Mets Reinstate Brooks Raley, Designate Richard Lovelady For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | July 18, 2025 at 1:50pm CDT

The Mets announced that left-hander Brooks Raley has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list. Fellow lefty Richard Lovelady has been designated for assignment as the corresponding move.

Raley, 37, has been a solid lefty reliever for a few years now. He was working as a starter in Korea from 2015 to 2019 but returned to affiliated ball after that. He spent time with the Reds, Astros and Rays before coming to the Mets for the 2023 season.

His first season as a Met was a good one. He pitched 54 2/3 innings with a 2.80 earned run average. His 10.6% walk rate was a bit high but he punched out 25.8% of opponents and got grounders at a 43% clip. That was impressive enough that the Mets picked up his $6.5MM club option for 2024. Unfortunately, he made just eight appearances last year. He landed on the injured list due to elbow inflammation and eventually required Tommy John surgery.

He remained unsigned throughout this offseason but re-signed with the Mets in late April, a one-year deal with a $1.85MM guarantee. That comes in the form of a $1.5MM salary this year followed by a $300K buyout on a $4.75MM club option for 2026. There are also bonuses in the deal, including a $250K roster bonus that he unlocked by being added to the active roster today.

The Mets came into the year with A.J. Minter and Danny Young as their lefty relief contingent. Shortly after the Raley deal was agreed to, both Minter and Young hit the IL. Minter required season-ending lat surgery while Young required Tommy John surgery.

As Raley has been rehabbing, the Mets have cycled through a number of stopgap lefties, including Lovelady, Génesis Cabrera, José Castillo and Colin Poche. Ideally, Raley can get back to his pre-surgery form and give the club a reliable southpaw out of the ’pen. For what it’s worth, he just threw nine scoreless innings in the minors during his rehab assignment, with a 36.1% strikeout rate, 2.8% walk rate and 52.6% ground ball rate. Regardless of how he performs over the next few weeks, the Mets will likely look to add another lefty or two prior to the deadline.

Lovelady, 30, is out of options and has been been on the fringes of a few rosters this year. He started with the Blue Jays but made just two appearances for them before getting designated for assignment. He elected free agency and landed a minor league deal with the Twins, though he opted out of that in mid-June.

Since then, he has twice signed with the Mets. After the first signing, he made one appearance before being designated for assignment and electing free agency. He re-signed a few days later and the second stint lasted a bit longer, allowing him to make five appearances.

On the whole, he has a 10.80 ERA this year, though it’s a small sample of 8 1/3 innings and most of the damage came in his second outing of the season. During his stint with the Twins, he tossed 20 2/3 Triple-A innings with a 1.31 ERA, 26.5% strikeout rate, 8.4% walk rate and 60.4% ground ball rate. Based on his recent track record, it’s possible he will again clear waivers and elect free agency in the coming days.

I’m not a N.Y fan per se, but under Cohen’s leadership Met’s fans seemingly have something(contention)to look forward to every single year.

Raley is going to cost us at minimum 5 games. He is downright awful and I don’t understand why hes on the team. He better not be Stearns answer to the bullpen. We need atleast 2 premium relievers. 2 of Felix Bautista, Jhoan Duran, Camillo Doval, Bednar, Shelby Miller, Victor Vodnick, Brandon Finnegan, or Hunter Harvey would suffice. If he goes out there and trades for losers that he thinks he can fix up like at last years trade deadline then the season is over

You are delusional & know nothing about baseball making baseless claims. Raley has been a solid pitcher for the Mets & for the Ray’s before that. Before you post something make sure you know what your talking about

@The Kaiser I’m delusional? Raley last pitched when he was 35, and he was below average. He got Tommy John, hasn’t pitched in over a year, and he is 37 years old. You talk like Stearns has assembled a lights out bullpen. Our bullpen is the worst in the national league. Keep thinking to yourself how smart you are. All I know is that I’m not the delusional one, you are. I bet you were one of those people that thought the Mets signing 39 year old Justin Verlander for 40 million a year was a good move to. I know baseball while you know how many flavors that Pringles comes in

you know whats funny is you say hey this guy hasnt pitched in a year coming off major and is 37 of course he is going to be awful and in the next sentence mention someone that came back at 39 from the same surgery and won the cy young his first year back.

even at 90% Raley is 100% better than Shintaro and even before throwing one pitch he has been more valuable. this season than shintaro in the last season and a half maybe even more.

also Verlanders the year he signed was worth 3.5 WAR for the year and at the time was still one of the top pitchers before the trade.

You really are clueless just admit you hate the mets and still waiting for Drew to come home with the milk after 20 years.

@Roll Justin Verlander did not win the Cy Young in his age 39 season. Second, Verlander signed a 2 year 80 million dollar deal with provisional option for a 3rd year at 30 million. Are you going to lie to me and say that the contract was a good contract? What track record has Brooks Raley shown to have above average potential? How on Earth can you compare Brooks Raley to Hall of Famer Justin Verlander coming back from Tommy John in their late 30s? You know less about baseball then I thought

Actually he won the the Cy Young the year before he joined the mets. Considering he was born Feb 20 1983 and on Feb 20 2022 he would have been 39 before the 2022 season and he won the 2022 cy young unanimously i would consider he won the cy young for his 39 yr season. Also if you watch the games they constantly said his first year with the mets the reigning cy young winner and that he is 40 should have tipped you off.

Do i think Verlander was a good signing at 2 / 80? yes because 3rd year (which was 35 not 30) is irrelevant because he would have to done well the 2nd year to get there. If he did well the salary im sure would have been fine with cohen. Also his first year if he played it all with the mets would have been top of the rotation production. The only aces truly available were Rodon Degrom and Verlander (dont count Senga because he was a wildcard and the mets signed him anyways).

Out of those 3, Verlander outperformed all 3 of them in the 2 years. So even before and in hindsight Verlander was the top choice.

I love degrom but that much length and dollars was way too much. So far Degrom has been paid about 100M and only played a a little less than one season. Are you saying he is worth 100M for 1 season?

Rodon in his first 2 season averaged out to roughly 0.5 WAR each season and peripherals match that. Thats mid rotation at best production but was really back end and Is that worth 54M?

The Mets need reinforcement. Lovelady is not cutting the tuna casserole, they need big time pitchers. Billy “ChumBucket” Lugo throws absolute gas. He’s stinky good and needs calling up. Ryan “Jumbo Trash Bag” Lambert throws a smelly changeup, batters swing at the changebup and precede to sleep in a dumpster. Stearns needs to go to work here and start cooking with gravy

I think the Mets should sign Jesse Chavez for a few days just to mess with Atlanta so they can’t re-sign him for the 30th time

Hopefully he comes back as good as last season. We need some kind of stability from the left side in the bullpen.
