While the Yankees beat the Mariners 11-5 last night, the primary focus in the aftermath of last night’s game was not on the score but on the status of infielder Oswaldo Cabrera. As noted by Greg Joyce of the New York Post, Cabrera went down while attempting to score on a sac fly due to an ankle injury, and eventually had to be loaded onto a stretcher so an ambulance could take him off the field and transport him to a local hospital. Some sort of update on Cabrera’s status will likely be made available at some point today, although it seems all but certain he’s ticketed for an extended absence.
“I think everyone understands it was a pretty serious situation,” manager Aaron Boone said of the injury, as relayed by Joyce. “Just praying for our guy Cabby tonight and hoping for the best. Trust that he’s in good hands as he goes through the night. Obviously a great game in a lot of ways, but a lot of guys feeling for their teammate, who’s the best of them.”
With Cabrera presumably out for the foreseeable future, the Yankees will need to figure out how to address an infield mix that already had questionable depth with him in the mix. Anthony Volpe and Paul Goldschmidt are both everyday players at shortstop and first base respectively, but second and third base are both major question marks. Jazz Chisholm Jr. can play one position or the other on a regular basis but is currently on the shelf with a “high-grade” oblique strain that will keep him out of commission for at least another month. The Yankees are getting DJ LeMahieu back from the injured list tomorrow, as he was already expected to rejoin the club today even prior to Cabrera’s injury.
LeMahieu was previously expected to get regular playing time at second base for the time being, but it’s possible that Cabrera’s injury shifts that expectation. While he hit just .204/.269/.259 in his age-35 campaign last year, LeMahieu offers a lengthy track record as an average-or-better hitter in the majors and hit quite well during his rehab assignment at the minor league level. That’s likely enough to make him the Yankees’ top infielder after Volpe and Goldschmidt due to the slim pickings.
Jorbit Vivas is currently holding things down at second base but has hit just .158/.304/.211 in ten games at the position. Pablo Reyes and Oswald Peraza are both on the roster as well, but Reyes is hitting an even more lackluster .174/.240/.174. Peraza has slashed only a slightly more more respectable .204/.278/.388 in 54 plate appearances this year, and could be platooned with the lefty-swinging Vivas at whichever position LeMahieu doesn’t play.
Outside of the players currently in the active roster mix, the depth is lacking. Braden Shewmake offers a left-handed alternative to Vivas and is already on the 40-man roster, but he’s hitting just .197 with a 94 wRC+ at Triple-A this year. Andrew Velazquez and Max Burt are both in the organization as potential upper-level depth options, but Velazquez has never hit much in either the majors or minors while Burt has just 47 games at Triple-A under his belt as a 28-year-old. Perhaps the Yankees could look for an external addition to their infield, but any players available at this point in the calendar would likely be relatively low-impact options.
It looked ugly for sure. Hoping for a speedy recovery for the guy.
For Boone to actually admit it isn’t good is very troubling.
The ankle is not something you want to injure. Especially an athlete. I had a neighbor many years ago who worked as a salesman. Broke his ankle. Messed it up terribly. I forget how long he was on crutches but he couldn’t even go back to sales. He could only stay on his feet for maybe an hour a day.
let – Remember Allen Craig? Ankle injury ended his career.
All due respect to Cabrera, but I watched that slide/tag, etc. multiple multiple times and I can’t see exactly what went wrong- did he like, pull his entire side on the ground when he slid?
Like, it looked like/sounded like he basically pulled every muscle on the ground side of his slide, but otherwise… I know they kept saying it was his leg and it was too injured/painful for him to move and they were *very* careful when moving him onto a stretcher, so… what exactly happened?
His left foot was twisted the wrong way when he landed. He probably shredded every ligament in his ankle or has a compound fracture of the tibia.
The replay shows his left foot, when he planted it to stop running past the catcher, gets “stuck” in the dirt. No doubt his cleat held it in place but his momentum carried him forward and you can see the ankle severely turn over…so it’s obviously broken.
But the fact that they wouldn’t allow him to move and they placed an air cast on his lower leg means something more also happened. Most likely his left knee also tore the ACL (or MCL) or perhaps his lower leg bone was also broken?
Either way, it was an ugly play and you could tell on his teammates’ faces that it was bad and he’s definitely done for the season…if not longer.
None of those would require EMS transport, though. In all likelihood they *suspected* something more emergent like compartment syndrome or the like, which is extraordinarily painful & requires emergency surgery. Just an idea though, & doesn’t mean he actually had a serious condition just that they suspected it.
