Guardians Sign Luis Frias To Minor League Deal

By Nick Deeds | January 2, 2025 at 11:43am CDT

The Guardians have signed right-hander Luis Frias to a minor league deal with an invite to big league Spring Training, per a club announcement.

Frias, 27 in May, signed with the Diamondbacks out of the Dominican Republic as an amateur and made his pro debut back in 2016. After slowly making his way through the lower levels of the minors in his early years with the club, Frias quickly rose from High-A all the way to Triple-A during the 2021 season. While he struggled to a 4.93 ERA in 23 starts across three levels of the minors that year, that didn’t stop Arizona from giving Frias his first big league opportunity down the stretch. He pitched fairly well in that brief cup of coffee, with a 2.70 ERA and three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings of work, though his five walks represented a clear red flag regarding how his command would play at the big league level.

Those control issues manifested in the form of a brutal 2022 season. Frias’s sophomore campaign in the desert scarcely could have gone worse, as he posted a 10.59 ERA in 17 big league innings of work while once again walking (17) more batters than he struck out (14). His 3.99 ERA at Triple-A offered some level of optimism, though even that was held back by a 12.3% walk rate at the level. Despite his struggles, Frias’s tantalizing stuff was enough to convince Arizona to keep him in the fold for 2023, and he delivered the best season of his career in return. Though he walked 12.2% of opponents in the majors that year, Frias posted a 4.07 ERA that was 9% better than average by measure of ERA+ in 31 innings of work. His 18.7% strikeout rate was lackluster, but in terms of pure run prevention his results were those of a perfectly adequate middle reliever.

Unfortunately, Frias’s performance went back off the rails in 2024. In 13 MLB appearances split between the Diamondbacks and Blue Jays, the right-hander struggled to a 13.97 ERA and 5.55 FIP while recording just 9 2/3 total innings of work. Things even looked dire at the Triple-A level during his time in Arizona, as he posted a lackluster 4.88 ERA for the club’s affiliate in Reno. Fortunately for Frias, however, he dominated at Triple-A late in the year after being plucked off waivers from the Snakes. He posted a 0.96 ERA and a 27.9% strikeout rate for his new club’s Buffalo affiliate, and while that wasn’t enough to convince the Jays to keep him on their 40-man roster this winter it was evidently enough to earn Frias a look from the Guardians this winter.

While Frias isn’t likely to break camp as part of a crowded Cleveland bullpen, he’ll now have the opportunity to work with one of the league’s best pitching development organizations in hopes of further harnessing his potential and sorting out his command going forward. In the meantime, he’ll serve as a non-roster depth option for the Guardians out of the bullpen who could be called upon in the event of an injury.

A centerfielder who can also pitch! That’s thinking outside the box.

This way they can have a guy play two positions but only one salary

There must be two Luis Frias. This link shows an outfielder, not a pitcher.

Nope. Cleveland would want more plus they wouldn’t take Casas since they already have Santana and Manzardo

Ramirez is the face of the franchise and signed a very team friendly extension with a no trade clause that he isn’t likely to waive. Gimenez was traded as a position of depth, which part of the return was flipped for an area of need (starting pitching).

Santana just won a Gold Glove and the team likes Manzardo. Abreu would be a nice get but Casas doesn’t give Cleveland something they don’t already have and there would have to be a bigger return to even get the Guardians to consider asking Ramirez to waive his NTC

Gimenez isn’t a third of the player Ramirez is. Not getting elite players for table scraps/fringe starters.

Ramirez has a no trade clause that he will not waive. He took millions less to get the no trade because he wants to stay in Cleveland. He is not available. Besides, there is no Ramirez trade that makes sense for Cleveland. Give it up.

Cleveland trade Gimenez for a controllable starting pitcher. Cleveland needed pitching and 2B is a position of great depth in their system including Juan Brito who hit 21 home runs and 40 doubles at Triple A in 2024 and the number #1 overall pick in the 2024 draft in Travis Bazzana. Gimenez never developed as a hitter and was soon going to be extremely expensive. It makes absolutely no sense for the Guardians to trade Ramirez.

