The Tigers announced right-hander Casey Mize is being placed on the 15-day injured list due to a strained left hamstring. Right-hander Chase Lee is being recalled from Triple-A Toledo to replace Mize on the roster. As noted by Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, manager A.J. Hinch told reporters that the strain was “very mild.” Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic adds that the issue initially cropped up during his last start against the Rockies, but that it was initially believed to be dehydration.
Given the mild nature of the issue, it’s reasonable to think that a reasonably quick recovery could be on the table for Mize. With that said, Petzold points out that Mize has had issues with his left hamstring before and ultimately ended up missing two months due to the issue last season. Given that previous injury history, it would hardly be a surprise if the Tigers ended up being cautious with Mize’s hamstring. He’ll miss at least the next two weeks due to the issue in any case, but even mild hamstring strains can leave pitchers away from the big league mound for a month or longer.
Losing a pitcher from the starting rotation is always worrisome, but it’s especially disappointing for Mize and the Tigers given the former first-overall pick’s strong start to the 2025 campaign. After throwing just 112 1/3 innings from 2022 to 2024 due to a number of injuries and struggling to a middling 4.57 ERA even when healthy enough to pitch, Mize entered the 2025 season without any assurances of a starting role. He managed to make the club’s Opening Day rotation despite that, however, and has looked excellent in seven starts this year with a sparkling 2.53 ERA across 42 2/3 innings of work. That level of dominance isn’t quite supported by the advanced metrics, as Mize is striking out just 21.0% of his opponents with a 3.93 FIP and 3.81 SIERA, but even those less impressive numbers would be a big step forward for the right-hander if carried forward across a full season.
Now that Mize’s attempts to put together a quality season in the middle of the Tigers rotation are on hold for the time being, Detroit will need to find a way to replace his production in the rotation. Mize was next slated to start for the Tigers on May 13, so a decision won’t be necessary for another few days. Right-hander Alex Cobb threw a live, two-inning bullpen session yesterday that lasted 30 pitches, but isn’t expected to be ready to return from hip inflammation until later this month. Matt Manning and Keider Montero are both on the 40-man roster with starting experience in the majors; Montero’s last start was the same day as Mize’s start against Colorado, while Manning’s came the day prior. That means either righty would be on full rest and able to take the ball if necessary. If the Tigers don’t want to turn to either Montero or Manning as a starter, they’ll likely be left forced to go with a bullpen game against the Red Sox this week.
Fortunately for the Tigers, they’ve gotten generally strong production from the rest of their rotation this year that should help them weather the loss of Mize. Tarik Skubal looks every bit like the reigning AL Cy Young award winner after winning the pitching triple crown last year, Reese Olson has built on an excellent 2024 season with strong numbers again this year, and Jack Flaherty has looked solid even if he isn’t quite as dominant now as he was in his first stint in a Tigers uniform last year. The only slot in the rotation that’s currently providing the club below-average production is that of top prospect Jackson Jobe, but even he had a solid 3.38 ERA before he was torched for six runs in 3 2/3 innings at Coors Field during his last start. As for Lee, the 26-year-old righty made his big league debut with Detroit earlier this year and pitched to a 1.42 ERA in six appearances with six strikeouts against three walks.
Ah summabich. Dudes been lights out this season
Can’t believe the Tigers might actually be the AL #1 seed this year. The league is on notice for sure.
The division still goes through Cleveland.
Dream on.
This isn’t 3rd grade. Until another team displaces last year’s division winner – Cleveland – the road goes through them. Deal with it.
Cleveland isn’t in first place this year are they?
Well Cleveland is 3 games back…so until they are in 1st again its all moot….because last years results don’t mean anything. Winning a division one yr doesnt mean you can pretend like they are in first the next
Windowpane Warrior. That’s tough talk bro.
(Chuckle) Tiger fans all teenage giddy on May 10th. Pssst! Guys, umm, nobody is awarded a division title in early May. Let’s see how Detroit is doing at the AS break. But you all go on and puff out your chests like you won something already if it makes you feel good. I’m all for people feeling good. But I suspect by the end of September Cleveland will have you in their review mirror, just like last season.
You’re correct that no team wins the division in May. Teams can lose the division in May though.
Cleveland starting pitching is what will kill them, although I will admit they always seems to find another young guy who steps up. KC and Detroit have superior starters and the Tigers have the best depth there. Pitching wins. The Tigers have the best balance of offence/pitching in the AL right now. Cleveland is getting some decent production from young guys like Manzardo but others like Noel and Jones are dragging them down.
