June 29: Stroman has officially been activated by the Yankees, per a team announcement.
June 28: The Yankees are planning to activate right-hander Marcus Stroman to start Sunday’s game against the Athletics, as manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including Larry Fleisher of the Associated Press) last night. Stroman has been on the 15-day injured list since mid-April due to a knee injury. As Stroman has remained on the 40-man roster and right-hander Allan Winans was optioned to Triple-A following the club’s game this afternoon, no additional corresponding moves will be necessary to activate Stroman tomorrow.
Stroman, 34, signed with the Yankees on a two-year guarantee that came with a third year vesting option prior to the 2024 campaign. Coming off a three-year run with the Mets and Cubs where he pitched to a 3.45 ERA (120 ERA+) with a 3.60 FIP and earned the second All-Star appearance of his career, Stroman seemed like a solid mid-rotation veteran addition for the Bronx Bombers when he signed for $37MM guaranteed. Unfortunately, his work last year wound up being fairly pedestrian. His 154 2/3 innings of work was good for his highest figure since 2021, but he surrendered a pedestrian 4.31 ERA (95 ERA+) and paired it with lackluster peripherals. He struck out a career-low 16.7% of his opponents, an 8.9% walk rate nearly matched his career high, and he generated ground balls at a clip below 50% (49.2%) for the first time in his career.
All those red flags led the Yankees to try and shed Stroman’s salary this offseason, but they quickly found themselves unable to do so. That led to the possibility of Stroman starting the season in the club’s bullpen after they signed Max Fried earlier in the winter, something Stroman seemed to push back against upon arriving in camp for Spring Training. Injuries to Luis Gil and Gerrit Cole quickly opened a path to a rotation job for the veteran, but he struggled badly in three starts with 12 runs allowed in 9 1/3 innings prior to his placement on the shelf. Now ten weeks removed from his last big league action, Stroman is ticketed for another shot at a rotation job in New York.
It’s unclear how long Stroman will have the opportunity to keep making starts. Cole will miss the entire 2025 season and as such won’t be a consideration, but both Gil and Ryan Yarbrough are expected back from the injured list this year and could be ahead of Stroman on the rotation totem pole unless he manages to turn his season around. What’s more, the trade deadline is just over a month away and it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Yankees look to make an addition to their starting staff after they’ve dealt with so many injuries in the rotation all throughout the season. That could make Stroman’s first few starts off the injured list crucial if he wants to remain a starter, although he has seemed more open to a role change in the months since he declared himself a starter back in February.
Making room for Stroman on the active roster figures to be Winans, who surrendered three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out two in today’s 7-0 loss to the Athletics. It was his second outing of the year for the big league Yankees after allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings of work during a start earlier this week. He’s now set to head back to Triple-A, where he had been dominating to the tune of a 0.90 ERA in 50 frames. Winans figures to be leaned on again in the future if the Yankees are in need of a spot starter or long relief option out of the bullpen.
A 7-0 wipe-out to a team below .400, news of Stroman’s return….you just can’t beat this for excitement.
Real excitement is an edition of LOLmets that leads to a players-only meeting immediately afterward.
He was still a Yankee?
please no
PLEASE, no!
Don’t worry, he’ll probably be pulled from the game after 3 innings, 75+ pitches and giving up at least 4 earned runs.
Stroman’s pitching line: 5 innings, 1 run, 3 hits, 2 walks, 1 strikeout. Pulled after 5 cos he was up to 95 pitches.
The leash better be short. Cam Schlitter is ripping it up in AAA and Brubaker is semi stretched out. Stroman seems like he hit the wall hard.
Blake has said Schlittler won’t be up any time soon.
have there been any updates on gil’s timeline?
dasit: Gil hasn’t done a rehab start but supposed to be soon. Barring setbacks looking like early August.
thanks! curious to see which version of him they get
@Joe – Assume they don’t want to burn an option for Schlitter this year. That’s fine as long as Gil & Yarborough return when expected. There’s also Winans and Brubaker in a pinch.
Schlitter is Rule 5 eligible this off-season and adding him to 40 man roster at that time is an easy decision.
Joe: Not saying you’re lying but when did Blake say that? Axisa was just pumping Schlitter as a possible MLB option right now. I follow the Yanks affiliates and his progression and the gains on his fastball make him seem ready. He’s hitting 99 these days with nice secondaries.
