Tigers Place Matt Vierling On 10-Day IL With Oblique Strain

By Leo Morgenstern | August 10, 2025 at 10:58am CDT

The Tigers announced today that they have placed Matt Vierling on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain. Trey Sweeney was recalled to take his place on the active roster. Manager A.J. Hinch told reporters, including Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, that the strain is “mild.” Yet, with just seven weeks left in the regular season, it’s not out of the question that Vierling could be done for the year. Hinch, however, remains optimistic, saying, “We have not eliminated the chance for him to come back.”

Vierling played a big part in Detroit’s surprising success last year but hasn’t been able to contribute much in 2025. He missed the first two months of the season with a rotator cuff strain in his throwing arm and only made it back for four games in late May before inflammation in the same shoulder shelved him for another month. When healthy, he has struggled to impact the baseball. His hard-hit rate is roughly in line with his career average, and his barrel rate is a career high, but his power numbers have never been worse. He has just three doubles and one home run in 31 games, good for a .307 slugging percentage. His .068 isolated power is the worst on the team (min. 100 PA).

Hinch told reporters yesterday, including Christian Romo of the Detroit Free Press, that Vierling had been nursing “intermittent soreness” in his oblique throughout August. Evidently, the issue eventually proved serious enough for the outfielder to hit the IL.

For now, the Tigers can move Javier Báez back to center field in Vierling’s place. Wenceel Pérez is another option to play the position; he suffered a right foot contusion on Saturday, but tests came back negative. He expects to be available today off the bench (per Evan Woodberry of MLive.com). As for Sweeney, he can cover at shortstop when Báez is playing the outfield. At some point further down the line, however, Detroit will hope to have Parker Meadows back as the everyday center fielder. He has been out with a quad strain since late July. While he doesn’t yet have a timeline to return, Hinch told Chris McCosky of The Detroit News that Meadows is “doing better and better” in his rehab. The skipper said the Tigers are trying to move him along “as fast as [they] can” without causing a setback.

More than a little dissappointed in this site. History happens in MLB and not even a mention of it on here. Not even in your chats.

If you are referring to the female umpire consider that the NHL did it first followed by the NFL and NBA, MLB is, as usual, playing catch-up to what everyone else has already done

Who cares if another league did something first? That doesn’t make it less newsworthy for the sport. Hitting 500 home runs isn’t less meaningful because others did it first.

Not sure that it matters which league did it first. It’s a historic moment in MLB history and like Best, I also think that it’s strange that Tim Dierkes, Steve Adams, and the rest of the crew didn’t have an article mentioning it.

Come on that’s a lazy argument and you know it. A guy retiring isn’t getting traded. A guy signing in Japan isn’t getting traded. A former great manager dying isn’t getting traded. Those are all things this site covers on the regular.

If you want to say you only care about active baseball players and don’t want all that other stuff as well that’s totally fair! It’s a personal preference and nobody can say “you’re wrong,” to you about that.

Never seen an umpire article on this site ever, that has been covered a ton on every major news site. I am positive no one at MLB trade rumors is being malicious here. We need to chill out with the “disappointment” when somebody doesn’t due exactly as we want. Major outlets like FOX and CNN covered her. You ain’t gonna miss it.

Never been a woman umpiring a MLB game, ever. Every other type of historic achievement in MLB that is not a trade rumor has been covered on this website. There have been 7 mentions about umpires on this website in the last 3 years including this one mlbtraderumors.com/2024/05/mlbtr-podcast-angel-her…, just not one about history being made.

Even giving Jung another shot makes more sense, unlees they are sticking Javy in CF for a bit? But even then, play McKinistry at SS and give Jung or Lee 3B at bats.

Does it really matter? Detroit is now playing like the sub-.500 team that they are. Too bad Harris and Ilitch lied (or were incompetent) about getting GOOD help at the deadline.

Or perhaps, they really weren’t nearly as close as you thought. They didn’t and don’t have good enough SP in the 1-2-3 spots. This team really wasn’t a serious contender for the WS.

This. Harris and Hinch knew this team needed way more help to get to the WS than they could acquire. Trading top prospects for 1-2 players who will not be with the team next year…when they really needed at least 1 mid-level starter, 2 swing and miss RP’ers and at least one middle of the order bat…would have set the Tigers back several years. Just making the post season was always this team’s ceiling.

The Tigers are reverting to the mean.

Next year, Skubal’s last as a Tiger, will be the year to go for it.

I agree…but I never was in the “fan base” that saw the Tigers as a top team. At the start of the season, I felt, if they avoided injury to Skubal, could be a .500 ballclub. In March, if you told me that they’d be 20+ games over .500, I wouldn’t have believed you.

