As Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey conducts his first managerial search, John Shea of the San Francisco Standard reports that he’s spoken to an intriguing name: former Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. Shea does not clarify whether or not the conversation was part of Posey’s search for a new manager or even if either side has clear interest in Hyde taking over for Bob Melvin in San Francisco, but the conversation between the two is noteworthy nonetheless.
After all, Hyde would make plenty of sense as a manager for the Giants. Like Melvin before him, Hyde is a Bay Area native who has had success managing a small market team in the past. Ignoring a one-game stint as manager of the Marlins back in 2011, Hyde’s time in the manager’s chair has been spent entirely in Baltimore. He managed the club from 2019 until he was fired back in May, and in doing so led the club through a lengthy rebuild, exceeded all expectations with a surprisingly competitive 2022 season, and then build on that success to deliver a 101-win campaign to Baltimore in 2023 en route to an AL Manager of the Year award.
Hyde’s 421-492 record with the Orioles leaves much to be desired, though it must be viewed through the lens of a club that had no intentions of competing during the first three seasons he spent in the organization. The early-season disaster the Orioles suffered under Hyde this year is an undeniable blemish that can’t be excused as the trials of managing a rebuilding club, but he’s nonetheless well-respected around the game. Former Rockies manager Bud Black told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale last month that he believes Hyde will be managing again “soon,” and for his part Hyde indicated to Nightengale that he does hope to return to the dugout as soon as next season. Perhaps that opportunity could come with the Giants, his hometown team.
Of course, while there’s a plausible fit between Hyde and the Giants that doesn’t mean that he’ll be hired or even necessarily interview for the position. Shea notes that Rangers special assistant (and former Giants catcher) Nick Hundley is “fast becoming the popular choice” to replace Melvin and highlights his strong relationship with Posey, who he served as the backup for during his time as a player in San Francisco. Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic takes things a step forward and reports that Hundley is “considered the favorite” for the job in San Francisco, before adding that he’s not believed to be considering any managerial opportunities besides the Giants’ vacancy.
Hundley has been a known candidate for the job for some time now, and has already interviewed for the role, but the fact that he’s considered the favorite is new information. Former All-Star catcher Kurt Suzuki and Guardians associate manager Craig Albernaz are both known to be candidates for the role in San Francisco as well.

Should be The Thrill
Pujols!
Love Will and hope he continues to remain a part of the team in his current capacity, but I can’t imagine a worse candidate for this era of managing.
Be cool to see *somebody* shake the peach tree every now and then, Kap! Love Thrill, but he does have some rough edges. Shoot, you know he’d be carrying the torch of Humm Baby at the end, though. He’d always have a player’s back, but it ain’t happening, as you suggest.
Buster Posey seeks a potion to separate Nick Hundley’s good and evil personas with the latter serving as a bench coach named Brandon Hyde.
MadBum would bring some excitement to the game as manager, at least during the innings before he’s tossed.
Ok, so while we’re talking about recent retirees, how bout The Captain? Let the Belt Wars resume!
Never going to happen. I’m sure MadBum is very happy being retired and away from the game. It’s funny to imagine how many ejections he’d have because of umpire arguments though.
That would be Awesome
Awesomely stupid.
Oh it’s thee Loser who Lives on this message board espousing his misanthropic spewdem ,the same guy who argued with me about the viability of the Giants feeble farm system.Youre in desperate need of Louisville Slugger to the Cranium therapy.
Jean Matrac 🖕🤡
Yeah, whatever.
I thought frugalfarhan made another dumb bragging comment. But it was you 9er78. Hope that comment about the cranium wasn’t a threat. I think you can join frugalfarhan in being An assistant GM for the local Little League team. You’re both smart enough to pull it off.
I’m insulted
Nah, Hyde is a great choice because he is a Bay Area native, and has lots of experience wearing black and orange.
