to bat. Only 1 resub allowed

A room full of suck ups working for the commissioner and shaking their heads up and down at brain farts is not “buzz.”

There are so many reasons why this is dumb, but I’ll just do the most obvious one.

So, if a great, large payroll team is losing a game they can have a super star take an at bat out of turn, potentially batting twice in the last inning if trailing while the other team still has to deal with the 3-batters faced rule upsetting any match up reasons used.

    Idiotic.

Why not make it a Golden Arches AB, where one hitter must dress up as Ronald McDonald, complete with the big shoes and make-up. If he hits a single, everyone in the ballpark gets a burger. A double nets people a double burger. A homer warrants a Big Mac. The defense gets to have one player dress up as the Hamburglar. Oh yeah, this idea has great promise.

Nope. He is trying to turn it into basketball with this idea. In basketball in crunch time, you have the superstar and 4 space fillers. Everyone knows where the ball is going, the other guys are just there. To me, the best part about baseball is that ANYONE can be the hero on any given day. We remember Francisco Cordero. We remember Bill Mazeroski. We remember Bucky Dent. We remember David Freese. We remember Bobby Thomson. Under Manfred, we wouldn’t because those guys likely wouldn’t get to the plate.

Better solution if you are trying to give the best players a chance to impact the game late is to start the ninth inning at the top of the order just like the first inning. It’s fair for all teams so doesn’t favor the ones with superstars and guarantees the offense is in the best position possible at the end of the game.
