Angels Sign Chris Taylor, Option Kyren Paris

By Darragh McDonald | May 26, 2025 at 11:59pm CDT

4:19PM: The Angels officially announced Taylor’s signing, and Paris’ demotion to Triple-A.

4:00PM: The Angels are going to sign utility player Chris Taylor, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The Halos haven’t officially announced anything but Rosenthal says Taylor will be playing center field tonight when the club squares off against the Yankees, so it seems he’s jumping right onto the roster and into the lineup. The Angels have an open 40-man spot after right-hander Shaun Anderson was recently designated for assignment. Per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, outfielder Kyren Paris will be optioned as the corresponding active roster move.

Taylor, 34, spent many years as a useful player for the Dodgers. He bounced all over the diamond, stole bases and was above average at the plate as well. The Dodgers valued those contributions enough to re-sign Taylor ahead of the 2022 season, a four-year, $60MM deal. Unfortunately, Taylor’s production has dropped in recent years, which has cut into his playing time. He has been unable to climb out of his hole while stuck in a part-time gig, so the Dodgers released him just over a week ago.

The Dodgers are still on the hook for what’s left of Taylor’s $13MM salary this year, as well as the $4MM buyout on Taylor’s $12MM 2026 club option. That makes this a buy-low move for the Angels. They will only have to pay Taylor the prorated league minimum for any time he spends on the roster, with that amount subtracted from what the Dodgers pay.

The Halos are presumably hoping that getting Taylor some regular playing time will help him get back on track. From 2017 to 2021, he hit .265/.343/.461 for a 116 wRC+, stealing 50 bases over that span while playing every position except for first base and the battery. But since then, he has a .222/.307/.369 line and 90 wRC+. Last year, he dropped to a .202/.298/.300 line and 74 wRC+. He has fallen even farther so far in 2025, with a .200/.200/.257 line and 23 wRC+.

Taylor’s versatility essentially makes him a more experienced version of Paris, who has seen time as a second baseman, shortstop, center fielder, and left fielder over his three MLB seasons. Paris appeared in 36 games with the Angels over the previous two seasons, but he got a much longer look this year, getting into 43 games while mostly toggling between second base and center field.

It seemed like Paris was cementing his place as a lineup regular when he got off to a hot start, but his bat has drastically cooled off after the season’s first two weeks. Over 140 PA, Paris has struck out a whopping 59 times, and his slash line is down to .190/.266/.381 with six home runs. Some time in the minors might help Paris stabilize things at the plate, and it should be noted that Paris has only 37 career games at the Triple-A level (all in 2024). The Angels continued their habit of aggressive prospect promotions by calling Paris up for his MLB debut in 2023 before Paris had even appeared to Triple-A.

Because he might be able to get his swing back in a new lineup. The bulk of his pay comes from Dodgers either way, so giving him a shot is very cheap.

Two years of playing with one of the best lineups in baseball and he is suddenly going to get better playing with one of the bottom 10 in baseball? Sure. I guess anything is possible, no matter how far fetched.

Maybe the pressure of performing in that lineup got to him. He also I sure wad viewed as an out you have to get before getti.g back around to the big bats.

Less pressure to perform and keep his roster spot, particularly since the Dodgers acquired a younger version in Edman.

I have to agree. The money is negligible, and they know they’re getting a versatile glove and a .220 hitter, but more importantly they’re getting a clubhouse and dugout leader. They’re hovering around .500, and that could be the kind of difference they’re looking for.

Charlie III, there are currently 7 major league teams with a worse winning percentage than the Angels, one with exactly the same winning percentage as the Angels, and another (the Red Sox) whose winning percentage is .001 higher than the Angels. So, yes, signing with the Angels counts.

There are currently 7 AAAA teams out there?

        Let’s dive in.

        Red Sox: MLB team underperforming.

Orioles: MLB team with AAA pitching drastically underperforming.

White Sox: AAA team over performing.

Angels: MLB team with AAAA tendencies slightly over performing.

Rangers: MLB team underperforming due to injuries.

