10:17pm: Winans will indeed be recalled in the corresponding move, Sherman reports.
10:03pm: The Yankees are designating reliever Rico Garcia for assignment, reports Joel Sherman of The New York Post. They’ll promote a fresh arm to take his spot in the bullpen tomorrow. The 40-man roster count drops to 39.
Garcia’s stint on the roster lasted a few days and one game. The Yanks had claimed him off waivers from the Mets during the All-Star Break. The 31-year-old righty tossed 2 2/3 innings during tonight’s bullpen game in Atlanta. He allowed three runs on as many hits and a pair of walks. Garcia surrendered a three-run homer to Ozzie Albies that quickly broke the game open in what would eventually be a 7-3 loss.
After throwing 53 pitches, Garcia would have been unavailable for the next few days. He’s out of options, so the Yankees couldn’t send him to the minors. As the eighth man in the bullpen, he gets bumped off so they can make a move tomorrow. Bringing up Allan Winans as a long reliever makes the most sense.
Winans and Michael Arias, who is pitching in High-A, are the only healthy pitchers on the 40-man roster who can be recalled unless someone else is going on the injured list. Clayton Beeter and Jayvien Sandridge have each been optioned within the past 15 days; Brent Headrick is on the Triple-A injured list.
Garcia had worked 4 2/3 scoreless innings over two appearances with the Mets earlier this month. He’d missed plenty of bats in Triple-A before being called up. Garcia struck out 27.4% of batters faced across 30 1/3 minor league frames, but he also walked nearly 15% of opponents. He’ll likely be placed back on waivers in the next few days.
A bullpen game after the AS break? Another Boondoggle! I am starting to come to the opinion, the Yankees such sell at the deadline and retool for next year. 3/5 of the rotation is gone. The BP is a mess. Half the lineup is a blackhole. Even if they get to the playoff, they will never get far with this pitching.
I thought the same thing about the bullpen game.
You’re not wrong, Raven. And we know Cashman will do whatever he has to in order to get in the playoffs. But, he will compromise in whatever move it is and go with whomever is the cheaper option.
IMHO, anything less than Castro/Duran , or Suarez/Kelly (or Gallen), will be a compromise.
I think the bullpen game is because Cam Shlittler was having bicep pain. The pitching is a mess this year.
Yeah, I heard that, Joe. Thankfully, they said the results were negative, so hopefully he recovers well. But, shouldn’t they have put Stroman or Warren in then? I just don’t get the logic. Or, call up someone for a spot start. I just don’t get the way the Yankees operate anymore.
And Vivas should’ve been benched or sent down. That really irritates me. More lazy game play under General Boone.
I’m not quite as bothered about the bullpen game as I am about Vivas. He should have been benched immediately and sent down after the game. I am curious why Candelario hasn’t been called. Any idea on that?
No, sir. I don’t think his numbers at AAA are very good, so perhaps that’s why?
You hit that on the head. A bullpen game after the break looks like signs of disaster. And without Aaron Judge this would be a long long season in the Bronx. Selling is so Un-Yankee like but it’s the smartest move. Trade Goldy,Bellinger, and whoever else isn’t going to be back next year and get a prospect or 2 plus some lotto tickets.
The Mets dropped Scherzer and Verlander and got a decent return. I could see something similar with the Yanks.
During the game, the Braves announcers said Boone decided on the bullpen game due to scheduled starter, Max Fried, dealing with more blisters on his pitching hand. Braves fans should remember that being a recurring issue for Fried.
Boone and Volpe make quite the pair
Better not be badmouthing Volpe, Boone will come at you…
“Volpe is f’ing elite!!!”
Aw. Braves, especially albies, are disappointed he was released.
Great signing by Trashman!!! It is so embarrassing for such a rich franchise to have to rely on a bunch of AAA pitchers for a BULLPEN GAME right after the four-day All-Star BREAK!
Who is eally responsible for these buzarro player moves and roster decisions? And why haven’t they been fired, Hal?
I usually have some explanation for what they do, but I can not make sense of why you would pretty much just surrender a game right out of the break.
The analytics department told Boone to do so, so he followed orders…
Everything you said… adding that it also burns the bullpen in the first game of the series.
When are they going to DFA Cash?
I just read an article as to why Buffoon didn’t bench Visas after the base running fiasco. Boone responded that he benches when players don’t run hard and that Vivas was “deked” by the 3rd baseman. How about benching for ignoring the 3rd base coach? He had a clear vision and signaled Vivas to slide. Instead, Vivas slowed and walked right into the tag. This took the bat out of Judge’s hands with two on the bases. There is no discipline if coaches can be ignored without consequence.
That was such stupid baserunning coming from a roster bubble player like Vivas. By sliding, you place pressure on the thirdbaseman to induce an errant catch. Incredible throw from Acuna, Jr.
I loved listening to Joe Girardi on the telecast making it clear how that Vivas play was not only acceptable but how their baserunning is something the team really needs to tighten up. When a team has numerous roster needs to address the last thing that needs to happen is garbage baseball fundamentals. That’s on the coaching staff to ensure players aren’t committing those types of brainfarts. Then again I thought it was looking grim to begin with when I saw that Hamilton was the opener. Throwing in a AAA pitcher after him was basically waving the white flag.
Girardi would’ve drop kicked him on the field.
So let’s be honest here. Cashman can trade the organizations top end or multiple high end prospects for a 33yo rental third baseman who strikes out every other at bat and is below average defensively and maybe he helps them win a few games down the stretch but this team with all the holes to plug does not look like a World Series team not to forget Boone is still the coach and Cashman with his lineup construction is still the manager. This team needs to sell and go with youth down the stretch. Move Grisham and any bullpen arm that they don’t intend on keeping past this season like Devin Williams. Bring up Spencer Jones and Everson Pereira. Bring up Lombard at end of the season to play third and if they do get into the playoffs it’s as much a crap shoot with the youth ad it would be if they traded for Suarez. Less pressure also and great experience for younger kids. Next year try to get under the high cap hit and plug holes and hope starters stay healthy and make a big push but this year they have to be smart and take a step back and sell.
To an extend I agree with you. But the problem is Cashman and Boone bottom line. The BP scenario at this stage is very bad, 3rd is a joke. The rookies in minors Might do better. I think jettison out the current 3rd b platooners and pay for another bat before trade deadline, NOT Arenado. If no WS this year B & C be gone!
Everyone is enamored with Suarez’ power, and I get why. But, this is a similar mistake Cashman makes every time. A guy who can launch HRs but also strikes out a lot. However, Suarez’ numbers with RISP are really good, which should help a lot. His defense makes me a bit cautious though.
Although I do think Suarez is an upgrade (obviously), I really am starting to like the idea of the switch-hitting 3b Castro as a more balanced-hitting, solid defense alternative.
Why don’t the Yankees bring up Carlos Lagrange, throws 100+ mph!?
