The Dodgers don’t yet know whether they’ll be heading to Milwaukee to face the Brewers or welcoming the Cubs into Dodger Stadium for Monday’s series opener of the NLCS, but that’s not stopping them from making plans for the series. In particular, manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including MLB.com’s Sonja Chen) this afternoon that he expects the club to carry at least one more pitcher on their roster for the upcoming series after carrying 11 (plus Shohei Ohtani) in the NLDS against the Phillies.
That will consequently mean shortening up a bench that was six players deep during this past series. Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register suggests that utility man Hyeseong Kim and outfielder Justin Dean are the most likely candidates to be left off the NLCS roster. Kim, 26, has a wRC+ of 95 in 71 regular seasons games this year in his rookie campaign after signing with the Dodgers out of South Korea during the offseason. He’s primarily played second base this year but has also made cameos at shortstop and in center field. Dean, meanwhile, has just two plate appearances in the majors this year as he’s been used almost exclusively as a pinch runner by Los Angeles. He does have a stolen base this postseason, however, while Kim has made just appearance so far across L.A.’s two series.
Alex Call, Ben Rortvedt, and Miguel Rojas have all drawn starts in the playoffs already and seem likely to once again be parts of the bench mix headed into the NLCS. Dalton Rushing has seen virtually no playing time so far, but might be needed insurance for the Dodgers at the catcher position given that Will Smith is playing through a hairline fracture in his throwing hand. Keeping Rushing on the roster would mean that the Dodgers will have two catchers available even if Smith needs a game or two off at some point to manage the injury. Without a three-catcher setup, a day or two off for Smith would likely necessitate a placement on the injured list, which would then make him unavailable for the World Series if the Dodgers were to advance.
One player that definitely won’t be removed from the roster, it seems, is utility man Enrique Hernandez. Hernandez has served as the club’s starting left fielder this postseason and, while he’s known to have been nursing a day-to-day back injury since the Wild Card series against Cincinnati, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic relays that Hernandez is doing fine in spite of that injury and that the days off between the end of the NLDS and the start of the NLCS should help him get healthy. Hernandez has long been excellent in the postseason and that hasn’t changed this year, with a .318/.400/.409 slash line (132 wRC+) across 25 plate appearances.
Turning back to the rotation, Roberts indicated to reporters (including Chen) that despite both Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto needing extra rest built in between their starts, he does not anticipate the Dodgers needing more than four starters for their upcoming seven game set. That quartet figures to be the aforementioned duo of Ohtani and Yamamoto, plus Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow. Clayton Kershaw and Emmet Sheehan have both been available to provide length out of the bullpen so far, and headed into the NLCS it’s possible someone like Ben Casparius or Andrew Heaney is added to the playoff roster to give the team another long relief option.

Casparius replacing Dean?
The Cubs had a solid season, but the Dodgers are heading to Milwaukee.
Should have started Shota. He would have shutout the Brewers.🤣
I hope home field advantage is enough for the Brewers.Better to win some road games too.
Ugh was it just me , or did it seem the Cubs were lacking a bit of spark or extra energy/ooomph tonight ? Everything looked sort of perfunctory like they were just trying to get thru it. Maybe it’s just the energy of playing at Wrigley that helps so much. It’s a stark difference. And they won’t be getting any positive vibes emanating from Counsell, he’s like a human popsicle standing there. Or Kyle Tucker; playoff anti-hero anti-climax choke artist.
So many years it seemed like Milwaukee could not win in the playoffs, but now that Counsell is no longer managing them, they win a series. Maybe Counsell was the problem?
Counsell left his magnetic personality and inspirational cloak of charismatic leadership at the Korean Dry Cleaners in Kenosha or something.
Kyle was the would-be tying run at the plate in the 8th inning. So maybe after the Friars, the Cubs’ batters (except for Busch and Hoerner) were “tuckered-out”? Still, a solid season for having no Steele or Horton in the playoffs.
