It appears there’s some behind-the-scenes drama in Arizona. Per a report from Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, some players on the Diamondbacks are frustrated with second baseman Ketel Marte for his tendency to miss games. Most often, that appears to be due to health, though a situation around the All-Star break where Marte was absent from the club was also seemingly a source of discontent.
Marte is clearly an asset to the Diamondbacks when on the field. He has been a very productive player for the Snakes for several years now. That has not stopped as he has pushed into his early 30s. In fact, he’s arguably been at his best lately. Last year, he hit 36 home runs, drew walks in 11.1% of his plate appearances and limited his strikeouts to an 18.2% clip. He slashed .292/.372/.560 for a 151 wRC+. He stole seven bases and got strong grades for his glovework. FanGraphs credited him with 6.3 wins above replacement, tying his personal best mark in that category. Only nine position players bested him there.
This year, his production has been similar. He has slashed .296/.398/.557 for a 162 wRC+ and has been credited with 4.2 fWAR, in 47 fewer games than last year. Both Tuesday and Wednesday in Arlington, he hit go-ahead home runs in the ninth inning which ultimately proved to be game-winners.
The issue is more about him deciding not to take the field. Marte does have a notable injury history. In 2021, he was limited to just 90 games by strains of both hamstrings. Since then, smaller absences have limited him to the range of 135-150 games per year. Per Piecoro, Marte asked for a day off in the final week of the 2024 season, which “irked” teammates. This year, he “raised eyebrows” when he asked to not play the final game before the break, but then participated in the All-Star game itself. Piecoro contrasts this type of behavior with that of Corbin Carroll, who has been playing through a broken bone in his hand because he feels he owes it to the team.
Manager Torey Lovullo addressed the situation, after Piecoro’s article came out, with MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM and The Burns & Gambo Show on Arizona Sports. Generally, Lovullo defended Marte on the topic of knowing his own body and when it needs a break. “Ketel Marte has a massive heart. He is extremely emotional. He loves to play. He wants to be in the middle of everything with his teammates every single day. The body doesn’t always function the right way. And sometimes we got to listen to what he says and do what’s best for him which, in turn, will give us the best results for his production.”
One incident in particular seems to go beyond health, however. Marte was placed on the restricted list on July 18th, the first day after the All-Star break, as the Snakes were set to play the Cardinals. It was reported around that time that Marte was away from the club due to a recent break-in at his Arizona home, though Piecoro now notes that Marte was in the Dominican Republic for most of the break. Per John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports, Marte was supposed to travel with Carroll and Eugenio Suárez back from the All-Star game but decided to take a vacation in the D.R. “knowing he would miss a game or two,” in Gambadoro’s words. His teammates didn’t know about his planned absence and he didn’t find out about the burglary until he was in the D.R.
It’s possible Marte’s head was elsewhere, even before the break-in. There was a much-publicized incident in late June, just a few weeks before the All-Star break, wherein he was visibly brought to tears during a game against the White Sox in Chicago. Marte later told members of the media, including the Associated Press, that a fan was heckling him about his late mother. Marte’s mother passed away in a car accident in 2017. “A fan was up on the dugout shouting things about my mother,” Marte said. “He was like, ‘Last night I sent a message to your mother.’” Marte said he had been in Chicago to play the Cubs when his mother died, which gave the situation extra resonance. The fan was given an indefinite ban from all major league parks.
Lovullo was also asked about the All-Star break incident on The Burns & Gambo Show, linked above. “I was unaware of the break-in,” Lovullo said. “I was unaware of the timing of the break-in. I was unaware of what the intentions were, what plane he was on. I just became aware of him not being ready to play a baseball game on the day, on the morning, afternoon of our first baseball game.”
At that time, the Diamondbacks were still fighting to stay in contention. By the middle of July, it still wasn’t clear whether they would go into the deadline as buyers or sellers. Marte reported to the team and was reinstated from the restricted list on July 20th, missing two games. The Snakes won those two games, incidentally, but it’s understandable that his teammates would get upset about him missing key games with the season on the line. From there, the club slumped a bit and ended up selling. They traded away Josh Naylor, Merrill Kelly, Suárez, Shelby Miller and Randal Grichuk ahead of the deadline.
