Cubs To Place Miguel Amaya On Injured List With Sprained Ankle

By Leo Morgenstern | August 13, 2025 at 9:10pm CDT

Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya had to be carted off the field during tonight’s matchup with the Blue Jays. He hurt his left ankle running to first base in the eighth inning. After the game, manager Craig Counsell told reporters (including Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times) that Amaya’s X-rays thankfully came back negative for a broken bone, but the backstop still sprained his ankle and will require a trip to the IL. While he has avoided the worst, this is nonetheless a tough blow for Amaya, who was playing in his first game back after suffering an oblique strain in May.

Chicago’s decision to keep Reese McGuire on the roster after reinstating Amaya now seems almost eerily prescient. The Cubs signed the veteran backup catcher to a minor league deal in the offseason and selected his contract when Amaya first went on the IL in May. One might have expected they would designate McGuire for assignment went Amaya returned, but instead, it was utility man Jon Berti who lost his roster spot.

Now the Cubs can simply go back to the catching setup they had been using for the past few months, a setup that was working perfectly well. Carson Kelly will remain the primary catcher with McGuire as his backup. Kelly has cooled down after a red-hot start, but he’s still hitting perfectly well for his position, as is McGuire. The two combined for a .723 OPS and 103 wRC+ during Amaya’s first IL stint, and they’ve both played strong defense behind the plate as well.

None of this is to say the Cubs won’t miss Amaya. The 26-year-old produced an .819 OPS and 126 wRC+ in 27 games prior to his oblique injury. He has a .797 OPS and 122 wRC+ in 83 games dating back to last July. A high BABIP and a low xwOBA suggest that degree of success is unsustainable, and the jury is still out on his defense, but that’s just the thing: Amaya is four years younger than Kelly or McGuire, with a lot less experience under his belt. He still has room to grow, and the Cubs want to figure out what kind of role he can play for their club over the next several years. It’s a lot harder to do that when he’s stuck on the shelf.

The Cubs have not yet addressed Amaya’s timeline, but it is certainly possible, and probably quite likely, that he’ll be back before the end of the year. Once rosters expand from 26 to 28 in September, it will be easier for the team to roster all three of Kelly, McGuire, and Amaya, should McGuire still be playing well if/when Amaya is ready to return.

That injury looked nasty. Felt bad for him being carted off in tears. Thank God it isn’t as bad as it looked. Although hah part of it I guess is Amaya isn’t exactly the most physically fit looking guy so him falling to the ground so violently maybe made it look worse than it was.

The way he was carrying on, we thought he broke his leg. Even a dope like me once had a sprained ankle, and yeah, it hurt, but I wasn’t a professionally conditioned athlete. He’s probably still yelling.

They look smart for keeping McGuire on the roster. Amaya has always been injury prone. I guess the term for that is snake bit. They recently signed a speed guy for the 26 man for the playoffs. Wonder if he gets the call early.

The way they’re playing I don’t even know if the Cubs are going to make a Wild Card spot. Brewers continue to dance circles around the Cubs.

They hold the top seeding and three teams have to catch them, the worst of which is 5.5 games behind them.

Realistically, the Padres and Mets will finish with better records than the Cubs. They have more talent. The Cubs will need to hold off the Reds for the last WC spot. The four games in Cincinnati Sept. 18-21 might wind up being decisive in that regard. I’m thinking I might go to Cincy for those games if my health permits.

OMG. Aside from everything else that is wrong with that comment, the old Cub-fan belief that playing .500 is REALLY GOOD rears its ugly head.

The Cubs will be 4-9 against the Brewers in a few days, and out of the wild card. Will you be letting the good times roll then?

Why do you root for the Cubs to be worse if you are a Cubs fan?

@Manfred: I don’t root for them to be worse. I don’t see how you can interpret my comments that way. I root for them to be better–but I am not blind to their flaws. What would be the purpose in pretending they are better than they are? They ARE going to finish with a worse record than the Brewers, Phillies. Dodgers, Padres, and Mets–that is just a fact. Whether I say it or not will not affect reality.

I guess guys like you think that being a fan of a team means being rah-rah, and never saying anything critical. And I guess that you think, superstitiously, that what you or I or anyone says can affect the outcome of games.

I get the sense that you are not a kid, in part from your name, but that is a kid attitude.

He was really busting it to first with a runner on at a critical time in the game and hit the base awkwardly with his knee locked…hard to tell him not to.

I like the stones and the decisiveness. Hoyer tends to make too much of a virtue of not being reactive to events, but sometimes that’s what you gotta do. Glad he realizes this is one of those times.

Maybe he will start in right in place of Tucker tomorrow, day game after night game and all.

Thanks for your opinion there “doctor.” Just rolling an ankle without any real damage can be painful and its not like all ankle sprains are exactly the same either. it sucks pretty bad to get injured in a fluke accident in the first game off the IL as a young player trying to establish himself as an mlb regular too. It costs nothing to refrain from being a callous judgmental dick. You should try it some time.

‘my opinion and $10. 00 will buy you a cup of coffee… but speaking as an ER nurse, if you’ve ever had a ‘high’ ankle sprain or partial ligament tear… you’d have wished you had broken a tib or fib instead.
The worse news is that uncomplicated fractures will heal predictably in 6 or 8+ weeks…
but a badly stretched ligament heals like crap. Over-stretch a spring – it will never return to its original or reciprocal tension – leaving a loose or lax joint, often requiring some corrective procedure later on.
Ligaments are a very disagreeable tissue type.

      All are concerned, I’m sure…

      Blessings

Third and second nobody out and all they need to do was put ball in play to score at least run. Your cubs or flubs if u prefer are not worthy of any playoffs.
