The Yankees announced this morning that they’ve signed right-hander Geoff Hartlieb to a major league deal and selected him to the roster. Left-hander Jayvien Sandridge has been optioned to Triple-A to make room for Hartlieb on the active roster.
Hartlieb, 31, signed a minor league deal with the Yankees during the offseason and made his lone big league appearance of the season this past week against the Blue Jays. He was lit up for three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three in one inning of work and was promptly designated for assignment. He ultimately cleared waivers and elected free agency but is now back in the majors with New York on a fresh MLB contract.
Prior to playing for the Yankees, Hartlieb had played in five MLB seasons across four organizations. He got his start with the Pirates in 2019 and struggled to a 9.00 ERA in 35 innings during his debut season but settled in and provided some solid middle relief help for Pittsburgh during the shortened 2020 campaign with a 3.63 ERA in 22 1/3 frames. Since then he’s made only sparing MLB appearances, with an ugly 8.59 ERA in 22 innings of work between 2021 and 2024 for the Pirates, Mets, Marlins, and Rockies.
Going forward, Hartlieb figures to offer the Yankees another depth option capable of going multiple innings. That could be a useful stopgap addition as they try to sort out a pitching staff that recent lost Clarke Schmidt to what will likely end up being season-ending Tommy John surgery. Schmidt’s injury leaves the Yankees very short on starting depth with Ryan Yarbrough, Gerrit Cole, and Luis Gil all already on the shelf. That could leave the Yankees relying on bullpen games every fifth day for the time being unless they’re willing to dedicate a rotation spot to right-hander Allan Winans. As for Sandridge, the lefty recently made his MLB debut and two runs on two walks, a hit batsman, and a homer while recording two strikeouts in 2/3 of an inning. He’ll head back to Triple-A and serve as optionable lefty depth for the Yankees going forward.
yankees signing guys from the parking lot to try to beat the mets today
Really it’s to beat anybody lately
Yeah whatever it takes
His stats don’t look very good in limited play. Maybe they see something that isn’t apparent from those.
here is my question… he signs a Major League deal… if the Yankees DFA him in a week, I know he gets paid whatever salary they agree on regardless but his service time is only when he is on Major League roster… correct?
Yes, you only accrue service time while on an mlb active roster, or injured list.
thank you
Obviously they’ll sign anyone from the scrap heap. I’m 58 years old, maybe I should dust off my glove.
Wow…you could be the setup 8th inning guy for Devin….if they really need a setup guy when you are losing. I am sure Cash will sign you and DFA you the next day. That is his MO. I like your post!
So he’ll be DFA’d in the next few days for the Cam Schlittler call up.
Signings like this always take heat from fans. Every team does signings like this. They need a spot starter or maybe just someone to stash in case of injury. If you need that, this is the kind of pitcher you are going to get in early July.
Does this mean he gets paid twice? #winning
The pitching nowadays is getting very watered down. Good, reliable pitching harder to come to by. There are too many teams, and too many teams are not relevant. It’s time to get rid of some of the bottom feeders of the league
I thought Sandridge looked like he was going to be pretty good, moving forward. Yeah, he gave up a bomb to Alonso, but lots of people have. He’s going to become the all time leader in HRs for the Mets, later this year. And he was rather wild. But he threw some great sliders and did get two Ks. Of course, he has plenty of options, as this was his MLB debut. He’ll be back.
Cashman…with another “depth signing” who will get lit up putting another game out of reach and then will either be DFA’d or optioned out to AAA.
The closet is empty Cash….nobody wants or values the Yankees new toys…..too many bad decisions onplayers who are either coming off injuries (Williams) or had their best years on another team…time to blow up the team and sell and restock the farm….sell Goldy…Williams..drop DJ…check the market on Jazz…check the market on the Martian…Volpe…Rice….get anything you can for Peraza and get strategic and stop the mantra of just make the playoffs…..winning early and then scuffling into the playoffs and getting spanked doesn’t work in today’s MLB…
The Rangers probably “just wanted to make the playoffs in 2023.” Same with the D-back that year. Baseball is an unpredictable game. There are worse mantras than just making the playoffs. Like Fisher and Sternberg’s mantra of “let’s just play ball, spend as little as possible, and keep those revenue sharing checks coming.” At least the Steinbrenners try, with big signings like Fried, Rodon, Stroman, Judge, Bellinger….even Goldy. But he’s short term, anyway. Jazz and Volpe need to go, though.
Jazz is in the wrong position for him to succeed. Mental anchor, Belongs at 2B. Volpe cannot hit and I agree there. Stroman is a waste of time. The rest of the problem is with the pitching coach and the guys in charge Aaron Baboone. and Cashman. Both need to go ASAP.. Change is needed now,
It started in Spring with Cole and Gil. Now Schmidt needs TJ. If this team had all of their resources they would run away with the division.
I hope they don’t trade any prospects now.Just let the season play out and see where they land.
