Jonathan Loaisiga Headed For Second Opinion With Likely Flexor Strain

By Anthony Franco | August 20, 2025 at 7:09pm CDT

Jonathan Loáisiga appears to be in for another significant absence. Yankees manager Aaron Boone tells reporters (including Brendan Kuty of The Athletic) that the oft-injured reliever is believed to have suffered a flexor strain. A more specific diagnosis and treatment plan will be known after the righty goes for a second opinion.

Loáisiga was already on the 15-day injured list due to mid-back tightness. That was a relatively minor issue, and the Yanks sent him on a rehab assignment after just two weeks on the shelf. He sustained the more significant forearm injury during an appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre over the weekend. It’s now difficult to imagine Loáisiga pitching again this season. Depending on the results of the second opinion, it’s possible his ’26 season could be impacted.

Arm injuries are unfortunately nothing new for Loáisiga. He lost most of last season to a flexor repair that kept him from making his season debut until May. Loáisiga had previously undergone a full Tommy John surgery while he was in the minor leagues. He’d spent time on the IL with shoulder problems in 2019, 2021 and ’22. A pair of elbow-related IL stints kept him to 17 games in 2023.

Loáisiga has generally been effective when he has been healthy enough to pitch. That hasn’t so much been the case this year. He carries a 4.25 earned run average through 29 2/3 innings. He has only fanned 18.5% of opponents while giving up more than two home runs per nine innings. It might’ve put him on the fringe of the Yankees’ playoff roster had he been healthy, assuming the team gets to the postseason.

The Yankees hold a $5MM option on Loáisiga for next season. His inconsistent performance made it look likelier than they’d decline that even if he were healthy. A season-ending forearm injury would make it a formality that the team cuts him loose at the beginning of the winter.

Inconsistent and constantly injured are his hallmarks…..cut him loose after this season…

instead, they brought him back this year when they didn’t have to, and paid him more money than just about anybody else in the bullpen except another massive waste Williams. Hopefully both will be cut loose this year, but with the Yankees, you never know.

I don’t see any reason to either one of them back. I’ll take Weaver back but he might sign elsewhere for closer money.

Absolutely agree DR…..Cash’s bullpen magic isn’t working this year and the bullpen is going to need a re-make this winter with pieces that are effective and fit together…..
So what was Cash thinking when they over-used Khanle during the WS to the extent that LA knew exactly what he was going to throw 90% of the time with his change, Cash lets him walk, and then signs Williams, whose only pitch is a change to close games this year…….Really?

If they didn’t know Kahnle throws 90% changeups, they haven’t watched him pitch at all. Knowing it’s coming, and hitting it, are vastly different things.

Look at how hard he pitches
It’s no wonder he needs stitches
Surgery is not what he wants to choose
He’s got the Second Opinion Blues

he’s been a massive of waste of money, every year he’s out with an injury. Anyway, it should be no surprise, and this year when he was pitching, he was not particularly effective either. Every time he came in, he gave up runs.

Being a “waste of money” shouldn’t be an issue with the Yankees……Maybe to Hal and Cashman though.

Yeah, a second opinion is definitely in order. The first doctor apparently didn’t buy into the irrational optimism that Loaisiga will be good as new and more effective than ever for the playoffs.

Devin Williams not blowing a save is…incredible. I’ll be honest, already had him blowing the lead once he had runners on second and third.

Acoss – I watched the game, not surprised about the Yanks BP giving up 3 runs in the 8th-9th. They were VERY lucky that 9th inning double didn’t go over the wall.

And no surprise that Crazy Eyes Fairbanks choked again, there’s a reason no team would take him at the deadline. He imploded against the Sox last month too.

This weekend will be the biggest Yanks/Sox series in at least 4 years. Clearly it will come down to the bullpens. if the Sox are leading or tied going into the 8th, it will be game over.

Yanks are hot though, and Stanton is reminding everyone of how great a slugger he is ….. 5 homers and 12 RBI in his last 8 games, wow!

Should be a really fun weekend. BTW – It’s looking like Harrison might be making his Sox debut Sunday night.

It was a bad signing giving his injury issues in the previous seasons. There’s no way they’ll waste 5M on him even without the flexor strain.

Don’t even see a spot for him with Cruz & Yarborough rehabbing, plus Bird & Hamilton at least healthy.

He was a pretty good reliever before TJS. So they paid him a total of $7.5M since then which isn’t outrageous for relievers. That’s similar to what they paid Zach Britton from years ago.