Lumpy
By that logic (Counsell being the problem), why did the Brewers blow a wild card series last season?
I don’t think the manager has as much to do with postseason success as you think it does. The Brewers were the number one seed, so they very well should have won that series. And Counsell’s team (Chicago) almost upset them, so I don’t see how he’s the issue
I wish they would talk to Pages about his selfish at bats. He would rather strikeout on ball 4 than take a walk.
An easy out 9th hitter that can defend on that All Star team is fine. As overachieving as Milw is/has been, Dodgers probably win in 5 max.
Dodgers were 0-6 against Milwaukee in the regular season. Don’t get ahead of yourself just yet.
While I hope that holds up for Milwaukee, that 6-0 is regular season. Now it’s 0-0.
Must have been in their 40-10 stretch.
Mets were 0-6 against the Cubs in 2015. They swept the Cubs in the NLCS. Then again it was the Cubs.
Yup, facts matter.
This is a very different Dodgers team now
No Snell, no Sho
A team’s record against another team in the regular season doesn’t mean anything. The Phillies were 4-2 against the Dodgers in the regular season, and now they are eliminated.
Speaking of not getting ahead of yourself…..The Dodgers played their worst of the season throughout July, which is when the Brewers faced them. This Dodger team is not like that July team, which was banged up badly and not executing well.
Besides, regular season recorda mean little in the postseason. The Dodgers were 1-10 vs the Mets in 1988 and came back to beat them in their World Series drive that year.
Pages is an easy out? True, he is slumping right now. But look at his overall numbers from the season. And he himself was worthy of All-Star consideration. He was not their 9th hitter during the season.
@Diggly….Do you actually think the hitting coaches have not worked with Pages on his plate discipline/pitch recognition?
Pages has mostly struggled since about July. Wishing someone to “talk with him about selfish at bats” seems like an unserious comment.
I don’t care if you consider it an unserious comment.
Then why did you reply?
Because I wanted him to know that his opinion means nothing to me.
It meant enough to reply to it.
@Diggly…Okay, carry on with naïve tone of your comment. Characterizing. Andy’s at bats as selfish makes it seem that you have some maturing to do.
Lol… it means nothing, Freud.
Why do you keep investing your time in “nothing?”
Constantly swinging at pitches outside the zone instead of taking a walk is what a selfish at bat is.
Or, here’s a crazy thought, maybe he doesn’t have the best strike zone judgement.
Nah, it’s much more likely he KNOWS a pitch is a ball, and chooses to swing anyway.
Pages’ has been doing that most of 2nd half of the regular season and career. His BB% is subpar. To “wish” someone would talk to him about it is kind of silly. Doc (and the LAD org. under Friedman) is known for the excellent communication skills.
That was the concern about Pages since his time as a prospect; He has excellent power and good speed but poor plate discipline. I haven’t dug into the numbers but Pages’ first half was likely more BABIP driven.
But Diggler wishes someone should “talk” with him. That is funny yet not surprising. There are quite a few of my fellow LAD fans are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. You see more of the casual/uninformed fans in the larger markets.
The indignation that you display over me saying someone should talk to Pages is amusing.
The biggest problem for Pages is he wasn’t allowed continue using his pencil bats. I bet he’d be turn into a monster with them.
Semi kidding.
@diggler , not indignant, just annoyed with your naive ignorance.
Are you dating Pages or something? I seem to have struck a nerve.
There are plenty of uninformed people in every fan base. I have been around long enough to witness that.
Probably because there is a larger fan base in those markets, by statistical probability you might find what seem to be more casual fans.
Ouch, have you been saving that one up since middle school?
Actually, during players weekend Pages had bats painted like giant No.2 pencils. And he started raking with them. Even the local announcers were wishing he could keep using them.
So it was a joke based on something that really happened lol. The bats looked great btw. You should Google them.
Are you dating Paddyo or something?
