Yankees Interested In Tim Hill

By Mark Polishuk | December 24, 2024 at 2:57pm CDT

Starters Max Fried and Carlos Rodon are the only left-handed pitchers on the Yankees’ 40-man roster, leaving the Bronx Bombers in clear need of some southpaw depth for the bullpen.  Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the team is considering a few left-handed relief options, including a possible reunion with Tim Hill.

After posting a 5.87 ERA in 23 innings with the White Sox, Hill was released by Chicago in June and quickly scooped up by the Yankees on a new contract.  The change of scenery worked wonders for Hill in terms of bottom-line results, as he posted a 2.05 ERA in 44 frames with New York during the regular season and then a tiny 1.08 ERA over 10 appearances and 8 1/3 innings in the playoffs.

Hill’s status as an extreme groundball pitcher can lead to such big swings in performance, as one often needs to look behind just the ERA to fully gauge the veteran lefty’s effectiveness.  Hill had an enormous .436 BABIP with the White Sox and then a .238 BABIP with the Yankees, perhaps explaining why the gap in SIERA (3.33 with New York, 4.04 with Chicago) isn’t quite as large as Hill’s ERAs would suggest.  The biggest change was improved control, as Hill had an 8.5% walk rate with the Sox and then only a 5.2% walk rate in the Bronx.

Now entering his age-35 season, Hill has a 3.99 ERA over 322 1/3 career innings across seven MLB seasons, with a 61.8% grounder rate helping overcome only a 17.3% career strikeout rate.  Those numbers naturally include a lot of success against left-handed batters, as Hill has held same-sided hitters to a .614 OPS (while right-handed hitters have a .788 OPS).  The home run ball has been an issue for Hill in the past, though he allowed just two homers over his 75 1/3 total frames in the regular season and postseason in 2024.

It was almost exactly a year ago that Hill signed a one-year, $1.8MM contract with the White Sox, on the heels of being non-tendered by the Padres.  His late-season success in the Yankees very likely means that Hill will land another guaranteed deal this winter, though his age and somewhat inconsistent track record will limit him to a one-year pact.  This limited price tag is surely a plus for a Yankees team already projected to be over the highest level of luxury tax penalization.  From Hill’s perspective, one would imagine he would also have interest in returning to the Yankees given his post-trade success, and getting another crack at winning a World Series ring.

Yanks are having trouble signing high quality bats and arms. Trading for and signing some guys in their way out doesn’t make much sense. Replacing perpetual slump bats like Rizzo & Gleybor & DJ with Belly & Goldy doesn’t make much sense. All their defense is on a tragic decline. I see no improvement just more of the same from the yanks. Only thing I thought was smart was driving up the price on Soto and dumping him on the Mets. A 2 tool player (arguable the best eye and hitter in the game though) for $700+ million lmao. Too bad they didn’t sign Tucker or Bregman or any real talent. Yankee fans must be scratching their heads.

        @17

Belly is an improvement over Verdugo. Goldy is an improvement over Rizzo. Both are an improvement with the bat and at least with Goldy, with the glove. Verdugo was a good glove but so is Belly in LF. And the difference in the OF is clear when you at its totality.

Judge is better in RF than Soto. Dominguez should be better or same as Judge in CF but moving Judge back to RF should hopefully save some wear and tear on his body. Belly vs Verdugo in LF is about even.

Goldy is better defensively than Rizzo. Jazz is good at 3b but better at 2b. Volpe at SS and Wells at C are both gold glove quality players. The only question is “how do they address 2b/3b”.

Btw Tucker wasn’t Abdullahi to buy. Bregman remains to be seen. If he becomes cheap then I can see them signing him but I don’t think they want to give up more draft picks because they’re already losing two by signing Fried. I would not be shocked if the Arenando trade happens with Stroman and a lower prospect happens.

@KnicksFanCavsFan The Yankees should be able to get Ke’Bryan Hayes from the Pirates for cheap for third. The Pirates are just looking to unload the former gold glover to free up some cash flow. Wouldn’t be a bad bounce back candidate for the Yankees.

