The Pirates are shutting down lefty reliever Tim Mayza for six weeks, director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk informs reporters (including Colin Beazley of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Alex Stumpf of MLB.com). The southpaw went on the 15-day injured list over the weekend with a lat strain. Stumpf notes that he’s also dealing with a teres major injury.
A six-week shutdown means Mayza very likely won’t be back until after the All-Star Break. He won’t be cleared to resume throwing until June at the earliest. He’d need multiple bullpen and batting practice sessions before heading on a minor league rehab assignment. A transfer to the 60-day IL is all but assured.
Mayza signed a one-year, $1.15MM free agent deal in February. He’d had a decent run with the Yankees after being released by the Blue Jays. Mayza had been tagged for an 8.03 earned run average across 35 appearances with Toronto. He allowed an even four earned runs per nine through 18 innings in the Bronx, striking out 12 against three walks. The Yanks non-tendered him anyhow, but the solid finish got him a roster spot in Pittsburgh. Mayza looked good in the early going, striking out eight amidst 9 1/3 frames of three-run ball.
The Bucs still have three left-handers in their bullpen. Ryan Borucki and Caleb Ferguson are working in the middle innings, while Joey Wentz can pitch as the long man. Borucki has allowed four earned runs through 10 innings. Ferguson has worked 11 innings of two-run ball. Wentz has surrendered three earned over 12 2/3 frames.
Wow. There go their playoff chances
Playoff chances left a long time ago when they traded Ortiz and replaced him with that bum Heaney.
Yeah. Ortiz ran into the Yankees today
Heaney got the Angels
I figured this was coming.
Heaney vs Yankees 7 innings 10 strike outs 1 run
I believe there are better days weeks months years ahead for Ortiz.
I really really like what Cleveland has done with him. He’s just walked too many so far. Cut down the walks and he is going to be good. Better than he was in Pittsburgh. Like next time Mendoza wants to have a discussion on how good Marin is Cleveland pitching coach with Ortiz is my exhibit A. The most basic adjustments that Marin failed to see or refused to do. Marin only looks good because the previous pitching coach was awful towards the end and there’s some awful pitching development teams out there. Your love for Ortiz got me to watch him. I noticed some things right away. Checked the data and it just slaps you in the face. What was Marin thinking? Trick question he wasn’t!!!!!!
If the Pirates hired me to improve Ortiz it would have taken me 2 minutes. And I would guess it took Cleveland 2 minutes as well. Marin never figured it out. No one in Pirates management did. I’m being serious here. In 3 to 5 business days bright eyes could have figured it out. Yesterday I was fine with Marin. Now I am fine if they fire him. I gave him a pass on Tim Hill but twice. Williams Cherington Shelton the entire mlb scouting and analytics department all needs fired. Like today. This minute. Go all AI. AI already better than what Cherington has put in place with his useless meat bags.
Clevelands pitching coach had nothing to do with Ortiz. Like it was a unpaid intern or Neil Huntington. I’m kidding. I like Neil. Enough to know it’s Neal.
Ortiz vs Angels 3 runs 2 hrs only 3 strike outs.
Doesn’t seem the Heaney got the pathetic Angels so easy to do good against pathetic Angels vs Ortiz got the mighty Yankees so you can’t do well against the mighty Yankees angle is going to work for you here. Nice try though.
Heaney in only 5 games has a 10 k game and a 9 k game.
Ortiz entire pirates career.
10k games 0
9k games 0
8k games 0
Ortiz in only 5 games with Cleveland has two 8 k games and a 10 k game.
Good time for them to call-up Hunter Stratton right about now.
Where’s Hunter
AAA Indy. I don’t think that he was yet 100% healthy in spring training after last year’s season ending injury.
Yeah probably not. And the off season isn’t a off season. He missed a lot work.
Waiting for that RichardJarzynka to pin the blame on the fans for Mayza being injured. “Pittsburgh is not a baseball town” is going to be his reason for Mayza’s IL stint.
Right after the standard, “But Nutting is losing millions” spiel
Nutting made 3rd most $ of any baseball owner. He can afford to make Pittsburgh a baseball town.

You’ll have to excuse me. I’ve muted this blathering moron.
One possible silver lining is that people might actually connect the dots and realize hmm billionaire has no interest in running this team as a public interest and solely as an investment vehicle.
And if they’re willing to do that, what else might they be willing to do?
Yea I’m ready to mite the troll also
Where is the evidence that Pittsburgh is a good market for baseball?
The Pirates went to the playoffs for the third straight season and won the second most games in MLB in 2015 – and were 9th 0f 15 NL teams in attendance. The Brewers, with a record of 68-94, had a higher attendance than the Pirates.
