Dodgers Place Tommy Edman On Injured List

By Anthony Franco | August 4, 2025 at 6:53pm CDT

The Dodgers placed Tommy Edman on the 10-day injured list with a right ankle sprain. As expected, Max Muncy was reinstated from his own IL stint in the corresponding move.

Edman missed a couple weeks in May with ankle inflammation. He aggravated the injury while rounding first base on a single during yesterday’s win over Tampa Bay. Edman was immediately lifted for a pinch-runner, and manager Dave Roberts said postgame that it’d require an injured list stint. The switch-hitting Edman had a monster April, hitting eight home runs in the season’s first month. He hasn’t hit much since then, batting .214/.273/.323 in 210 plate appearances going back to May 1.

The Dodgers will lose one of their most valuable defensive players. Edman plays above-average to plus defense virtually everywhere on the diamond. He has played mostly second base but also taken a decent amount of innings in center field and at third base. The Dodgers also recently lost Hyeseong Kim to an IL stint. That presumably leaves second base to rookie infielder Alex Freeland, though it’s veteran utilityman Miguel Rojas who gets the nod there tonight after Freeland started four consecutive games at the hot corner.

Muncy will step back into an everyday role at third base. He’s back a month after suffering a bone bruise in his left knee. That’s a remarkably quick turnaround. Not only did the injury initially look gruesome, Muncy announced a six-week timetable even after imaging revealed he’d avoided ligament damage. Muncy was on a tear before the injury. After hitting .194 over the season’s first month, he raked at a .282/.410/.546 clip with 12 home runs from the start of May until the injury. He’s hitting fifth tonight against the Cardinals, who are turning to Sonny Gray in the series opener.

The dodgers are the most injury prone team in professional sports…

They take more risks in acquiring injury prone players than other teams because they have the depth to handle the inevitable IL stints

Edman suffered an ankle sprain in 2024 too. I was not able to find reporting on which ankle it was last year, but hopefully this does not become chronic.

Chronic ankles sprains are indicative of muscle or ligament damage. With the amount of medical attention and exposure to physical trainers pro athletes have it is something that would be picked up rather quick. Pro athletes dont have the luxury of being stubborn and avoiding seeing doctors or specialist like many of us men do.

What Id be more leery of as far as chronic injuries would be his surgically repaired wrist. Scar tissue and the complexity as far as bones and tendons in wrist and hand dont leave much room for scar tissue without having some degree of an impact.

I think they should give Ryan Ward a look. This kid has mashed at every level and is hitting .301/.388/.583 this season in AAA with 28 homers. Maybe he doesn’t have a great glove but those numbers are impressive.

I hope this time they keep Edman out until he is completely healed, even if it takes into September. There’s been several games when he hasn’t been available, or forced a poorer defensive alignment because he couldn’t play CF.

OT: Was looking at Shohei’s stats and it appears he has cut way back on his running. Stolen base and Doubles numbers way down from last year, I was surprised by the decrease. Is this on purpose to help him with transitioning back to pitching somehow , or is he nursing a leg issue of some kind? Thanks

Probably to reduce the chance of injury now that he is pitching and lose him at two positions.

While we might never get the two headed maximum Muncy on the dodgers, it appears that one Maximus Muncy is all that’s needed.

2 home runs in the first three innings tonight so far. Dodgers sitting at 5 runs. They day Muncy left the lineup the dodgers runs per game were down 2 full runs. He’s extremely important to the lineup.
