Dodgers Sign Roki Sasaki

By Anthony Franco and Darragh McDonald | January 22, 2025 at 11:05am CDT

Jan. 22: The Dodgers have formally announced Sasaki’s signing. Baseball America, unsurprisingly, ranked Sasaki as the new No. 1 prospect in baseball this morning.

Jan. 17: The Dodgers have landed another star out of Japan. Roki Sasaki announced on Friday evening that he’s signing with Los Angeles. The Wasserman client will reportedly receive a $6.5MM signing bonus. The Dodgers have not officially announced the deal, which can be finalized at any point until the evening of January 23.

As an international amateur, Sasaki is limited to a minor league contract with a hard-capped signing bonus. He won’t immediately occupy a 40-man roster spot, though the team will certainly select him onto the MLB roster by Opening Day. In the end, it’s a fairly unsurprising result, though other outcomes seemed somewhat possible at times. The Dodgers have long been seen as the most logical landing spot for Sasaki, and though the Padres and Blue Jays tried to make surprising runs, the most likely outcome has now come to pass.

Sasaki’s free agency has been hotly anticipated for some time. He made his debut in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball in 2021 at the young age of 19 and went on to post outstanding results over the past few years. Thanks to triple-digit velocity on his fastball and a deadly splitter, he has managed to post a 2.10 earned run average in 394 2/3 innings over the past four years. He struck out 32.7% of batters faced and limited walks to a 5.7% clip.

That performance would have made him one of the top free agents of this or any offseason, which normally would have lined him up for a massive payday. However, Sasaki seemed determined to start his major league career as soon as possible, without much regard for money.

If he had waited until he turned 25, he would have been considered a professional under MLB rules, and thus able to sign for any amount the market would bear. That was the route taken by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who secured a $325MM guarantee from the Dodgers last offseason.

But Sasaki is making the move now, having just turned 23 years old, meaning he is considered an amateur and thus subject to MLB’s international bonus pool system. Under that system, each team gets a set amount to spend on international amateurs annually. This year, each team gets between $5-8MM, a paltry amount compared to what Yamamoto secured. That at least made it theoretically possible that any club could sign him, since the big-spending clubs couldn’t outmuscle the smaller clubs like with many other free agents.

However, despite that theoretical even playing field, there were still many good reasons to expect the Dodgers to emerge victorious. Sasaki and his agent Joel Wolfe didn’t reveal much about the player’s preferences, but logically, the Dodgers are an attractive landing spot. They play on the West Coast, which is often appealing for players coming over from Asia simply due to the relative proximity. They have a strong track record of on-field success, having made the playoffs in each year going back to 2013 now and having just won the World Series a few months ago. They also roster a couple of other Japanese stars in Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani.

It wasn’t known how much Sasaki would weigh those factors compared to others. Wolfe pushed back on the notion that Sasaki cared about the presence of other Japanese players. He also suggested last month that Sasaki might prefer a smaller market, on account of some friction with the media during his time in Japan.

There were some arguments to possibly consider scenarios where he would prefer to go elsewhere. The Padres could have offered a smaller market than the Dodgers and it was reported that Sasaki has a strong relationship with current Padre Yu Darvish. The Blue Jays are owned by Rogers Communications, the club’s primary broadcaster, potentially giving them the ability to lower Sasaki’s access to the media. The fact that they are the only MLB team in Canada also theoretically opened up more endorsement opportunities from Japanese companies, as opposed to sharing the L.A. market with Ohtani and Yamamoto. The Jays also had a larger international bonus pool than the Dodgers and added to it by acquiring more pool space from the Guardians in a trade earlier today.

But despite any short-term drama that played out this offseason, the most obvious thing has happened. Sasaki has joined a team that is already loaded with stars like Ohtani, Yamamoto, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. 2005 was the last time the Dodgers won fewer than 80 games and now they are adding another hugely talented player into the mix.

Adding Sasaki’s talent is a huge boost to the roster but it’s also massive from a financial point of view. As an amateur, Sasaki will only be able to make the league minimum this year and until he qualifies for arbitration or signs an extension. That’s a massive thing for a club like the Dodgers, who already owe big sums of money to their aforementioned stars as well as Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Teoscar Hernández and plenty of others.

It also gives them an embarrassment of riches in the rotation, at least in terms of pure talent. Their rotation mix now includes Sasaki, Ohtani, Yamamoto, Glasnow, Snell, Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May. It’s a near inevitability that Clayton Kershaw will eventually re-sign. Even with each of Gavin Stone, Emmet Sheehan, Kyle Hurt and River Ryan set to miss most or all of next season, the Dodgers’ rotation should run eight or nine names deep. Landon Knack, Justin Wrobleski, Nick Frasso and formerly touted rookie Bobby Miller are all on hand as depth starters.

It’s a staggering amount of talent for one team. The Dodgers won the World Series last year in spite of their playoff rotation. This year, the rotation should be a strength going into October. That’s despite the injury risk associated with essentially everyone in the group. Glasnow has never surpassed 134 MLB innings in a season. Yamamoto was limited to 18 starts in his first MLB season by a rotator cuff strain. Snell has only topped 130 frames twice. Kershaw, Gonsolin and May all missed most or all of last season recovering from major surgeries. Ohtani underwent elbow surgery late in 2023 and didn’t pitch last year.

Sasaki comes with plenty of durability questions in his own right. He averaged fewer than 100 innings per season over his four years in NPB. He never reached 130 innings and was limited to 111 frames across 18 appearances a year ago. Sasaki had a pair of injuries in 2024: an oblique tear and shoulder fatigue.

The Dodgers will happily take the tradeoff of some IL stints for rate dominance. Los Angeles doesn’t place much value on bulk innings. They’re content to embrace injury risk as they chase pitchers with top-of-the-rotation upside. That’s enabled in part by their resources, of course, though money isn’t a factor for Sasaki.

Every team would have been thrilled to sign Sasaki for $6.5MM. The Dodgers will also owe a $1.3MM posting fee to the pitcher’s NPB team, the Chiba Lotte Marines. The posting fee is proportional to the size of the player’s signing bonus. As Sasaki’s bonus was capped at a few million dollars, the Marines were limited to 20% of whatever he received.

It comes out to a $7.8MM investment to land Japan’s most talented pitcher. The Dodgers have signed arguably NPB’s best pitcher in consecutive offseasons. They’ll have Sasaki for the standard six-year window of team control associated with the promotion of any prospect. He’ll be slated for salaries around the league minimum for the next three seasons. He’d then go through three years of the arbitration process. MLB rules prohibit the Dodgers and Sasaki from reaching any kind of understanding regarding a contract extension to circumvent the bonus pool limits. While there’s no official cutoff for when the Dodgers could look to extend Sasaki, they cannot have any sort of unofficial long-term deal in the works right now.

