Tigers Interested In Ha-Seong Kim

By Mark Polishuk | December 8, 2024 at 10:38am CDT

The Tigers have shown interest in infielder Ha-Seong Kim, as related by the Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzold in a recent appearance on the Days Of Roar podcast.  The Blue Jays, Giants, and Kim’s former team the Padres have all been publicly connected to Kim this offseason, though it is fair to guess that San Francisco may be out of the running after signing Willy Adames.

As recently noted by Anthony Franco in a piece for MLBTR Front Office subscribers, Kim is one of the trickiest players to evaluate within the 2024-25 free agent class, owing to the shoulder surgery that Kim underwent in late September.  Kim will miss some time at the start of the 2025 season, though the exact timeline is up in the air — agent Scott Boras said a late-April return is possible, while Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller in October said Kim might not be ready until “May, June, July.”  It should be noted that Preller was speaking broadly on the topic rather than giving any sort of definitive timeline, yet even raising the possibility of a three-month range adds to the uncertainty over Kim’s health.

Some teams have still floated the idea of signing Kim to a multi-year contract, though the exact nature of such offers aren’t clear.  It would be risky to offer Kim something like four or five guaranteed years, but a two-year contract (likely with a player opt-out after 2025) seems entirely plausible.  Kim and agent Scott Boras might also seek out a flat one-year deal with the same idea of Kim getting to quickly re-enter the market next winter, ostensibly on the heels of a healthier and productive platform year.  MLBTR’s projection of a one-year, $12MM contract for Kim supports this strategy, though Boras is no stranger to creative deals that provide his clients with plenty of flexibility.

A shorter-term contract might have more appeal to the Tigers, who are reportedly seeking out such deals in regards to starting pitchers.  Now that Detroit is coming off a wild card berth and an ALDS appearance, the expectation has been that ownership and president of baseball operations Scott Harris will be somewhat more aggressive in upgrading on seems like a winning core, though the Tigers’ offseason has been pretty quiet to date, albeit with some rumors of interest in Jack Flaherty or Alex Bregman.

From a pure baseball perspective, a healthy Kim would be an ideal fit for the Tigers in many ways.  As Petzold notes, Kim’s speed and high-contact/low-strikeout approach greatly helps a Tigers team that finished near the bottom of the league in OBP and stolen bases, plus Kim’s right-handed bat adds balance to Detroit’s lefty-heavy lineup.  Kim is also a strong defensive player at multiple infield positions, so he could address the team’s needs at either third base or shortstop.

Javier Baez is still technically the incumbent starting shortstop, but his stock is at an all-time low after three increasingly poor seasons in Detroit and a hip surgery that ended his 2024 campaign in August.  Baez is still owed $73MM through the 2027 season, and since the Tigers would just be eating the money anyway in releasing him, the team might as well give Baez another chance at the start of the season to see if his surgery has perhaps corrected any of the health issues that led to his dropoff in production.

Trey Sweeney stepped into the shortstop role after Baez’s season ended prematurely, and Sweeney played well enough to put himself into the conversation for more regular playing time as well.  If the Tigers signed Kim, Detroit could just stick with Baez and Sweeney at shortstop until Kim is ready to play, and then evaluate whether Kim could just take over at shortstop, or perhaps play third base if Baez or Sweeney are having productive seasons.

Seems like Kim has a big market with a lot of suitors, with the way people are being paid so far I wouldn’t be surprised if the highest bidder had to basically pay him like he never got injured.

I still believe the Tigers ought to trade Baez straight up for Kris Bryant. Both are overpaid, but both for fit better on the other team. Bryant is owed more money, but he is also the better player, so it kind of equals out. Baez could fit at second base in place of Rodgers while Bryant could be a corner OF or 1B in case Torkelson doesn’t work.

Maybe I am biased, but it just makes too much sense to me. And it would be rather poetic since they are former Cubs teammates.

Yeah, but no trade clauses are made to be broken. Both those guys have egos. All you have to do is tell them both they will be starters on the new team or riding the bench on the old one.

I half believe Bryant is gonna retire. I think he cannot play anymore as that back gets worse and the Rockies will negotiate some long deferment schedule.

No both are bad contract swap candidates.

Money is about equal with Bryant earning a few mill more next 3 years.

Only issue is Bryant has 4 years compared to Baez 3, an extra year at 27 mill

So Rockies may have to kick in a prospect or 2 to unload that 27 mill or kick in cash.

If they can’t trade him, they’d be wise to eat the salary and dump him. He’s worth more off the roster than on it, as we see last season.

Why? Why on earth would the Rockies want to do this? Tovar is locked at SS and McMahon at 3. They have a young 2b who is close.

Baez always rocked Coors Field when he was in the NL. Amador (their fantastic 2B prospect) is I think 21. He can wait a year. Make the exchange, save a year (Baez has two left, Bryant 3), play Baez in 2025 then cut him.

I think the Rockies are starting to realize that Amador’s bat might take a little longer than expected to get to big league level. If it ever does. The guy stunk at AA. The only reason he made his debut was because Rodgers got hurt and he was the only guy on the 40 man to call up.

Neither Amador nor Ritter (the two most likely 2B guys) is ready for 2025. They have FAR more OF prospects who are ready for 2025. Moving Bryant would open a spot for Veen, Yanquiel, or Beck in the lineup moving forward.

Why would Rockies want to do this?

They get out of a contract a year earlier (3 years for Baez compared to 4 years for Bryant).

Pretty obvious the benefits for getting out a year earlier.

Plus you can probably just send Cole Carrigg and Ryan Ritter to Detroit instead of cash.