Hometown roots don’t win ballgames. The Giants need someone who can manage and get hitters producing — not another feel-good story for the marketing department
Bochy.
How more years does anyone think he has left managing. Bochy should only be considered for a world series or bust team. Mets or Phillies for one or two years max. Padres or Astros if they decide to move on from their current skipper. Giants aren’t close to winning anything in my opinion.
Posey very recently said of Bochy as Manager – not happening.
I think Bochy hangs em up for good. Might as well get the HOF 5 year clock started early so he can enjoy being enshrined for awhile. Well deserved.
Bochy?
AL B DAMNED: Is there an echo up in here or are you also JayRyder?
No Scott Servais ??
The thrill would be a great guy on the staff maybe a thirdbase coach then Hundley as manager and Suzuki as bench coach. Boy they would bring some toughness to the team.
I don’t get the love for “The Thrill!” If he loved the Giants so much then why did he bolt in Free Agency? I mean, what’s a few million? Screw him! He’s a phony!
Learn the story of that before making an absurd comment like that. He did every thing he could to stay. They were cutting salary and didn’t want him back.
Obviously didn’t do “everything he could to stay’ because he didn’t! hard to imagine they couldn’t have worked something out! He chose money and Texas and now he’s a “Forever Giant?” Not for this fan since 58 he’s not and never will be!
The Giants chose to pay Robby Thompson instead of Will Clark. Big mistake.
Careful there. Will Clark is going to find you and show you what a phony he is!
Hundley has the job if he wants it. Backup catchers have an advantage over everyone else that cannot be denied. I really hope he accepts the offer. Then I would like to see them trade Ramos for Gray and Eldridge for Alcantara. Sign Helsley and Polanco and let Matos, Luciano, Encarnacion, Gilbert, Lee, Koss, and McCray fight for time in the OF. Dom Smith can even get in the mix a little if needed but they have to shore up the pitching and Polanco would be a nice switch hitter to mix into the top 6 lineup spots.
I thought you was being serious….until I saw your username.
Alcantara will cost a hell of a lot less than the best 1B prospect in baseball.
Let’s see if I’m right. I’ve been right about a bunch of other stuff this year like them needing to fire Melvin and move on from Wade, Yaz, and Flores. I was right about Lee swinging a wet newspaper and right about Adames being a solid move. Let’s see if I’m right about the following that haven’t happened yet:
1. Hundley gets the job if he accepts (he turned them down 2 years ago) but if not then it will be an ex MLB backup catcher
2. They will trade Eldridge for starting pitching hopefully Alcantara but maybe Cabrera is thrown in there as well and if they don’t sign Polanco or another 2B maybe Xavier Edwards.
3. Ramos gets traded. He is an amazing hitter with excrement for brains. If they can swing a starter for him it makes all the sense in the world with all the other options we have for LF.
Nobody here likes to actually be held accountable for their takes but I have no problem with it. I haven’t heard anything for a while from the Lee/Wade/Yaz/Flores defenders. You guys ever post about how wrong you were about those bumbs? I will be happy admit I was wrong if none of the above happens but if any of it does then I will keep posting the truth no matter how scary it is for some of you
Other than you, noone cares if you’re right.
Same goes to you my friend still waiting for you to be right about something though. How you feeling about your boy Lee these days? Wanna resign Flores after that complete collapse over the last 4 months? You loved Wade too I didn’t want to rub it in during the season but thank god Posey has listened to me and cut the cord on all the guys you loved. If you aren’t right about anything then everything you say is meaningless. Stand behind your words floppert
Ha ha. I love most of them.
You just love yourself. I’m good with being wrong. It’s not a thing for me.
If you think Posey listened to you, you’re as nuts as your childish posts. A Little League team might be interested in you to run their team. It’s a massively tough job but you might be good at it. I can’t stand people who are so full of themselves either. Good luck with your Little League.
