The Marlins announced after today’s game that outfielder Griffin Conine suffered a dislocated left shoulder and is currently undergoing further evaluation and treatment. It’s all but certain that Conine will require a stint on the injured list. While a more specific timetable for the injury won’t be clear until he’s been evaluated more fully, it should be expected that Conine will miss quite some time. Dislocated shoulders can often require a recovery period measured in months rather than weeks, and severe dislocations can even require surgery that would jeopardize the remainder of Conine’s 2025 campaign.
Trevor Story, Shohei Ohtani, and Jung Hoo Lee are among the players to have recently required surgery after suffering a separated shoulder. Ohtani’s partial dislocation required only arthroscopic surgery, and he wound up being ready for Spring Training just three months after going under the knife. Story’s surgery in April of last year was also to correct a partial dislocation but was nonetheless expected to be season-ending, although he ultimately managed to make it back to the majors in late September after roughly five months on the shelf. Lee, by contrast, suffered a full dislocation back in May and ultimately missed the remainder of the 2024 season.
However long Conine ends up missing, it’s nonetheless a frustrating setback for the 27-year-old. A second-round pick by the Blue Jays back in 2018, Conine was traded to Miami as part of the Jonathan Villar trade and made his MLB debut late last year. Conine has looked like a solid contributor in 49 big league games since his promotion, hitting .273/.338/.441 (116 wRC+) to this point in his young big league career and even earning the everyday left field job for the rebuilding Marlins. That everyday job figured to be a very effective proving ground for Conine that could offer him plenty of runway to earn either a long-term job as a regular in Miami or perhaps even catch the attention of rival clubs as a potential trade piece, but all of that now figures to be scuttled for the foreseeable future.
A Marlins club that was already lacking in outfield depth after Derek Hill hit the shelf due to a sprained wrist earlier this week now figures to be tested even further. Jesus Sanchez and Dane Myers are currently sharing time in center field while Kyle Stowers serves as a regular fixture in right field. That would leave a combination of Sanchez, Myers, and utilityman Javier Sanoja to mix and match in left field as necessary out of the club’s current outfield options, though a bat will surely be brought up to replace Conine on the roster in due time.
Victor Mesa Jr. is already on the 40-man roster and could be called up to share time in center with Myers, pushing Sanchez over to left, or a non-roster veteran like Albert Almora Jr. could have his contract selected from Triple-A to help fill out the outfield depth chart in Miami. One other potential x-factor for the Marlins could be top outfield prospect Jakob Marsee, who came over from San Diego in the Luis Arraez trade. Marsee has looked good in 18 games at Triple-A to this point in the year and could slide into an everyday outfield role seamlessly for Miami, though it’s unclear if the club would have any interest in bringing the 23-year-old to the majors (and starting his service clock) without seeing a larger body of work at Triple-A. Marsee is also not yet on the 40-man roster and would require a corresponding 40-man move, though a particularly long absence for Conine would solve that issue by way of the 60-day injured list.
That sucks like watching him play hopefully it won’t put him out too long
Why does no one talk about how his dad was literally Mr marlin??? Not even the article referenced Jeff
The marlins are the most forgettable franchise in North American sports, even more than a team like the Columbus blue jackets or Anaheim ducks

Strong agree with your first paragraph
Mildly disagree with your second paragraph. Marlins have won a World Series.

