Eight Teams Showing Interest In Luis Robert Jr.

By Mark Polishuk | July 13, 2025 at 9:52pm CDT

Luis Robert Jr. has long been seen as a natural trade candidate, and interest remains in the former All-Star even as he is battling through a second consecutive difficult year.  The New York Post’s Jon Heyman writes that “eight teams have checked in” with the White Sox about Robert, without specifying the identities of any of these suitors.

After going 1-for-4 in Chicago’s 6-5 loss to the Guardians today, Robert concludes the first half with only a .190/.275/.325 slash line over 306 plate appearances.  Robert’s strikeout and walk rates are both near the bottom of the league, and while his .315 xwOBA is much higher than his .264 wOBA, even that .315 number is subpar.  Despite this overall dismal offensive performance, a few bright spots exist.  The right-handed hitting Robert has a very impressive .913 OPS against southpaws (but a .498 OPS against righty pitching), he has stolen 22 bases in 28 attempts, and his barrel and walk rates are above average.

Between this season and his injury-marred 2024 campaign, Robert has hit just .210/.277/.356 in 727 PA since Opening Day 2024, translating to a 76 wRC+.  His center field glovework has declined since a 2023 season that now seems like a career year, though Robert’s defense is still at least decent, adding another possible plus for any interested suitors.

Hindsight being 20-20, the ideal time for the White Sox to move Robert was in the wake of his All-Star campaign in 2023, given how his production has since cratered.  The Sox opted to keep Robert in the hopes that another healthy and productive season would only enhance his trade value, yet this plan has now backfired.  Even with the amount of interest that Robert is still generating, obviously the White Sox aren’t going to get nearly the haul they once anticipated getting for the outfielder, which is a big setback for a rebuilding team that still needs a lot more talent.

2025 is the final guaranteed year of the six-year, $50MM extension Robert signed prior to the 2020 season.  The Sox hold $20MM club options (each with a $2MM buyout) on his services for both 2026 and 2027, and this extra contractual control was once seen as another major asset to Robert’s trade value.  He has approximately $6.25MM remaining of his $15MM salary for 2025, so with that $2MM buyout, the $8.25MM price tag attached to Robert now might be too pricey for other teams to fully entertain, given his struggles.  The Sox are reportedly willing to include money to help facilitate trades of Robert and Andrew Benintendi, though one would imagine that’s a greater concern as it relates to Benintendi’s much larger remaining salary obligations.

Heyman notes that some clubs feel Robert could benefit from being “a complementary player,” which isn’t a surprise given his drastic splits.  Robert’s ability to still crush lefties provides some hope that he can get his overall game on track, as interested suitors might also feel that Robert can benefit simply from a change of scenery.  Still just a few weeks shy of his 28th birthday, Robert should be in his prime, and that big 2023 season certainly still lingers in the minds of rival front offices.

The Dodgers, Giants, Reds, Mariners, and Mets are among the clubs who have been linked to Robert’s trade market in the last couple of years, with New York showing interest as recently as May.  It would seem that probably every contender with a need in the outfield could at least call up White Sox GM Chris Getz to make a few inquiries about an asking price for Robert, and even a brief hot streak for Robert after the All-Star break could spark a minor bidding war.

I’d love to see him on the Phillies, personally, but I’m not sure they have the right sort of prospect for the swap. Jean Cabrera, maybe? It would need to be someone both simultaneously interesting and not at all a part of the Phillies plans. (Chase Meidroth is a good example of this asset class…or former Phil Hao-Yu Lee)

Why would you say that? Look at what Andrew Vaughn has done with the Brewers, 10 rbi’s in 5 games. The White Sox are maybe the worst organization in pro sports. All some of these guys need is to get the hell away from this cesspool team.

It’s no guarantee, but Robert might kill it for whatever team takes a chance at him. It would not surprise me if with much better coaching and being on a team that isn’t morbidly depressing to play for, he lights it up. Might not happen, but very worth taking a chance on b/c the upside is certainly there.

I think whoever gets Robert is going to get a steal, partly because I do not see the Sox getting much and then not being able to develop that player….
Robert killed it a few years ago and you really do not lose that, I just think he needs a lot of coaching up and maybe some tough love too, and the Sox really have the worst coaching in baseball considering they did not do the correct thing and jettison the entire staff after last years monumental failure. All they do is keep getting pandering coaches.. pandering to the players, pandering to the org to keep their jobs.. Its why guys like Ozzie and AJ would never be considered for the org, they actually demand results. this org just goes through the motions and now the next generation is learning that on the south side.