The Dodgers opened this signing period tied with the Giants for the lowest bonus pool. They had $5.1462MM to spend on international amateurs on January 15. The Dodgers allowed a few of their verbal agreements with teenage prospects to lapse to keep open funds for Sasaki. They added to their pool by dealing minor league outfielder Dylan Campbell to the Phillies and sending outfield prospect Arnaldo Lantigua to Cincinnati tonight. Their precise bonus allotment isn’t known, but Sasaki will take the vast majority of the pool. That’s a trade every team would happily make for a potential plug-and-play ace.

It’s a brutal blow for fans of the other two finalists. The Padres found out this morning that they were out of the mix. They have multiple holes in their rotation and now face an even tougher challenge in the NL West. The Blue Jays finish as the runner-up on yet another marquee free agent talent. Toronto has lost out on Ohtani, Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes and Sasaki (among others) within the past two offseasons alone.

Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times first reported the signing bonus. Image courtesy of USA Today Sports.

UGH, he does NOT get “…the largest pile of $”. In fact he’d have made more money with the Blue Jays and possibly the Padres.

He chose the Dodgers for other reasons. Most of which he will probably never say.

It’s just because you are thinking about that miniscule signing bonus. Roki isn’t concerned about the signing bonus. If he was the Dodgers would have never been a consideration. Pirates Royals teams that get the largest available signing $ would have been his list. He’s going to make much more $ in LA.

Playoff $. Endorsements. Ability to hand out a future mega contract. > Than international signing bonus.

Will make much more $ with Dodgers.

LA has a complete team. SD doesn’t have nine ML’s to put in the field right now. No catcher and 1/2 a credible starting staff that is about to shrink. LF by committee. Tryouts start next week. A singles hitter as a DH. That is why SD was eliminated. For the life of me , Sasaki pursuit aside, what the hell is Preller waiting for? Did he actually think that his roster would have the best amateur in the world salivating.

It’s hard not to hate the Dodgers because baseball is most fun when it’s competitive. But when a team can consistently buy their talent (rather than develop them), it takes a lot of joy out of the game.

I don’t think It’s so much about another team not getting Sasaki as it is building a team with dollars rather than developing it.

No team has the Dodgers pockets and it’s getting kind of obscene. Dodger fans are thrilled at the gluttony but by now it’s a bad look.

It’s not a minuscule amount. It’s six million dollars.

Essentially the Blue Hays and Padres have had to fire go this year’s international pool waiting for him – although apparently one of them tried to hijack the Giants’ pick.

I dunno, maybe because his chances of a World Series ring are substantially higher with a better team and management staff? I’m about done with the Jays at this point. If they don’t get at least Santander and trade for decent pitching, then they might as well just fold, sell off Guerrero and Bo and rebuild until they can get a decent managerial staff in place who know what they’re doing. They don’t deserve to be in the MLB if they can’t compete with major market teams. They have the resources.

@yourdream. I was half right. Said the acquiring would get additional bonus money. Figured it would be around 8, and the jays hit that number for no reason. I’m sure that was the benchmark, and he used his freedom. This whole thing was a guessing game, and I was following the few crumbs besides kim suddenly becoming Japanese and the Japanese dodgers did it again( currently only 3 Japanese players) or the collusion narrative ( he’s a free agent), and yes a cheap one. Dodgers won, and got a very good player.

What is just stupid is how he’s now listed as the number one prospect in baseball. MLB needs to restrict rookies (prospects) to those that have not played at the highest level in their league. While I understand there are differences between countries, it’s not fair to the true rookie given the prestige and monetary benefits at stake. Ichiro was amazing but who believes he was a rookie when he first came to the U.S.?

Atkins and Shapiro must have been tailgating at a Leafs game when they came up with that trade. If they are lucky the cup will finally return to Toronto in a few months, then nobody in the GTA will give a damn about the Jays this year.

Signing $ is great to have. Jays fans say their front office is idiots but you don’t have to be a genius to know Roki was signing with LA. $ is probably to go after players who will no longer be signing with the Dodgers. And other players will become available throughout the year.

Padres ownership created this mess with the perception that it wasn’t committed to winning.

      Sure, it was Roki’s choice.

When a player doesn’t feel the ownership’s investing with the intent to win, it doesnt instill a confidence in that organization.

The Seidler Bros have let San Diego down.

The right thing for THEIR POCKETBOOK.

Team has spent ZERO on incoming talent this offseason.

Team has made ZERO attempts at signing any free agents.

Ownership has prevented Preller from making moves.

Fans clamored for Machado and he was apart of the core that won 93 games last year.

Fans clamored for the team to spend more and as it has they have made more playoff appearances in recent history.

Yes, teams should list to fans.

Thats – Teams listen to their accountants. As long as fans are dumb enough to put money in the pockets of owners who don’t give a crap about winning, then owners are happy.

Very few owners care about winning, I commend those that do.

Don’t worry about what the team is spending. Spending doesn’t equal winning. That’s not debatable. Just focus on being a fan. Cheer when they tell you to cheer you don’t have the intelligence to do anything other than that

ThatsIt – spending = winning. Teams that want to win spend their money like any investment, opportunity vs risk. And they would all love a Crystal ball. It’s easy to look backwards and criticize, but Cease has a negative WAR the same year they signed Xander. Their decisions just don’t pan out well.

Unless the books were legitimately opened for fans to see, it’s pure speculation as to what the Padres have to spend.

Now having to spend and wanting to spend are two different things.

Not that any of this needed to happen. @avenger – In fairness, they already had that rule when he was with the Angels. It is grossly unfair with the limits that they have on two way play.

          1) He doesn’t count as a pitcher in terms of pitcher roster limit
          2) He doesn’t have to leave game as DH, but other DH’s can’t take the field or the team loses the DH spot. Really should allow all teams to move a DH to the field.
          3) Guys can’t pitch unless it’s a 10 run game and late in the game, so can’t gain eligibility so easily.

I’m a lifelong Yankees fan but even I pulled for the Sox in the WS after their crushing but historic comeback over us. May be because they deserved to win it all after that. May be I’m just a real baseball fan that loves the game and its magical moments. Hating on the Yanks, Dodgers (for getting talent to win) or any other franchise is ridiculous, and a waste of energy, in my opinion. Even tho I was personally hoping he’d go to the Padres with Darvish so he’d shine yet still be outside the bright lights. But keep on being miserable and angry. Agreed. Like many on here I adore baseball. Greatest sport there is. But like you said, there are many more things in life to be passionate about. Far too great a game to view it negatively.

“It was crazy how much better they were than Yankees in WS”

A competent manager brings in Tim Hill and not Nestor Cortes in Game 1. Yanks were ahead with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th. Winnable game. If Judge doesn’t drop the fly ball in Game 5, followed by the weird FC, Dodgers don’t score three runs that inning. Winnable game.

