The Brewers will open the second half without their starting right fielder. Milwaukee placed Sal Frelick on the 10-day injured list, backdated to July 15, due to a left hamstring strain. Blake Perkins was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to take his spot.
Frelick suffered the injury in Milwaukee’s final game before the All-Star Break. He first showed some discomfort on a stolen base and came out of the game after making a sliding catch in the following half-inning. Isaac Collins finished the game in right field and gets the start tonight against Dodgers righty Emmet Sheehan. The switch-hitting Collins has a solid .259/.363/.389 line with five homers in 228 plate appearances. He’d mostly been playing left field, where Jake Bauers and potentially Perkins could get more playing time.
This interrupts an excellent season for the 25-year-old Frelick. He has seven home runs and is hitting .294/.354/.404 across 385 trips to the plate. Frelick has stolen 17 bases in 21 attempts and is playing his usual plus defense in right field. The Brewers haven’t provided a timetable on his return, though it’s perhaps encouraging that they waited a few days to monitor his progress before making the injured list decision.
Milwaukee concluded the first half on a seven-game win streak. They’re a season-high 16 games above .500 and have pulled within a game and a half of the Cubs in the NL Central. The Brewers hold the first Wild Card spot in the National League and are 4.5 games clear of the Giants, the top non-playoff team in the NL.
Sheehan is pitching Saturday. It’s Glasnow tonight.
Perkins is a solid replacement, glad he’s back
His offense…. When Perkins can put up a .700 OPS then he is quite the fourth outfielder but when he struggles to slug .340-.350 it can be rough, like his D but with Collins/Chourio (both average to above average D but very fast) out there I’d like them to get Bauers bat in the other OF corner, the Crew need the better bat
Even if Frelick is out a short time I think if White Sox send some money that Andrew Benintendi would be a perfect pick up for them. I think he will be the best trade pick up of this year trade deadline. But dont wait
Oh they can wait. Wait for him to be dfa and pick him up for peanuts.
Brewers need an infielder for the left side of the infield. That’s their biggest need. Only way they’d need an outfielder is if Frelick is expected to miss several weeks
Durbin is doing a fantastic job, glove and bat. It’s just SS that is needed and the Brewers will have a hard and expensive time fixing that hole that I don’t think they go for it.
Brewers are right there in the fight with the Cubs. The way they’re going, it might come down to the wire between them for NL Central.
The Brewers need to stick to the lineup and guys they have now because honestly at this point in his career Collins is better than Benintendi.
Collins has been surprisingly good, like top 10 LF good. Put up 1.7 fWAR while not playing every day to start. Agree on Tendy doing nothing for the Crew.
So where are all the “ laughin larrys” yuckin it up at me all off-season…. I know my Crew rants are “painful” but the truth is the truth and those guys in Mil have some special stew simmering/cooking up…. After all the decades of baseball these jokers in MID MAY wanted me thinking my crew was dead, they’d be sellers and the cubs would dominate the central the next decade+…. The crew are once AGAIN top ten in runs scored (8th as of now) ahead of the Mets, Phillies, Jays, Reds ect….. they’ve scored 67 more runs than the padres and have played fewer games…. But just because people say their offense isn’t “good enough” that just makes it “true” huh…. Obviously and Thank God Not, and the Truth is the truth, if u ever wanna know the state of the crew ask Craig counsell, after the season was over last year he commented on how far of a gap there was between the Crew/cubs I’m nearly every facet of the game (it was 10 games last year) and he knows his pitching is not anywhere close to where it needs to be to overtake that 10 game difference from just last year…. And the crew get better to, cubs get tucker but have no third baseman…. Brewers add loads of pitching talent to active roster, not through trades/spending money but by consistent internal development, to add Woodruff/Misiorowski to an already above average starting group, now Cortes is nearly back as well…. Traded civale, the cubs third best starter wasn’t even going to be in the Crews top ten this year so they literally let him walk when they had a very reasonable option they could’ve picked up to keep him…. DL Hall/Aaron Ashby are insane lefties to pair with Uribe/Megill in this years pen….Not sure why it’s hard to understand that the team that pitches best, runs fastest and plays the best defense is going to be a good team…. And oh they’re 8th in MLB in runs scored…. Anyway that’s my rant for now, Thank God for Murph!!!!
It is pretty amazing that they’re 8th in runs when they’re only 15th in batting average and 23rd in homeruns. I would worry a little bit about the dearth in power, because as you face better pitching it’s harder to string hits together. Those three-run bombs sure are nice.
Well you’ve gotta be on base to hit three run bombs, and getting on base and running well means more stressful pitches and more chances to see a mistake, the crew are proving stolen bases should count towards slugging or at least OPS because it’s not a one year fluke, they’ve proven speed is just as important if not more important than pure slugging/power when it comes to consistency in scoring runs, if it seems “out there” or far fetched well whatever, they’ve done it and continue to do it over teams that spend hundreds of millions of dollars to get the ball over the fence and the crew just score runs, a top ten offense is not deficient, there are always ways to improve or ways a team could be better but this bs about the crew not being “legit contenders” because their offense isn’t good enough is laughable..