Sure there is. He won’t cost much in trade capital for a high end reclamation. Doesn’t hurt to simply check in/ask. Fellow veteran OF Tauchman probably has as many contending teams asking as a decent role player/OF depth-the player doesn’t have to be great for several clubs looking to improve with under-the-radar additions.

Sure they do if the cost is one or two low level sort of prospects. It is worth the minimal cost and you can just dump him after the year. Every team should be interested at the right cost.

There still is too much talent there. I think a lot of teams see the White Sox as the clown show org they are and feel they can easily turn Robert around to make him, at least, consistently good over a lot of other players. On top of that they will not have to give up much as the Sox scouting still sucks it big time.

Maybe it will finally get the minority owners for the Sox to rise up and eject him from the position.. I guess we can all dream…

I am seriously hoping my Padres trade for Luis Robert. I would LOVE it. Padres have a black hole at DH. Trenton Brooks is the current DH and Sheets is the starting LF. I would replace Brooks with Sheets and put Robert in LF for the Padres. Catcher Korey Lee would be another White Sox player I’d like to acquire for the Padres. Roberts and Lee would be huge upgrades on Brooks and Maldonado/Diaz. Huge! We’ll see I guess.

Im surprised ANY of these guys on the southside show up. .

I can’t imagine the Mets would give up anything of value for Robert. I get that Robert theoretically has a high ceiling, but Taylor plays better defense and, believe it or not, has almost exactly the same wRC+ and OPS+ as Robert. As a Mets fan, watching Taylor’s struggles at the plate has been brutal. To think that he’s hitting the same as Robert, it strains credulity to think that the Mets are interested in Robert.

Not sure I agree with you. To start with, it all depends on how you define “of value”.. and we don’t know that the ChiSox are demanding much value at this point. The Mets might very well be willing to part with one of their very many talented single-A infielders.
On a baseball front, Robert’s .880 OPS against lefties vs just .493 for Taylor is a huge difference, even if lefties are only 28% of all starters in MLB.
Taylor has done this most of his career: play consistently well in platoon or part-time role. As a starter, he hits well for a stretch, then loses it. The Mets had the luxury of feeding Bader into the CF rotation when Taylor struggled, then benching Bader again when Taylor got back on track. This year, they have no one. Milwaukee did the same thing with him.
In short, adding Robert to the mix instantly improves the offense against lefties, and could have the secondary effect of seeing Taylor also start to hit better. Plus, Robert can also be used as a late-inning PR on the days he does not start.
Lastly, this is what Stearns does: he improves the team on the periphery. As he put it, everyone looks at the top end of the teams talent for improvement. But you can also improve a team by raising the floor on the talent. Given what Taylor has done thus far, and the lack of internal answers, Robert does improve the floor of that CF performance.

Correct Geoff. Robert as a platoon player is worth the prospect capital for the Mets. He’s is not returning a big prospect.
A rich team like the Mets can afford his salary, now and next season if they give him the $20 million in 2026.

        Platoon player in 2025.

Project for 2026 to try to get more from him, while still retaining Siri and TTaylor. If not, oh well, he’s still a great bat against LHPs.

I wouldn’t go quite that far. I’m not paying a player $20 million (plus payroll tax) for next year just to be a short-side platoon player. And Robert’s injury history makes him even more of a downside risk. Just get him for this year to do what he is currently doing because that fills a need that we currently have. I also think Gilbert’s too steep a price. Gilbert’s hit well for over a month now, and has gotten particularly hot lately, hitting 6 of his 12 HRs in the last two weeks. He may not be the superstar that the Mets’ press deludedly suggested when the Mets first acquired him. But he’s also not the scrub that many fans started to give up on in May.

If the Cubs pay up for Eugenio Suarez to play 3B after the ASG, then Robert would be a candidate to take over the 5th OF role from Vidal Brujan – assuming the White Sox kick in at least half of the remaining money.

The Cubs don’t really have a backup CF on the current roster. If PCA was injured they’d call up Kevin Alcantara but Alcantara is a potential trade chip in either a Suarez deal or a deal for a #3 starter. Robert could give PCA and Happ a day off here and there against a lefty (DH for Happ with Suzuki to LF).

