Angels, Tim Anderson Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | January 22, 2025 at 11:46am CDT

The Angels and former All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson are in agreement on a minor league contract, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today. He’ll be in camp with the Halos as a non-roster invitee this spring.

Anderson, still just 31 years old, experienced a precipitous decline at the plate in 2023. After posting an outstanding .318/.347/.473 batting line in the four prior seasons, the former AL batting champ, two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner posted an anemic .245/.286/.296 in a lost season with the the White Sox. That prompted the South Siders to decline what at one point looked to be a no-brainer $14MM club option for the 2024 season.

Anderson signed a one-year, $5MM deal with the Marlins last winter, landing himself a starting job in hopes of a rebound campaign. Instead, his offense declined even further. In 65 games and 241 plate appearances with Miami, Anderson mustered only a .214/.237/.226 batting line while striking out in a career-worst 28.2% of his turns at the plate. Overall, he’s taken 765 plate appearances since Opening Day 2023 and connected on just one homer with a composite .235/.271/.274 output.

Given the suddenness and magnitude of Anderson’s surprising decline, it’s natural that he’s limited to a minor league deal this winter. He was widely considered a bat-first shortstop in his final seasons with the White Sox anyhow, and his decline in the box now mirrors the decline in the field he’d experienced from 2020-23.

With the Angels, Anderson isn’t likely to unseat 24-year-old Zach Neto — the Angels’ quietly emerging everyday shortstop. Neto, the No. 13 overall pick in 2022, has quality defensive tools and turned in a .249/.318/.443 batting line with 23 homers and 30 steals last year during his first full big league season. His breakout didn’t garner as much attention as it deserved, presumably due to a slow start and the Angels’ standing as one of the game’s worst teams last year. However, Neto could miss time early in the year following November shoulder surgery, which could give Anderson an opportunity to win a job in camp.

Elsewhere in the infield, there could be other opportunity. Anthony Rendon has been injured more than he’s been healthy since signing with the Angels. If he heads back to the IL, second baseman Luis Rengifo could slide over to third base and open a spot for Anderson — if he earns that type of consideration with a decent spring training. Anderson himself could also get a look at third base. Kevin Newman and Scott Kingery are both on hand as utility options on the bench, though Kingery has minor league options remaining.

Anderson might face long odds of getting back to the majors and securing an everyday role in Anaheim, but there’s no risk in the Halos bringing him to camp to see if they can catch a glimpse of his prior All-Star form. If Anderson can indeed bounce back, he’ll be a bargain contributor on a team hoping to reverse course and get back into contention after yet another finish well below .500. If he can rebound and the team struggles as it’s tended to do in recent years, Anderson could be a summer trade chip. And, if he simply continues to look overmatched this spring, the Angels can cut him loose and won’t owe him anything.

I never understood the vitriol he received for saying he wanted to be like Jackie Robinson. Is it really that unbelievable and offensive to people that a young black man playing baseball would idolize the guy who broke the color barrier? Obviously his on-field perfoemance didn’t live up to the comparison, but it felt like such a weird thing to attack him over.

he didnt say he wanted to be like jackie robinson he said he felt like a modern day jackie robinson.

he was suspended for using the n word towards a white teammate in a locker room fight and declined to challenge the suspension because he didnt believe mlb would send in any black executives to take his side.

“”I’m bringing something to baseball that’s never been brought, as far as the swag,” he said. “I love fashion, and just being different, and bringing black culture to baseball and doing it in a different way, because today’s game is boring. … [After the bat flip,] a lot of people who don’t watch baseball, they actually gave me feedback, like, ‘Man, if this is going on in baseball, I better watch it.'”

was jackie robinson a fashion icon? is this insulting to his legacy?

I couldn’t care less, but the optics were awful. If you want to compare yourself to someone like Jackie Robinson, you need some serious accomplishments.

And this isn’t his only bad publicity.

Why does everything have to involve race? So divisive. We need the color blind society where people are rewarded based upon merit that the country deserves. Hopefully we will finally realize it with this new administration and all the positive hope and feelings it has ushered in already.

I don’t care who you voted for – you have to be smart enough to know that roughly half the country disagrees with you and half agrees.

Accordingly, your post is the very definition of divisive.

Much easier to simply say “Tim Anderson sucked as a hitter last year.” Tim has one homer in 745 at bats during 2023 and 2024. Over those two seasons his WAR was -3.5.

