The Angels announced that they have recalled infielder Niko Kavadas and right-hander Víctor Mederos from Triple-A Salt Lake. In corresponding moves, they have placed outfielder Gustavo Campero on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain and designated right-hander Shaun Anderson for assignment.
Anderson was just selected to the roster yesterday. On Sunday, starter Jack Kochanowicz had lasted just three innings. Carson Fulmer came in from the bullpen to mop up five innings of long relief. With Fulmer likely unavailable for a few days, the Halos optioned out Kochanowicz and selected Anderson to give them a fresh arm.
In last night’s game against the Dodgers, the Angels had a 7-0 lead through seven. Starter José Soriano had put up six zeroes and then Luis García put up one more. They tried to spare their high-leverage arms by putting Anderson in to pitch the eighth. Unfortunately, he only recorded two outs, allowing four earned runs along the way. That included a solo home run to Shohei Ohtani and a three-run shot to Max Muncy.
That performance has led to Anderson getting bumped off the roster approximately 24 hours after being added. He is out of options, so the Angels had to remove him from the 40-man entirely. With the trade deadline having passed, he’ll be on waivers shortly. He cleared waivers a couple of months back and could do so again. If that comes to pass, he’ll have the right to elect free agency since he has a previous career outright. He has 163 1/3 big league innings under his belt with a 6.39 earned run average.
Mederos is starting for the Halos tonight. As mentioned, Kochanowicz was optioned out. Also, Tyler Anderson has back stiffness, per Sam Blum of The Athletic. It’s unclear if this is just a spot start or if Mederos will having a rotation role for a while. Mederos will be pitching on just three days rest, per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. Interim manager Ray Montgomery says he thinks Mederos can still take on a fairly normal workload since he only tossed 52 pitches last time out.
The 24-year-old Mederos has a limited major league track record but is having a decent season in Triple-A. He has tossed 87 2/3 Triple-A innings with a 3.39 ERA, 18.6% strikeout rate, 8.9% walk rate and 40.2% ground ball rate.

Thats not enough, someone needs to file a restraining order on Perry’s behalf. He can’t seem to quit this man.
@bkbk. Its that sick mullet. That’s why I didn’t care about chafin or garcia something perry should’ve done when they opted out instead of the 15 hot garbage adds before. It might’ve kept them closer to .500 if that was the goal.
He does look sick.
Maybe Chafin is like Shaun Anderson Narcan.
The Dodgers can’t beat the Angels this season.
You’d think Perry would’ve called up someone who can play outfield (i.e., Paris or Lugo) to replace Campero as the team’s backup outfielder. But then again, it’s Perry.
@orange2001. Im sure lugo is coming soon probably after this game.
Im gonna go with Paris over Lugo.
@kellin. I haven’t followed Paris minor league stats since he was demoted. Lugo seems like he has a better swing or atleast smoother it’s like digging for a smaller turd in a cat box at this point.
@Kellin I think Paris has struggled since going back down. I think he might be injured also? I think Lugo might be the right call here.
Yes Paris got hurt diving for a ball on July 3rd and hasn’t played since.
If an Angel outfield falls in the field of play, does he make a sound?
It doesn’t matter. Any replacement they add stinks.
The problem is what happens if they lose one of their outfielders today? Yesterday, Jo Adell was thrown out of the game and Campero got injured. I guess they’ll just move Rengifo from the infield to the outfield…
Kavadas does stand in the outfield, he’s been in left & right field for over 200 inning this season.
I do see that the Angels have been trying him out in the corner outfield spots at triple-A along with some third base. He’s still not someone that instills a lot of faith defensively, considering he’s been predominantly a first baseman his entire minor league career.
@orange2001. Also the fact he’s like Adam dunn a k or hr with bad defense. I dont care about him as far as we traded garcia for 4 players, but atleast lugo might take a walk, steal a bag, and play decent defense.
Shaun Anderson makes sure a fan or two in the outfield seats gets a souvenir each game.
Truly a man of the people.
@halosheavenjj. The depth is sad. Still wish they got atleast a couple players back at the deadline, now next season hit the rule 5 draft. I dont think the roster spot for players that aren’t quite ready matters when you call of guys of the same ilk or guys that are washed. If they survive we have depth.
Agreed. This team is very fortunate to be sitting anywhere near .500. There’s no pitching depth.
Although I am interested in Mederos and hope he gets a few starts. He changed his arm slot a couple of months ago and looks pretty good right now.
There it is. Figured Anderson would get DFA’d today.
no strikeouts or grounders? sounds like an Anaheim Angel to me.
@brocnessmonster. If your trying to say he sucks. Yes we know.
Wow, Mr Anderson sure left one out for ohtani to hit out. Shaun must be a big fan of show lie ohtani.
I like Mederos. I like Jack k. I like silseth.
Remember the 02 angels.
Is there someone on the Angels roster that you don’t like?
It’s hard to like Kochanowicz considering how brutal he’s been this season.
He is a garbage time pitcher. But wow last night he was opening the door to let them back in.