Unfortunately, with multiple serious injuries involved with his ankle, MCL etc., he could be looking at even more than a season ending injury. Extremely unfortunate!
Ankle
Vaughn Grissom to the Yankees for Goldie, win-win.
Make it happen Cashman!
DJ is coming off the IL today and his best position is now open….
dirt – DJ is almost 37, he’s too old for middle infield. Jazz should take over 2B when he returns.
So 3B is what opened btw
That’s the dumbest trade comment I’ve read today……hope that’s just made to get a laugh……
rocky – Why is it dumb?
Grissom plays SS and 2B, he’s only 24, he’s got 4 years of team control remaining, and he hits well.
Goldie is a free agent after this season, Sox need a first baseman only for this season who hits righthanded.
I get that rivals don’t usually like to make trades with each other, but logically it’s a perfect fit for both teams. .
Because they gave away Sale for him and will look like idiots.
Max – I totally agree the Sale trade was horrific, but Grissom can’t rebuild his value with the Red Sox because their middle infield is jam packed. No way Grissom will play middle infield over Campbell, Mayer or Story.
They have to trade Grissom this year, if he brings back Goldie at least they can say he brought back a much needed first baseman who has had a good start to the season.
Because Goldie has been performing at a high level and yankees can’t afford to open another hole offensively. Yankees already have light hitting cost controlled infielders.
puddles – With all due respect, nobody expects Goldie to maintain a 155 OPS+ at age 37 after coming off a 98 OPS+ season. We are talking 41 games here.
He has a .411 BABIP for God’s sake.
Red Sox and Yankees trade for anything significant is just dumb.
Come on man….you can’t trade a guy in Goldy who’s going to bang 20+ Homer’s, playa near GG 1st base and anchor the righty hitting side of the lineup for a kid who’s greatest attributes are he’s 24 and has 4 years of team control…plenty of SS…2nd base guys around that are better options…would you trade with Boston and have Goldy kill the Yankees in their head to head games
…that’s why it’s dumb
..
“Grissom… hits well.”
In what world?
my – In the world of statistics …… .792 OPS and 119 OPS+ in his first MLB season.
How many other players can say the same?
I think you’re overvaluing 140ish PA. Plenty of guys come out of the gates hot then fall off once MLB teams learn how to pitch to them. Grissom is a post-hype prospect at this point; nobody is trading for a guy who struggles with major league velo and can’t field for beans in a 1 for 1 deal for a productive MLB starter–even an aging one who is playing above his expected production levels.
The Yankees are in it to win it, not sure why they would want to make their on-field MLB team worse.
It’s early.
Fan – Exactly, 41 games is meaningless.
Nah, but you can have Dominic Smith back for Grissom.
Dog – You are severely overvaluing Dom Smith, you probably don’t even realize he’s on a minor league deal. Every team could have signed him this spring for the minimum, only the Yankees did.
And he’s almost 30, it’s not like he’s expected to get better over time. Minor leaguers in their 30’s are generally worthless.
Smith is still better than Grissom. Grissom can’t field well at any position and can’t hit a major league fastball.
rmull – I guarantee Grissom will be traded for a player with value.
Dom Smith will never be. He’s been released 4 times in the last 14 months, and he’s been with 6 organizations in the last 18 months. And again, he’s almost 30. Sorry to say he’s basically done.
@Fever I’m not “overvaluing” Smith…I know he’s just a filler ballplayer at this point, and yeah, I’m aware the Yankees cut him at the end of ST and he resigned with them on a minors deal. But he’s still the equivalent of Grissom at this point…who you’re overvaluing.
I’m also aware that you’re just scat-posting by attempting to justify Goldschmidt being worth Grissom. So I’ll just throw this back at ya…too bad the Sawx don’t have a player currently on their roster that can fill in at 1b for Cassas. Someone overweight, ill-tempered, selfish and not a good fielder at any other position.
Other than Arenado, the Cardinals have a young player in Nolan Gorman who plays 2nd and 3rd. He’s around 24. Displayed Home run power 2 seasons ago. He needs a change in scenery and could be just the type of player the Yankees need to help fortify their infield.
@Fever Pitch Guy
After 31 games, the guy is a 28 wRC+ and a negative 14 OAA? Guy should be at single-A right now. Boston is a pretty garbage time team right now. None of their players are worth trading for. Maybe a bowl of New England clam chowder and some Lobster rolls for Goldie?