Sorry it took a while to get back to you jerseyjohn.
From an article on The Athletic a couple of days ago: “Blake said Yankees fans will “probably not” see Schlittler in the big leagues in the “real near term.””
Most likely they don’t want to start 40 man clock on him until they’re certain he’s ready.
Thanks for the info Joe. I concede there’s no “lane” for him right now. But if a couple dudes go down he’s gotta be a consideration.
For everyone saying he’s trade bait… maybe. Supposedly the brass love him and he’s not in their usual pump and dump category of pitchers. The feeling is he’s only getting moved in a big deal not something small. The Yankees have done a masterful job of turning out mid/back rotation prospects and flipping them. The recent returns haven’t been great but there’s always a nice group of B starter prospects to trade.
Schlitter has likely been promised to another team in an upcoming trade.
Schlitter is the Yankees best trade chip. I can’t see them calling him up and risk diminishing his value
Brubaker is in danger of being DFA’d. Came in after Stroman, gave up 4 runs in 1/3 of an inning. Loaisiga had to put out the fire.
Chucky: Above you’re giving Stroman’s stat line and here you’re ready to DFA Brubaker. Between them they have 3 appearances since being on the IL. This version of Stroman is the best case and I hope he can keep it up, 5 and fly is workable. Brubaker should get more looks after not pitching for multiple years. Let’s let the situation breathe for a few weeks…
@jerseyjohn I totally agree with you on Brubaker. He last pitched for the Pirates at the MLB level 2-3 years ago before going through TJ surgery. Guy had a ton of potential at that time. I am still rooting for him and he might turn out to be the Yankees dark horse down the stretch. With a beat up rotation, Brubraker could find himself in the rotation IF his arm can handle it. There is a lot too love about him and his potential.
Yeah I’ve been high on JT since he came to NY. Seemed like a good change of scenery guy. Just on a humanity level it’s nice to see him back in MLB. Being hurt for multiple prime years must be maddening for pro athletes.
No worries it’s not like that vesting option will kick in based on innings. Stro will not be back with the Yankees in 2026.
Has Schlittler had his TJ surgery yet? Almost every Yankees pitcher is required to blowout their elbow before being called up.
Ditto for the Dodgers.
rotation has been killing it for 2 weeks if the lineup could manage to be bad instead of historically bad they’d be in first by 5 games
dasit: And if pigs had wings…
I found the Pink Floyd fan!
Can he hit?
Why? You all want to ruin the vibe in the NY clubhouse now? This dude is a joke and a cancer. Another ball player that’s more important than his team.
He probably won’t cover first base anymore either it’s too close to a position change🤩
Oh no, say it isn’t Stro !!
Marcus Noman returns!
Yes!!
Should he pitch for success or just try not to get lit up like a Christmas tree the way he did this year before hitting the IL? 🤔
Wow!
Interesting developments with Strohman and the Yankees.
The Yankees openly criticize Strohman’s pitching skills in the Media and say he is going to be traded. As is the Yankees “MO” , the Yankees push the narrative that Strohman would be a great middle of the rotation starter for any team but the Yankees?!
The Yankees, as usual in Yankees trade negotiations, vastly overvalue a older, declining, overpriced, injury prone player they are trying to dump on another team for an ask that is laughably high (like so many others) in Yankees trade talks.
The Yankees learn(surprise, surprise) that teams are not interested in Strohman and his big contract and would rather break in their young starters than pay through the nose for an injured, overpriced starter who would likely cost them players and/or prospects.
MLB teams are not “chomping at the bit” to acquire Strohman and the Yankees brass and fans are scratching their heads and wondering why?!
Fast forward: halfway through the ’25 season with injuries decimating
the Yankees rotation and the Yankees trade for more starting pitching sputtering,
Cue the lights smoke, thunder and lightening and don’t look now,
but who emerges as a key player in whether the NYY retain the division lead or regress to a Wild Card Team in the AL playoffs?!
None other than Marcus Strohman!
Karma is a beeeech..
You ok? Seems a bit unhinged. The Yankees never criticized Stroman and openly said he would get traded.
Word! Sounds like a fantasy fiction rant. The Yankees never “needed” to move Stroman they explored the options. It’s turned into a bad signing but one they’ll walk away from at the end of this year. If Stro shows something they may flip him if not they keep/cut him.
