The Red Sox are bringing catcher Ronaldo Hernández back to the organization on a minor league contract, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive. The 27-year-old was released from a minor league deal with the Yankees a couple weeks ago. He had a three-day stint in the Mexican League before returning to the affiliated ranks. He’ll report to Triple-A Worcester.
Hernández was once a highly-regarded prospect in the Tampa Bay system. The Rays dealt him to the Red Sox in advance of the 2021 season. That turned out to be a lopsided deal in Tampa Bay’s favor, as they landed Jeffrey Springs in that four-player swap. Boston also acquired infielder Nick Sogard, while the Rays picked up reliever Chris Mazza. Hernández spent a couple seasons on Boston’s 40-man roster but went through outright waivers after the ’22 campaign.
The Colombia native played the ’23 season in Worcester. He spent last year in the Arizona system and made 25 Triple-A appearances in the Yankees organization earlier this year. He hit .221 with a pair of home runs. Hernández now carries a .264/.324/.453 slash line in nearly 1200 plate appearances at the top minor league level. He has been called to the majors twice (both by the Red Sox in 2022) but hasn’t made it into a game.
Carlos Narváez and Connor Wong are Boston’s only catchers on the 40-man roster. The Sox traded depth catcher Blake Sabol to the White Sox over the weekend. Hernández backfills alongside defensive specialist Seby Zavala in Worcester. Zavala would probably be the first man up if either Narváez or Wong sustain an injury.
That’d be kinda like selling the Brooklyn bridge wouldnt it?
GaSox – Well this is Bridge Year #6 ;o)
Its not really Breslow’s team to sell….
Anyway, Ronaldo is gonna fit in quite nicely on the Liverpool squad for FSG
Breslow doesn’t own the team. You can’t sell something that you don’t own.
Hahahaha
Well, if your brother was also your son, I could see it being possible.
Now now, wait for the big trade before you cry fowl.
I think the Sox might get Springs at or before the deadline. They’re not coming off Duran and the price of a front-line starter is going to be through the roof. Will be a fun 2 weeks.
I actually like this idea. Springs has been really good for the past couple of months and may finally have shaken off the rust from his TJS. He won’t cost nearly as much as Joe Ryan or certain other options, and is under contract for next season for an affordable price, with an option for 2027.
I would think Wong has to be running out of rope. This move could likely preclude a Zeby promotion and Hernandez plugs in at Worcester.
Wong’s had a tough go this year. Yeesh.
So much for being the last man standing from the Mookie trade.
Who cares? Get over the Betts trade. He wanted out. Granted, they should have gotten more but it is what it is.
Lowey- you know, I hadn’t thought about it for a while. Im a guy that roots for the laundry, not who’s in it. But, since its on here, the Sox traded two of the top 20 position players of the last ten years and got:
Jeter Downs
Conner Wong
Alex Verdugo
Kyle Harrison
Jordan Hicks
Some other kid….
Thats over multiple Front Offices. Doesnt exactly inspire confidence in ownership, does it?
Just me, but, I wouldn’t put devers in the top 20 position players of the last decade. There’s been more than 19 guys taking the field between 2015 and today who are much better talent than him
I understand the Sox public relations dept has been working overtime to denigrate Devers, but you’re a better fan than that. Since 2018 when he was a full time player, Devers has:
– 3rd most doubles
– 6th most rbi
– 10th most home runs
Wong has gone from being pretty much an every day catcher to a once-a-week catcher. That will affect one’s performance.
Wong’s got an option, I doubt they totally cut bait. But a vacation to Worcester would make sense
It’s a tough question. It takes time to develop a good tandem with your SP. That’s why certain pitchers always had a preferred member of the catching duos in their starts.
I think they had this lined up and saw it as a sabol upgrade, but, it may not mean anything to wong’s job security for now
Bye bye Wong
