Cubs, Astros Still Discussing Pressly; Tigers No Longer In The Mix

By Anthony Franco | January 24, 2025 at 7:37pm CDT

7:37pm: Nightengale reports that the Tigers are no longer in the running. If Pressly does agree to move, it’s expected to be to the Cubs.

6:57pm: The Astros have officially asked Ryan Pressly whether he’d approve a trade to the Cubs, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 reports that they’ve also asked the reliever if he’d accept a deal to the Tigers. Chandler Rome, Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic first reported this afternoon that the Tigers had been in discussions with Houston about Pressly.

In any case, it seems the ball is firmly in Pressly’s court. Bob Nightengale of USA Today writes that the Astros have reached a “tentative” agreement with at least one of those teams, which is obviously conditional on Pressly waiving the no-trade rights. Bruce Levine of 670 The Score suggests that the Cubs feel the holdups on the no-trade protection are “resolvable.”

Pressly has full no-trade protection as a player with at least 10 years of MLB service and five-plus service years with his current team. He grew up in the Dallas area and has pitched in Houston since the 2018 trade deadline. His wife Katharine is a Houston native. It’s not out of the question that he and his family simply prefer to stay there.

Pressly combined for 110 appearances between 2023-24, which triggered a $14MM vesting option on his deal. That’s probably a little above market value but not dramatically so. José Leclerc and Andrew Kittredge each signed $10MM free agent contracts this winter. Blake Treinen, who is six months older than Pressly, landed two years at $11MM annually.

After serving as Houston’s closer between 2020-23, Pressly moved into a setup role last year. That was in response to their late strike to add Josh Hader on a five-year free agent deal. He had a solid season, working to a 3.49 earned run average through 56 2/3 frames. Pressly’s strikeout rate dropped to a league average 23.8% clip — his lowest mark since his 2018 breakout —  but he posted a solid 7.4% walk rate while picking up 25 holds.

The Cubs and Tigers have both been exploring the closer market. Each would presumably give Pressly the chance to return to the ninth inning. Chicago has a few less experienced pitchers (e.g. Porter Hodge, Nate Pearson, Tyson Miller) who could compete for saves. It’s a similar story in Detroit, where Beau Brieske, Jason Foley, Will Vest and Tyler Holton are part of what would projects as a closer by committee group. The Tigers have a strong relief group but lean heavily on their bullpen in games not started by Tarik Skubal. Adding Pressly would solidify the back end. He’s a known commodity for skipper A.J. Hinch, who managed him in Houston between 2018-19.

It’s nice that Presley has the option of making the right decision for him and his family.

If he’s this reluctant to leave Texas ( and I don’t blame him) then how motivated will he be to perform in Chicago? Will his head be in the game? Move on Hoyer.

Who says he’s reluctant? This post has been up an hour. Maybe he needs to check with his family, get input from Cubs players he knows, etc.

At 14 million that’s the price for an A-1 Closer. Scott would have only cost 4 million more and it’s a massive drop in arm talent. Hoyer is so stupid he would probably give a lesser guy more years to save 4 million a year. That’s why he sucks. That’s why he’s a moron. That’s why he should just move on and and sign Estevez or Jansen. That’s why I hate him. That’s why I sincerely hope he gets fired. The end.

          Unclemike,

The price for an A-1 Closer is $18M-$20M, like Scott, Hader, and Diaz.

“Scott would have only cost 4 million more.”

He would have cost $58M more. There’s a lot more risk spending $72M vs. $14M. And it might have required more than $72M to convince him to play for an 83-win team instead of the defending champs.

I’m willing to bet that if Hoyer had offered Scott 72 million for 4 years right after they dealt Bellinger Scott would be a Cub, Pressly can pout away in Houston and we wouldn’t even be here looking at crappy options. Sorry but 72 million is the going rate for an ELITE Closer. 14 million isn’t what you want to be paying( And it’s going to cost more than that to get him) And not a guy WHO DOESN”T EVEN WANT TO BE HERE. It’s stupidity at it’s finest. Typical Hoyer move. Sorry but you’re wrong.

If you’re telling me Pressly is anywhere near Scott in ability you don’t really watch baseball. So why pay him like he is? The only downside to Scott would be an arm injury , So tell me what P is injury proof? It’s just the cost of doing business that comes due once in awhile.

