Royals Hire Ned Yost As Senior Advisor

By Anthony Franco | February 11, 2025 at 8:32pm CDT

The Royals announced this afternoon that they’ve hired Ned Yost as a senior advisor to general manager JJ Picollo. Yost, the winningest manager in franchise history, returns to the organization six years after retiring as skipper.

“My deep love for the Royals, for Kansas City and for the people there never left,” the 69-year-old said in a press release. “So I just want to help, because I know I can help. I know what it takes to build a world championship club, and I think we’re getting close. I think we’re getting really close.”

Yost managed the Royals between 2010-19. His 10-year tenure is by far the longest of any manager in organizational history. While the team was in a rebuild at the bookends of that run, Yost guided them to consecutive pennants in 2014-15. He joined Dick Howser as the only skippers to lead the Royals to a title when they won the World Series in 2015. Yost finished with a 746-839 record. The Royals inducted him to their team Hall of Fame late in the ’23 season.

“Our fans remember Ned’s leadership helping produce some of the best moments in Royals history,” Picollo said. “He knows what winning a World Series here takes because he’s helped make it happen, and his experience both as a leader and with young players will help us make better decisions and keep pushing toward another championship.“

I mean it’s probably really boring being retired when you lived your whole life traveling , and watching baseball.

The royals are the only team I remember where they didn’t spend a ton on payroll and won it all

Then it’s all big market teams that won after

I don’t count St. Louis as bad spenders since they have spent an ok amount typically near the luxury tax

I’ll be honest, I don’t remember when the Mariners won it all.

Who said the Mariners won it?

As for low spenders, wasn’t Florida/Miami low(er) budget?

I forgot about the old Florida marlins that’s a good example

But if I remember things right at least in 2003 they had a better owner than Bruce Sherman

But 1997 was bad after the season

They were 25th in payroll in 2003 when they won it and 7th in 1997.

Loria was literally considered one of, if not the worst owner in the league when he ran the Marlins

I just double checked since it’s been awhile (23 years) but the Angels were LITERALLY middle of the pack (15th) in team salary when they won the World Series in 2002.

It’s telling with even being 93 games under .500 that Yost is the Royals winningest Manager. Lots of years where it looked like they could contend (especially in the middle 90’s) and never could quite do it.

As a Rockies fan I can’t say I hate the Marlins 97 strategy: throw the kitchen sink at it, get the ring, sell the farm.

Salvy, Gordon, Zobrist, Escobar, Cain, Hos, Moose…the list goes on. Loved watching the Royals in 2014-‘15. No huge stars, just a bunch of hard nosed guys putting in work, pulling for each other and having fun.