Yanks shot themselves in the foot in two games there (one managerial, one comedy of errors). Dodgers run differential in the series was only +1. This was a close series with the only blowout being by the Yankees. Dodgers weren’t “crazy” better than the Yanks, just better.

The manager is part of the team. If Boone isn’t competent, then he’s partly why the Dodgers were so much better.

@rct – yes, that is what teams who “are not as good” do. They shoot themselves in the foot. The Dodgers had no pitching and beat the Yankees in five. This year the script may be flipped.

roberts punted game 4 and let a demoralized team off the deck. he’s lucky the yankees forgot how to play baseball for an inning because allowing the momentum to flip could have been a legendary screw up (i.e. falcons take their foot off the gas against the patriots)

What is the run differential without the game that the Dodgers punted from the start?

And if the Yankees were close to the Dodgers in October (with three starters) and still got smoked in 5, how do they stack up after this offseason?

If thar is the case then Ohtani ruined baseball by signing with the Dodgers. LA couldn’t get past the first round in the playoffs before signing him so it was JUST because of him. But seriously it does seem strange that the previous 2 the top teams (other than the Astros) kept losing early in the playoffs. Now in 2024 only one top team the Phillies failed to advance(somehow Ohtani magic worked against them?).

Wrote it before, writing it again……

The disparity of payrolls as well as the marketing advantages (i.e. juicy pub and subsequent endorsement advantages of players signing with large market teams) has made competitiveness in MLB a total joke.

I follow the sport because I love to see teams that play strong fundamental baseball, put together by smart front offices, quality coaching staffs, and smart mangers. Living in the mid-west I particularly enjoy following and watching the Brewers, Rays, Guardians, and Orioles on MLB/TV. The Phillies are the only medium/large market team I was following, but they’ve gradually stopped playing with a desire to do what it takes to win the past 2 years. This year I have hopes for the Reds with Francona managing those players. Realistically, my season ends on the last day of the regular season. Once the playoffs start the high-revenue teams have bought players not only during the offseason, but in one-sided salary-dump trades right up to the deadline to offset their players injuries and/or poor seasons. The next offseason the large market team raise salaries for the sexy FA’s, assuring that most teams will be fortunate to sign 10-20% of their quality players as they approach their 6 years of control.
        –
People in this country are waking up to a lot of nonsense. MLB being a competitive sport is a part of that. Lots of fans are like me. They know that a great season for them is to get into the playoffs and maybe win a round. But usually the top 6 or so high revenue teams can make the playoffs and have a chance at the WS. Fans of the other 24 teams switch over to watch their NFL and NBA teams, which compete on an equal footing. The days of all sports fans in America watching the World Series are long since gone.

Every few years a team like the D-Backs emerges so fans in 24 cities that know better are supposed to think lightning will strike them. Most know better.
        –
The first day I read about Roki Sasaki here I figured he’d sign with the Dodgers. Have seen dozens of articles on where he might sign. Noted the number of comments, but never read a one.

Anyone with a modicum of common sense knows the deck was marked.

          Same with
          Chris Taylor
          Justin Turner

Or any veteran. Dodgers didn’t develop them. They made changes based on analytics to their hitting approach. Not even close to the same
          Thing as developing a player.

Point is the Dodgers develop plenty of their own players some of which eventually leave and join other teams. I don’t see you blasting other teams for “buying up” ex dodgers. The common denominator is winning and jealous fans.

But you can understand that fans have had about enough of the Dodgers buying everyone, and Sasaki is now a Dodger.

Hard to hate Mookie or Freddie, but they’re part of an obscene wealth that no other team can match, which is destroying competition.

It’s sad, but I see people wanting Sasaki, Snell, Yamamoto, Ohtani, and other Dodgers to blow out their arms or have major injuries. That has to tell you that—even if you don’t agree—you can understand why fans from other cities don’t feel that the playing field is balanced and competitive. That can’t be good for MLB.

So what are you proving and what are you overcoming to win? How valuable can those wins be to you personally? From a fans perspective, the Dodgers could win the next ten World Series and I wouldn’t view them as a Dynasty. They’ve become the Harlem Globetrotters. As an aside, with the recent rule and CBA changes, it appears MLB is turning into the NBA. God help us all.

Most people would say 2 of the last 5, but you do you. Crying is too strong, I’m disappointed and close to being indifferent.

Something is very wrong when following and attending games for a minor league team is a more enjoyable experience than anything to do with MLB.

I agree there is most definitely something wrong with baseball for you if you can’t enjoy your favorite team… I would suggest worrying less about what the Dodgers are doing and simply enjoying your team.

You keep implying that I have some particular resentment towards the Dodgers. This is not about the Dodgers, this is about MLB and the direction it’s heading in. It’s eerily similar to the NBA. “Super teams” are built, profits hit all-time highs, regular season becomes meaningless, fans for most markets become disinterested, ratings go down, league creates circus regular season events to try to get fans back, popularity plummets.

IDK disappointed people don’t go on message boards to rant about the state of the league over one team signing a 23 year old player.

I mean honestly the expanded playoffs has done more for mid tier teams than anything as evidenced by the Dodgers getting bounced in 22′ and 23′

And two, you don’t want all future players coming over from Japan to be viewed by teams as “Don’t bother, he’s going to LA”.

There’s a lot that goes into this comparison but it makes sense to compare Cost of Living in Toronto to LA. Income, property, sales taxes etc plus the cost of goods and services. However, if that was a driver to the decision process, the Marlins and Rays would have been considered with the Astros and Rangers. Only the Rangers were apparently considered. Would have been funny if he signed with the Marlins. Everyone’s heads would explode.

Most Canadian players don’t turn their backs on their roots and the family and friends they left behind while playing. Same with Japanese, Dominican etc. They are all very proud of their home country.

You don’t root for injuries. But to root against someone’s success, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s not like he doesn’t have generational wealth already from endorsements in Japan.

I don’t know what the unwritten rules are but neither MLB nor NPB want teams to circumvent posting fees. I’d say Roki will need to pitch at least three years at league min and one arb year before a team will even begin to discuss extensions. Japan does not want to lose its star players AND money and MLB does not want to lose that pipeline.

he couldn’t get any more than the minimum, that is how the posting works. he maxed out the bonus which couldn’t be any higher than 10mm (if he went with a team with no limit that traded something like 6 players to pay him) the highest the dodgers could have paid him was something like a 7mm bonus

Aloha Bradduh, what a sad day for baseball. As much as I wanted Sasaki-san to be a Cub years ago when he wasn’t on many folks radar in the states, I really think restricted players out of Nihon, Japan need to be included in our domestic draft as the NPB and MLB are two leagues with a long history of “organized professional baseball.”