If they are so good, why do you want to trade them? Both average offensive players. And Priester couldn’t even make the Pirates rotation. Literal scraps

Got him and Miguel Castro confused for a minute. I was thinking “Didn’t he just sign with the Astros two days ago?” But both have in common that they were pitching WS innings they never would have been pitching if they were not on the 2023 Diamondbacks.

Ramirez has a no trade clause. Part of his bargain basement contract he signed

“Bargain basement contract”? Jose was a full TWO YEARS away from free agency.

Clearly you have no clue what the present value of money means.

Do you really have any clue what you’re talking about or do you just throw stuff out there and hope someone believes it. You have to be kidding about present value of money. Do you really believe that he would not have made more in current dollars if he waited two years and signed the contract he could have received on the open market? I think you need some basic math courses

You need a course in basic economics.

And that’s on TOP of the fact that Jose could have easily suffered a career ending injury or been in an accident and THEN what would his family had said? Glad we waited for the big bucks? That thumb injury could have easily sapped his power….he’s already chasing more than he ever has. Once that bat slows…

Not to mention that he would have been a free agent in one of the most free agent unfriendly winters ever, or did you forget collapse of TV deals and how the Boras Four never came close to what they expected to get in that landscape? Jose would have been fortunate to get a deal with a guarantee that would have eclipsed what he got…and yes, adding in the present dollars and avoiding the immense risk.

Jose got multigenerational wealth for his family, and he got to secure his future where he wanted to play. Isn’t that enough for you? Do you need to tell fairy tales as if you could predict what’s going to happen two years ahead of time?

“A bird in the hand is worth…” But nah, that kind of smarts doesn’t resonate with most fans who refuse to acknowledge the fragility of sports careers. And the real funny thing is, you ignore the risk the TEAM took signing that deal! It was a perfectly sound shared risk arrangement between two consenting parties who knew what they wanted and what they could tolerate.

Jose Ramirez insisted on a no trade clause and wouldn’t sign his extension without it. He’s going absolutely nowhere.

I see a lot of people here and on social media trying to make up proposals for Jose, and I promise you that you’re wasting your time.

1999, He took many millions less because he wants to stay and win in Cleveland. Cleveland just played in the ALCS in 2024. Where were the Red Sox last season? Oh yeah, playing golf.

Ramirez will never be a Boston Red Sox so they will have to make their playoff push without him. Cleveland would laugh at your offer and block any future calls.

I’m a Sox fan and even i know Cleveland is in a much better position than the Sox are right now. You keep proposing trades where the Sox give up their young players for expensive veterans, if this were the mid-00’s you might be right but the team today doesn’t do that.

Ramirez isn’t leaving Cleveland, if he wanted to chase a ring he could have left in free agency and got a $200 million dollar deal with the Yankees or the Dodgers. He chose to stay and left money on the table to do it so all of this is moot anyway

I actually really like the roster that the Red Sox have, and of course they’d be a title contender with him. You can argue if you think they’re more suited to win a title than the Guardians as much as you want, but I promise you he would never approve a trade sending him anywhere — not to Boston, not to LA, not to Japan, not to the moon.

He loves Cleveland and specifically pushed for a no trade clause in exchange for taking such a below value extension. I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with your view of the Red Sox long term — I’m just saying it will absolutely never happen and you’re wasting your time.

No, but you could easily look at your proposal from the view of both teams. If you did that, you would easily see that any Ramirez trade was a no go for the Guardians.

Heck, Cleveland has the third best all-time winning % in the American League and seventh best in MLB history. The six teams ahead of them are all major markets. It gets tiresome listening to fans of big market teams lecture Cleveland what the team should be doing (especially when 99% of the proposals do nothing but improve their prospects at our expense).

Ramirez has already played in the World Series, he was with Cleveland when they lost to the Cubs in 2016, and Cleveland is still very much a team that can get to World Series in 2025…