Arguing with strangers on the internet and you have the nerve to call me nuts and childish?!? I have bad news for you sport, as soon as you post you are no better nor worse than everyone else ok here. So whatever you think I am is exactly what you are you just don’t like looking in the mirror.
There’s a couple of nuances in that posting theory. What you post and how you post it is a fairly significant consideration you seem to be overlooking.
But whenever a team is looking for a new manager, the fan favorite seems to always be a former player of the team. Its always based on what they did as a player. Mostly because they often have no managerial experience. Any other profession, experience would matter. Let the rebuilding clubs be the “entry level” openings. While the SFG are not the favorites, they are definitely not rebuilding. They need an experienced manager. Devers is not going to respect some rookie, even if they are a former teamate of Posey. That would mean nothing to him.
stymeedone, You had me agreeing with you in regard to guys like Will Clark, Bumgarner, and Belt as manager. That is until you got to limiting rebuilding clubs to first-time managers. And it got worse with Devers not being able to respect a guy like Hundley.
Were the Guardians a rebuilding club? Did Jose Ramirez not respect Stephen Vogt? Vogt was manager of the year his rookie season, and got them to two straight PS appearances.
Hundley is 14 years older than Devers, played 12 years in the MLs, and actually hit pretty well for a catcher. I think you’re completely off base assuming Devers couldn’t have respect for Hundley. And you seem unaware of how much the role of the manager has changed in today’s game.
Thanks Jean. Devers will respect whatever manager Posey hires. Devers played in 163 games this year and will respect whoever controls playing time. If Wilmer decides to hang it up, which probably won’t happen, but he would be a great bench coach for the Giants. He’s very well respected througout baseball. I have confidence in whoever Posey hires as manager. Hundley was a great guy when he played for us.
Ramirez is not the “me first” player Devers is. Go ahead and hire a rookie manager as long you realize that you may have a Boston situation repeat, with Devers becoming a malcontent, again. He sure didn’t respect Cora, because they didn’t agree.
Devers did nothing with the Giants to appear to be a me-first guy. In fact, it was just the opposite. You’re making huge assumptions based on a mere opinion about what happened in Boston, and who was to blame.
If, and that’s a big if, he didn’t respect Cora, you still have no first-hand knowledge that it was because they didn’t agree. Your post simply assumes you know what happened in Boston, and you don’t.
Just like every post here, its my opinion. You are allowed to have one, also. We don’t have to agree. I will consider what you say, knowing you don’t know for sure, either, and watch to see how things unfold going forward.
No one is questioning anyone’s right to their opinion. But when that opinion is presented as fact, without first-hand knowledge, you have to expect pushback.
I could be wrong. So I agree that we’ll see how things unfold.
trade for dave robots
Derek Shelton
Get rid of Devers
And who would take him. Stone glove and rotten attitude.
Letitbe: Devers had 2 errors in 223 chances at 1st base and .992 fp. Far from a stone glove. This was done while learning a new positiom. Also saved potential errors by other infielders on throws in the dirt and offline. He will be just fine at 1B.
I can only surmise that this comment is coming from a Red Sox Devers hater. The way I see it, the Red Sox totally screwed Devers over! Signed to a Multi Year extension to be the every day 3rd Baseman and didn’t he actually win a Gold Glove at that position? Then they sign a Free Agent to take his place and tell him “OK, you’re now the DH!” Who wouldn’t be pissed and uncooperative about not playing First Base.! The Giants are lucky to have him and from my perspective, it’s a HUGE loss for the Sox!
I really like Devers after watching him fit in really well after the trade. He seems to really enjoy being here. And it’s great to see a Giants player who can absolutely crush the ball to all fields. Giants have a really good core. Even though I was rough on Verlander earlier this season, I wouldn’t mind seeing him re-signed. I’m very optimistic for 2026.
Isn’t it just. Watching him hit really makes me appreciate what we have been missing.