Sadly Manfred is a weak commissioner and I don’t think we’ll see any meaningful changes til he departs. The positive thing, anecdotal now, many of my “relatives,” Japanese here and in the states are turned off by one MLB team getting the top players from Nihon. The NPB wouldn’t allow LA to get away with what it has the past 2 years.

A lot of regular baseball fans told me they are done with the MLB if Roki-san goes to LA. As much as I’m disappointed in his decision, I’m more upset with the MLB and the current commissioner.

Well, I was looking forward to seeing your team come up against the Giants with a rotation of Yu & Roki-san, Cease, King etc. I’m not going to anymore LA games when they come here.

Thankfully there is still little league, highschool college and minor league baseball! I wish your Padres the best, I’d love for them to win the division. Anyhow, in 2 months my Cubs go to Tokyo to play against LA in the Done. I pray my Cubs take at least 1 game! Mahalo Nui!

I have to begrudgingly agree it makes sense for Sasaki. We don’t have any insight into his thought process, but it’s a well-run organization; he’ll get to play alongside Yamamoto and Ohtani; and he’ll have the chance to be on a top-end contender right away.

I don’t like the signing as a Padres fan, obviously, but it’s understandable why he would want to go to L.A.

Comfort is very important for any player, but especially for a young player making the move from Japan to the US.

Roki will be surrounded by fellow countrymen in the clubhouse, stands, and around the city. That will no doubt make his experience in MLB much more comfortable, and therefore much more enjoyable.

Put yourself in their shoes. If you are a good Japanese player, would you make the move to MLB knowing you’d be drafted by a team like the Oakland Athletics, Pirates, Rays, Rockies, Marlins, ChiSox, etc?

With a draft, far fewer Japanese players would come to MLB. That is a fact, and MLB knows it.

Yep, its why I stopped watching.

NBA is about to shut down dynasties for good with their new CBA kicking in. NFL is all about parody.

MLB is a joke that is almost unwatchable any longer. I used to be a die hard MLB guy, now I barely watch.

Sasaki obviously is not the reason why, but this signing was orchestrated by his agent and the Dodgers. So he gave up a larger pay day to go out early? Why? To go to whatever team he wants…NBA would never allow Wemby to just pick the Lakers. Or The NFL would not allow Travis Hunter to just go to the Chiefs..

I am reminded of what Michael Jordan said when he was asked if he wanted to play with Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing during his career.

He said no, he wanted to kick their ass. I guess Sasaki does not have the competitiveness.

The next CBA is going to be extraordinarily ugly I think. The inequity amongst teams is going to cause a major rift within the league on both sides if they don’t rein in these absurd manipulations by L.A. in particular. Small market teams have to jump through ridiculous international rules while selling off assets they claim to not be able to afford. The books are all going to come out in a couple years and this nonsense is going to end up in some sort of market cap much harder than this ridiculous tiered tax system that clearly doesn’t work.

That’s just it though… BOTH players and owners are getting filthy rich so they don’t care. The only issue I can see truly being amended is how deferred contracts are calculated, or the manner in which they’re applied by teams.

I think you’re right. The only way I see owners getting up in arms is if every free agent superstar position player starts to command Soto/Ohtani money, which I don’t see as realistic.

If owners are getting paid, they’ll be content with the system.

Yankee – I was thinking about a change to the CBA to change the luxury tax hit for deferrals, which I think is what you’re talking about.

But why would teams or players agree to it? A change would make it less appealing for teams, which means they’d probably offer them less to players so players would in turn make less money.

Joemo: Yeah, I mean your point is perfectly valid. The only reason that comes to mind is that no team has used it like the Dodgers have since this season, so I’m not sure anyone expected it to be used this way. It really depends on how all the other owners view this.

But, to your point, I could easily see how none of this would change because teams are making tons of money, and care about that more than anything else.

@Clip Good to see you! I’m sure plenty of other owners would love to do it but it’s more of a cashflow issue. Ohtani’s annnual $44M deferment needs to go into escrow every season. Guggenheim Group can borrow that in one phone call. Same for Steve Cohen from one of his hedge funds.

In theory sure Dodgers can spend more on payroll now. But what happens in 2035-45 when the Dodgers have 68M on the payroll? Along with their other deferred money. They may have 100M on the books for retired players. Don’t think the Dodgers plan on being a powerhouse then…

@billy09 I see your point and it’s possible that the Dodgers can run into a cash crunch by then. However, if the owners have their backs against the wall, the ownership group can always sell their shares of the team to raise money.

In deferred contracts there are often contractual provisions to assure the money is being put aside. The teams have no problem with that because the money is actually gaining as it sits there going towards the end deferrals. The total out of pocket when the team eventually begins to pay will end up not being the total they had to pay because it would have gained value as it gained interest. That gain will also increase through the years. Also, the percentage towards the cap will be far less because the cap will be more than 60 million higher at minimum, probably more.

        This

I don’t see any big changes coming in the next CBA. Notice that the A’s are being forced to spend by the the Players Union’s threat of a law suit, not the other owners. Big market clubs love d-bags like John Fisher, Bob Nutting, etc. They don’t offer any competition, don’t drive up contract prices because they won’t spend, and basically serve as farm systems for the big spenders. They do the work of drafting and developing the players to get them ready for their inevitable paydays in NY/LA. In turn, Fisher/Nutting etc.pocket the revenue-sharing/CBT dollars. Whatever crappy product they roll out there every season is fine, and they can’t be shamed them into doing anything different because they don’t care. Threaten them with empty stadiums and loss of public tax dollars, and they threaten to move as soon as their stadium deals are up.

Players union is never accepting a salary cap unless the floor is high enough to offset the ceiling. Someone smarter than me could probably figure out the math, but I bet it’d be well over $150 million. There are enough a-hole, greedy owners that wouldn’t allow one dime to be taken out of their pockets that the idea would likely never make it past a vote. It’s a perfect system for everyone-except for the fans.

Wembeyana had to go through the draft and had no choice in where he went and he had no way of circumventing the draft. He went to the Spurs bc the Spurs were one of the worst teams in the NBA.

NFL is all about parody and teams that suck can get franchise players via the draft.

There is statistically and realistically less parity in both of those leagues, imo, as is evidenced by the n teams that make the championship game and win it. NFL and NBA have the same winners far more often than does MlB.

BUT, you also have to consider the number of teams in MlB that spend at or below the absolute minimum amount, while the NBA and NfL teams spend more across the league. It’s a notable and drastic difference that makes MlB far more competitive than the other two.

Up until a famous controversial moment in NBA history the Lakers were involved in HALF OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES EVER PLAYED during their existence. This was not the greatest stroke of luck ever, nor was it a plucky front office. I will leave it there, but there sure seems to be a lot more parity these days. =)

Again, I DID NOT write that the Lakers made the playoffs half the time. The Championship.