You seem to be keen on everyone’s dating habits. Lonely?
Nope
Striking out on ball 4 is not selfish. It’s bad hitting.
I hope they don’t use Conforto as a platoon in left. His bat stinks
If the Dodgers are adding a pitcher, they are not going to include Conforto IMHO.
What if they put Conforto in the bullpen?
Better than Scott.
There isn’t a spot for Conforto most likely.
He just didn’t have it this season.
Easy to fix
Dodgers will travel to Milwaukee, as the Brewers beat the Cubs today. Hopefully the Brewers will defeat LA and play the Mariners in the World Series. But as a Braves fan, I would be happy with any of the remaining teams, except for the Dodgers, to win this year.
Oddsmakers pick the Dodgers by a wide margin once they vanquished the Phillies. Even without the bye, Dodgers pitchers are more rested. But this is baseball, so anything can happen.
Hopefully Roberts will leave trienan on the roster.
Crazy that brewers have a better record and are hosting the were expected to win 120 games dodgers.
Not really. Dodgers are a talented team but they didn’t seem anywhere near good enough to win over 100 games.
It’s hard to get motivated when you can another pencil in winning the NL West every year. Every year they bring in new blood to help with that motivation.
And Conforto, Scott, and Yates didn’t bring the energy, the game, or the results to motivate the team. You’ll notice they provided the opposite effect, which is why none of them are in the playoff roster thus far.
When did the Dodgers start winning? We’re they wanted to make sure they won the West. They beat the better teams and lost against lesser teams. But the best way to approach it, but asserting dominance over potential playoff opponents is a real thing.
So you think Roberts makes the roster decisions? Interesting. Does he also makes the hotel reservations?
“(Dean has) been used almost exclusively as a pinch runner by Los Angeles.”
He was used mostly as a defensive replacement (much like in the Division Series).
True story. Whether Dean or Kim make the roster depends on which one gives them the most defensive flexibility. I think it’s Kim making the cut.
Dean is a nice story but Kim has more defensive flexibility as well as speed and swings a decent bat. How it can even be much of a choice between those two is a mystery. Then again it took a cyst to shelve Scott over Wrobleski. Overall pretty happy w roster choices so far.
“Dean is a nice story but Kim has more defensive flexibility as well as speed and swings a decent bat.”
They really don’t need Kim’s versatility, though. He’d be #3 on the depth chart (at best) at basically every position. It’s unlikely he’d ever see time in the infield, so really it comes down to who you trust more in the outfield: Dean or Kim. Clearly, they prefer Dean. Kim’s bat is better, but, again, would it ever be used?
Are they really comfortable with Kim’s OF defense over Dean’s? They used Dean more in the division series, and outfield is clearly a greater need right now than the infield, particularly since Edman is limited to the infield for now.
Not arguing for either one, just think, if anything, they’ve indicated they have more use for Dean right now.
They know now baby!! Go Brew Crew!!
God Bless!!
Here’s to a fun series! Go Dodgers!
Great series coming up!
Nottheyankees vs. Nottheyankees and Nottheyankees vs. Nottheyankees.
It’s doesn’t get any better than that.
Could be better if all 4 teams were also Notthedodgers.
Did anyone notice Treinen’s presence in the bullpen still? The MUST leave him off the roster
The Dodgers trust his material. He’s a bit of a Sasaki situation in that the pieces have to fall back into place. Sasaki found it — can Treinen? The postseason is a risky place to find out.
Who would you replace him with?
Hernandez career OPS – .707
Hernadez career playoff OPS- .869
“Meanwhile” has to START the sentence, not come in the middle between commas.
The Los Angeles Dodgers successfully purchased their second World Series victory in as many years!
The attempt to complete the purchase was put in jeopardy by the upstart Toronto Blue Jays, but the Dodgers’ front office remained confident that their amazing achievement of spending more money than all the other teams would pay off.
