The Giants will be without infielder Casey Schmitt for around a month after imaging revealed a Grade 2 strain of his left oblique, manager Bob Melvin informed reporters (including Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area). Schmitt landed on the 10-day injured list over the weekend and will be out well beyond the minimum.
Schmitt broke camp as a righty-hitting utility player. There haven’t been many reps available behind Willy Adames, Matt Chapman and Tyler Fitzgerald. Schmitt has consequently platooned with lefty-swinging LaMonte Wade Jr. at first. Both players have struggled, leading to a combined .125/.211/.250 slash out of the position. Only the Rockies have gotten worse numbers from their first basemen.
A former second-round pick, Schmitt owns a .217/.260/.363 batting line in 414 MLB plate appearances. That includes a 4-23 start this year. He has yet to take a walk while going down on strikes nine times. A month-long absence probably won’t necessitate a move to the 60-day injured list, but any kind of setback could bring that into play.
Schmitt’s IL placement was the first in-season move the Giants have made. They’d avoided any kind of roster shuffling amidst the team’s strong opening three weeks. David Villar, who was outrighted off the 40-man roster late in Spring Training, was reselected in Schmitt’s place. Villar drew into yesterday’s lineup against Angels southpaw Yusei Kikuchi. He’ll probably take the lesser side of the first base platoon with Wade. Top prospect Bryce Eldridge is on the minor league injured list with a wrist issue and hasn’t played this season, so Wade should have a fairly long leash.
That’s too bad. SF can have DJL for a bucket of balls or a dozen hot dogs
No need for that scrub.
Need the balls and dogs much more.
Probably should have moved on from both these guys when they sent the nerd packing
Still living in the past where an ex POBO lives rent free in your head.
Just. Not. Relevant.
Ha ha. He is back. Fantastic.
How is Lee going ?
How about Wilmer ?
Are you embarrassed ?
He should be. I saw where he described Lee as swing a wet newspaper. Maybe the Giants should get more of those wet newspapers for some of their other hitters.
Schmitt. Another crap Giants prospect that can’t Hit.
Yeah a 115 ops+ last year was awful. Only 40 games, but he still has potential
Dude. What’s going on ?
Where’s the dig at unknowledgeable giants fans ?
Cmon mate. Be better.
They need to trade him when he gets back, he deserves a chance to start. Dudes amazing defensively, no reason to platoon him at first
Just my opinion, but I have to disagree. Not with trading him, but the Giants wouldn’t get much of anything in return if they did. But disagree that he’ll be anything more than the 74 OPS+, -0.1 WAR, guy that he’s been for his career. I could easily be wrong, and I’d be happy if I was, but it seems like Schmitt has fans based solely on his 2024 ST.
I don’t disagree they wouldn’t get much, but he’s not doing anything for them as a 1st base platoon. He may be a middling offensive player, but we won’t know until he gets a chance to actually start. All I know is his defense is wasted at first
I see him as average to slightly above average with the glove, but not as a plus defender. Admittedly he hasn’t really played enough for the defensive metrics to be conclusive, but so far they aren’t that good. If the defensive stats hold true he appears to be an above average player at 1B and 3B, but below average at SS and 2B. He has a fantastic arm, but the rest of his game is only so-so IMO.
What really dampens any enthusiasm I had initially is seeing him at the plate. He’s far too aggressive. In 2025 91.7% of his ABs started with strike one. His plate discipline was better last season swinging at 35.5% of pitches outside the zone, which still isn’t good, but this season it’s up to 51.2%. Again that’s a small sample since he’s had only 24PAs this season, but it’s troubling.
So he is being called a SECOND GRADER ??
Considering that obliques can be notoriously difficult to completely heal and/or prevent a recurrence, if it really does turn out to just be a month out of action for him, that’d be a reasonably decent outcome, IMO.
Giants didn’t believe they needed anything at DH or first base. Pete Alonso is hitting .346 with 6 home runs.
Flores plays 1st and DHs. Makes $3 mil and costs ZERO in penalties. Are you stupid?
Batting cage injuries are spiking as swing velocities push human limits.
