Athletics Select Max Muncy

By Darragh McDonald | March 27, 2025 at 2:05pm CDT

The Athletics announced today that they have selected the contract of infielder Max Muncy. It was previously reported that he would be breaking camp with the A’s. To open a 40-man roster spot, left-hander Ken Waldichuk was placed on the 60-day injured list. The southpaw is recovering from Tommy John surgery performed last May. They also placed pitchers Brady Basso and Michel Otañez on the 15-day IL and infielders Zack Gelof and Brett Harris on the 10-day IL. Basso has a strained left shoulder, Otañez a right shoulder sprain, Gelof hamate surgery and Harris a strained left oblique.

Muncy, 22, is somehow not related to the other Max Muncy. In addition to having the same first and last name and both being A’s draftees, they also both have August 25th as a birthday, though the Muncy who is now on the Dodgers was born 12 years earlier.

The younger Muncy was a first-round pick in 2021. He has hit .255 /.346/.427 in the minors since then, climbing his way up to make his major league debut. His 10.4% walk rate in that time is quite strong but his 28.5% strikeout rate is certainly on the high side.

The injuries to Gelof and Harris cleared out a path for him and it seems like Muncy will open the season as the club’s regular second baseman, though veteran Luis Urías is around if Muncy struggles. Muncy is considered capable of being a solid defender at shortstop but the A’s have Jacob Wilson lined up to take regular playing time there.

As for the IL stints, none of those comes as a surprise. Each of those ailments were reported prior to today.

185 wRC+ in spring training? I’m glad the Dodgers let him go. That won’t cut it in the MLB… *

The Athletics wanted a re-do after seeing Max do so well with the Dodgers, they don’t want to miss out a second time!

If they collide on a play at 3rd or something it might create some sort of time paradox.

I had a similar situation once in New York at the intersection of 1st Avenue and 1st Street, which I believe is the nexus of the universe.

In Atlanta you can sit at the intersection of Peachtree Road and Peachtree Road. With a Starbucks and a Waffle House across the street from another Starbucks and a Waffle House….That, in fact, sir is the nexus of the universe! Lol

Love me Seinfeld lol…I’m exaggerating but there is a million Peachtree Rds, Ave, St, etc. Someone tells you go down and take a left Peachtree…which Peachtree?! is a legitimate question

As a Dodgers fan I’m disgusted that we would let such a talented player go for absolutely nothing! He’s the best infielder we’ve had since the late great Davey Lopes.

Done with this team for good.

same uncommon full name, same profession, drafted by same organization, same birthday. This is clearly a glitch in the simulation.

I am part of a legion of Giants fans that will never let MadBum pay for his own drink ever again for his legacy, and the Dodgers can go eat dirt, but… man, that Max Muncy outburst was embarrassing for MadBum.

I’m a Dodgers fan, obviously. But I loved me some Mad Bum, and I’m glad that fans like you exist. It’s going to be hard to top a better match up than Kershaw vs Bumgarner. I can make jokes, but Mad Bum has every once of my respect.

Blue Jays drafting technique – Draft sons of players with AllStar or HoF credentials.

A’s drafting technique – Draft players with the same name as players who had success once they went to the Dodgers. I sense an impending draft pick of Olmedo Saenz or Trayce Thompson.