It’s certainly an awkward spot for the skipper. It would be fair to criticize him for not being more insistent with Marte about getting into the lineup more often, especially if it’s rankling other teammates. Oddly, Lovullo said “I don’t know what’s happening inside of our clubhouse” when discussing the situation to MLB Network Radio. On the other hand, Piecoro relays that some feel he could push Marte too hard and risk Marte “sulking or shutting down,” in Piecoro’s words.
The question now is what comes next. Piecoro and Gambadoro both float the idea of a trade but also downplay the possibility. That’s a natural speculation when rumors of discord come out of a clubhouse. The baseball world just saw plenty of ink spilled about disagreements between Rafael Devers and the Red Sox. Though he was once seemingly entrenched as a franchise player on a long-term deal, he was flipped to the Giants in the wake of those stories.
On the other hand, scuffles like this quickly blow over sometimes. Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil of the Mets got into a fight during a game in 2021 but they put that behind them and have been teammates for many years since then.
Marte is signed through the 2031 season. He is owed $102.5MM after this year. That includes an $11.5MM player option for 2031. Given his talents, plenty of clubs would be interested in acquiring him at that price point. However, it’s also possible teams may wonder if they would be acquiring a somewhat injury-prone player who is moving towards his mid-30s and who may not have 100% commitment to the game. Marte’s deal does not have no-trade protection but he will have 10-and-5 rights a few days into the 2026 campaign.

as diehard dbacks fan hes not going anywhere
Could have the machinations of a “Ke’Bryan deal” in the Offseason… but probably not. Somebody would take all the contract and the D-backs could get out from under it AND procure some talent.
Get out from “under” a 6 WAR player on a reasonable contract? What?
Marte is THE BEST second baseman in the game right now there’s no way they trade him for a ham sandwich
If there truly is dissent in the desert… and his caliber and contract would play into the talent haul. Again, not likely to happen.
Depends tho. There are some ham samwitches to absolutely die for
Not sure about dissent in the desert but dysentery in the dessert is truly a thing
Desertion and dissent in the desert – oh my!
Deflowered in the tower – oh my!
Ahhh, delicious processed salty meat filled with nitrites and nitrates.
The Mariners already traded him once for a Han sandwich, can be done again.
That ham sandwich was 2 years of good Jean segura (who became JP) and Mitch haniger we still fared out well
If that Han sandwich was ordered a la carte and not part of a combo meal would that be a Han Solo? Thank you ill let myself out.
Fission or fusion?
The Mariners traded him because he was uncoachable. He thought he was the best SS in the world and would try some showy throws when just a throw would work. Which in turn turned into errors. Seattle gave him many chances and tried to work him through it and grow up but things went too far.
They probably called him up too early. He had the skill but not the maturity. Sounds like the maturity and the ego are becoming a problem. Hated to see a talent like his go but was glad because of the issues it was causing. I guess the issues can get some gray hair but still be issues that were hidden away.
Gwynning—
Although the comparison to Ke’Bryan is strange as Marte is a great player, Hayes not so much.
I get it Pete, and I don’t think many people understood what I meant. Just suggesting that a contract-swallowing deal (like Ke’Bryan) could be in place if Ketel is out of favor in the desert, and the potential for a return haul is there. He’s a fantastic player with a decent contract who should, *if marketed*, bring back alot of talent.
Ok..sure as a red sox fan I can estimate hes worth 2 mlb pitchers and 2 minor leaguers..at most lol good luck
He shouldn’t be! You should really try to hold onto guys like Ketel Marte. And I’ll be honest, this whole article I find myself siding with the guy.
Too many players in MLB play through nagging injuries and watch their production slump as a result. I’d rather take a guy 100% 6 days a week than a guy 75/80% for all 7.
He needs to be with the team even if he doesn’t play. Unless something personal that required him to be away. And it doesn’t sound like that was the case when he went for a vacation after the AS break. You just don’t take vacations during the season. That’s what the offseason is for. And for Lovullo to say he doesn’t know what’s going on in the clubhouse. Really? I thought the clubhouse was his responsibility.
