April 7: The Yanks made it official today, announcing that Ottavino has been re-signed and added to the active roster.
April 6: The Yankees announced this evening that Ottavino has cleared waivers and elected free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to the minor leagues. SNY’s Andy Martino reported shortly thereafter that the Yankees are re-signing Ottavino. It’s unclear if it’s a major or minor league deal, but either way it appears the that the veteran will be joining the club in Detroit for tomorrow’s game against the Tigers. Southpaw Brent Headrick was optioned to the minors this evening, meaning no corresponding move will be necessary to bring Ottavino back into the fold as the 40-man roster spot created by Ottavino’s own departure has not yet been filled.
April 4: The Yankees announced this morning that they have designated right-hander Adam Ottavino for assignment. The move opens up a roster spot for closer Devin Williams, who is returning from the paternity list.
Ottavino, 39, is in his 15th season as a big league player. The veteran made his big league debut in St. Louis with 22 1/3 innings of work back in 2010 but didn’t stick consistently in the majors until 2012 as a member of the Rockies bullpen. Ottavino made a name for himself across seven seasons in Colorado as a rare pitcher who was able to post consistently above-average results despite calling Coors Field home, with a 3.41 ERA (136 ERA+) and a nearly matching 3.42 FIP across 390 2/3 innings of work in a Rockies uniform.
Since the start of the 2019 season, however, Ottavino has pitched on the east coast. The right-hander signed with the Yankees on a three-year deal in January of 2019, and in 73 appearances for the club that year he immediately made good on the deal with a sterling 1.90 ERA and a 31.1% strikeout rate. Things took a turn for the worse during the shortened 2020 season, however, as Ottavino struggled to the first below-average ERA of his career since arriving in Colorado and ultimately had his salary dumped to the Red Sox ahead of the final year of his deal. That year saw him bounce back somewhat, though his 4.21 ERA (112 ERA+) and 3.96 FIP were still that of a solid middle reliever rather than a quality set-up man.
The right-hander returned to New York in 2022, though this time he pitched in Queens rather than the Bronx. He ultimately spent three seasons with the Mets, posting a solid 3.14 ERA (128 ERA+) with a 3.66 FIP during that time. His effectiveness began to decline over the course of that time as he entered his late 30s, however, and his 3.75 ERA (111 ERA+) and 4.11 FIP in 117 2/3 innings over the past two years were far more pedestrian. After putting up a below-average 91 ERA+ in his final year with the Mets, Ottavino was unable to find a big league guarantee on the open market this winter. He pitched for the Red Sox in Spring Training this year, but was lit up to the tune of six runs in five innings of work.
Ultimately, the veteran did not make Boston’s Opening Day roster and was granted his release. That gave him the opportunity to sign with the Yankees earlier this week, though he ended up making just two appearances during this second stint in the Bronx. Overall, he threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the Yankees during his brief return to the club, with zero hits allowed and two strikeouts against two walks. Going forward, the Yankees will have one week to either work out a trade involving Ottavino or try to pass him through waivers. If he goes through waivers unclaimed, the Yankees could attempt to outright him to the minors but Ottavino has more than enough service time to reject that assignment in favor of free agency should he so choose.
Ottavino’s departure makes way for the return of Williams, who the club acquired from the Brewers in exchange for Caleb Durbin and Nestor Cortes over the offseason. The NL Rookie of the Year in 2020 and a two-time All-Star, Williams has made a name for himself as one of the best closers in the game after posting a 1.83 ERA and 2.39 FIP in 235 2/3 innings of work for the Brewers over the years. The start to his Yankees career began inauspiciously with a run allowed in his first outing, but there’s little doubt that the righty will be able to get things back on track now that he’s back with the club.
Well that was fast.
His circular path forward is clear. It’s off to the Mets or the Red Sox!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
~Mets Fans Everywhere
NYY needs to limit errors & runs allowed. Some good Pitching could help.
Other than Danny Young, their bullpen has been excellent. And he’s a lefty, so they’re not going to replace him with Ottavino
Cardinals
Come back to us Otto – doesn’t matter if you’re bad now
Exactly. If he is bad now, he will still fit right in. But he is old enough that he can still be another pitching coach in the pen. Cannot possibly be worse than Tyler Kinley or Scott Alexander.
I failed to anticipate the true circular nature of his path and that he simply would bypass the Mets or Red Sox and return directly to the Yankees.
Escalated quickly!
Guys like Ottavino, Chavez and the Festa boys shouldn’t bother unpacking their bags.
YBC – You sound like my wife ;O)
Ottavino needs to make a pit stop with the Rockies if he really wants to complete the cycle.