Every single team gets over $200M in revenue sharing. Take a guess which teams are providing the bulk of that revenue. If your ownership spends less than $200M in payroll, they are robbing you, or alternatively, if they aren’t able to turn a profit with a $200M head start, they don’t deserve to exist, let alone be competitive.

IMO consistently winning the division / making the playoffs makes an MLB team a dynasty, not necessarily winning in the playoffs where anything can happen.

The Dodgers have won the division basically every year for the last decade+ and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. That is the competitiveness problem. Small market teams are rarely perennial contenders.

This was a charade completely concocted to be able to say the unofficial deal with the Dodgers wasn’t an official deal with the Dodgers until the signing date was official.

I am not disappointed or mad about the news at all, because I knew he was a Dodger weeks and months ago. I am disappointed this process was allowed to play out with any seriousness by himself and agent. Now we will read stories about how so and so team that never had a shot had a shot according to Sasaki but fell short. More drivel.

Even if he was leaning towards the Dodgers the guy has the right to kick the tires and explore all options. It’s his life and decision after all, not yours. Of course, everyone in same situation would have done the same if they’re honest. And no team was required to court him.

If you’re not mad why cry about it on MLBTR site? You’re disappointed? Again, no team had to play the game. I guess you’re the smart one who knew and your team’s GM the idiot. And you have ZERO inside information how it really went down. Fans get more upset than the actual teams that played the game. Only one winner. And usually the loser team fans are the ones who complain the most.

I don’t know if this is directed at me, but I clearly stated I wasn’t mad he picked the Dodgers, and I also stated I never imagined in a million years he wasn’t going to be a Dodger. Also, my team never had a chance in hell, nor should they have, so not mad on that point either.

My point was simply that before the process started it was a fairly open “secret” he was going to the Dodgers and that it appeared to a lot of people this was a dog and pony show to get rid of the perception that rumors of a verbal commitment being in place before the process began had no basis. He had the right to pick any team he wanted. No sour grapes. I just didn’t appreciate the show that held up a lot of the international market, and cost some teams a lot of time and effort for a pointless cause.

We all knew that the Dodgers were the heavy favorites to land Sasaki for all the obvious reasons. But it’s ridiculous how these supposed grown men make accusations that they have ZERO proof of. And Dodger fans all knew that there would be many accusing of this when Sasaki signed with the Dodgers. It’s typical sour grapes five-year old reaction and incredibly off-putting. Hope Sasaki remembers this in 6 years if he hits the FA market.

There’s already a hard cap on INTFA signings. Why should perennial losers get rewarded with the top players? What is Pittsburgh going to do with Skenes? Surround him with cheap, mediocre talent until he’s close to free agency then trade him and the process starts over with the next Skenes. Maybe they get a wild card birth one or two years. Rinse. Repeat.

There’s 30 teams in the league. Not every owner is a Nutting. Sure, a few guys will go to perennial losers, but a few will go to strong mid-market teams and make them better. Baseball has more parity than football these days. Getting in the dance is all it takes… see Rangers v Diamondbacks

If there’s enough parity already then there’s no need for an international draft which is just another way to reward teams for losing. There’s more than enough incentive already to reward losing teams. With the hard cap and loss of real dollars spent for signing QO FA, let it stay the way it is.

Has anyone been to Tampa recently? That city has boomed over the last five years. San Diego? Philly is one of the smallest east coast cities yet is considered “big market”. It’s ridiculous. The “small market” owners pocket a bigger percentage of income than some of the “big market” teams yet everyone lets them slide

But, that’s not parity at all. Baseball has more literal opportunity with less artificial opportunities in super-expanded playoffs. That’s seen in the fact that baseball has far fewer dynastic runs than the other two sports, particularly In the past 25 years.

If there’s parity in football, then why have the Patriots and Chiefs won all the chips in the last few years? Basketball had the Warriors winning every chip in the 2010s. Yet there hasn’t been a dynasty in baseball since Jeter’s Yanks. Think before you post….

The irony isn’t lost that the ones arguing unfairness by having a cap are from NY and LA fans.

Patriots have been a disaster since Brady left. There’s your equalizer. Is there even a scenario in the next 10 years the dodgers will fall off?

Chiefs don’t win because they had an advantage to get players. They drafted well to get and keep Mahomes and built a good culture through a winning coach. If a market in Kansas City can build a dynasty, anyone can. What small market team can build a dynasty in baseball? Your best case is the Rays development system and winning trades, but they always have to sell on players at their peak or can’t afford the guy to put them over the top.

What was really sad was that the Angels didn’t trade Ohtani before his contract was up. That was inexcusable for Arte and Perry. Lame effort to try and get some marginal players in before the trade deadline to attempt to make a push for the playoffs which blew up. They should have seen the writing on the wall and traded him to one of the teams that had a much better chance to make the playoffs that year. They could have scored a significant prospect haul which is so important for a franchise with a poor farm system.

It is hilarious to me.He wants to play on a great team because they get to the playoffs.I think it says more to me as if he was great or going to be great,Wouldn’t it be more of a feat to take a team such as the Pirates or Rockies to a Championship.Collections of stars are expected to win.I think it is more impressive if you take a team that is not known to winning and make them a winner. That to me says more of a career.

They can each take turns dominating for 100 innings
    Good for the dodgers

Because the player (part of the MLBPA) got what he wanted, where he wanted, with the team he wanted (part of the MLB), and the team got him at the league negotiated price, its going to cause another strike/lockout?

He and teams negotiated the deal as per terms of the current CBA. I think you’re drunk or an idiot on this post.

I guess this is what MLB wants. The NL will be like watching a Law and Order episode. You know how it will end. The AL will be far more interesting to watch.

Japan has a strong league, why not put their stars on one team in the MLB, it could eventually be LA/Japan Dodgers against the rest of the league in the All-Star game. What Japanese star is next for LA.? They may need a 3rd baseman next year.

      1. Well a partial article on MLB trade rumors already has near 400 comments – media benefits
      2. MLB is continuing to expand into markets outside the US,
      3. this SHOULD force other organizations to elevate their game
4.it allows foreign superstars to be in the MLB increasing the popularity of the game abroad causing more kids to play resulting in more future talent and viewers.
      5. ticket sales and prices are always highest when big name players come to town to play your home team
      6. teams and players now marketing to the new global markets rather than just the US market.

Yeah its early in the process and it sucks if your organization is not adjusting quick enough, HOWEVER, this was one case where everyone was on equal ground regarding money and the current Dodger business model has again proven to be above the rest.

The CBA showdown next time is going to be a war. Baseball is sideways right now. This must be fixed. Here’s what needs to happen….super strict painful penalties for teams going over the CBT 3 times running……loss of all drafting ability….loss of all ability to sign international players…..4x cost on everything over the CBT. Also, there needs to be some kind of floor. Any team getting revenue sharing has to spend all of it on players so greedy cheap owners can’t just pocket it.