Fish won WS in both 1997 and 2003. Something another major leaguers’ kid, namely Griffey, Jr., and his friends, the Big Unit and AROD, were unable to do for the Mariners.
This is a conversation about most forgettable team, not worst team, then I would bust my M’s out
Griffey and Randy and A-rod and Edgar and ichiro and Felix are what make the mariners not forgettable, and j-rod and Raleigh and arozarena and the starters are what make them not forgettable today
Now the marlins, all of their stars would go on to other teams (pudge, Kevin brown, Derreck lee, Stanton, yelich, etc etc) and they have no one right now except maybe Xavier Edwards

If you are saying that the 2025 roster is the most forgettable, sure Edwards and Alcantara are the only names most would remember. Norby and Sanchez have some promise. Agustin and White on the way. Not a lot.
Its Nick Deeds. What else needs to be said.
It’s kind of an insult to the kid to keep mentioning his dad every time there’s an article about him, don’t you think? He’s trying to build his own career. If I was reading an article about the Reds, I wouldn’t want to keep seeing a reference to Griffey Sr. every time they mentioned Griffey Jr when he was playing there.
Griffey, Jr. was one of the greatest ever, way better than his Dad. Tatis, Jr., way better than Dad. Conine and Clemens, the Dads have more fame. Vlad Guerrero is maybe an example of a son equal to Dad in being well known, though Dad is more accomplished.
We had Ruben Amaro Sr. and Ruben Amaro Jr. in Philly. Meh!
The elder Amaro was a slick fielding SS with a light bat. Junior’s bat wasn’t much better.
However, Junior did ascend to the GM’s role in Philly. Made some bad signings, trades and extensions to vets. Instead of Ruben Amaro Jr. the Philly press nicknamed him “Ruin Tomorrow Jr.”.
Had Bob Boone in Philly, but his papa (Ray) never played for the Phillies. Neither did Bob’s two sons Brett and Aaron.
It’s talked about a whole bunch in SoFlA
Hey no need for the ducks to be catching stays on this
When it rains it pours for some of these teams. He looked like a keeper early on.
Ohtani was treated for a subluxation, which is a partial dislocation of the shoulder. A complete dislocation is a much larger deal.
dang, like rooting for this kid. that kind of power with just miserable minor league strikeout rates. somehow since being promoted (SSS) hasn’t K’d as much. and i like pulling for anyone in those couple of minor league classes that got screwed by covid
Victor Mesa Jr. Funny.
Marsee has hit .211 in Jacksonville this season. He has looked bad, not good. Not sure what scouting report Deeds was looking at because the stats show the opposite of what he wrote in this article.
Your take is surface level. Look at underlying numbers for both this season and last. We stopped evaluating people based on only BA like 20 years ago.
Marlins
Maybe his underlying numbers show a lot of progress, but Marsee is not ready for a call-up.
For sure, I am glad he didn’t get the call today and gets time to develop. My main point was that Marsee will almost never be a player buoyed by a strong BA. Very unlikely outcome for him. Also, look at the WRC+ last year, he was somehow above average despite that line Southern League always BRUTAL.
Indeed, wRC+ is way more important and predictive than batting average.
Read the take the writer of this piece took. He said he looked good in the 18 games this season. He hasn’t. He has looked absolutely lost at the plate.
I think Mesa Jr is still on the Minor League IL,
Marsee started the season 2 for 20 then went 11 for 30. He has 2 HRs, 15 walks, 14 stolen bases including yesterday (Saturday)when he hit a homer and a double. His OBP is now over .400 for the season It may be early, but it could be a good time for him.
Yep, Marsee runs like a deer. Probably the everyday CF for the Fish come July.
Was a terrifying moment to see his agony. Triggered a lot of ptsd in a lot of players who been injured for sure too. So sad. He has a lot of promise. Hope he’s better soon. That’s why I hate sliding head first. Too may injury risks.
Yeah, and no pun intended, but the kid got a tough break. I liked that he always had a high OBP in the minors. Article makes it sound like he’ll be gone for the year, or at least most of it.
Believe, with regular PT vs. RHP only, he was capable of .265 15 60. In a ballpark more conducive to hitters and in a better lineup, I’d feel comfortable upping those numbers by 20%.
The Marlins, in an attempt at saving money on both player and uniform have activated Jeff Conine to take Griffin’s place on the roster and in LF
Jakob Marsee might be the replacement. He’s not amazing but worth a shot.