Honestly cards could use him
I’d rather have Otto back than Kinley or Alexander.
Should have kept him up instead of HR Derby Leiter tbh
As predicted.
He definitely has time to strike out Babe Ruth now.
Cap – Along with Ruth Ginsburg and Ruth Buzzi.
Fev- I definitely give him a fighter’s chance to do so. I like his chances.
“Along with Ruth Ginsburg..Ruth Buzzi”…Everyone knows that Ruth Ginsburg has trouble catching up to the high fastball and Ruth Buzzi has always had trouble staying off the chase slider down and away.
And maybe a shorter stay for Ottavino? Ian Hamilton is likely to be activated on Tuesday,
so Ottavino would get designated AGAIN.
Only pitchers with options are Cruz (highly unlikely to be demoted) and Warren (they need him for another start before Schmidt returns). Unless Carrasco gets cut…but they don’t have much SP depth.
Hope he lands somewhere else this season. Dude’s already racked up 0.1 WAR.
Not only was that fast, but not really worth the trouble of signing him.
They made such a big deal on the broadcast about him coming back too
After yesterday’s performance, Yarborough should be shown the door. The Yankees revolving bullpen door is officially open for business.
Jed Hoyer has entered the discussion.
Hoyer already got his dumpster diving gear on!
I just watched him pitch last night! He got out the side. Meanwhile. Ryan Yarbrough loaded the bases and gave up a grand slam. No sense at all.
Just more fascination with lefty gadget throwers in the Boone righty/lefty matchup world……
The thing that bothers me most about Aaron Boone is that he always manages for future games. For example, he didn’t put in Weaver to close out the game against the D-Backs because he wanted to preserve arms for the Carrasco game. But what good is preserving a BP arm for a future win that may not happen when you have a win in your hand…..
Same stuff every year with him.
You aren’t wrong, but if Weaver wasn’t available last night, there’s a good chance Yankees lose that game.
That is completely wrong! Boone manages to try to win as many games as possible and overuses his effective relievers. There are countless examples of him burning out pitchers because he uses them too often. It’s part of their plan to keep pitchers effective by giving them regular work. That part holds up, until it’s overdone. It’s a balance that Boone has not figured out. But neither have the previous Yankees managers.
Who are the high leverage guys in the Yankees pen after Williams and Weaver?? It’s not Al Leiter Jr. is it??
Keep in mind 4 relievers are on the IL. Ian Hamilton, Jonathan Loaisiga, Scott Effross and Jake Cousins. Hamilton will probably be back this week. JL is getting closer. Cousins is done. Effross is perpetually finding new injuries.
Him and Chavez in the same week. Yeesh
They need to put in clauses like $500k bonus if DFA-ed before the end of May and decrease $100K every month. I hope he only got a VRBO for the 3 days he was a Yankee. Yikes
Frustrating. We can’t get a righty bat but we can sign a guy for one game and cut him? With the luxury hit this cost more the 2 million. What did the one game show the Yankees that their scouts missed?
not sure why the yankees let eguy rosario pass through waivers. small sample size but so far he has destroyed lefties and can play third and second
Clearly the Yankees like their 40-man roster. If they pick up Eguy, then Peraza gets the boot.
imho peraza is a lost cause
batted ball profile is grim
should have sold high
I feel like he will be traded somewhere for cash considerations or something. He’ll get a shot
He will probably be a future braves bullpen piece.
Ottavino & robertson should easily be employed right now
Nats should try to sign him
Aoc
This more Bernie’s fault but AOC blame is ok too
Hit it & quit it….
Probably trying to get him to the minors, whether he does is another story, but he might not have many suitors.
Did the Yankees really have no one on their 40 man roster who they could have brought up for the few days that they needed someone? Or are they hoping that he doesn’t agree to go to the minors so they only need to pay him for a week of service vs. the entire season?
This move was probably premeditated by both sides and Otto agreed to fill in for a few days. Nobody knows what the contract terms are. Could be a pro-rated league min.
Agreed, there is absolutely zero chance that he is being DFAed for performance reasons. This was 100% “Would you like to fill in while Williams is on paternity leave?” So it avoids them having to add a young pitcher to the 40-man or using up an option year on someone they’d prefer to hold off on using.
Especially since Ian Hamilton is coming back soon, so Headrick is already ticketed to go back to the minors.
Could be similar to this one posted recently, I suppose.
“Brendan Rodgers’ Deal With Astros Contains Advance Consent Clause”
They had no permanent spot to offer him and I think they kind of helped him out by giving him a mini showcase. Someone will probably pick him up now seeing he still looked decent enough to get big league hitters out. Yanks have a couple of guys coming off the IL soon, so they were never keeping him long term.