York – Maybe I’m blind, but where is wRC+ on BR? I always look for it but can never find it.
I use FG for defensive metrics and they have him at -1 OAA and last year he was at zero OAA. Still an improvement over Casas at -2 this year and -2 last year.
@Fever Pitch Guy
I like using FG more than BR so that’s where the wRC+ is found.
fangraphs.com/players/vaughn-grissom/26031/stats?p…
For defense, I like looking at BaseballSavant:
baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/vaughn-grisso…
For his career, he’s -14 OAA. He’s like Devers on defense but at least Devers can hit the ball. Sorry, I should have been clear about the -14 as a career number. Doesn’t look like he played the field in 2025, though. Either way, he’s not a good fielder.
@Old York- You’re looking at Grissom’s 2024 season. He hasn’t appeared in the majors this season.
@myaccount2
Oh, shoot, looking at the wrong section. I apologize for the misunderstanding. But I don’t think it’s a great idea to trade a guy who’s been producing at a 54% above league average for a guy who hasn’t shown he can make it at the MLB level and isn’t a great fielder.
Oh, 100%. Your point stands. There is a reason Red Sox fans are so willing to part with Grissom! I just wanted to clarify, though. He’s hitting .260/.338/.397 in AAA, so not exactly lighting it up.
@myaccount2
In Triple-A, he’s posting a 101 wRC+, so slightly above league average. for Triple-A. In the main stats page of Fangraphs for him, click on Minor Leagues for that information.
fangraphs.com/players/vaughn-grissom/26031/stats?p…
@Fever – Vaughn Grissom? You spelled Kristian Campbell wrong. LOL
Fernando – Oh sure they’ll give 6 years of Campbell for a half year of 38-year-old Goldie …. do you want the Sox to throw in Anthony and Mayer too? LOL!!
@FPG – That trade is not happening in any universe. The Yankees are in it to win it, and while, sure – Goldy is not going to hit at this level he is a solid contributor even at a reduced projection.
So you propose that they take away a class act / team leader and middle of the order bat and trade him for a failing prospect that doesn’t field well enough anywhere and whose bat is iffy at best at the major league level unless he makes a big leap in the next year or two.
Take off the Red Sox colored glasses. Frankly even if the Yankees were already out of contention, they can get more for Goldy than Grissom at his current value (which is at failed prospect in two places / lottery ticket throw-in status).
Carver – I already acknowledged the two rivals likely wouldn’t trade with each other, especially right after the Yankees got fleeced of Fitts and Narvaez, but I’m looking at it from strictly a need and value view.
Yes Goldie is a solid contributor this year, the Sox wouldn’t want him if he wasn’t ….. and they certainly wouldn’t trade Grissom for him if he wasn’t..
It’s really simple, Goldie would be a more immediate ROI while Grissom would be a more longer term ROI.
Sorry but you wanting to cling to a half year of Goldie instead of 4 1/2 years of Grissom is evidence of rose colored glasses.
Grissom isn’t in the minors because he’s bad, he’s in the minors because the Red Sox have two top prospects (Campbell and Mayer) and an expensive veteran shortstop (Story) ahead of him on the depth chart.
Grissom is only 24, he proved to be a plus hitter by age 22. There’s no reason to believe he won’t get even better with playing time in the majors.
@FPG – Again, you fail to see the obvious. Teams that are strong contenders in a given year simply do not trade key parts of the current team for lottery tickets that will almost assuredly not help them win in that season. Not unless they know that they can do without without a step backwards – in essence, they have a better replacement in-house already that is ready to step into those shoes. (think of a young Ryan Howard that had already torn up the minors, with Jim Thome sitting at first and no DH spot available). While Thome was not traded that season but injured and then traded if memory serves, the analogy applies.
I have now seen enough of your “thought process” to see how you operate on here (troll-like tendencies) so I will refrain from replying to you from now on. You share the misconception with many others on here that volume is a satisfactory substitute for intellect and perspective.
Carver – Why do you think there’s no possibility Grissom replacing Cabrera would not help this season? You are making baseless assumptions again.
When Grissom returned from injury/illness last September he batted .333 with a .787 OPS and played solid defense. But you wouldn’t know that because you don’t have the knowledge or the desire to research before digging in your heels with inaccurate assumptions.
BTW the epitome of a “troll” is somebody who constantly posts negative illogical statements without ever backing it up with stats or facts. And that’s PRECISELY what you are doing here.