Robert + $3.5M for Brujan and a couple of organizational minor leaguers to fill out the Charlotte roster (BJ Murray for example)?

Terrible analogy that is overloaded with flaws. Vogelbach’s inability to play a position at al, plus his horrific slow-footedness made him a liability overall, even when he did hit. By contrast, Robert not only plays a position, but he plays one that is defensively important. And Robert’s baserunning is a plus. Vogie not failed to run the bases adequately, he clogged the bases so that runners behind him could also not advance. How many DP opportunities did he set up for the other team? How many should-be runs failed to score because of him?
Lots of teams, including the Mets, carry a bench player who only plays defense and pinch runs. Robert not only does that, but he also hits lefties.

The point being that most teams are looking for offense, and Mr. Roberts jr doesn’t provide any worth mentioning. Fine, he can hit lefties. Most of the league is right handed. He’s just not a player that should garner much trade interest, unless you need a good defensive player.

Right now, the Mets are getting minimal offense from CF at all. Lefties, while a minority, still make up close to 30% of the starters in the league. Thats two days a week where he would produce offense that we are not currently getting, and eleven weeks left in the season. . If there’s a better move out there, then make that move. But getting Robert is better than standing pat.

Jose Azocar is a better option than trading for Luis Robert jr.. He’s in Syracuse now, just a call up away. Drew Gilbert is a better option as well. Luis Robert jr is not an option. I’d even entertain bringing up Jett Williams before I traded for Robert jr. He’s not a good player, and he’s not worth trading for just to find out if it’s the environment in Chicago he has a problem with. If he can’t overcome Chicago, he won’t be any better in NY. And I disagree. Many times it’s the moves you don’t make that are all the difference. I really think that applies here. If he can’t reach close to 100% of his abilities in Chicago, he’s not going to do it with more pressure on him in NY.

Azocar cannot hit anybody, right or left. And he’s not the baserunner that Robert is. So he’s not a better option than Robert, offensively or defensively. You’re blinded by your disdain for Robert that you keep missing the point. You keep judging him by the potential that he will never reach. But thats not the issue here. The issue is what he IS doing now. And that is an improvement over what we have now, and is also more than Azocar ever did or could do.
Gilbert is not a legitimate CF defensively, and he never was projected to be. The NY press misread or embellished the scouting reports, and the fans blindly ate it up.
Jett Williams isn’t even playing CF with any regularity – just 14 times in 76 games this year. He’s not showing much HR power in double-A. And he was slumping until a week ago. He’s a solid prospect. But he doesn’t walk on water, and he’s not currently the dyed-in-the-wool superstar who can just jump from AA to the majors.

Also the point is that they’d have to be desperate to want this guy. He’s not a good offensive player, period. In the Mets case, which is my primary concern, we already have 2 excellent defensive CFers with poor offensive stats. We do not need a third. I’d rather see them tap our system to bring someone up than to trade for Robert jr. If we were going to trade, the Mets need a bat, not an all defense, no bat player at any position.

We’re only talking about a rental player here, not mortgaging the future. I’m not saying he’s worth a lot – he isn’t. But he’s worth something. And if there’s a better CF solution on the trade market at a justifiable price, then go get him instead. But don’t just shun this completely. because guess what? The Mets are desperate for some – a n y – offense out of that position.
We don’t have two CFs, we have one. No one knows when Siri is coming back, or what his condition will be when he does. Tap into what system? Gilbert is not a legitimate major league CF according to scouting reports. The NY press just completely distorted the truth on that. There’s nothing else in AAA. Carson Benge just got to AA a couple of weeks ago, and Nick Morabito has a solid OPS, but his offense has actually been a mixed bag.

First, who aid anything about “losing” Gilbert for Roberts? I specifically said Robert is not worth much, but he is worth something. The Mets have a boatload of talented, well-regarded infield prospects in A-ball. All are still young for their respective leagues, and some of them are progressing slowly because of it. I’d give up one of them..
But how is calling up Gilbert a solution? How many prospects have we called up in recent years who did not perform until after they were shuttled back and forth to the minors three or four times? How does Gilbert help now? Gilbert may be a month or two away, or he may not make it this year at all. Even when he does, he probably won’t hit. Thats just what the percentages say.

