The Orioles announced on Monday that Luis F. Castillo went unclaimed on waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. Baltimore designated him for assignment last week.
Castillo has yet to appear in a big league game with Baltimore. The O’s acquired him from Seattle in a DFA trade in early May. Castillo was immediately optioned and promptly landed on the minor league injured list. He wasn’t ready to return from the IL until June 29, the same day that the Orioles designated him for assignment. His only appearances in the Baltimore system so far have been a pair of rehab starts for their Florida complex affiliate.
The 30-year-old Castillo made a pair of starts for the Mariners in April. He allowed seven runs (six earned) with more walks than strikeouts over seven innings. That marked his first MLB work since his three-appearance debut with the 2022 Tigers. Castillo has been outrighted once before in his career, so he could have refused this assignment, but he’ll remain in the Baltimore system. He figures to occupy a spot in Norfolk’s rotation now that he’s healthy.
It’ll be interesting to see if my O’s can go on a streak and bridge the gap in the wild card standings. Currently 7.5 games back which is a lot of ground to make up but not so outlandish of a chance from where we were a month ago. Still, I think its better to sell this season as we have no starting pitching depth with potentially best pitchers still on the Il (Rodriguez, Wells, Bradish). Its not a terrible idea to ride out any momentum close to the trade deadline, but if you don’t make up some substantial ground I think you have to start talking trades of your expendable assets earlier rather than later.
Scruff-they have been playing much better the last 45 games but they have to play even better than that the rest of the way to make a wild car (figure 86 wins to get in – they have to jump 7 teams). The worst thing they can do is sit and wait it out like they did last winter and the opportunities pass them by. Then they miss the playoffs and lose the guys on expiring deals for nothing at the end of the year.
Wells is not really a SP (he broke down at 110 IP at his highest in a season before the injuries), Rodriguez is probably a reliever now. Bradish is realistically the only SP returnee with confidence. They need to go on the market and get two more #1/#2 SP’s this winter at bare minimum.
I feel like the writing for the season has been on the wall for the o’s ever since they fired Hyde
just came here to see if you linked the right player
Not *that* Luis Castillo. F is not the one that is under investigation for possible gambling . Something has to give, sports gambling profits are a strong incentive to monkey with results. Dracula can’t bite you unless you let him into your house. MLB has let Dracula into the house. Who’s to blame for the blood loss?
I think Luis Castillo did it
You’re mixing up Latino players dude. Luis Ortiz of Cleveland is under investigation. The other Luis Castillo is a good pitcher for the Mariners.
Not *that* Luis Castillo, M,F or otherwise.
You just mad cause the O’s couldn’t pull off the trade for the real one to right the sinking ship at Camden so you throw him under the bus?
All you hear is Luis, so figure its gotta be the one they couldn’t land?
MacGeom: Just out of curiosity. Do you confuse Smith with Jones or is that easier for you?
“Those aren’t pillows!” – Orioles
Luis “Fake” Castillo
They told him to get the F out of there.
