TODAY: The trade has been officially announced, with the Phillies receiving cash considerations in exchange for Clemens.
APRIL 25: The Phillies are trading infielder Kody Clemens to the Twins, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Philadelphia had designated him for assignment earlier in the week. Minnesota adds infield depth within an hour of losing rookie second baseman Luke Keaschall to a broken arm.
It’s the second DFA infield pickup for the Twins in as many weeks. They made a similar move to bring in corner bat Jonah Bride from Miami. Clemens, a left-handed hitter, has 402 MLB plate appearances under his belt. He owns a .197/.244/.367 slash over parts of four seasons. The Texas product has been far more productive in Triple-A. Clemens has hit .259/.331/.507 in nearly 1300 plate appearances at the top minor league level.
Clemens spent two-plus seasons in Philadelphia. He was included as part of the Gregory Soto/Matt Vierling trade during the 2022-23 offseason. They’d shuttled him on and off the active roster for the first two seasons, but he has now exhausted his minor league options. Philadelphia couldn’t get him back to Triple-A without running him through waivers. While he broke camp as a result, Clemens wasn’t playing enough to make that a worthwhile use of a roster spot. He didn’t start a single game and had come off the bench for just six plate appearances.
There should be a better path to at-bats in Minnesota. The Twins recently lost Willi Castro to the injured list as well. Clemens and Bride are multi-positional infielders off the bench. Neither can really play shortstop, but Clemens could factor at any of the other infield spots and in the corner outfield. He could play some second base when the Twins want to use Edouard Julien as the DH.
They’ll open an active roster spot by placing Keaschall on the injured list. They created a 40-man roster spot by running minor league catcher Diego Cartaya through outright waivers this afternoon.
Omg
Maybe Kody should have tried pitching like his dad.
Probably wishes he was 4 inches taller and could hit the juice too.
Clemens was great before the juice.
Whether Clemens was or not, steroids tarnished his career and he was a hothead.
Hammerin’, people say it more about Bonds but Clemens had his HOF entrance locked up and destroyed it with the steroids. He didn’t need them. He became stat-crazy.
mercenary, Clemens did pitch for the Phils in a 2024 blowout, and he did well.
And as a result, the Clemens’ own the record for K count by father-son duo.
I’d be curious if Mark McGwire’s son Mason will make it as a pitcher. He was drafted by the Cubs. If he makes the show with the Cubs it would be weird to see Mark wearing a Cubs hat and jersey to support him.
Make it a blockbuster for one of their BP arms, plus Byron Buxton. Phillies could offer some prospects with Kody Clemens for the pair.
Alex, I’ll take ‘OOTP Trades’ for 200.
Off of the planet?
It’s actually Ken now. Alex passed away. Sorry. Just had a nice wake n bake
No one wants Buxton
No one wants Buxton and his contract.
Sure, in the sense that it’s better to have replacement level players than sub-replacement level players if your options don’t include guys who are actually good or young guys who have promise. .
The Twins are lucky to be getting Kody Clemens who has not been given any real chance to prove himself in the bigs. When he did play in Philly in 2024, he had a number of clutch hits and displayed his defensive versatility in the infield and outfield. In 2025, he rode the pine and wasn’t given any opportunities to participate. Clemens can play and, hopefully, he’ll have the chance to prove it with the Twins.
He will prove to be a great addition and finally get some play time. Well deserved. Will be missing Philly 100%.
Season saved, obviously.
The Pohlad curse.
Phillies need to DFA more than just Cody at this point.
I remember when we had. Clemons in the Tigers system. Always liked him but felt this would be his career arc. Fringe MLB player, bouncing around the league and up and down in the minors. He is not his father. Not a horrible way to make a living, beats selling Lady Kenmores that is for sure.
Showing our age, Doctor. You’re reflecting on the old days when Sears was still around, and I understand what you’re referring to!
Good for Kody to get some AB’s .
Did the Phillies throw in Dumbrowski?
DD is a future HOFer whenever he hangs em up … what are you?
That may be true, but that doesn’t mean he’s perfect and incapable of messing up. He’s pretty boneheaded when it comes to bullpen construction.
Whenever I see someone use “Dumbrowski’ in their comment, I know that we are dealing with the clearance aisle of the Goodwill Armchair GM category.
The same goes for all of the long-winded, “the manager and gm are idiots” rants that occur on every thread. Most of the time the commenter failed in Little League but spends boatloads of time on their fantasy leagues.
An unintended positive of Kody’s departure is that Daddy Roger will no longer make guest appearances on Phillies telecasts. The last time I saw him on there, he rattled off some old Steven Wright jokes as if they were his own.
Not worth a bag of baseballs , only surviving because of his name, Luke Biggio!
Phillies are idiots, Kody is a good player. Phillies should have let him start a game especially with Bohm and Stott lack of hitting. No consistency, having him pitch-hit in the 8th inning or 9th inning losing 7-0 or 11-4, doesn’t help. Manager Thompson doesn’t know how to use his bench players or his bullpen. Thompson needs to go.
Roger Daddy is that you. Shouldn’t throw things at Piazza feet you nutjob
Nepo babee
Maybe he should have learnt to be a pitcher like his dad. Even his AAA numbers aren’t that great as a batter. I guess this is a stopgap while Keaschall is out.
He can help them in their situation. He might be replacement level with his versatility factored in. Just don’t expect him to be an everyday guy. At 29 and his AAA numbers being what they are He is what he is….