I’ve brought plenty of stats, facts and logic to the table here while you’ve chosen to resort to personal attacks instead of engaging in critical thinking and genuine discussion.
Anyone who rushes to pull out the “troll card” when they are proven wrong is not worthy of my time or effort.
@FPG – Have a nice day and good luck with your Red Sox. ; )
Somehow this happens and with our luck Grissom turns into an all-star in NY xD
Meow – It could happen.
But if it also happens to Narvaez or Fitts, we could just call it even ;O)
I’m praying that Fitts becomes at least an Eduardo Rodriguez sort of success story, just to reduce the retroactive sting of the Betts trade (and to have fleeced NY of course).
Meow – I’m really high on Fitts, have been since last summer. Great makeup and composure, very good at stepping up in tough situations.
I’m hoping he returns soon, as I think Houck will be demoted soon to the pen or maybe even to AAA for a while.
Houck definitely needs some sort of change for a bit. Buddy from Detroit was texting me during the game last night asking what happened to him x_x
“Just praying for our guy.” “Trust that he’s in good hands as he goes through the night.” Dramatic much?
Like… it’s an ankle injury? Obviously they’re hoping he’s not out for the bulk of the year from this, but it’s not like he took a ball to the head. From the way Boone discussed it you’d think there’s a chance he doesn’t make it out.
Well that’s a crazy take on the injury.
You never know what could happen inside his ankle/leg with all the veins and stuff (full disclosure: I’m not a doctor). QB Alex Smith almost had to have his leg amputated from a gruesome leg injury.
Plus the mental anguish, after working so hard to make the majors, he has to be wondering if he’ll ever make it back.
There’s a good chance his career could be over. They aren’t being dramatic at all.
I just had to reread the article a couple times after reading Boone’s quite because I thought I must have missed a detail.
I think the articles written about the injury just don’t convey what we witnessed live.. At this point, you just hope he’s all in one piece and doesn’t have to amputate. The baseball is secondary..
Boone knows how to toss up and prepare Michelin-star quality word salads here and there, so I don’t blame you.
mullig – Very true, we all remember Allen Craig.
Many, many careers in all sports have ended because of ankle injuries. The fact that they brought its the meat wagon makes me fear that he suffered a compound fracture. I fear that we have seen the last of poor Oswaldo, a player who has been easy to root for. I will be very happy to be wrong.
Very tough break for a guy who is loved by his teammates. He’s stretched as a starter but a useful player. There was talk of working on some other positions with Rice before this happened, now it seems critical. DJ and Peraza will hold down 3rd but it’s only a matter of time until DJ is writhing on the ground with his latest leg/foot injury.
jersey – That’s why DJ at first base makes the most sense, much less risk of injury there.
Fever: Goldschmidt is on 1st and Rice can play there also. The big problem with DJ is he doesn’t hit enough to DH or play 1st but those are safest for him. Chuck him at 3rd or 2nd and wait for an injury or ineffectivness to remove him.
jersey – Exactly!
And also Goldie’s Hard Hit Rate is only 38.6% which is well below his 49.7% from 2021-2024.
I don’t like to use the “lucky” label very often, but most definitely Goldie has been quite lucky and his numbers are highly likely to regress.
Fever: Agreed regression is likely on his Ba in particular. He’s replacing a black hole of suck so even with some regression he’s been a positive. They can always platoon him with Rice if it gets ugly.
Learn how to slide.
Rangers are loaded with infield depth.
It’s not dramatic. You don’t know the extent of the injury. Also, this guy is probably done for the year and again, depending on the extent of it, his career could be in jeopardy. He hasn’t made millions of dollars, so Boone isn’t wrong in what he said.
Probably done for the season?
It’s weird to see so dismissive reactions to this. Hard-working guy trying to score, stretchered off and taken to a hospital. That’s not good.. That’s the whole story until more is given to the public.
I hate to see this. Part time player who gets a chance to play Major League Baseball. Now? Who knows when he’ll be back.
Get well soon, Oswaldo. You hate to see a true team player who gives 110% have this happen to them.
You can’t give 110%, it’s mathematically impossible. If you try, something breaks.
I feel so bad for Cabbie
Gage Workman is available. LOL
Pablo Reyes has a career 100 wRC+ vs LHP. Peraza is 90 wRC+ vs RHP. They can platoon 2B for the time being with DJL at 3B.
But this team needs to make a move for someone that can play 2B/3B.
I don’t anticipate a move until the ASB, but I do anticipate the Yankees trying to make their best platoon possible at 2B.