Narrative never changed! Did Yanks want Soto absolutely and you listen to Ca$h he couldn’t believe Hal went above and beyond their comfort level trying to sign him. Proved a point that Cohen said he wasn’t gonna be out bid. Period! With Escalators 800 mill no frkn way! Never be worth that contract at all! So yeah drove price up and just happy he signed with Mets! We are better team without him overall!

Wait a minute…the guy who posted this is obviously not a Yankee fan….far from it…..and nobody on the Yankee side believes that going after Soto was a mistake…Hal just ran into a highly motivated owner in Cohen who wasn’t going to be out bid for Soto’s services…..no narrative has changed except in your own mind…..

Yes the yankees failed to sign Soto but to a true yankees fan and I think my thoughts mirror how true yankees fans feel about Soto. He is a great ball player and if we had him still we would continue to praise him yet know that our team isn’t perfect. We do have a great team and better than 85 % of the teams so we are in the mix. But contract wise he isn’t worth that kind of $. No one is..so let him go.and spread that around. Belli, goldy, williams fried and a few more to come for Soto, gleybar rizzo and nester. I’m ok with still better than 85% and we have a better deeper team imo. They just need to be healthy

You’re showing your lack of baseball knowledge 178iq. Yanks couldn’t “sign tucker” he wasn’t a free agent. And Bregman wants to get paid like a superstar. He’s had 2 superstar seasons and that was like 5 years ago.
If you think hes any better of a hitter than Bellinger then that’s a joke.
Oh and iqs don’t really mean that much btw.

Agree with you on pushing the price tag up on Soto. So glad Ca$hman and Hal said enough is enough. Now as far as bettering the Yanks i believe Ca$h has done that. We are a better team this year compared to last. Imo Anybody @1B is better than last yr. Our pitching staff is stronger top to bottom and we aren’t done yet. Also maybe adding another bat is coming as well. PG @ 1B is a 1 yr deal. Perfect! Also Bellinger in CF moving Judge back to RF helps our defense as well. Overall imo we are better!

Joe, I honestly don’t know. I can’t think of a viable option, and any one that I would like seems to be unrealistic. I mean, if the Cards are rebuilding, could Brandon Donovan be on the table? He seems like a great acquisition for the IF, but he’s going to cost a ton in trade capital.

Off the top of my head, perhaps Ha-Seong Kim or Hye-Seong Kim would be beneficial to add, absent any quality trade candidates?

Yankees clearly need a 2B/3B and have a long offseason to find a good one who could make the team better. If they won’t find one, it would be a big failure imo. Bringing back Gleyber would show their inability.

They should sign Jorge Polanco. He had a down year because of a nagging knee injury, and he was playing in pitcher-friendly Seattle. He had offseason surgery to fix his knee. You put his switch-hitting bat in Yankee Stadium, and he will have a nice bounce back season.

Obviously Jazz is going to play either 3rd or 2nd, and most probably the base he doesn’t play will be platooned with DJL (if he has anything left), Cabrera, and Perraza……of course Spring Training can bring surprises as to who might be available so this isn’t something that’s set in stone right now…..

I was suggesting Polanco for 3B, not 2B. He’s +1 for his career at 3B (granted a limited sample size). Most of his negative marks for his career are from when he played SS for the Twins.

Because of the analytics department. Like it or not, the Yankees coach doesn’t do that much coaching. Which is why the team performed so differently between 20023 and 2024. It was not just Soto but they changed the behind-the-scenes coaching staff, obviously for the better. But blaming Boone for the Cortes move is like the patient blaming the nurse rather than the doctor for the outcome of a surgery.

I expect a reunion soon. This early in off season you hope to do better than Hill. So don’t imagine a lot of interest. NY offers him something fair he would be smart to jump on it. Don’t see his price moving up even with limited supply so might as well sign soon as possible.

If you have any doubts Tim remember in the middle of the season when teams were desperate for pitching the Yankees were the only team interested in you. I wouldn’t make them pivot elsewhere. They offer you a mlb deal take it!