If 8 teams are interested in the guy, and Stearns really wants him, which I doubt, the Mets will have to give up something for him. Gilbert is the type of player the White Sox would be looking at from the Mets in trade. If 8 teams want the guy, the price goes up. It’s called a “trade market” for a reason. The White Sox aren’t waiting for an A ball player to maybe make it to the majors. They want something closer, and if 8 teams are interested, they will get it.

Well, you can play the percentages, but that only puts Gilbert, and Robert jr on a level playing field, but for the fact that Gilbert is in our system, and won’t cost us a player for a guy who has really only had one good season in the majors.. the guy has only played 1 full season in his career. He’s just not the answer here.

Well, if Gilbert is the price, then the Mets do not have to make the deal. But no one said that is the case. You’ve made an arbitrary assumption that it is, and treated it as fact.
As for 8 teams being “interested”, umm, are you new to baseball rumors? Showing interest is just a euphemism for called and asked, kicked the tires, just checked in to see. The idea that all 8 are interested to the point of making an offer is a stretch.
you’re judging the potential for trade against a bar that you’ve set but may not be where it really is.

And you’ve made an arbitrary assumption that it isn’t. If 8 teams are interested that means they’ve check in on the asking price. The asking price is going to determine who is really interested and who is not. Then a counter offer will be made by every one of those teams that think the asking price can be bartered down, or is reasonable. And this will go on until the White Sox are convinced they have the best deal in hand. The thing is that if the Mets trade for Roberts, they are stuck with him for the rest of the season, and out a prospect. If they bring up someone who still has options, and they don’t perform, they just get sent back down with a taste. Both Azocar, and Gilbert have better numbers in AAA than Roberts has in the majors. Gilbert and Azocar both have motivation to come up and do well. Roberts hadn’t shown he has any motivation to do well in the majors. He’s getting his money, and he’ll be out of the majors as soon as his current contract expires. Gilbert is playing most of his time in CF in Syracuse. Can you guess why? He’s probably the next one to be called up. So you can tell me that he doesn’t project to be a CFer. But the Mets front office thinks differently. He doesn’t have to be great. He has to be an average defender, and a productive bat. Tyrone Taylor can take the later innings. McNeil can pick up some slack. And there is always Nimmo who can slide over in a pinch. We need a productive bat for CF. And Roberts ain’t it.

Whoever gets Robert is likely not going to pay a lot and get far more back in return, but please keep up your trolling, as its so beneficial to the world.

Because for his first 4 years in the league he was a total stud. MVP caliber player but with some injuries.

No one envisioned his play dropping off significantly in his mid 20’s. Hes an obvious change of scenery candidate and we’ve seen that work many times in the past. The Sox will still get a decent prospect or two for him but not the massive haul they could have gotten two years ago.

There still is lots of interest around the league he’s still massively talented and a better organization can fix him. Still plays good defense, good baserunner and crushes lefties. Get him hitting righties again and he’s an all star again at only 27.

Also consider that many of the teams that should be able to afford it would also be paying payroll tax, possibly as much as 110%. That brings the total cost to $17.3+ mil.

The Phillies are definitely one of the teams that has checked in on Robert. At this point, i’d be all in on Buxton and Duran from the Twins. If the White Sox would accept a package of two 40 man guys like Johan Rojas & Michael Mercado + a 2nd/3rd tier prospect like a Keaton Anthony – it would be worth the investment. They could bump Marsh to LF, call up Crawford to play CF – and let Robert spell them vs. LHP. Instead of the White Sox eating part of the deal, the Phils could send one of Taijuan Walker, Jordan Romano or Max Kepler to offset salary and give the Sox a stable veteran, if not another potential trade chip. As bad as Robert has been, I still think he is probably thee likeliest position player in the AL to be moved in the next two weeks.

If so (and if people like Heyman feed us this frequently) we should largely ignore them, right MLBTR?

Playoff teams or those believing they can go deep in the playoffs tend to want a speed outfielder for the 26th man. Doesn’t hurt that he can step up against a lefty and also has a plus glove for late inning defense. I can believe there is interest. Also believe Uncle Jerry is going to have to send cash back. Probably minimum half of the remaining salary plus the 2m buy out. They screwed up badly by not trading him a few years back.