Some Red Sox fans need to get over it. The negativity was understandable, during the toxicity between Devers and the team, and up to a little after he was traded.
But, over time now, seeing how he fit in, and produced for the Giants, seems like any negativity now is just an expression of how butt hurt some Sox fans still are. I wouldn’t want to expose my hurt feelings so publicly. It would probably be better for those fans to just accept what happened and let it go.
Devers was arguably the worst defensive 3B in the game. Gold Gloves mean exactly nothing.
No player is signed to a position in their contract. They are signed only to be paid,. The team determines where they will play. Devers came into spring training injured to the point that he could not hit, let alone play in the field. He didn’t take live at bats until mid-March and there was no way he could play 3B. He was not physically able. Devers was in the wrong. 100%. The Red sox did nothing wrong.
You have to be entirely self centered and really stupid to even try to say you want to play 3B when you know that physically you can’t do it.
The Giants season imploded after trading for Devers. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.
The Red Sox season took off and they ended up in the playoffs after trading Devers away. I don’t think that is a coincidence either.
You, and many many others, think you know without watching, Pads Fan. It’s those massive egos you have.
If you watched the Giants day in day out, you know his attitude wasn’t a problem. In fact, you could even think he improved the culture. Big smiles, much frivolity, every day. That’s what you saw when you watched.
It’s hilarious that narcissist types like yourself, think you know the Giants dugout vibe, without actually having to watch the Giants dugout vibe. Just going “oh, the giants crashed ….. must have been Devers. Oh the Red Sox went well, must have been getting rid of Devers”. Didn’t watch a second of a Giants game but I’m so awesome I don’t need to do that. Just ridiculous.
outinleftfield, Since no one, outside the principals involved, know exactly what transpired between the Sox and Devers, it’s completely absurd to declare anyone 100% to blame.
With Devers willingly to play 1B for the Giants, having never played a single professional game at the position, and basically doing whatever was asked, ought to tell you something about him wanting to do what is good for the team.
I agree, he was not a good defender at 3B, but that’s irrelevant. It doesn’t automatically make him 100% responsible for the souring of the relationship. I don’t know what happened, but it’s not unreasonable to suspect the Sox didn’t give him the minimum consideration of talking to him, and letting him know what the plans were for him. He’s an elite hitter and deserved that.
Maybe you haven’t had a bad boss in your life, but just telling someone, it’s my way or the highway is the MO of many bad bosses. It doesn’t create a good working environment or encourage people to work as a team. To the contrary it creates resentment and a toxic environment. A boss like that is the one responsible for what happens.
Critics of Devers are simply ignoring the player he was after he was traded. The Giants’ organization, and fans are more than happy with him on the team. Point fingers all you want, the Giants’ and their fans are happy and don’t care about someone trying to throw shade.
I think Cora is escaping scrutiny in this divorce. Always hear Red Sox FO and Devers being to blame. Cora probably was more to blame than anyone. He is the person responsible for communicating with his players and even more so with his best player and bona fide star. I think Devers didn’t get the respect he deserved from Cora. Cora has laid low as he’s done before through the divorce. I wouldn’t trust what he says at all. Shifty/sleazy I think. Just my opinion. If Red Sox fans are angry Devers is gone I don’t blame them but they’re misplacing blame. Devers was traded away by your FO/Manager. It’s been months and both teams benefited. It really is time to get over it. Good luck in 2026 Red Sox fans and team, except the series the Giants play you.
Good point, which is entirely possible. But like every other aspect/theory that’s something we can’t know for sure. No matter what happened between the Sox and Devers, the only real evidence we have is what we can see. And that’s the Devers of the Giants doesn’t appear to be the Devers some Sox fans want to paint him to be.
Whatever it was, dude wasn’t happy. Probably an amalgamation of lot of things. Some big, some small, some appearing larger than they are. Anyhow , happy Raffy appears to be a different beast to unhappy Raffy. Long may it continue.