Except Donaldson is also from Alabama and said it in a mocking good Ole boy fashion. It’s like calling someone one of your boys. Or calling him boy if you’re from the South. Context matters. Yas Grandal who spent his formative years in Florida and went to the U, instantly knew what was up and had TA’s back. He was the one who instantly charged Donaldson.

Especially considering the declining numbers of African Americans in the game. He didn’t boast he was Jackie. It was extracted from him in the course of a long form interview. I recall the reporter posed the issue, asking him to comment on Jackie’s legacy.

All the bs aside, I always liked TA with the Sox, he was a guy who could hit the ball consistently, was putting up better numbers every season, improvement from year to year offensively and defensively. Knock was that he didn’t have a good glove but it was coming around and his bat made up for it. Started developing a little power too. To consistently hit .300+ is noticeable and for a few seasons, TA was putting up those numbers. I don’t know how it works out for him, he isn’t replacing Rengifo or Neto up the middle, but he’s a good option off the bench.

Donaldson called him Jackie and he SAID THAT WAS RACIST, which is what I thought the comment was referring to.

I understand now that this joke is referring to Anderson calling HIMSELF Jackie, and I admitted I was wrong and liked both the original joke and the comment that corrected it.

I didn’t go out and accuse it of being rscist, I asked if there was some thing I was missing, which I found out there was.

That injury was a major misstep, a deeply unfortunate and gruesome outcome while trying to make a play while in a rundown, that felled him at his peak, when he was coming off the highs of the Field of Dreams game and then a stellar performance in the World Baseball classic. This game has a way of humbling you. Hoping he makes it back and helps out the Angels.

still though counting the infielders its newman, rengifo, schanuel, rendon, kingery and neto. they have paris and lugo in the minors, but with zach’s surgery there might be a spot to fight for come opening day. Moore and TA look like they get the first cracks, thats why he signed.

Joswa lugo, 17 year old SS that is probably not ready for the MLB yet. Mathew Lugo is a 23-year-old OF that they got from Boston at the trade deadline and most likely would have been promoted last year if he had not got hurt.

Anderson will be fighting with Kingery for a bench spot behind Newman if Neto starts the season on the IL. If Neto is able to play on opening day, Anderson is headed to Salt Lake.

      I’ll counter that take:

Tim got backlash for comparing himself to Jackie Robinson because Jackie is so beloved by baseball fans. We respect and appreciate Jackie’s plight, character, and accomplishments on and off the field so much that we consider his name to be hallowed ground.

A group that loves and respects Jackie is definitely not racist.

It wasn’t that soft a shot. The issue was too much dancing. It was a lot like when Joey Bats had the hard slide on Odor. While Joey was showing off his form, Odor was throwing punches.

But both punches were short and crisp.

The guy doesn’t know how to take a pitch. His walk rate is atrocious, and he strikes out too much. Those things rarely get better when you are on the other side of age 30. Also, Anderson is from Alabama. Donaldson is from Florida.

No coincidence, Tim Anderson’s career went downhill right after ignoring Roger Beshen’s advice regarding throwing a new pitch AKA the football slider. Roger Beshens tried to warn Tim Anderson multiple times but being as stubborn as he is, he refused to listen. He ended up taking a football slider to the face instead

What exactly happened to him? He’s not exactly the first player to see their baseball playing abilities completely disappear at what would normally be the beginning or middle of the peak of most players’ careers.

Doesn’t sound like injury and yes, he expressed some embarrrasing and ironic hubris, but that in and of itself wouldn’t cause his playing ability to simply evaporate seemingly overnight.

    Actual theories?

Personally I don’t think the fall is physical with Anderson. It’s between the ears. Wash was a part of the team that honed in Josh Hamilton. Tim could benefit from that experience.

With the veterans they signed earlier this off season, if he gets out of line, I am sure he will dealt with quickly.

If Neto can’t play opening day, Anderson is the best temporary option they have right now. If Anderson somehow recaptures his playing ability, he’d be a great trade chip for some pitching help.

Its a minor league deal with an NRI, but its still disturbing. Anderson is one of those guys that you don’t want anywhere near your clubhouse and hope to God he never makes it on the roster.

How bad is he? Last season Kevin Newman was nearly 4 WAR better. Not because Newman was so good, but because Anderson was so bad. A -1.5 WAR. I don’t even want to see a guy like that in Salt Lake. Just clogging up the roster. Hopefully he opts out when he doesn’t make the 26 man roster. .
