Red Sox Place Hunter Dobbins On 15-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | June 22, 2025 at 7:45pm CDT

7:45PM: Dobbins didn’t receive an MRI, as he downplayed the seriousness of the elbow strain when speaking with reporters (including the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey).  “Just some tightness that we’ve been grinding through for a little bit.  It hasn’t been bouncing back how we would like, so [we’re] just trying to give it a couple for weeks,” Dobbins said, noting that his elbow soreness increased in his last start and didn’t get better in the subsequent days.  Regardless, Dobbins said he expects to resume throwing bullpen sessions in “a couple of days.”

3:34PM: The Red Sox announced that right-hander Hunter Dobbins has been placed on the club’s 15-day injured list due to right elbow strain.  Righty Richard Fitts was called up from Triple-A in the corresponding move.

The placement is retroactive to June 21, a day after Dobbins allowed four earned runs on five walks and four hits over a four-inning start against the Giants.  It is fair to guess that Dobbins’ elbow issue impacted his performance, as he was throwing with less velocity than usual and his control was uncharacteristically off — the rookie had issued just 11 walks over his previous 55 1/3 innings and 11 games prior to Friday’s struggles.

Multiple injuries in Boston’s rotation opened the door for Dobbins to make his MLB debut this season, and (Friday’s start notwithstanding) he has made a solid showing for himself in his first taste of the majors.  Dobbins has a 4.10 ERA over 59 1/3 frames, with an above-average 47.1% grounder rate and 6.5% walk rate, though he doesn’t miss many bats with a modest 17.3% strikeout rate.

An eighth-round pick for the Red Sox in the 2021 draft, Dobbins would likely have been selected earlier had his junior year at Texas Tech not been wiped out by a Tommy John surgery.  That past procedure adds a bit of extra weight to another elbow-related injury for Dobbins, though the severity of the strain isn’t yet known.

Fitts has made five starts for the Sox this year and will at least the short-term replacement for Dobbins in the rotation.  Tanner Houck is on a Triple-A rehab assignment but is expected to make at least two more minor league appearances before returning from the injured list, so Fitts will have to hold down the fort until Houck is ready.  That might also roughly line up with a potential return date for Dobbins, though one would imagine that even a minor elbow sprain would keep him out beyond the minimum 15 days just for precautionary reasons.

I bet a human didn’t even tell Fitts to head to Frisco, it was probably a chatbot – the official method of communication (when they choose to communicate) of the Boston Red Sox!

YBC – Did you catch what Pedro recently said about the Yankees?

“The thing that impresses me the most is how the Yankees present themselves. The culture that they have. It’s a presence unlike anybody else. It must be the pinstripes,”

The timing is interesting. Sure seems like he’s taking a backhand swipe at the Red Sox for the way they do business and treat their players/employees.

I do respect how the Yankees continue to have only two uniforms, unlike the Red Sox who have SIX different uniforms including two clownish-looking ones. I can’t decide which is worse, the Athletics-looking green & yellow or the marathon finish line looking blue & yellow.

People say the y lost the trades of Betts and Devers.Ok.I can agree. The Verdugo trade that brought in Fitts and Weissert and the other guy was a win for the Sox.If Fitts and Dobbins keep it up Buehler and Giolito could be leaving in the offseason.

Bueller and Giolito are guaranteed to leave this off-season 100%. They might even leave at the trade deadline this year.

Gary – Hold up there friend …. I know I may be overly optimistic again, but this 10-5 stretch against the Yanks, Rays, Giants and Mariners along with the crappy play of the Twins, Angels, Rangers, Royals, Mariners, Cleveland, Toronto and the Yankees has pretty much guaranteed the Red Sox will be in the playoff chase at the trade deadline.

Right now there are 7 AL teams that are between 2 games over and 3 games under .500 so literally half the league is simply mediocre.

Red Sox will not be sellers at the trade deadline, they may trade Buehler (no loss) but not Gio who has been pitching rather well.

Isn’t Lucas Giolito‘s contract up at the end of the year? I don’t think they re-sign him.

Yes, he’s pitching great and he’ll become too expensive for the Red Sox who have plenty of young guys to plug in the rotation next season.

Gary – No it’s not up at the end of the year.

If he pitches less than 140 innings, Sox have a $14M club option. If he pitches more than 140, it’s a mutual $19M option with a $1.5M buyout.

What’s really interesting is he’s on pace for ….. 142 innings.

I think if he falls short of the 140 and has an ERA under 4.50 they pick up the club option.

Who are the young guys for next season? You know Penrod and Priester are gone.

So it will be Crochet, Bello, Fitts, Crawford and maybe Houck, Dobbins or Harrison.

Realistically only 2-3 of those guys can be relied on.

He’ll unfortunately have another couple of starts where he can’t get out of the second inning so that’ll help keep the option controllable

Maybe it’s just me but it seems like every 3rd or 4th start is a clunker with him. If they want to keep him they’ll find a way to manipulate his innings count

Wow, I didn’t realize there was the possibility of the third year. But it rings a bell now that you give the specifics.

Well good for the Red Sox then. As long as he continues to pitch as he has.

Rsox – His stinkers were June 4th, May 17th and May 6th …. i think rust could be attributed to most of them. Keep in mind he missed basically all of ST and April.

I totally agree with you on the innings manipulation, especially if he gets his ERA under 4.

Because as we both know, mutual options are almost never picked up.

As for the Buehler signing, I hated it from Day One.

Boston – Not even Kristian Campbell is aligned with the vicious false leaks about Raffy getting upset at him.

“We were always cool. He is an extremely great friend, extremely great person.” – Kristian Campbell.

And from Cora: “Not only was Raffy never upset with Kristian, I was the one who asked Kristian to learn first base.”

Juan Soto is probably laughing his butt off thinking about the BS Ortiz threw at him last offseason when trying to recruit him.

They are probably selling a few less Red Sox jerseys in the DR these days ….

Dobbins is injured. An injured player is replaced by another player on the 40 man.

Are you saying players getting injured should not be replaced on the roster?

No. I probably should not have said it here, because it’s not really their fault they get injured. I just personally feel like the revolving door of starters really hasn’t been helpful, but again, who can you blame? It just adds to all the inconsistencies Cora has created with this team. I feel these inconsistencies have hurt us to the point we can’t win games