I agree with the assessment of the team, but Harris took a dump no matter how you cut it.

Either Harris thinks they are good enough and is incompetent adding the guys he added, thinks they aren’t good enough and is incompetent for not getting anything for expiring contracts, or he feels making the playoffs is the true finish line which is why he made no moves of value.

But they area WS contender. Skubal is the best pitcher in the AL. Mize had a run of bad starts but was an all star. Olson was playing well but went down to injury, altjough he could be back for the playoffs. Look under the hood at Flaherty’s numbers…the walks are all that is hurting him. Paddack and Morton are TBD after only a couple of starts but i like what i have seen so far, esodvially from Morton. Montero and Melton would be starting g for ma y teams. Cobb and Urquidy could chip in too. I disagree on their starters. Skubal, Flaherty, Mize and Morton looks like a pretty solid playoff rotation to me. If they keep fine tuning the bullpen (their achilles heel) they will be even better.

Also, check your notifications. I thumbs up at least one of your comments every month because I typically agree with you, MCBB, we just disagree on this deadline.

You’re right that time will tell, and I’ll happily admit how wrong I was if down the stretch the guys acquired make a positive difference.

Not giving Lee a shot at this juncture is concerning. He’s the heir apparent at 2B and has been playing a lot at 3B lately.
Waiting for Anderson’s move to Toledo as well. Max has been the Moon Mammoths’ most consistent hitter.

I don’t have much hope for Tigers this playoff season. Anemic offense and unreliable pitching.

What a strange season. It’s completely opposite of last year. No power/power. No starters/too many. Bullpen was biggest strength/biggest weakness. Terrible 1st half/best 2nd/best first half/terrible second. We have no major injuries. Stinking Cle without Clase is better and coming for our heads. At this point, I dunno. I think the team has mistakingly already thought this division was a wrap and still do. We will fall from first. Only question is can we rebound or are we nothing more than a wild card team.

Philly; LAD are the classic type of teams that MUST go all in. Tigers aren’t in that category yet. Impatient fans want to trade away future stars for a piss poor chance of a WS. Realistically, the timeline has always been ‘26-27 to start getting serious. Fans are delusional.

You are correct, the next wave of prospects will make the Tigers real contenders. The only hiccup will be starting pitching, Skubal probably traded this offseason, Jobe not back until 27.

There’s no way after seeing these guys get traded for nothing that we couldn’t have done better. We weren’t going for top anyway, so they weren’t asking for our top guys. But Anderson? Liranzo? We said no to them too. Why?? Only 1 or 2 of these 8 or 9 minors guys are gonna be MLB guys. And they might not be superstars. The future of contention was right in front of them and they chose the uncertain future of 2 or 3 years from now when we start from scratch. I just don’t get it. But I agree- trade Skubal after this year BUT it’s got to be headlines with MLB now talent.

If we win with what we already have, cool.
But we can’t invest beyond what we spent in off season. No matter if that means increasing our division lead.
    Were looking to the future.
    And then what?
Let’s pretend Clark, McG, Brisceno, Melton all become superstars. Are you going to spend then Illitch? Your not doing it now with Tarik, Mize, Tork and Greene. So what gives?

Nobody will ever convince me that Scott vision makes any sense.

Tigers are averaging 29k fans compared to last year’s 23k. They’ll spend with a sustainable winning roster if they win the division and get far in the postseason. Skubal is a Boras client so the chances of him signing an extension are pretty slim.

Do you know who our owner is?
He said he’d add when homegrown guys excel.
So Tork, Greene, Skubal wasn’t what he meant? Did he mean half the team have to be good first?
When Clark and co are ready Skub will be gone. Even then who’s to say these guys aren’t just hype?
Skubs has to go regardless. Too much for too many years. I say trade him after this season and get a kings ransom- headlined by MLB now talent.

They had a insane huge lead, and now if they can get back to .500 ball from the start of July they’ll be more than okay. Being in first is good ! GO TIGERS !!!!

The month of August will tell the Tigers tale. The learning this team has went through has been huge. They are exciting the fan base this year. The start was insane. They are growing every day. I like Baez back in center field, that was the formula when they were winning up a storm. The Tigers have a good team and a nice farm system. GO TIGERS !!!

Should have continued with building the team by trading the upcoming free agents and option guys for prospects. Shoulda’ cashed ’em in…shoulda’ hired the Superfife, coulda’ had a V-8!

Now there’ll be a new round of guys to be cashed in. The Tigers can make competitive offers…..even after the fact.
Of course, I think the Tigers can win either way!
    Get well Vierling!