I totally agree with you but at the same time it does make sense that a player may know what is best for them (and hence possibly best for the team). Jobs offer “sick” days generally. It is only because it is a sport, because of fan investment, and because fans are jealous about the money the players make that this would be an issue really. Perhaps he could have gone about things differently around the break. Some players seem to suffer statistically because they won’t take off days enough. But obviously colleagues often get upset. There is more to life than baseball/work.
Seattle traded him because of maturity concerns. He was very immature and not a great teammate. This sounds like he is immature and not a great teammate. Not being 100% is fine taking days off is fine. Not being with the team is not unless sick. He could sit out the game and maybe pinch hit late in the game.
The idea people are jealous of the money is laughable. Most fans have grow up with players masking absurd money. I am old enough to remember a lot of players that had to work in the off season. An insurance salesman by day team ace by night.
To generalize fans typically are jealous towards players when it comes to the way they look at their careers (jobs). We expect them to always do what it seems to us like they should because they make so much money and work half a year technically (training is work towards work). More generally people who grow up with little money relatively (or don’t feel like they were gifted) are envious towards people who have more resources which is understandable psychologically but they look at everything as if money plays a bigger role in life than it does (it does play a very big role but it doesn’t mean people don’t deal with the same stuff practically everyone does.)
We treat it like they are giving their lives to some great cause and need to be there so badly for the team when in reality it’s just a sport. It is only because we ourselves are so invested and/or because we envy them half-consciously. Most of us don’t treat our jobs that way.
Taking a day off for load management is fine, I agree that players know their own body better than a manager. Leaving the team to go on vacation while your team is on the brink of selling ain’t that though
Thats fair but its one thing to need a day off and watch the boys from the bench..this dude was chillin in the DR…his teammates have every right to question his commitment if that’s true
Something is fishy here. Yellow alert on Marte. Wants to go home during the season?
Seems as if the guy is a master manipulator, caused by a lack of maturity.
As a diehard Red Sox fan, I was saying the same thing about Devers as recently as May.
Devers is poison.
Sure thing, tough guy. Do you think this snowflake is too scared to respond ? Weird.
New information has been presented. The holiday changes things considerably to the negative. It wasn’t just about the break in. Position amended accordingly. It’s good how us humans can do that.
Despite that negativity, the snowflake in me is certainly feeling sorry for the guy. The dude sounds like he is struggling. No good at all.
You get paid to say snowflake or something?
😂
😂
The Abominable Snowflake.
Snowflakes? Yeah, those snowflakes are definitely not internet tough guys like you. Get a hammer for your keyboard and buy the lifetime warranty. Go warrior!
Ok for starters it didn’t snow anywhere with a MLB team in July
Snow doesn’t have opinions, it’s frozen water crystals
Individual water crystals also don’t have opinions
So listen, buddy, if you’re telling me that you had a full length conversation
With ice crystals
Without opinions
In the comments section of MLBTR
Perhaps we don’t need to take your comments too seriously.
Snowflakes are all different. No two are the same. Just like people no two are the same. I didn’t comment on the AS break vacation because I really didn’t care. This is a guy who had maturity problems in Seattle and it seems those issues are issues again. Not sure how thinking it was OK for the guy to take a mini vacay to the DR makes you a snowflake though.
Seems like the Dominican Republic is a poor choice for snow
Research shows that language use such as snowflakes, lib*#%, etc. is associated with personalities that demonstrate “callousness, manipulation, and even enjoyment of others’ suffering.”
I had to stop reading at the third “snakes”.
They scare you?
Indiana Jones also hated “snakes”
“Why’d it have to be snakes?”
Asps. You go first, Indy
“we gotta get these damn snakes off this plane” – Samuel L. Jackson
The name’s Plisskin
I don’t know no Snakes
Best one!
Me too. Surprisingly he wasn’t mentioned as the keystone.
The cornerstone at the keystone! Let’s get stoned!
Not as aggravating as the incessant use of the word “clip” in these articles.
Sounds like you have a clip on your shoulder.
15 yards. Clipping on #81 on the offense.
To make that call do you know what clipping is? Don’t make the call if you don’t know the signal. That was always in my pregame. I was going to ask you what it was if you were a newer official. Made em study before working in my crew. By the way I was well liked so it wasn’t mean.
