Twins Have Expressed Interest In Ryan Pressly

By Anthony Franco | August 4, 2025 at 11:57pm CDT

The Cubs released veteran reliever Ryan Pressly over the weekend. Chicago had designated the two-time All-Star for assignment on deadline day after acquiring Taylor Rogers. The 36-year-old is now free to explore other opportunities, which could include a return to either of his previous teams.

Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports that the Twins have reached out to Pressly’s camp to express interest. Meanwhile, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote on Sunday that the Astros were thinking about trying to re-sign the righty. It’s unclear if the Astros have spoken with Pressly or were simply weighing the idea internally. In either case, there’s no guarantee the 13-year big leaguer continues pitching. Hayes writes that Pressly is considering his options, including retirement.

The decision wouldn’t be about money, at least not for the remainder of this season. Pressly is guaranteed his $14MM salary whether or not he signs elsewhere. The Astros are covering $5.5MM as part of the offseason trade that sent him to Chicago. The Cubs are on the hook for the other $8.5MM. If Pressly were to sign, his new team would pay the prorated portion of the $760K league minimum for his time in the majors — which would come off the Cubs’ books. There could be a long-term financial consideration in the sense that playing the final two months could elevate his stock before a return trip to free agency in the offseason. That’d only be relevant if he continues his career in 2026.

Before this season, Pressly had divided his MLB career between Minnesota and Houston. He pitched with the Twins between 2013-18, moving to Houston at the ’18 deadline. Pressly had been a productive reliever in the Twin Cities, but his career really took off with the Astros. He made both All-Star appearances and got his first closing opportunity in Houston. He made the postseason all seven years with the Astros, winning a ring in 2022. Pressly recorded 14 saves with a 2.78 ERA in 47 career playoff appearances.

If he were to return to one of his former clubs, one would imagine the Astros are the more desirable landing spot. They’re three games up in the AL West race and have a good shot to make the playoffs. Minnesota is eight games below .500 and decimated the bullpen at the deadline. They’re playing out the string and looking for relievers who can backfill the innings they traded away. Pressly is also a Texas native whose wife is from the Houston area — which was a consideration for the reliever in deciding whether to waive his no-trade clause to leave the Astros in the first place.

That said, a return to the Astros would presumably require pitching in lower-leverage spots. Pressly reportedly wasn’t thrilled with the Astros bumping him from the ninth inning to sign Josh Hader during the 2023-24 offseason. He didn’t force his way out of Houston — that was a team decision motivated by a desire to cut payroll — but GM Dana Brown acknowledged in January that the relationship between him and Pressly changed after the Hader signing. The Twins, who now have a bullpen comprising almost entirely journeymen and depth pickups, could promise him late-inning work. It’s also possible Pressly has fielded calls from other teams that haven’t been reported.

Pressly’s stint with the Cubs was a disappointment. He turned in a 4.35 ERA with a career-low 15% strikeout rate. He lost his hold on the closer role by the middle of April. Pressly remained an effective reliever as recently as last year, pitching to a 3.49 ERA over 56 2/3 frames with Houston.

This pitcher was really good like 3-4 years ago. He could still get guys out. He should just go to a contender.

He would go back if he’s given the closer role to salvage his value and hope for a good offer during the offseason.

If the ishbia’s do buy the twins, they’re going to want to spend, the question is if they’re going to put in a good front office or bad one

Right now the ishbias have a horrible track record with the phoenix suns so they might become the next arte Moreno

That’s what Angel fans such as myself have been waiting for in the last decade now.

It would be a miracle for my Angels to make the playoffs, let alone the Twins, who are 8 games below .500 and just had a huge fire sale.

A 4.35 ERA and he gets released? That would be the best reliever on the Rockies by a long shot. I guess relievers are also in the eye of the beholder, much like beauty.

The Rockies actually have good relievers even after the deadline like vodnik and halvorsen

They’re ERA’s are high this season but they’re inexperienced and they have the stuff to be above average

I have watched them pitch every game of their career. They are “sexy” relievers because they can throw the ball really hard, but I would not classify either one as a “good” reliever yet. Vodnik especially is much better in “non-clutch” situations. But if you put Vodnik into a tie fame, there is a good chance it won;t be a tie game much longer. Halvofsen is a little more polished, but he also has a tendency to blow up a little more often than you want to see from a major league reliever.

It’s 2025 Brett. Teams still win games by scoring more runs than the opponent and giving up fewer runs than the opponent. It is the exact same way they won games in 1905, 1935, 1965, and 1995. The game has not changed that much. The only thing that has changed is all the white noise that make people think they can predict the future.

If they were on a playoff team then their run prevention would matter

But we are talking about the Rockies, zero meaningful baseball so it’s ok to look at the peripherals

        • hiflew

It’s OK to look at peripherals for anyone, but it is important to remember what really matters in the end. Wins and losses are determined by runs scored and nothing else. If a pitcher goes 9 innings and strikes out 16 batters, but gives up two runs, well that team could still lose. If a pitcher goes 7 innings and gives up 10 hits and 4 walks, but zero runs then his team is in a better position to win the game than the “better” performance.

@hiflew Right, they don’t matter. Your record is your record. But I think it’s a good tool to look at to see which teams might be playing with a lot of good fortune and so may be due for regression in the future. Also showing the teams that might be underperforming due to bad luck or otherwise not maximizing their talents and so could be due for regression in the positive way going forward.

The Jays gave played an even number of games so I’m not sure how that Pythagorean record works. MLB has their xW-L at 60-54. Texas, too. 65-49. Maybe it wasn’t updated from yesterday’s games yet.

Oppo I look at it as what a team’s record “should be” based on their quality of play. The Yankees should have a better record but their lack of fundamentals and poor coaching have brought it down. It also helps you to see what teams might be playing over their skis and getting away with good calls and good luck. In this case the Blue Jays could definitely be seen that way.

Lopez and Buxton are the only guaranteed contracts. The rest are arb or pre-arb players, so pretty much a rebuild.

The rotation is still solid, but If they don’t get new owners prior to the offseason, Lopez and/or Ryan are probably gone. Could still be gone even with new owners, but hopefully not.

If you take away that one outing where the so-called smartest manager in baseball (Counsell) left Pressly out there to absorb nine runs his numbers would be as good or better than a lot of pitchers.

I thought all along after he was released some team who traded away a closer would sign him for the minimum. No downside risk, and who knows, a team might catch lightening in a bottle. Thought Minny, the Pirates and maybe the St. Louis would be possibilities.

Pressly should sign anywhere he can to show the other 29 teams he’s healthy and has something left in the tank.

A contender like the Phillies needs to be interested in Pressly. The Phils need a bridge to Duran. Strahm is hit or miss. Kirkering in on some days and off the next. The team needs more consistent options and Pressly is a low risk pick up. If they were willing to sign Robertson, sign Pressly.