Athletics: MLB/AAAA team with upside, too young but could get hot again.

Braves: Good MLB team drastically underperforming.

        Nationals: AAAA team.

        Marlins: AAA team

        Pirates: AAA team with Skenes.

        Rockies: AA team.

        Look about right?

Red Sox are not under performing. Pecota projected them to come in last and they are not even close to last place. If anything they are over performing.

White Sox are not over performing. They are about where everyone expected.

Braves were off to horrible start. I wouldn’t count them out yet.

At least they realize Moore is nowhere near ready and are not rushing him up.

You know he’ll be up after the trade deadline at the latest, if not up sometime in June when the timeline passes where they’ll get another year of control. He’s already in AAA. Kavadas got promoted after like 5 games at AAA last year. Moore will be up in no time, for better or worse.

No, they will rush him. Adell was 21 and wasn’t close to ready. Schanuel was 21 and had only 74 minor league ABs. Paris was 21 and was on pace for 224 Ks/600 AB in AAA.

Moore will be up this year and average > 150 Ks/600.

Adell spent 3 seasons in the minors before being called up.

Paris spent 4 seasons in the minors before his first being called up in 2023 and 2025 is his 3rd year in the majors.

Neither were rushed, they just have not been able to live up to the expectations in the majors.

Moore hit .347/.400/.584/.984 in A+ and AA after being drafted #8 last year and is hitting . .478/.552/.652/1.204 with the AAA Bees in 2025. It’s only been 6 games, but not sure how anyone can say that he is not ready. If he continues to rake through the All Star break, I can see him being called up when Taylor continues to stink.

Neto and Schanuel came up in the year after they were drafted and did quite well.

Adell was arguably the worst player in AAA when he was promoted. He had a 43/10 K/W, with -0- HRs, and was a weak LF at the time. Those are impossibly bad numbers in the PCL.

Paris had 52 Ks in 139 ABs in AAA. His 93 Ks in 217 MLB ABs is probably exactly what his AAA stats extrapolate to.

Moore projects to 196 Ks this year in the minors. That’s probably in the neighborhood of 225 in the pros.

Adell was called up to start the 2020 season. He could have sat out the entire year because there WAS no minor leagues, or he could come of the bench in the majors.

You don’t mesure Ks vs AB, you measure it vs PA. Yes, Paris went back down to AAA in 2024 and struggled, showing just how little he needed any more time in the minors. What he needed was actual player development, which the Angels lack in the minors.

Moore is hitting .478 in Salt Lake. Will he hit that for the season? Give us all a break. He has hit .271/.357/.411/.768 with 69K in 244 PA in AA. That is what we are expecting from him along with solid defense at 2B.

Exposing a kid to MLB itching, that cannot hit AAA pitching, is not a good move, imho.

IRT to the measurement, you can measure it any way you want. I generally K/W in the pros, but for minor leaguers, I prefer K/600 since pro pitchers will issue far less walks. I seldom see a 200k/600 minor league hitter amount to anything.

You can measure strikeouts any way you want. The mistake you are making is the same mistake people made on Madrigal. Some folks assumed Madrigal would succeed based on his minor league OBP, which relied too much on his walk rate.

Pro pitchers work differently and have better control of the strike zone. A large number of strikeouts in the minors generally leads to a large number of strikeouts in the pros.

This is the same thing I told y’all about Adell.

Taylor’s weak numbers are still better than what they currently have. And yes… he will play better as a the full-time CF. Paris hit .090 last year at Double-A. Should have never made the team. He needs one or two years to refine his game. Adell is definitely running on borrowed time. The division is bad and winnable with less Ks and better bullpen production.

The team just needs to collectively stop swinging at anything out of the zone. That’s their biggest problem. The Ks are just brutal this season.

1-Ward needs to be traded to Philly before the day is out. They could use a RH OF, and Ward is on an insane streak.

2-But Ward won’t be traded until his hot streak has ended, or until he gets dinged up.

@joebrady. Ward would probably get pegged in the head and be out for the year again. I agree they need a new outfield and need to trade ward, rengifo, Anderson, kenley. To have some kind of depth in the minors.