Let me know if he is gonna “CRACK THE ROSTER”
Kmart slithered out of town to hit the DR.
Dang sthneaky sthnakths
Semien and Walcott for Marte Dbacks couldn’t say no to #4 prospect in baseball.
They would say no to Semien’s contract.
RIIIIIGHT.
If he is truly the 4th best prospect in all of baseball you would never trade him for Marte.
4th prospect in baseball + salary dump for Marte is reasonable.
But I will drive to Jerry Dipotos house and have him trade all of our top 100 prospects to bring Ketel back.
4th best prospect in baseball is a mvp cy young contender. I’m not trading that to dump a old expensive guy for a less old less expensive guy who is still old and expensive and according to teammates not a great teammate.
I will be the fire extinguisher to prevent Jerry from burning down the farm again, his last name is dipoto not Preller
For as cool as it would be to bring ketel back it’s not worth giving up a guy like laz Montes or colt Emerson for marte who could fall off at any moment with his age
Montes is likely a dh or a weak outfielder at best. Lots of strike outs. Slow on bases. Hit into double plays. Sure he will hit hrs. The ideal player to trade if someone is thirsty for that power. Not saying for Marte but he’s not a untouchable prospect. Decade ago he would had more value. Teams finally started to learn though.
Montes will probably be our LFer next year unless we resign Randy. Not sure they will pay him what he wants though. We have some young pitchers to sign. I predict Gilbert Woo and Miller sign and Kirby is traded to a team in the East maybe Mets. Kade and that two way pitcher need to learn to spell his name will replace Kirby and Castillo who is traded this off season. George has a couple years.

Gotcha
Leave the dude alone. It was management who let the team down with bad decisions they didn’t miss the playoffs because of him we all need a day off or two from work
You know there’s going to be a paragraph about this incident in every article about Marte now on this site for at least the next ten months.
How did management fail the Dbacks? They got hit with injuries and poor play. They have been sporting a competitive team for a few years now. Ownership has been willing to spend in recent years
” some players on the Diamondbacks are frustrated ”
we have 25 guesses – any leads?
Probably some angry fantasy baseball league idiot.
Tommy Pham isn’t a diamondback…. Haha
I was about to say joc pederson but he already left Arizona
Gurriel is not a guy to mess with so I think he’s definitely angry and I bet naylor was angry before he left
Jose Herrera is another name to throw in
any and every single player that is actually upset with his injuries should all be DFAd immediately.
The writer did specifically mention Carroll playing with a broken hand.
Watch their games, I noticed something but didn’t know about the vacation issue.
I’m sure every team has it’s share of drama. It’s made a much bigger deal by click seeking journalists. Give it a break.
rondon
“I’m sure every team has it’s share of drama. It’s made a much bigger deal by click seeking journalists.”
It’s fans doing the clicking
And if it wasn’t on here, we wouldn’t be clicking. There’s a lot to write/comment about on here without blowing up stories for the sole purpose of creating drama.
Well
MLBTR isn’t really known for their writing or analysis.
They get clicks by appealing to the lower common denominators.
We’re both here commenting on it, which is all they need to make it worth their while, so why would they stop?
2nd on the team in bWAR by the way.
I think Marte has had like 2 whole days off all season not counting the days off surrounding the AS game and the robbery break in.
Lourdes Gurriel today posted that he supports Ketel in face of these reports. I think this is someone making a mountain out of a mole hill.
A Dick Mountain out of a Rich Hill?
What’s probably the main issue is asking out of the lineup the last game before AS break and then playing in the AS game and taking a “vacation” before returning from the AS game.
Eh, you’ve never asked for the day off before a holiday on Monday to take advantage of an extended weekend?? Feels like a small issue especially considering Lovullo likes to give out “scheduled off days” to his players anyway.
They have November through January.
@sedona – I have noticed a number of folks on here (as well as all of the Devers Drama threads) that conflate what it is like to be a highly paid professional athlete being paid millions to compete at the highest level for 8 months of the year with regular jobs. The standards and expectations and HR management approaches are simply not the same.