And to say it’s harder to string hits together against good pitching…. Well it’s harder to hit homeruns against good pitching as well…. Being a super fast team that consistently puts the ball in play, gets on base and sees a lot of pitches is way more fruitful when it comes to consistency against good pitching, the crew are the only team to tag Skenes and countless other good starters this year, Lazardo had a top era in the national league until late may-early June…. It’ll be hard for him to have his era “recovered” before September of this year with what the crew did to him…. Be solid if unspectacular ball players doing what u gotta do to see more pitches/play winning ball and the wins will come, HRs are mostly thrown and not hit and the more consistent pressure put on a pitcher the more chances to get that mistake and make it count and that’s exactly what the Brewers are excelling at as a team…. Also the crews fantastic pitching as a team puts incredible pressure on these good starters they face/will face come oct. they know they can’t be giving up more than 2-3 otherwise they have no chance, they’ll be facing misiorowski, a great looking woodruff, Peralta, knowing they can’t afford to make mistakes cause the Crew aren’t going to give up many on any given day, that also appears to be an underrated or undervalued contribution to this offense..Top ten offense..
Crew fans, how would you line up your starting pitching depth chart 5-8? Priester, Henderson, Patrick, Myers with Crow and Rodriguez maybe pushing to support that group on the horizon? Would that be a fair way to characterize the group? Is there enough depth there to trade a guy like Patrick?
When I look at the roster, it seems like there’s a bit of a need for position player depth? Could a bit of a need for need challenge trade emerge between the Brewers and a contender who is deep in position player depth but needs pitching depth? The Blue Jays have a glut of high floor position players on the bench or at AAA. Mostly, they are high on base line drive type hitters but there are a few guys with more upside and higher risk. It would depend on the position of need, handedness, pure platoon/bench profile now or more optionable depth that could have more future upside. But the Jays have a fair bit of all of this because they collected a bunch of upper minors players in their selloff last deadline and internal guys are pushing upward. They might skew a little more left handed in terms of surplus, but they probably are looking to add a right handed bat at the deadline too, so that might still make a couple right handed hitters available.
After last night’s gem you have to include Priester in the top 5. Put Gasser in 5-8 if you want. In no order, Peralta, woody, Miz, Priester and Quintana are starting 5. I’d really like to see Woody back next year but who knows. Quintana is also a free agent. I just don’t know of there’s a big fish out there where you sell from their starting pitching depth or prospects. If Vaughn/Bauers stink it up in the next 7-10 days I could see them doing something at first. But is it worth it to trade 2 or 3 pieces away for 2-3 months of Eugenio Suarez to cut into Durbins playing time? (Who by the way, single handedly provided the offense last night against LA)
People calling for help at SS don’t appreciate Joey O’s defense enough. I think they ride with Ortiz at short and hope he catches fire again like he did a month or so ago.
That’s a wealth of depth. Of course there’s a reason they say you can never have too much pitching. But just having that many guys who could take the ball for a major league start could open up possibilities on the trade front given there are fewer pure sellers now. Lots of contenders need starting pitching depth and might be able to return position players who could have a major league role now.
The Crews pitching depth should probably be marveled at by the rest of the league…. Yes plenty of “depth” for a trade but who are I going to upgrade…. Durbin won Sat game in LA, has had an OPS way over .900 the last nearly six weeks, runs, doesn’t strikeout, versatile and has 5+ years of team control, Ortiz is becoming a top five defensive shortstop before our eyes and has elite bat speed/traits u really can’t teach and has been still flashing his power potential at times…. These guys seem to Love each other and to disrupt that, for what!? The jays have a young 3b but is he really an upgrade when u have Durbin at league minimum for nearly the next three years…. Who’s been worth what, nearly three WAR in less than half a season at a new position as a rookie absurd…. What they need is a healthy Garrett Mitchell…. Seeing Suarez tee off against the cards last weekend was cool, of course that bat would be nice but to pay to get it…. To loose Durbins playing time and further development, then to only loose Suarez/have to overpay for an old player who can’t run with the Crew and would clog up the bases…. If anything I’m hoping the crew goes for adding more pitching, last year they added Mears at the deadline…. What a move that’s turned out to be…. That’s what it seems/I’m seemingly hoping this deadline can produce/offer the Crew…. Opportunities for the future/ways of adding talent without having to displace a younger more athletic player or cost them their elite pitching depth
Yeah, I don’t know how it all works when/if everyone is healthy. The Frelick injury just gets you wondering who the next up is. I don’t know the progress of those injured players who could come back. I didn’t realize Mitchell was expected back. I get the resistance to fix what ain’t broke from a team wide performance. I was just looking more at the depth chart and it seems like there’s a much steeper drop off on the position player side. On the surface, the bench kind of looks weak and AAA reinforcements on the position player end don’t feel as high floored as you’d like for a contender. But I didn’t deep dive everyone. Monasterio doesn’t look like a particularly threatening bench bat, but I do see that he’s hit lefties fine enough.
The Blue Jays sold last deadline so they have a glut of guys at AAA. A lot of them seem like Brewers types that would fit in to the mixing and matching and high skills over flashy tools style that team has been playing. Most have multiple option years left or aren’t even on the 40 man yet which could help if you are making other additions and just want some insurance for now with longer term upside. Basically, the Jays have position player equivalents of Chad Patrick. Not always on the active roster but able to ply a role when called on and enough of them that if you were to part with one, you feel the next guy might be just as good or better like Logan Henderson.
