Clarke Schmidt To Miss Start Due To Shoulder Soreness

By Mark Polishuk | March 16, 2025 at 9:19pm CDT

Clarke Schmidt was scheduled to start the Yankees’ Grapefruit League game on Monday but he has already been scratched from that planned outing due to some shoulder soreness, manager Aaron Boone told the New York Post’s Greg Joyce and other reporters.  Schmidt’s right shoulder is “not bouncing back as well as he wanted to” following his last outing, Boone said, so the club is “just being cautious with it.”

The issue isn’t considered serious enough to send Schmidt for any tests, and he is still slated to work tomorrow in another capacity, as the plan is for the righty to throw a bullpen session.  Should all go well in that session, Schmidt would then return to the rotation for another start.

It is the type of seemingly minor injury that usually might not merit too much attention, except for the injury woes that have already ravaged New York’s pitching staff this spring.  Staff ace Gerrit Cole and highly-touted prospect Chase Hampton will each miss the entire season due to Tommy John surgery, and reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil is out until June due to a severe lat strain.  JT Brubaker is also out recovering from rib fractures, leaving the Yankees down two starters and two depth arms before the season has even gotten underway.

Schmidt was a bit of a question mark even before this shoulder issue, as a bad back had limited him to just one previous start in Spring Training.  It could be that Schmidt’s current shoulder problem is just a bit of fatigue from the lack of build-up thus far in camp, yet that still represents a potential roadblock to avoiding the injured list.  Joyce notes that the Yankees were already planning to hold Schmidt off until the sixth game of the regular season, as off-days on both March 28 and 31 allow for a bit of rotation flexibility.

Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco are currently competing for the fifth starter’s job, but both pitchers would end up in the rotation by default if Schmidt indeed had to go on the injured list.  Brent Headrick would then likely become the top rotation depth arm, with Allan Winans and Brandon Leibrandt also in the mix.  It speaks to the Yankees’ initial depth that even this makeshift situation wouldn’t be that bad, but naturally it would be  far preferable to have a healthy Schmidt taking a regular turn.

Schmidt is already coming off a long injury absence in 2024, as a lat strain limited him to 85 1/3 innings.  The right-hander still impressed with a 2.85 ERA in that relatively small sample size, though he struggled to a 5.25 ERA over three starts and 12 innings in the playoffs.

Carrasco has been decent but wild. 5 walks allowed but he’s hit 3 batters in 11 innings.

You have to think Cashman is watching the waiver wire to see if something becomes available

Hearing Joey Gallo is now available to pitch? Maybe a reunion is in the works?

He could probably pitch better than he hits.

Don’t let John Mozeliak of the Cardinals know that Joey Gallo has decided ….since he can’t hit anymore …. that he can pitch.

That would mean a “lightning in a bottle” type of player of whom Mozeliak signs.
The type of washed up players John Mozeliak has thrown the entire St. Louis Cardinals Franchise under the bus to sign.

This philosophy … is the philosophy which … over the past 7-8, which
has deteriorated the entire Cardinals Franchise!!

Why the Cardinal’s owners have supported this man and his actions and inactions is beyond belief!!!!

Any chance the Yankees could rent a few of the Hanshin Tigers pitchers?

They probably would have to ask the Dodgers permission prior since the country of Japan is basically their AAAA team at this point

        ISOB,

It’s ok don’t feel bad for me. I always have my favorite NFL team to watch towards the end of each season to take my mind off baseball if the Yankees collapse.

Oh wait, I’m a lifelong Jets fan

CravingHead, I am just blessed to hear for everyone’s sake that at least you’re not a NY Giants fan. There is one more level down in sports fandom hell you could go, and we will be your support structure so that never happens. Go Yankees!

@Baron Yeah I guess my basic point was regarding the NY Giants being seemingly worse off than the NY Jets atm, and that is saying a lot because the Jets have their own special set of problems & dysfunction…a case could be made that the Giants are the worst team in the NFL. If I was a New Yorker I would struggle with these two teams and perhaps just be a Bills fan? I dunno. But then again I’m stuck with the Seattle teams so it’s not like I’m in 7th Heaven Sports Paradise either.

I was born, raised, and live in NYC. I can’t root for teams from elsewhere just because they’re winning.

I agree with that premise. And I am no fan of the Bills at all. I didn’t grow up being a football fan (and still vehemently oppose College Football) so NFL has been a newfound midllife interest. Still learning the ropes.

Saying that the offense for the Yankees has to come up big is too general.. ….specifically Rice and Dominguez and Wells. These are the guys that have to come up big..!! because no matter what anybody says judge is not gonna come close to repeating last year, especially because Soto’s not there.

Boone, send Schmidt for an MRI ASAP. At this rate, Joey Gallo may end up being the fifth starter… while he remains available as a free agent.

Sign spencer turnbull or kyle gibson you could get them for the min! At this point they will need to ramp up but you can never have enough. Get them on a minor league deal. Someone else already said it but Trevor Bauer also makes sense especially since he said he would play for nothing

“Playing for nothing” is appropriate to his market value, both as a pitcher and a person.

I’ve never heard of so many shoulder pains, Oblique strains, pulled muscles, elbows, calf muscles strains —- at the beginning of the year in any Spring Training season that I can Remember…… and I’m 74 years old!!!

Multi Million dollar players couldn’t care less if they come into camp in shape or not!!!

They’re still going to get paid their multi millions for the season, whether they’re hurt or not!!!!
So why put any effort into insuring their health???

They are set for life and don’t care what happens to them after they sign their huge — life changing contract!!!

Minor league players are still the ones who come into camp in shape!! They’re the ones still fighting for a position on the team!!!

Schmidt is in his prime. Should start 30 games each season. I don’t get it with these nagging injuries when they had off since last November. I miss starters of old who pitched complete games and even lost!

This is going so badly. From 7 starters to 3. Yanks might need to blow up their intentions to stay before the tax lines abs get guys like Monty and hope he could be had for just a low minor league wild card prospect