    • Wrian Washman

I’ve been advocating for heavy handed draft pick penalties for YEARS. Taxes means nothing to the top 5 or 6 spenders, even less to the 2 NY teams and LA. This crap would end FAST if every year the Dodgers couldn’t pick until the 10th and if their revenue sharing was aggressively increased essentially single handedly funding the Rays, Pirates and Athletics. Provide a minimum percentage of that revenue sharing money that the bottom feeders MUST spend. It’s not wrong to force teams to spend money that’s not really theirs. It would be wrong to force teams to spend their own money. If crying poor while the Dodgers only get bigger is the complaint this fixes that perfectly.

When was the last time the Yankees had the best players? Having the most money doesn’t win WS, having the best players does and that’s the point they’re all on one team.

Well, so what was the point of all of this?
We are witnessing in real time the death of free agency bidding wars.
Teams are going to go take it or leave it you got until the end of the day or we’re moving on..
If I was Jays or any other team I would tell these agents to stick it!
This will mean that players won’t be able to play teams off of each other.
    It will kill the market.
If I was the union I would be livid. They are cutting off their nose to spite their face.
Whose the next player to come over from overseas? Who gives a crap!
I also don’t care about either of these teams

If MLb doesn’t change this system – where teams have no chance at acquiring future stars from foreign lands – then it will continue to shrink and become a one horse town. This is on the commissioner; when the Dodgers got Ohtani committed to such a ridiculous contract, MLB should have closed that loophole. Now that the Dodgers essentially laughed at even its richest rivals (nevermind the 2/3 of franchises that have been slapped into stagflation due to TV deals becoming charity work) there is no reason why the league should not impose a harder cap as well as introduce a international draft. 20 teams are now glorified 4-A franchises, & someone has to save the idiots from damaging the game further.

Ignorant to think MLB can impose a cap of any kind, or an international draft. EVERYTHING has to be agreed to by the players union

Most MLB teams have signed between 15-22 players each in this signing period.

The Dodgers have committed to ONE.

He can be 10-14 on this team and nobody cares because they have all these other stars. Now if he had signed with the White Sox, he would probably have to be a clear cut ROY / Cy Young type pitcher.

And becoming a juggernaut on paper means nothing you actually have to play and win the games. So while LA is the clear cut team to repeat on paper,if they play poorly in the regular season they might miss the playoffs. Other teams like the Yankees have had all star rosters and missed the playoffs or been knocked out of them early.

It’s really bad for baseball. It’s going to get really hard for any season ticket holder to justify paying full price to see crappy teams 90% of the games. Those fans are better off just saving the money and buying aftermarket tickets when one of the 5 good teams come to town. When fans don’t feel like their team has a shot at anything. Whoops, hit the post button accidentally.
If the owners don’t get involved, get creative with a TV, radio, streaming deal, they will fall behind some of the bigger markets. Some of these owners want baseball to bail them out. Want the successful owners to bail them out. If they can’t or don’t want to actually spend the money that it takes to compete, they should sell out! And noway should MLB be talking of expanding. I seen this week Dave Ricketts, owner of the Cubs, purchased “The Granite Creek Ranch” for around $9 million near Jackson Hole, Wy. He plans to turn it into a vacation destination. His plans are to build cabins, a main lodge, a spa facility, a fine dining restaurant & bar. A naturalist center offering workshops, guided activities & curated programs. A quote from the article “in all the resort will be 22,000 square feet when complete, on the 33.6 acre site”. Jaubert wouldn’t say how much money Ricketts proposes to INVEST in the design and construction of the new resort.
“I can’t share the exact numbers,” she said. “However, we’ve allocated sufficient resources to ensure the project’s success”.
So, boo hoo for all these small market teams and the large market teams whose owners don’t want to reinvest in the baseball team that they just had to have! I feel for you fans! The McCourt years were not fun for Dodgers fans!
So many of the owners crying foul, poor me while crying all the way to the bank with your hard earned money! The Dodgers, Yankees Phillies, Mets aren’t ruining baseball, cheapskate owners are ruining it!

And players who aren’t on the Dodgers don’t give a rats but if they win or lose as long as they get paid.

Although the Padres made the playoffs and were just ONE win from advancing with their best team ever, ownership has spent ZERO on ML signings, are actively trying to trade some of the best players, and ownership is embroiled in a nasty custody dispute.

Slow and steady, I can’t help but feel like I’m losing interest in MLB. I’m a serious hardcore fan that has also worked in and around the game, but for me, MLB will go by the wayside for me just like the NFL did.

First the woke stuff and now the ever growing disparity in competitive balance. I’m not even sure at this point, I can avoid the slide out of my life.

Help me out here. You’re against “the woke stuff” (no clue what you even mean by that btw) so presumably you are at least right leaning, probably an understatement. But then at the same time, you’re against the free market MLB rules and want competitive balance? Very left of you!

As a I said he seemed to be only interested really in LA. He has the potential especially with many other teams in the AL and NL to be a number one starter but with the Dodgers he will be at best a number 4 because of their depth in starters. I would have been happier if he had picked Pittsburgh or Tampa Bay or Cincinnati than a juggernaut like LA.

Picking the team you didnt want him to does not mean he feigned interest in other teams, which he likely was truly interested in. Also, it literally doesnt matter if hes #1 in the rotation or #4 as far as his career goes. Trying to appeal to an ego for someone you dont know is an odd choice

Not a Dodgers fan but whether or not you’d be happier if he picked another team is not Sasaki’s problem. Womp womp

Wow, no way…how unexpected. In other news; fish like water, the sky is blue, and Pinocchio has wooden balls. We all knew, if we were totally honest with ourselves anyway…that Juan Soto was a Met as soon as last season started and the Yankees hadn’t signed him to an extension; and that Sasaki was a Dodger the moment he decided to come to the US. They really could’ve saved a bunch of time by just handing him a Dodger jersey the instant he said “I’m going to MLB”. I recall an article about a month ago, and a fellow Red Sox fan in the comment section complaining that the Sox hadn’t met with, or tried to meet with; Sasaki. And I replied, that as bargain conscious and thrifty as the Sox have become…if they aren’t at least making a passing effort to get a guy this young, with this track record and repertoire, who won’t cost anything for years…the ONLY explanation was that they already knew it was a pointless effort, and that he’d be signing with the Dodgers. Why he even bothered with the “three finalists” nonsense, is beyond me. The Dodgers were the only finalist from day 1. It is kind of crappy for the fans of the Padres and Jays…giving them any hope, when there was no genuine chance he was going anywhere else. More power to the Dodgers, they’re doing everything within the rules…and the sustained success has made it so they’re the preferred landing spot for EVERYONE. But at some point, it’s gonna get a little boring and repetitive for non-Dodger fans.