One positive note fir all of us is that the AL Central has three playoff caliber teams again and Minnesota has been inching forward too.
Window, As a Tigers fan, I agree. Especially when it looks like, at least so far, both Cleveland and Kansas City will be just as good as they were last season. Twins could go either way. 10 under 500 or 10 over. Health, as usual, will be the key for everyone.
I was such a big fan of his coming out of Auburn. Injuries and inconsistency has hurt his career so far. Still time for him
Hi velo picked up to 95-97 and the splitter is back. He added a slurve to the mix this year. He gets quick weak contact and is underrated because of his average strikeout rates. Who needs Ks when you induce weak dribblers and popups?
Agreed. ERA is reality and actual accomplishment. FIP and Sierra are underlying nonsense. Someday, these statisticians will find that getting an out on one pitch is more effective than 3 or more. There are certain times a strikeout has its merit, but these formulas over value them. Most ab’s come with the bases empty. Strikeouts don’t add extra value in those situations, unless you’re in a fantasy league.
Brant Hurter?
Not stretched out to 5+ innings. He could be part of “pitching chaos” if they lose more starters.
Hurter seems to be part of the Tigers’ bullpen plans.
Well there’s a good chance there will be a bullpen game on Tues for Mize’s spot and Hurter will start it.
Could be a BP game for the next turn through the rotation, but I suspect it’ll be Montero until either Mize or Cobb come back. I actually had a feeling, with the SP depth, that this would happen. A light “injury” simply because of the depth. The luxury of conserving the innings. I just thought it wasn’t happening until Cobb was ready. I can see Mize and Cobb coming back around the same time and replacing Montero and Jobe, to watch his innings even if he isn’t struggling, here in a few weeks.
We all knew it was a matter of time before a starting pitcher got hurt. Montero looked good in his last start, maybe he can finally find some consistency.
Agree. Montero not Manning.
I agree, Manning has been pitching in relief lately anyway.
Montero looks like a keeper in the Tigers rotation.
I think it’ll be Montero myself. I suspected this would happen (a fluky, minor injury), just not until Cobb was ready. Because of the depth, they can watch the innings. I can see Mize and Cobb coming back in 2-3 weeks and replacing Montero and Jobe, when the time comes. Just to watch Jobe’s innings.
It’ll be Montero for now. Doubt Cobb will be ready before Mize returns.
Mize is now down. Hopefully just misses a couple starts, but what if it goes a month? Flaherty is not pitching g anything like last year. Giving up gopher balls left and right. Jobe got lit up the other day by Colorado, even as the Tigers came back to win.
Skubal and Olsen are solid.
Montero has to step up.
The Tigers might get Vierling back in a week or two. I’m not counting on Meadows until June if then.
Will Alex Cobb pitch and if so how well and how long?
A long way to go. Tigers can’t afford to go into a swoon. The division is the best in MLB right now
Cobb barely pitched 20 innings last season including the playoffs. I’m not expecting to get more than that out of him this season.
A million dollars/inning pitched. Maybe, $250k per out?
Good work if you can find it.
Trade for Helsley and Ozuna. Get Parker and Vierling back, and Mize and Cobb healthy.
95 wins right there
They are on pace for 95+ wins without those guys.
Until last night’s loss, the Tigers were on a pace to win 108 games.
Which would be more wins than the 1984 team I believe. I doubt they keep up that pace but it would be great if they did.
St Louis would want too much for a rental closer and Atlanta has their own plans to compete. They wouldn’t come off Ozuna and Detroit doesn’t need another DH anyway. A month ago, I was thinking maybe someone like Brian Reynolds of Pittsburgh, but not sure now. He’s not off to a very good start considering everyone wants an arm and a leg for basically anyone on their roster.
The only spot they really could consider an upgrade is 3B and even then I’m not sure they need to. Some articles are talking about Devers but I don’t know that you would want to chance it and upset the chemistry they have right not, if he is not a team player like some suggest. I guess things could change around the trade deadline though.
Devers might upset the chemistry, but he is also the worst defensive third baseman in baseball! Even if the chemistry was fine with him he would hurt the defense for sure!!!
I actually thought something like this would happen, but not until Cobb was ready. Which is a good problem to have, obviously. Now, I assume it’ll be Montero for now at least.
