Red Sox Sign Chadwick Tromp To Minors Contract

By Mark Polishuk | July 29, 2025 at 2:46pm CDT

The Red Sox have signed Chadwick Tromp to a minor league contract, as WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford encountered the catcher in the Triple-A Worcester dugout today.  The Orioles designated Tromp for assignment earlier this week and he elected free agency two days ago after clearing waivers, as Tromp had the right to reject an outright assignment in favor of a return to the open market.

The decision has now led to a quick new agreement with the Sox, as Tromp joins the fifth different organization of his 13-year pro career.  Tromp has appeared in each of the last six Major League seasons but only in sparing fashion, with 67 games on his MLB resume.  That includes two games with the Braves and six games with the Orioles in 2025, with Tromp getting 22 plate appearances (and delivering a .515 OPS).  He has hit .221/.230/.390 over 178 PA in the bigs and a much more respectable .253/.327/.416 slash line in 1414 career PA at the Triple-A level.

Solid glovework has been Tromp’s key to continual employment rather than his bat, and his lack of minor league options has already led to two trips through DFA limbo this year.  He’ll now join Seby Zavala as Worcester catchers with some big league experience, providing the Red Sox with some depth behind the active roster’s tandem of Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong.

Don – I hoped for Jeffers, and instead got Tromp.

I shoulda parlayed Tromp with Morton.

My fear is the Sox will leave Minnesota taking two out of three games but also taking Christian Vazquez back as well

Rsox – I think it all depends on Jeffers, if they trade him to some team then I can’t imagine them trading Vaz too. But if they think they can extend Jeffers, then Vaz is more likely to be traded.

As far as the series, Twins are spiraling fast having just lost 4 of 6 against the Nats and Rox.

Sox are lucky to not be facing Ryan or Buxton this series, they should definitely win today especially if Bader and Correa don’t play (I think Jeffers will definitely start).

Vaz is complete toast, can’t hit to save his life and his defense isn’t much of an upgrade over Wong.

If the Sox could swing a trade for both Ryan and Jeffers, I’d be ecstatic.

Fever- I assume he is just for depth in case of an injury. At least it did not cost anything since he was a free agent. Does not seem like he would be an improvement over Wong, so may never even get called up. I don’t think this means they are not still considering someone for the big club to replace Wong.

Uncle – They recently signed Ronaldo Hernandez for that reason, I think Tromp will replace Wong if the Sox can’t land a better catcher at the deadline.

Yes, solid glove work, but I hear he cheats at golf.

Bart – I hear he wears the smallest catcher’s glove in MLB.

Is this move because we couldn’t get Danny Jansen?

There need sto be a move to get a competent backup C.

I am a little concerned that this is it, but you never know.

If he can hit 180 with “solid glovework” he’s better than Wong.

    Dude has the yips.

Red sox sitting with 2nd wild card spot and only 5 games out of first in a very weak AL. Whod think it with all the whining at every minor league signing they make.