Bowden says there should be an investigation into Sasaki’s signing as he was always going to sign with the Dodgers….

“There were several front offices that believed there was a pre-cut deal between the Dodgers and Roki Sasaki.”

    Jim Bowden GM

Unless there was a legal voice recording of a clear verbal agreement, that investigation will get nowhere. I have always hated the Dodgers. Lifelong Giants fan from the Bay area.
However, I had respect for Vin Scully and some of the good players that they developed. Kershaw is like Buster Posey to the Giants, Class player, good family man, represents the organization with Class.
It is no longer a level playing field and that is on the Commissioner of baseball who is clueless and ruining the sport. I don’t blame players for wanting to play for a winning organization, great weather, etc.
My only real complaint is that Sasaki and his agent, DID HAVE A HANDSHAKE AGRREMENT to sign with the Dodgers and knew all along that was what they were going to do. They just didn’t have the cajónes to come right out and say he was signing with the Dodgers in the beginning. And while I am at it, Ohatani gambled on games, (should have been banned for a least a year) put the blame on his interpreter and I am sure money was given to his interpreter to take the blame.
I think the Dodgers should sign Bregman to play 3B (he can defer all the money) sign Flaherty as well (he can defer all the money). They can have an all star at every position and win 140 games each year. And I will still hate them!

This sport is a f***ing joke and so are all of you. “Oh the Dodgers draft and develop!” Not one pitcher in your rotation and only Will Smith is “homegrown.” “Savvy?” Buying an All-Star team and the three best players to come out of Japan is not savvy.

And Soto and the Mets? That shows you that the Mets HAD to spend that disgusting amount just to make sure the Dodgers didn’t buy him.

Can’t think months is good for baseball where one team monopolizes a market and with Ohtani deferred contract and now this Roki signing this just isn’t great for baseball. The next collective bargaining agreement has to address deferred contracts, place a soft floor cap on every team at 200m and a soft ceiling cap of 400m. If you are under cap you lose your first round pick and if you’re over you lose your first 3 round picks. No more giving money to teams that don’t invest in there roster. Also a universal world draft needs to be established. How is it fair for American born players? International players can sign with whatever team they want and they get paid allot more and they are all projections other than Roki. I believe in free market and capitalism but unfortunately when one team seems to be able to corner a market and use deferral payments to continue to build the roster it makes it harder for other teams to compete.

International players are limited to international pool money. If they’re pros they have to wait to age 25 to become unrestricted free agents. If they don’t they become amateur free agents (if their team will allow it) and are subject to the same international pool limitations.

Deferrrals make zero difference in either luxury tax calculations or available funds to sign players.

I can’t imagine that anyone is surprised by this. It was the obvious choice.

I wasn’t impressed by the World Series while I watched a Dodger team that wasn’t at full strength make the Yankees look like last years White Sox during the regular season. It was boring except for a couple of innings where it looked like it might become more competitive. But for the most part there was little suspense or drama.

During this off season, I have watched the Dodgers gobble up all the top tier talent state side, and also what some would argue the best international prospect that was available. Some here would argue that all owners and teams could have done the same thing, and to those people I agree with you. But why should they when it is a business? Each team owner is entitled to make money, how ever much they want and they do not owe the fans anything and if you think otherwise you’re wrong. So, while some teams run their business this way and the others run their business that way, you will never have conformity, or all teams fielding a team of equal strength. This is reality and this is how the league is set up. Truthfully, I think the fans are more bothered about what the Dodgers did this year than the team owners.

At the end of the day, I am more disinterested in this year than any other year. I don’t like the direction that the sport is going, and the MLB brand itself is just becoming less entertaining to me. I just don’t know how anyone will compete with them in the near future. I am not renewing my tickets, I don’t plan to watch the games on TV and I will be spending my spring and summer fishing more. I’ll return when things are a little more competitive. Have a good weekend all.

I do have to say, the off season has been full of drama though, and I have been drawn in, because I simply can’t understand how MLB, the league, the brand, could actually permit this to happen. I think the shock value has pulled me,. That doesn’t change the fact that has a business, it sure appears dysfunctional.

Yeah, when the Dodgers gobbled up all the top tier talent stateside and signed Juan Soto to the largest contract in sports history I was pretty annoyed as well. But that wasn’t enough for them, as they proceeded to then sign MLBTR’s number two top free agent Corbin Burnes to a contract over 200MM. You would think the greed would stop there but no, they are heavily rumored to be in on MLBTR’s #3 free agent Alex Bregman.

Of course we already know about Blake Snell but rest assured they will sign the other two remaining FA from MLBTR’s top ten, Pete Alonso and Jack Flaherty, since they’ve been connected to them in rumors all offseason. Never ending. How will they even fit Willie Adames and Max Fried on the roster since they were also signed?

I used to be a Yankee fan when I was a child… When I grew up, I realized they had an unfair advantage because there is no hard salary cap, so they could out spend any other team because they generated the most revenue…. economics 101…. The Catch22 is economics, so MLB wants the large market teams to be in the playoffs/ WS because it generates more revenue…. The only way to change the status Quo is to boycott televised large market games especially playoff/WS games until they make a hard cap and have equal revenue sharing….. SMH

When player x says they want to play in the east coast, all the east coast teams decline to make an offer out of principle? The padres didn’t try to use their Japanese players connection with Roki to lure him to SD?

Every team makes use of whatever advantages they have unless you are willing to call out every home town discount, every “i just want to be closer to may family” , Then i would suggest you stop being a hypocrite and just admit you don’t mind teams having advantages as long as its not the Dodgers (in other words you are just jealous of the Dodgers).

Its the same problem the yankees had back in the day….the biggest 2 markets in baseball have the money to spend to buy their championships if thats what the owner wants to do with the money. Just about every other sport has a salary cap…baseball has needed one for a long time because the Dodgers have become far worse than what the yankees were in the 90s and early 2000s

You can’t argue with these bandwagon Dodgers “fans,” they are truly cockroaches where if you think you’ve made a good point to one another jumps in and says the same thing. They know the team has a ridiculously unfair advantage but I mean I get it, why would any fan of any team just say “yeah, we cheat, I’m gonna still support us anyway though.” It’s like politics, you can know you’re 100% right about something but trying to convince someone else is a complete waste of time and only makes them stick to their argument more.

So I am going to give you the literal best advice you’ll ever get: Do what I did and take $500 and bet it on these dirtbags right now to win the World Series. That feels like a small price to pay to see them not win. If they do win, you’ll profit $1,500 for having to listen to these insufferable trolls. It’s really a win-win and it’s all we can do as they ruin the sport.

Mickey — LAD is just using their assets and leverage as best they can. They’re not cheating, but certainly they have advantages.