Literally no one wants Baez or Bryant so they either get released or wait out their contracts

Their only hopes at having a career after the tigers and Rockies are if they start hitting really good again

As a Tigers fan that largely remembers Bryant from his Chicago days it sounded good to me, until I looked up his numbers. He’s actually been a WORSE player than Baez, as hard as that is to do.

He’s not even hitting at a remotely average rate in the super hitter friendly Coors Field. -1 WAR in 2023 and -.7 in 2024, which was only not worse because he barely played. Meanwhile Baez had a WAR of .6 in 2023 and -1.1 in 2024.

Baez can at least still play defense, which Bryant has never been good at. This trade just doesn’t make any sense for the Tigers. Bryant is a negative value with 1 more year on his contract and more money per year. Baez’s contract is certainly negative value, but at the very least even without offensive improvement he has value as a defensive replacement / platoon starter / emergency full time starter since the money is a sunk cost. Bryant is not even looking like that quality of player anymore.

As long as Javy is around, signing Kim makes no sense. Regardless of the SBs, the Tigers took the extra base more than most teams. What they need is a solid hitter with power from the RH side. Kim isn’t the answer. Hays could be platooned in the OF with Vierling getting time at 3B, or Bregman would be the choice if dealing with Boras.

Javy is a “sunk cost.” The Tigers can pay him to lose them games on the field or pay him and have a better chance of winning without him. The cost will be the same either way, minus a few dollars if they can trade him.

I agree signing Kim makes no sense, but for different reasons. Signing a player to a one-year deal who doesn’t have a clear timetable for return doesn’t make much sense to me, nor does signing a player to a multi-year deal who has yet to prove he has returned to form after surgery. Plus, Kim seems to have a very similar profile to Hao-Yu Lee who could be MLB-ready very soon…. a RH who plays SS, 2B and 3B and is younger.

I kinda get that Javy impression too. But to the Tigers’ credit, Harris & Co. expect Baez to rehab to be ready by spring training-ish, then see how his repaired hip performs.

Also wonder if Baez and Harris & Co already know the surgery is not going to make much of a difference at this point. But from the Tigers’ perspective, why not pretend until then? They want out from under Baez’s deal, via Lloyds of London is an option. Holding him to rehabbing just puts it into his court to say “uncle.”

If Javy just wants to go home w/the $, he may be open to agreeing to sign off on a PUP-type deal.

The injury to his throwing arm is concerning. Both SS and 3B need strong arms. Tigers already have plenty of 2B and I would worry the Kim might project to 2B in the future. We could certainly use a 3B, a 1B and a better backup C, on shorter term deals. Kim is not really a solid solution for ‘25.

Looks to me that the Tigers will sign a SP or two, in the $12-15M range and not really address much else. We are still stuck waiting for draft prospects to develop with no real sense of urgency. At this point, I see a regression in the Win column as we wait on Clark; McGonigle; Rainer; Liranzo and Briceño.

If the look at his medicals and feel his arm will recover then a 3-4 year contract makes sense given his versatility and skillset. He’s a better version of McKinistry who can start or fill multiple positions. If they get him I think he should play SS or split with Sweeney and Jung at SS/3B if they dont go get a 3B as well. Baez needs to go. I like the idea someone noted above of shipping him out in a bad contract swap for Bryant, especially if Detroit moves on from Tork. Bryant could get at bats at 1B, OF and DH even if they kept Tork.

They’re just looking for a short term deal to bridge the gap between now and the debut of Hao-Yu Lee.

And I’m the only one who feels this way, but it’s too early to count out Ryan Kreidler. Now that he has a full offseason that he’s healthy and a little MLB experience under his belt, I anticipate he’s going to finally develop as expected. We will wait and see.

Kim looks like Tiger material. Career year at age 27, now looking like he’s in decline. Perfect, and also he won’t be cheap. What could make mores sense, and his size too ! If it was tied to a Skubal extension, then so be it, but if not then I hope they don’t sign him.

I know it’s hype week, but come on. The Tigers need not overpay for anyone. A one year flyer on anyone is okay, but they played well enough most days, so why rush into something now ? They are fun to watch as is. Go Tigers !

Kim can’t hit though. His OPS took a hit this past season. His value would’ve been perfect had he entered free agency after the 2023 season. Due to his shoulder injury, I feel like Boras can conjure up a similar contract like he did with Correa after the 2022 season, but nowhere near his AAV. I expect Boras to present an offer to Kim that looks something like a 3-year deal with opt-outs after each of the first two seasons. AAV should be somewhere around $12-15 million. Final number: $40.5 million over 3 years, opt-outs after 1st and 2nd seasons.

At a reasonable cost and length of contract Kim could be a good value.

Each teams medical staff can assess his injury, progress in healing, range of motion etc.

He hasn’t played 2B recently and not as much 3B but If he could play those positions as well as SS he could be a more valuable and productive player.

Not exclusively but smaller market teams may have the most interest while everyone waits till Juan Soto celebrates Christmas and New Years early when he picks a team.

Then, swap Baez for Bellinger in a “bad contract swap deal”.

Baez was a Cubs playoffs and World Series winning hero.
Baez may be a “change of scenery” player who can rebound and play better in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.

If not, he can pivot to coaching in Chicago.

Mark, you keep quoting the end of what Preller said in that call, but neglect to share the most pertinent information. Namely that Kim will not be able to begin throwing until after the regular season starts.

If Kim cannot start throwing until April, when will he be able to do a rehab assignment to get in game situations? He is not a good enough hitter that any team would put him in the DH slot until he was ready to go, so what is most likely for a return date?

Also, Boras quite shrewdly did not say that Kim would be ready to play in MLB games in late-April, just that he would be ready in late April. Ready to WHAT? To go on a rehab assignment to get in game situations? That is a likely best case outcome and of course Boras is going to present a best case outcome.