You said $14M is the price for an A-1 Closer, and I disagreed. I also didn’t say Pressly “is anywhere near Scott in ability,” nor did I say Pressly should be paid like he is.

You sure seem to be mad at Hoyer and are creating a narrative to be angry about.

Then you must be an Astros fan who wants to dump his salary on the first idiot who comes along. As a Cub fan I only hope there is somebody in the building who is smarter than Hoyer. We can only hope. Cubs don’t need him as there are better options out there. Although better might be debatable. Less costly would be a better choice of words. You would think the Neris disaster would be enough of picking up Astro trash.

What a ridiculously dumb and untrue comment. Chicago is a world class city with amazing parks, food, entertainment, museums… etc. I have lived in Chicago all my life and travel all over the country for work. I have a pretty good reference for comparison. If you truly live anywhere near Chicago you must never leave your backyard. I am guessing you actually live in some podunk IL town nowhere near the city and seldom spend anytime downtown. Probably a town where they worship the Orange dictator and get all their talking points from FOX News. No real Chicago native would ever call the city a 3rd world hell hole. If that’s how you feel GTFO! Most MLB players who play for the cubs love it here, many make it their home and remain affiliated with the team afterward.

These comments in response to me are laughable, acting like I am the one who made this political. The dude who bashes my city calling it a “3rd world hell hole” didn’t originate that thought or base it on his own experience. Those words literally are a quote directly from the chief FELON and RAPIST himself and are echoed on Fox News. He took a cheap shot at the city I love, not with any creativity, original thought, or even his own experience, but just a chance to piss out Trump words. I don’t have “TDS” I just have no respect for anyone naive, idiotic, or hateful enough to support a lying felon and rapist to lead our country. None of you needed to chime in either, but I guess you couldn’t resist the opportunity to defend someone else from your cult.

Good to hear the Tigers are making moves and not letting the Bregman pursuit handcuff them in addressing their other needs. Pick him up, sign Flaherty and Kim (if his shoulder is fine) and call it a day! That would be a fine offseason. Pressly is a good shutdown piece for the bullpen.

I’m all in on Flaherty, but there has been no talk that Detroit is looking for a reunion. I don’t see the need for Kim. Tigers have middle IF that projects to be similar bats, and should be ready by ’26. Kim would need a multi year commitment to be worthwhile. May as well go with Vierling/Jung to start the year. Not much improvement but the off season is not over yet.

Kim’s versatility and proven on base abilities would fit well in the lineup and be a great improvement over McKinistry. Kim won’t be ready at the start so Jung/Vierling at 3B and Baez/Sweeney at SS would start the year and Kim is there to take over if someone (Baez) falters.

Flaherty just seems so obvious a fit for the #2 spot.

They need to do something more than they have so far to fill the gaps.

It’s also called the “Santo Rule” It’s named after HOF’er Ron Santo who was able to decline a trade from the Cubs to the Angels, due to his seniority in MLB and five+ years with the Cubs. He ended up being traded that same offseason to the White Sox, playing one season, mostly at 2b, and then hanging up the cleats.

Pressly earned his “10 and 5” rights. Its harder than people think to make 10 years in MLB, especially for a player. That’s why its a big deal when a player, manager, coach or trainer crosses that threshold. In addition to a player’s 10/5 trade benefit, 10-yr vets also qualify for an MLB lifetime pension. $86k/yr at age 45. $275k/yr if they wait until 62. A couple of seasons ago Martín Maldonado got his 10 yrs. It was quite an accomplishment.

If it just assuming the contract and sending a non-ranked minor leaguer, then I like it. This should not require a team top 30 prospect. Just a live body so Houston can pretend it is not solely a salary dump.

Suarez would require a MLB overall top 100 prospect, Helmsley would require two of them. And Estevez might get three years. Pressly is an ok add if there is no subtraction along with it.

@Knicks sounds about right at best. Even a more than serviceable prospect from within the Cubs’ 15-30 ranks may work (example: RP Jack Neely) based on the Cubs’ current needs out of their bullpen and Freely’s merit.

Knicks… There is no way the Cubs pay that salary and also give up a 10-15 level prospect as well. You’re dreaming.

Neely’s not going anywhere. He’s young, throws hard, and is cost-controlled. He’s just the type that Hoyer craves in the bullpen.