The Pirates won their division in 1990, 1991, and 1992 and could not sell out National League Championship Series games.
The Pirates were consistently one of the very best teams in baseball throughout the 1970s and attendance was always dismal.
What is the evidence for Pittsburgh being a good market for baseball?
I already told you before. You either aren’t smart enough to understand or just like running your mouth. Welcome to the internet you fit in perfect. I’m not being a mean smart as. It’s demographics 101. Basic as it gets. You either have too low intelligence or like running your mouth. Will try one more time.
One of MLB smallest cities with one of the smallest ball parks isn’t supposed to have high attendance. 9 out of 15 is fantastic. After 20 straight years of losing and with possibly the worst owner in sports it was incredible.
It’s too good of a baseball town. 20 straight losing years should have had a bigger impact. Fans quit. Their kids never became fans. Their kids never became fans. Now you had another 10 years of hopelessness. But if the hated Nutting would have fired Shelton and signed any outfielder not named Pham over 2m would have showed up. Instead it’s another projected losing season. Every fan knows Nutting Williams Cherington Shelton are all awful. Absolute garbage. But 1.6 1.7 1.8 million people will show up to see hopefully a 70 win team that will finish next to last or last. That’s some impressive attendance. That’s a baseball town. Key word town because compared to many cities it is a town.
You come into every Pirates article telling Pirates fans they suck. Bob Nutting is who sucks. Not Pirates fans. Payrolls never been much more over 100m. Many times closer to 50m. And you tell us he’s broke!!!! Where’s the money being spent? It’s not on protecting Clemente tribute on Clemente wall. He made $ on that covering it up with a alcohol ad. Not on letters or phone calls to the bucco brick people. Wasn’t spent on a outfielder or 1b. Maybe he spent it all on Shelton. Actually only explanation he’s still here.
Richard..who pays you to troll? With the tristate population, the pirates did about as well as they could with attendance during those years. I really don’t care what people post, but you have to be open minded in you’re posts, NOT STUPIDITY
He Mayza be fine after 6 weeks. But Mayza not.
Mayza not bad but a Toyota would still be going.
6 weeks?
More like Juneza
That’s not bad. For a human.
I don’t watch much MLB baseball. But I seen something that made me come up with a new programming segment. Inspired by everyone thinking Shelton is awful. It’s called Stupid manager of the day. For days I watch baseball and see a manager being stupid.
8th inning game tied at 2. Close play at plate. Called out the possible winning run. Phillies manager challenges the call as he should because it’s the freaking 8th inning possible likely game winning run and it’s so late in the game you most likely won’t need your challenge so might as well give it a try on such an important play. And you can always ask the umpire to challenge something anyways and they almost always grant your request. Manager waited too long and wasn’t allowed to challenge the call. Maybe should call it the Shelton of the day. Anyways like comment and subscribe if you enjoy this new content.
Holy heck am I a snarky hole. I see why people hate AI.
This Mayans article is hot better get more stories on him….. Nevermind it’s just 1 lonely pathetic drunken bot talking to itself.
I apologize for all the comments. It’s just Pittsburgh isn’t a good market for baseball so I tried to single handedly make up for the lack of fans.
Wow who let this bumbling idiot in?
Mute button is your friend
Need hitters!! Not pitchers. When is Gonzales due back? He could be a spark. Bucs need hitters that make consistent contact with me on.
Interestingly, the Pirates have managed to raise their team batting average by about 25 “points” over the last week. Over the last five games, they have averaged eleven hits per game. Over the last three games, their team batting average is .324, which leads the league. Is it sustainable or just a blip? Don’t know, not even going to try to predict.
Their pen has been quite good for the team with 3.31 ERA vs. 3.78 SIERA. Unfortunate that he’s been shutdown but at least the pen is doing well.
He’s just a artificial idiot…AI. he’s under a new alias..dream gm…or dream (0)
Historically under the leadership ( cough cough) of Shelton, the 3rd game of a series, he uses the non hitting bench players substituting for the regulars
Except to see Canario, Suwinski and Davis in tonight’s lineup
The same lineup he wrote for the previous 2 games produced 29 hits and 12 runs versus only giving up 3 runs
With Carmen starting, it should quickly become a bullpen game
Bucs have good fans! If they could be in race year in and out, like the 70’s they will turn out for sure! They haven’t really developed hitters like they used to? 70’s they had 5 or 6 hitters in lineup. Been along time !
If 2013-2015 is any indication, fans do come out and fill the stands because those teams were competitive