Yeah, exactly that. It was always going to be a short stint just to fill in while Williams was on paternity leave, and, as you note, it could help Ottavino get a gig somewhere else, as he looked fine enough.
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE
I DEMAND TO SPEAK TO CASHMAN NOW
I MEAN NOW
Get rid of Leiter
He sucks
Exactly my thoughts.
$1M for 3 days ($2M for Yankees including luxury tax). That’s Ohtani and Taylor Swift kind of money.
MLB allows 10-day MLB contracts for 10 days or 3 games.
And to think he was once better than Babe Ruth…
Gotta make room for Devin Williams.
He’s kinda stinky.
@whyhayzee
Who is stinky? Devin Williams or Ottavino? Either way, the Yankees have them both again.
Ottavino needs to hang them up …. As a pitcher He’s garbage now.
Nothing better out there apparently.
Robertson. Although, these “athletes” need 6 yrs to either get in game condition or recover from biting their fingernails too short
So, ultimately, Adam Ottavino was DFA’d for Adam Ottavino?
Yes?
This reminds me of a time in the 60s when a guy was ultimately traded for himself (he was the player to be named later)
Harry Chiti
Hilariously, the very same thing he was signed for to begin with (to fill in briefly and then get cut when they didn’t need him anymore) is likely to happen again here, where he is going to fill in until Ian Hamilton is activated, which will be very soon.
Ottavino has to be happy, as he’ll make a little money, and get to showcase his talents for other teams, and the Yankees get a live arm after using up so much of their bullpen over the last two days.
Good to have O back. I like him. A good asset to have.
andyger63: First you ask why they dumped Headrick for him, then you say it’s good to have him back? What’s with you?
Otto is this year’s Ryan Weber.
I’m disappointed they didn’t acquire Matthew Boyd, especially considering how well he’s doing. He was a Cashman target for years, which usually means a contract at some point, whether he’s good or not.
But why shuffle Headrick, a viable lefty, for Otto? Matchups? That’s the only nonsensical Yankees logic that makes sense here.
What the hell? Headrick has been great this season. This revolving door of relievers is getting tiring.
andyger63: Tiring for whom? It doesn’t affect you.
They’re playing the Jesse Chavez game
JC, Brian Cashman needs to retire. He’s been living off 25 year-old glory for at least a decade. Terrible GM now.
This might sound crazy but why not try Ottavino in the rotation? He can give them length and has 3 to 4 pitches to use. He can’t hold runners on so you don’t want him in late innings. I would seriously consider him rather than watch Stroman close in on the 140 innings and then get the 18 million option next season which would be bad for the payroll and for the rotation. Stroman has to be dealt to a team like the marlins or As who do not spend money and need pitchers to eat innings. Yanks can send a decent prospect with him to get out of that contract.
What makes you think he can give them length?
He has been able to go 3-4 innings in the past. If they signed him to a minor league deal maybe they can ramp up his innings?
The time to try Otto as a starter was when he was 30, not at 39.
can you tell me when he has gone 3-4 innings … i looked over the last 5ish years and he never pitched more than 2 and those were in blowout games. Pitching through a lineup a 2nd time is a huge difference than first time
Stroman i can see them justifiably skipping starts once they get a little healthier in the rotation if not a 6 man and at his current pace he needs to hit 30 starts as he has not been good enough to make it to the 5th inning yet.
You’re absolutely right he’s around 1 inning maybe 2 but yes he’s 39. This is his last hoorah, maybe his arm is strong enough to build up and he tries yo convert to a starter. I know it’s highly unlikely but the Yankees need arms to eat innings and with all the injuries if they can find lightning in a bottle with a guy making league minimum and get rid of Stroman contract that would be a win win.
They have enough depth with Ian Hamilton and Johnny Lasagna coming back in a few weeks. Getting Otto to starting pitcher is not something anyone should entertain.
“He has been able to go 3-4 innings in the past.”
The distant past. Ottavino hasn’t started a game in the majors or minors in 15 years. He also hasn’t gone more than 2.0 innings in any game in 12 years. Maybe you could use him as an opener on occasion but he walks so many batters and nibbles so much that his pitch count would prevent him from going more than two innings.
Roster gymnastics or not, Ottavino is available for the series in Detroit which is now all day games. Tigers moved every game up because of wind chill and wintry weather.
Um k
Now we talking
This is the way it should be
Get rid of some of those losers like Leiter
Tigers won 6-2 versus the Yankers today. Carrasco versus Skubal tomorrow. I’m liking the odds as a Tigers fan.