Dude’s making $14m this season, keep your home in Houston and rent a penthouse somewhere on the North Side on Lake Michigan. The beach and scenery is gorgeous and summer in Chicago is beautiful. This isn’t that hard of a choice. He could also have the Cubs flip the bill in order to waive his NTC…

My guess is yes. My thought is that is a bigger trade will be put together than just Presley to the Tigers in order for the Astros to clear enough salary to add Bregman. From the Tigers standpoint, adding Parades also fills the 3B need and clears a path for Bregman to return to the Astros without doing something drastic like Altuve to LF.

If the deal gets done and if the Cubs absorb the full salary – two large ifs – it’s hard to see much talent coming back to Houston. The trend line on Pressly is not great and 2025 will be his age-36 season. But Houston is mostly looking for salary relief, anyway.

Then some teams salary may be near full (DET, HOU, SDP, CUB, AZ) and other free agents may need to find a different play to play. Flaherty, Scherzer etc.

Possible MIN SP trades, Cease, Montgomery

SEA, CIN, MIL, MIA, OAK, KC, CLE, COL, PIT, CHW still have some work to do.

If Detroit walks away from Bregman, they can use that money for a closer, Flaherty and Grichuk. It’d be more in 25 but they’ve had 200+ mil payrolls in the past.

I agree in Flaherty but I don’t know thst they really need Grichuk. They have some young guys like Malloy who can exploit the matchups and could soak up those at bats instead. He looked great in the playoffs.

How about Flaherty and Kim (if their arms are both good). Kim’s a better version of McKinistry who can play all over, get on base in the #1 spot and provide insurance for the 3B and SS combos the Tigers look likely will run with to start the season. I like Kim as a lot way better than Bregman. There is bound to be improvement on the offence/long ball side pretty much across the lineup with such a young team.

Possibly Kim. They said he was a fallback option after Bregman and Santander about a month ago. Santander is signed and I don’t think Bregman is coming to Detroit. I think he’ll resign with Houston if they still have the 6/156 out there like they’re making it sound.

I honestly don’t know. I like him as a player, and believe he will come cheap. Let’s call him a super-sub for 2025.

In 2026, we should be able to trade Yoshi, or get rid of him, depending on performance. That leaves us a year to convince Devers to take over DH and leave 3rd to Kim.

And I think the best to go with Mayer is to trade him for young pitching. We have Story for 3 more years. We have Arias coming. If we can get equal value for Mayer, to me, it’s the best way to maximize Arias’ value.

Question to all but specifically fellow Tigers fans. Would you rather:
    A) relive the Dombrowski days where we win the division every year but never make it past the first round in the playoffs even though 70% of our team are all-star caliber players?
    Or
    B) be where we are right now with the kids?

Interesting question. 5 playoff appearances in 15 years is decent. Two WS appearances is good, but -0- WS wins is disappointing. But I also think the Tigers are in really good position right now.

The difference is really payroll. For DD’s 14 years, the Tigers averaged being 10th in baseball in spending. In the past 3 years, the Tigers averaged #23. If the owner gave Harris the same level of spending that his father handed out, the Tigers would be one of the best teams in BB.

Before, we didn’t have the system in nearly as good shape as it is now. We only need a couple finishing touches. Providing most take their anticipated steps forward. If it weren’t for the Baez and Maeda contracts, we’d have a super low payroll right now. So, probably where we’re at because Detroit can’t sustain a huge payroll like teams on the coasts. If we could, then sure. Dodgers have the money and a good minor league system. They’re about in as good a position as a team could be.

I think the goal is to consistently make the playoffs the way the Dombrowski teams did, but to do it with more home-grown players, which I believe is the right goal.

Getting into the playoffs is the goal, because anything can happen once you do. DD’s Tigers lost 2 WS primarily because of those ridiculous dead periods between the end of the ALCS and when they started the WS.

DD’s teams had some great talent, but with two, main fatal flaws: 1) Too station-to-station and, 2) Lack of trustworthy bullpen. There was also an unsustainability to building teams like that, huge free agent one after the other.

So, IMO the Tigers are actually on the right track. Overpaying for Bregman wouldn’t just saddle the Tigers with another huge contract, it would block a roster spot for the next 5-6+ years. Nobody wants another albatross contract like Javy & Miggy clogging the lineup.

I would have preferred Profar to Bregman.