I don’t think that we know all of the facts in either case, but there is probably a bit of fire in the smoke. They can both be terrific guys, and yet still a headache in certain ways. Managing all of the personalities in a clubhouse is not easy and the dynamics change from year to year, and there is probably more to come in the Marte scenario unless they clamp down hard on leaks from here on out. The difference with Devers however is that we actually got to hear him come across as entitled and whiny with his own words, even if the he felt that he had his reasons for being upset on how things were handled.
Would you be OK if there was a sign up list for days off, so Luvello knows who is going to miss when?
@Baseball Bob – They plan out their days off in advance. Usually Sundays are chosen because they’re usually traveling after the Sunday day game and can maximize the rest. I’ve personally always hated it. I feel like giving players 2-3 days rest can hamper their muscles more than help players recover. Also with Grichuk and Pavin before the AS game, Lovullo couldn’t just bat Ketel or Carroll at DH.
I would imagine some of the “drama” portrayed involves the same people who could not run 10 steps in that young mans shoes. lost his Mom, has battled life’s hardships. Let the kid play his ball.
Special treatment, even for special players, does not go well in any team, in sports or otherwise. It also is not a good look that the Manager claims not to know what is going on in his clubhouse.
Special treatment for top talent goes on in every industry, not just sports.
Protecting the clubhouse is part of the manager’s job description. What purpose does it serve to the team to throw a productive player under the bus with the media?
You can’t expect 26 different personalities to like one another. I’m sure there are players on every team that dislike some of their teammates for whatever reason. This is the type of stuff that should never leave the clubhouse.
Special treatment, as long as it’s only awarded to the best, is incentive to be the best.
This sounds like a nothing burger
I wouldn’t want him on my team! He’s a wuss.
The source is the Arizona Repugnant. That “Newspaper” loves to post opinion articles on the front page like they are fact.
Why are people angry at him for missing time due to the mom incident and family issues? I wonder if there’s information the public doesn’t know about
That means just for fun let’s do marte trade proposals, mariners trade Cole young and Logan Evans in return for marte
Absolutely no way, no how
There almost certainly is.
He’s a thirty something adult who lost a parent eight years ago. That never gets easier, but this fan made one poorly-placed yo momma joke. It has been made out to be some kind of vicious attack on Marte and it wasn’t. On the surface I don’t see how that could justify missing work a month later.
Dude is burnt out. He’s your best player. Give him a minute. Y’all gave up anyway this year. So what he wanted a day off before the break. Anyone else here not white collar?
Yes. Tough living when you don’t want to go to work. 31 with 5 kids as well. He has got a bit going on.
He’s paid to play 162 games whether he feels good or not. If he can physically move around the infield and swing a bat he should play. Plenty of other guys regularly play 160+ games.
I get your point but last year only 9 guys played at least 160 games. This used to be true that there were a handful of guys on every team that played in every game but those days are in the past.
Two things can be true:
1) He’s the best 2nd baseman in the league and an elite player.
2) Missing games for vacation after playing in the ASG isn’t the best look.
He’s not going anywhere, I’d presume, but I can understand the frustration of teammates when an elite talent misses games for vacation while the team is fighting to stay in the playoff hunt.
I’m just a simple ai gm but if I was ai team president I would say misinformation. He wasn’t on vacation. He went and seen a sick relative. He didn’t make it back in time because of visa issues.
This ai description does not make Marte look good here.
@AI- I think the optics on that might be even worse… he can play in the ASG over visiting a sick relative, but it’s so important he misses regular season games?
Relative took a turn for the worse. Scary moments. I dunno and don’t care. If it was NY Soto LA Ohtani it would be a story. I was just making fun at the bs that they try to feed people. He didn’t miss regular season games. Visa issues kept him from being abke to play!!!!! He had every intention of making it back in time to play those games!!!!
He also made the tone deaf claim about $400,000 worth of stuff stolen from his home.
I would love to make $200 million playing baseball and be in position to lose $400,000 worth of jewelry.
That’s the real inflection point for me.
My Mets can’t trade for this guy, even if they like the player on the field. NYC would destroy him.
This is probably a blip imo. A source linked alleging he took a “vacation” to the dr after the asg was a sportswriter boomer-ranting on Twitter about marte being “coddled” and giving every appearance of having an axe to grind. For all we know he had family business there and it doesn’t seem like there’s any info on what he was up to during the visit.
