The Angels are in agreement with infielder Cavan Biggio on a minor league deal, according to the MLB.com transaction log. He’s been assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake. Biggio was released by the Royals last week.
Biggio broke camp with K.C. after signing an offseason minor league contract. He appeared in 37 games, hitting .174/.296/.246 with one home run in 83 trips to the plate. He had hit far better in Triple-A, slashing .285/.375/.464 over 41 contests. Biggio’s lack of production against big league pitching pushed him off the roster last week, as the Royals needed to open a 40-man spot to activate Hunter Harvey from the injured list.
The lefty-hitting Biggio has been a well below-average hitter in consecutive seasons. He combined for a .197/.314/.303 line across 225 plate appearances with three teams a year ago. Biggio continues to take a lot of walks, as he has throughout his career. His power production has plummeted since his first two seasons with the Blue Jays. Biggio’s extremely patient approach also comes with strikeouts, as he also takes a lot of pitches within the strike zone.
Biggio has more experience at second base than any other position. He only logged 10 1/3 innings there for Kansas City. The Royals used him most frequently in the corner outfield and at first base with occasional second and third base work. The Angels have Nolan Schanuel, Christian Moore and Luis Rengifo at the non-shortstop infield positions. They acquired Oswald Peraza as a defensive option off the bench, while Niko Kavadas is on the MLB roster as a lefty-swinging first baseman.
They love taking other teams scraps.
It reminds me of their Cole Tucker pickup
Didn’t the dodgers also sign him last year?
Only 6 games back, and they haven’t done anything
Miraculous
At some point the Astros gonna throw this kid a bone?
This is organization #6 for Biggio. Can he get to 10 next year? He still hasn’t played at AAA for the Rockies, Marlins, or White Sox.
Always liked Biggio… feel like he wasn’t handled properly by the Jays early on in his career.
Out of the frying pan….
His #s early in his career(2019) were inflated by juiced ball. Hes slightly below average with glove except for in RF which is a position DRS is very lenient on.
All and all he can make contact with MLB pitching, he just doesn’t hit all that well when doing so(with a normal ball). He has 2 things going for him, versatility and his last name.
If he can just get the batting average up 40 points or so he would be a good MLB player. His OBP is always solid and he is still fairly versatile in the field as well
If he brought his avg up 40 points he’d be a utility player on bench of a small market team. While hes versatile in the field, hes ot good anywhere. He doesn’t hit for power and isn’t particularly fast, hes gotten numerous chances due to his name and inflated 2019 #s.
What?? No way, he has gotten numerous chances thanks to his career 340 OBP!
As I said if he could raise that BA up 40 or so he wouldn’t be getting released by anyone as that would translate to a 360-380 OBP and there are a handful (if any) bench players at that level. Sure he may not be a standout in the field but he is versatile and far from being a liability with the glove.
He has -DRS at every position hes played except RF. Yes he is actually a liability with his glove.
Nah, it’s minimal at best. Look at all his #s like fielding % and it’s strong to relatively strong everywhere except 3rd base.
A guy isn’t a liability if he plays adequate defense and is versatile enough to play multiple positions. Especially from a bench role.
I might add he also sports a career 375 OBP at triple A including a 418 clip at the moment in Utah to go along with the career 335 OBP in the majors so he is a worthy bench player in the big show.
If nothing else, he is definitely nowhere near as bad as a lot on here make him out to be
Average OBP this season is .319 his career OBP is .339. He can’t field any position for positive value, provides no power, and no speed.
Id take a bench player who has at least one facet of game where they add decent value. Again Biggio provides name recognition and some versatility. Versatility should be used very loosely as he does not field any of those positions for + value, hes just appeared in MLB games at those positions.
We can agree to disagree. Again I don’t say he is a great player by any stretch my point was more or less that he is definitely an adequate bench player.
The Angels seem to agree more with you though as they have been in no hurry to bring him up even though they are finishing off another lost season
Hes not very adequate of a bench player. You pointed out one thing he does roughly avg. Everything else hes below replacement, including fielding which is huge for a bench player. A bench player who does not field well nor do they hit well is in no way ideal. They provide no plus side pinch hitting or as a defensive replacement.
No he actually is. Do you know roughly what the average major leaguer batting average or obp is??
In most seasons it’s in the range of .241 to 249. Obp roughly 315 to 325. That’s ALL mlb players.
So just on that stat alone compared to all others he definitely fits the bill of a bench player.
When you factor in how many MLB players can actually play all the positions he is capable of, he is of definite value. Sure he isn’t necessarily strong in those spots but he isn’t a major liability.
I don’t think you are comparing him to all players and in every category that’s all.
Yes I actually mentioned it above. And OBP is the only thing he is average at. That is by no means an ideal bench bat. A player off of bench ideally can either hit or can play defense so that they can be used as pinch hitter or defensive replacement. Biggio helps with neither.
Minor league deal with Angels: career over
…where mediocre careers go to die.
insanity
Craig’s using up all his favors
Does this mean they’re moving on from Brandon Drury?
@orange2001
Another flame out from the Jays org.
He can’t hit anymore. So he’s only useful as a backup defensive infielder. But he keeps getting chances anyway.
Where were you when Kennedy was shot.
Where were you when spiezio hit his threes run homer in game 6.
Remember the titans. Remember the 02 angels. Remember
@gold masters
I was not in the grassy knoll. Wasn’t there. Wasn’t me. Nope. Nuh-huh.
Too much?
three
He can’t hit anymore, he’s only getting chances because of his last name.
When you have no organizational depth you constantly sign cast offs.
He’ll block absolutely nobody and will replace absolutely nobody of note in AAA.
Sooo you’re telling me there’s a chance….
On another note, Guzman is 3-4 with a double tonight.
Something might have clicked in this dude. Time will tell if it’s real or a mirage.
Yeah, southern league player of the month in July now a hot start in AAA.
The Angels definitely do not need this pile of … Biggio. Also totally useless to the team’s needs.
aaa infield is somewhat full, but outfield is thin. rada, flint and… kavadas? biggio will get some corner OF work until the seasons over
Rada, Flint,Lugo
Once again, the Angels made the wrong moves at the Trade Deadline.
They should have been dealing veterans on expiring contracts and loading their team and system with great, young talent with big upsides for a serious run in the AL West in 2026.
Do the Angels have any kind of a plan?!
It surely does not look like it!
Other than Jansen, who could they have offered in a trade that would have brought back anybody of any significance??
Expiring contracts: Anderson, Rengifo, Hendricks, and Moncada. I’m betting the Halos got almost zero interest for ANY of them.
Certainly no “great, young talent” was forthcoming.
Jansen was pretty adamant about his desire to stay, so that about wraps up the deadline possibilities.
@johnnyangel. Might’ve been able to get a international signing. It certainly wouldn’t hurt. My guess is they might keep Jansen. I think he wants to close, and stay in California. You could take the padres, and the dodgers out of the running.