Angels need to stop rushing their minor league prospects and drafting guys that think are closest to MLB ready. Not sure if that’s an Arte Moreno thing or Perry M

Its a Perry thing because Arte won’t allow him to sign the right players to improve the team. Paris wasn’t rushed, he just came out of the gate hard and fast this season but has glaciered. Neto was brought up quickly and has proven himself, so this whole “rushing minor leaguers” isn’t that big of a deal, especially since other teams have done it recently and nobody is calling them out on it.

Other teams don’t do it constantly. They do it when a prospect shows signs he’s ready. Even then, other teams have failures when they rush, also.

After being drafted in 2019, Paris spent 3 full seasons in the minors plus 2020, so 4 years total, before being called up for the 1st time in 2023. Then he spent most of his 5th and 6th seasons in pro ball in the minors as well as well. It was only in his 7th season in pro ball that he broke camp with the big league team. Not exactly being rushed,

He wasn’t ready for the pros. He was only 21 at the time, with -0- AAA ABs. And with 151 Ks in 451 AA ABs, it’s impossible to expect any pro success.

One could easily argue for at least one more year in AAA, probably more.

He was already in the pros. A, A+, AA, and AAA are pro ball. He had nothing to prove in the minors. As I noted below, more than half of all players go straight from AA to the majors. That is not at all unusual, In fact, almost all of the best prospect do. We have another guy, named after a fish, that went from AA to the majors.

Wood had a higher K% in AA than Paris. He seems to be doing just fine with the Nats. He also had no time in AAA.

Cam Smith had 5 games in AA before going to the majors. He is doing just fine.

Paris had plenty of time in the minors. That is the point. He just has not been able to adjust to the level of play in the majors.

That’s exactly what my point is. Wood got promoted to AAA, not to the pros. Once he mashed AAA, then he got promoted to the pros.

It’s Perry. He knows he is going to be fired without immediate results. To be fair Neto looks great but Schanuel is a light hitting 1B they took extremely high with better prospects on the board. Not a good strategy

Why? It seems to be working well. Or did you miss how well Schanuel, Neto, and Lugo are playing?

The Angels problem is that players that CAN’T make the jump stagnate in the minors due to a massive lack of player development staff and technology. If they don’t jump straight to the majors they are never going to get better.

I still remember when we drafted Zach Lee and the media said we only did it because Frank McCourt was broke and there was a good chance he wouldn’t sign and go back to school to play football.

Then they went on to give him the biggest signing bonus in Dodgers History lol.

He did adjust in the minors. He just could not do it in the majors or the Angels lack of a minor league baseball development staff hindered his growth. He was not called up early. Since 2000, 54% of all players have made it to the majors before playing in AAA. That is not at all unusual.

Again, you missed the point. Over the last 25 years 54% of all major league players didn’t play in AAA before playing in the majors. It is not a unusual thing. Most don’t play in AAA before they play in the majors. Obviously it doesn’t mean that much to a players development to play in AAA first.

I’m glad he found a team where he didn’t have to move. Dodgers fans really appreciate what he’s done while with the team. And by all accounts, he’s a great clubhouse presence.

I think the angels really need an everyday player that’s been on a winning team consistently to help them change their mindset. Yeah their roster isn’t the best. But with some tweaks on the mental side of things they could be better.

    I think Washington gets it.

Lastly, I’m glad he didn’t sign with the Padres. That would have just been weird.

Was secretly hoping the Phillies signed him to a minor league deal to fill the void at 2B & LF, when the Phillies trade Kemp and Rincones Jr. for bullpen help. RH bat, plays any position, post season hero, good veteran to have at AAA and potential September call up. Taylor will get a big league opportunity in Anaheim, sooner than later and didn’t have to worry about the logistics of moving to another part of the country. Only a matter time before the Angels trade Jo Addel and Taylor Ward. Anderson, Jansen, Detmers probably all gone too. At this point, just trade Trout to the NL or AL east and make baseball better because of it.