I’m glad piece reigned in quoting his Orioles record. The first 3 years don’t count. Great turnaround – just couldn’t close the deal.
The GM couldn’t close the deal. He put all his pitching eggs in one basket and after that egg flew away to Arizona, that pitching staff was left really barren.
Put an A I as a manager
Oakland Ballers (2025 Pioneer League champions) literally did that for a game as a goof, with manager overrride allowed.
He changed one decision.
421-492- its actually extremely impressive the record is that even with the first few years being 100 loss years with AAA rosters and the poor beginning to 2025. Overall a good manager and I hope he gets another shot.
Suzuki and his hat will not be allowed to manage in SF
Hyde was collateral damage for Baltimore’s under performance. He’d probably be successful with SF.
Forget Nick Hundley. What about Todd Hundley?
What they did not interview Johnny LeMaster yet, c’mon who does not want the Boo! back in uniform.
If the Giants want one of their former backup catchers as manager, I suggest the guy with a proven track record of getting mediocre squads into the postseason: Stephen Vogt. Even as a lifelong A’s fan and Giants hater I’d have trouble rooting against them with Vogt at the helm because: I believe in yadda yadda..
His name comes up a lot. A good fit. But he’s already got a job and a contract.
No way would the Guards give permission for Vogt to interview with any other team.
Conventional wisdom says don’t work with your bestie. Buster throwing away the conventional wisdom book if Hundley accepts. It’s a bit scary. Awkward stuff if it goes belly up.,
I don’t know why I keep hearing this. So what if they’re friends? It seems to me that may result in a better working relationship! Posey and Melvin were friends and that didn’t stop Posey from giving him the boot! What? Is he supposed to hire someone he only remotely knows and roll the dice? Ridiculous!
Better off without man love clouding your vision. It also makes it awkward if there is disagreement and tough decisions hqve to be made.
Many a fine friendship have been ruined by working with them. Hence the conventional wisdom.
Manlove like you had for Farhan?
I have to disagree. I don’t think Posey would have any hesitancy moving on professionally from a guy he was friendly with. I’m sure he has the ability to compartmentalize work and friends.
My theory about Hundley is that Posey saw something when they were teammates, and had the pitcher/catcher pregame meetings to go over how to work the hitters. I assume Hundley must have impressed Posey, or he wouldn’t even be considered.
But whether it’s Hundley, Hyde, or someone else, I’ll trust Posey to make a good pick.
I’m not against it. You got to hope they are both big enough and ugly enough to make it work. Still, hiring your bestie is a courageous move. People will be watching pretty closely. Let’s see if he wins out first.
Posey would be the only one to be concerned with. And, if he fires a friend, who cares if the friend takes it hard? Like I said above, I have no doubt that, if the situation called for him to fire a friend, Posey would not hesitate. I have faith that he’ll do what’s best for the team in both the hiring, and if necessary, the firing, whether it’s a friend or not.
Death, Taxes & fired managers.
“Hyde would make plenty of sense…who has had success managing a small market team…”
Why does that aspect make sense? SF is not a small market.
While I didn’t always agree with the way Hyde managed certain aspects of the club while he was in Baltimore, this past year he was essentially set up to fail. No reliable replacement for the run production that Santander brought (even if hes been obliterated by injuries as well) and no top of rotation arm replacement for Burnes (also injured). I don’t think anyone was expecting the team to be better than it was last year after such an offseason. Hyde did do a solid job of getting the team competitive far before most would have expected.
As someone else said, he ended up being the patsy here this year but I imagine he lands on his feet somewhere, if we all can see what he had (or didn’t have) on the roster this year then no doubt other organizations see it too.
Manager – Hundley
Bench coach – Hyde
Pitching Coach – Black
With a first time manager they are going to need some experience on his bench.
Even with some ties to the Giants, I don’t ever see Black taking a coaching job. He’s probably taking a managerial job or retiring.