Where are all the “the Dodgers are on the wrong side of 30, and signed up through 40, they’re going to regret those upside down contracts” ra-ra-ra posts.

LAD look great, fantastic, legendary…and yet you win nothing on paper.

The hardest thing to do in sports is winning when it’s expected of you. (Arguably, anything less than total dominance is laughable by the bar the LAD set).

Folks need to take a deep breath. There are many roads to Rome.

Probabilities aren’t certainties. The best chance is still a chance.

Just for clarification here: *when* is the absolute earliest the Dodgers and Sasaki could discuss a long term free agent-style extension? At the end of the standard 6 years of team control, or upon the first year of arbitration, or….?

Like, all kinds of players sign early extensions, so once he’s called up, why can’t he? Or, given that in theory teams simply choose not to pay players top dollar pre-arbitration and choose to pay players a fraction of their market value during arbitration years, why can’t the team and player simply choose to skip all that?

Again, as I understand it, if a team wants to pay a first or second year player $50M a season, they can do that, but in this case they can’t?

And ownership infighting and cross suing each other. Missing out on Sasaki was not in their control but a lot is, and they’re mostly dumpster diving. Sure, Padres still have a nice 1-2 in Tatis and Machado, plus Darvish, but where’s the help, and how are they keeping up with the Dodgers, let alone staying ahead of Arizona now.

This is why I’m not a rabid baseball fan anymore. I prefer the parity of the NFL over the dynasties of MLB. I will watch 15+ hours of the NFL every weekend during football season but saw a grand total of 2 innings of the World Series this year! Plus, I haven’t attended a game in person in over 5 years when I used to go regularly and even travelled to other cities to see MLB games.
I understand changing this situation will be difficult because the massive national TV contract creates an even playing field for NFL teams while the majority of MLB’s revenue comes from local TV and is therefore not shared. Unfortunately, baseball is dead to me until the Pirates, Royals, Reds or Tigers have the same chance of winning as the Dodgers or Yankees.

100% agree. It used to be my favorite sport and now I just don’t care. Sure, the Chiefs are threatening a three-peat in the NFL but at least other teams have a good chance. The Dodgers may not win it all but they’re playing with a handicap making it that much harder for anyone not the Dodgers. It’s really sad what happened to this sport, and so many people don’t care because it’s the Dodgers. Imagine if the Astros were the ones spending like this and getting whoever they wanted. Other teams have a better chance in baseball. Pretty much every Super Bowl lately has been won by Brady or Mahomes. Football is more of a snooze-fest, cuz you know who’s going to be in the Conference Chsmpionship or Super Bowl every year. You prolly the one laughing at the Dodgers every time they got bounced in the divisionals. Now suddenly, baseball is broken, because the Dodgers signed a couple good players. Look around. Plenty of great players on other teams. Got some serious perception issues….

The only way that will ever happen is a salary cap and floor. The only way that happens is if you killed a season or two, as the MLBPA would strike in perpetuity. The owners would have to wait the players out, but risk irreversibly destroying the sport. There are no heroes in this drama, only villains.

So, any MLB free agent should be too? This guy was already a major league player in his country, why should he or any other player like him, be forced to play for a team in a city he has no interest in whatsoever?

Enjoy dodgers fans. This is what it used to feel like as a Yankees fan back when big George steinbrenner was alive. Winning titles. All the free agents falling over each other to sign with you each off season. Ah the 1990s were a glorious time to be a sports fan. So enjoy it now while it lasts.

Baseball should quickly adopt a mandatory international draft, including players of Latin American countries. No signings permitted without the draft. It will probably require some age adjustment for Latin Americans, but it needs to be done promptly, in order to maintain competitive balance.

Congratulations to the Dodgers on their signing but I hope MLB is aware that sooner or later all these big money signings are eventually going to sink the team financially and there is no way the other twenty nine teams are going to all chip in to save them when it happens. The fire sale will make Charlie Finley’s sale of the A’s stars in the 70’s look insignificant.

Correct. Even though salaries are deferred for 10+ years, the Dodgers need to pay the salaries now so this doesn’t happen. They put the money into an escrow account to ensure payments are available to the players when they are due. The Dodgers can actually benefit from this as they get to earn (and keep) any interest earned on the escrowed funds.

Pursuant to the CBA: “Deferred compensation obligations … must be fully funded by the Club, in an amount equal to the present value of the total deferred compensation obligation, on or before the second July 1 following the championship season in which the deferred compensation is earned.”

The CBA goes on to state that “fully funded” means “the Club must have funded, for the duration of and without interruption in each year, the current present value of the then outstanding deferred payments, discounted by 5% annually.”

People are gullible if they think this deal was not done months ago.

Sasaki wanted to go to the Dodgers, his agent figured out a way to do it and now he is a Dodger.

The fix as they say was in.

Dodger fans can and should be excited but please spare everyone with a brain the idea that Sasaki did not just lie to everyone about his interest in any other teams.

As for Sasaki picking the Dodgers, well that is his choice, but man, wow, no competitive spirit at all in this kid.. He went to the WS champs to be the 3-4 guy in the rotation.

If he wanted to shock the world, he would have picked the Pirates.

NBA and NFL are just better products right now and baseball better watch out bc other leagues are gaining…

We will see how Sasaki does being the target of every angry fan base in the MLB…I am not betting on him.

What I fault the Japanese players for is lack of imagination. I would think it would occur to some if them to try something different instead of doing the obvious thing every time. The money would be just as good anywhere; they are simply too in love with the IDEA of being a Dodger….And by the way, I still would pick the field over the Dodgers to win the WS this season.

When will MLB get a HARD salary cap? It is ridiculous that they are going to spend 400 million dollars a year when the Rays and Reds are spending less than a 100 million. Why not just hand them the World Series Trophy and cancel the season. It is F***ing beyond idiotic that the commissioner let’s this crap happen. I remember the day the commissioner wouldn’t let the Big Red Machine acquire Vida Blue because it would have made them to dominant. Really? Why even watch baseball anymore? At least in the NFL there’s some attempt at keeping teams equal.

A hard salary FLOOR is more like it. Too many owners don’t do enough to invest in their team leaving MLB with a Major League disparity in misappropriated funds.

From the Pirates to the Reds to Baltimore to the Twins to the Rockies to the A’s to the Mariners to the Angels, there is so much more these owners can do to field competitive teams yet EVERY YEAR it’s the same story.

Its time for MLB to consider a hard salary FLOOR.

The Dodgers had poor ownership for years after they were sold to Fox Corp and then to the McCrooks. For those who don’t know, the McCrooks were forced to sell the team because they took the team to the brink of bankruptcy. They couldn’t even cover payroll. The current Dodgers ownership, since DAY 1, were dedicated to running the team the right way. From single A all the way up to the majors, they’ve kept their word and have set in motion a winning philosophy and a positive club culture that is the envy of MLB.