While it may be the case that at least one of his teammates is feeling a certain kind of way about him that doesn’t mean it’s a widely shared feeling in the clubhouse or that the player or players venting anonymously to reporters are leaders or even popular in the clubhouse themselves. The whole thing reeks of click/rage-bait.
Boomer. Oh PUH-leeze.
Next.
He’s the best player on the team.
If he plays.
Ketel may be 1 but he no Grey Goose
Looks like the “report” originated from AZ Central, which is a bunch of bs artists posing as reporters. I would put ZERO stock in it.
AZ Central is that like performance art? Summer stock or community rep?
A White Sox fan didn’t heckle him about his late mother, he made generic “your mom” joke. Marte is a very unlikable athlete, this report isn’t surprising.
I’m sure the Dodgers would be willing to help lighten the salary load for the snakes, er, Diamondbacks.
Marte and Burns. We’ll take them and pay their salaries. We can even toss in Alex Call if necessary. It would free up so much cash for them to go all A.J. Preller in the off-season.
The LA Dodgers. They are givers.
That’s unfortunate timing if true. Would be like bellowing “yo mama wears combat boots” not realizing she was suffering PTSD from a long term deployment in the Battle of the Somme
Perhaps the source(s) is/are players that were traded at the deadline. Maybe they believe he is not mature enough at this stage of his career despite putting up numbers.
Shut up and dribble.
Good one. Same can be said to many aged keyboard warriors
@Soto / DDT – in the case of the posters on here, it is mostly “shut up and drivel”…
New York or LA bound
Anywhere but flyover country. Specially stinky Detwa
Did that hit a nerve ? Or are you Ketel Marte’s agent ?
Yes
Instead of labeling him a snowflake or not, it does seem that he may need a mental break from time to time. 162 plus spring training is a grind physically and mentally. It stands to reason if he is a very emotional guy, that he may need more down time than others. So what? Everyone has their limits. I think it’s best to just acknowledge that and work with it as best you can. If it were physical limits, nobody would say a word.
I have worked in and around the game and I always found it odd how players were criticized when they were hurt or even mentioned an injury affecting their game. I liken it to breaking a reporters hands and then criticizing them for being slow to turn out a report. Of course injuries affect performance, as does life’s challenges.
Torey Lovullo admitting he doesn’t know what’s going on in his own clubhouse is the biggest indictment I took from this article.
Players taking days off due to injuries is not uncommon. Luis Robert in Chicago and before him Yoan Moncada made that a weekly issue for years. And by injuries I mean them saying they had an issue and then staying “hurt” for longer than anticipated. Guy by the name of Anthony Rendon made a career of it.
But bottom line, NO Manager in baseball should be unaware of the comings and goings in the clubhouse. That’s HIS house. Nobody else would have more time and access to that area, not the GM or the owner.
Torey is an emotional nice guy but he needs to get tougher. These boys need a man in charge who they can be respectful of, not just a friend. If a manager keeps letting a guy like Marte get away with the part time playing, the team notices and he loses that respect.
Sounds like bad communication on many levels.
Lovullo should thank his lucky stars he is managing in the desert. He would be drawn and quartered for saying, “I don’t know what’s happening inside of our clubhouse” in a major market. Could you imagine sports talk radio devouring that?
“Tony, from Staten Island, you’re on the FAN.”
You assume that Lovullo is unaware of any issues. It is much more likely he is aware, and hopes to address it internally.
The quote is the problem, not the reality.
Really, just a case of the pot calling the ketel black
Tempest in a tea pot.
Pot calling? More like pot smoking. Amirite?
At least, the guy does show up when he feels like playing? 🤷♂️
Don’t know who’s right or wrong in this, don’t really care. Things like this should be handled internally. Blabbing to the media seems like attention-seeking.
Sounds like he needs some maturity.. taking a day to heal is one thing, staying home is another..
“The Snakes won those two games, incidentally, but it’s understandable that his teammates would get upset about him missing key games with the season on the line.”
This sentence is a mess. It needs to begin with “incidentally” or it has to come after “The Snakes.”
