10:37am: The Phillies have discussed the possibility of hiring Mattingly to serve as bench coach under manager Rob Thomson, according to a report from Jim Salisbury of PHLY Sports.
10:19am: Don Mattingly is leaving the Blue Jays following their heartbreaking loss to the Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series last week. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that Mattingly won’t return to the Jays organization in 2026 after serving as their bench coach for the past three seasons. Notably, Heyman adds that Mattingly is not leaving the Jays with the intention of retiring from baseball and would be open to “the right job” if the opportunity presents itself.
That could include a managerial gig, which would be the third of Mattingly’s career. The 2020 NL Manager of the Year has 11 years of managerial experience between his time with the Dodgers and Marlins. He’s made the postseason four times as a manager and has a career 889-950 record in the dugout. The Padres have yet to settle on their next manager after Mike Shildt stepped down last month, and the Rockies have left interim manager Warren Schaeffer’s fate undecided while they focus on a search for the next leader of their front office.
That leaves two plausible places where Mattingly could land as a skipper this winter, though it’s unclear if either team actually has interest in him for the role. San Diego has reportedly already settled on a group of finalists and could be nearing a decision, while the Rockies’ preferences in the dugout won’t be known until there’s a new head of baseball operations who can be tasked with making that decision.
Even as Heyman specifically notes Mattingly would have interest in managing, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the only job that would hold appeal to the longtime veteran of the game. In addition to his lengthy career as a coach, Mattingly also has 14 years in the majors (including an MVP award in 1985) with the Yankees as a player. Mattingly’s resume and decades of baseball experience should make him someone who would be a valuable addition to almost any club in one role or another.
While Mattingly is currently seeking his next job in the game, this winter could prove to be a busy one for him. The 64-year-old is one of eight players who is on this year’s Hall of Fame Era Committee ballot. If at least 12 out of 16 panelists give Mattingly the nod, he’ll enter Cooperstown next summer. The results of that vote will be announced just over a month from now on December 7.
As for the Blue Jays, manager John Schneider will need to find a new bench coach for the 2026 season. That’s assuming that Schneider himself is returning to the Jays next year. He, like Mattingly, is on an expiring contract this winter. There’s little reason to expect that Schneider wouldn’t return to the Jays after their phenomenal 2025 campaign, however. Clarity on the specifics of the Jays’ coaching staff and any other changes that will be made aside from Mattingly’s departure could come later today, as team president Mark Shapiro and GM Ross Atkins are set to make themselves available to the media for an end-of-season presser later today.

Make it happen, Cashman.
There are people who are just better suited to Bench Coach than Manager. Brad Mills and Don Zimmer come to mind. I think Don Mattingly probable falls into this category.
DBH – Nobody has said this here, but it sure seems like Don’s relationship with management was not good. If he’s looking for a promotion of some kind, there was no need to resign before landing another gig.
DBH… couldn’t you have mentioned this before 1978??? Maybe we wouldn’t have had to wait 86 for our beloved???LOL!!! For what it’s worth, my older brothers favorite manager from playoff Cubs team in 80’s!!!
When Zimmer first came to the Yankees, he rented Bucky Dent’s house. Every room had a picture of Dent’s home run. Salty.
Whyhayzee.. Bill Lee’s nickname… gerbil… spot on… what a great baseball guy Zim was…3rd base coach on Carbos blast if I’m correct….
He’s just not capable of providing any value. Baseball has passed him by. Schneider was stuck with him and getting rid of Donny was one condition for Schneider to return.
Ok, i’ll bit… this is the most narrow minded comment i have read here for quite some time. There, does that make you happy?
I think that is scout eyes or something like that. He says stuff with no proof and doesn’t back it up other than his great expertise and watching baseball.
The guy you are thinking of that used to say scout eyes all the time was Jimmertee. Does he have a new handle now?
Never Remember has to be one of the absolute worst commenters on TradeRumors bar none, chandlerbing a close second.
Im waiting on a bench coach with the ability to add 20 games in the win column through his svengali like approach to passing along messages to the other end of the bench. I don’t want to knock the gig. But it’s a presence position. Donnie Baseball is presence for sure.
Yanks 2323… hmm I wonder how Donny would have faired with THIS Dodgers club.. Don like Tek in Boston is well versed and well respected, oh and a class act!!!
Maybe he’s interviewing for one of the managerial openings?
It’s down to the Padres and the Rockies and taking the Rockies job would be worse than retirement
Hmm not sure then about a managing position. I really doubt he’s going to the Rockies, pretty sure Donnie Baseball wants to be on a winning team.
Padres just hired a manager
He will be the next Phillies manager. Maybe mid-season 2026.
Baby come back!
Why can’t we just give this a go, Yanks? Giving Don another chance to win the big one here and then retire here is a fantastic fantasy that needs fulfillment!
Cashman isn’t going to fire Boone or Ausmus
🙁
He could just do what the Jays did when they demoted Mattingly by adding an associate manager above the bench coach.
Oh cool scenario would be adding Donnie then going all Dodger deferal on the entire free agent market. Just literally sit back and bid up the Dodgers all winter. Just go all in F it.
If Hal is going full Evil Empire, why would he need Donnie?
@YankeesBleacherCreature
Don Mattingly Day to draw fans to a Tuesday afternoon game?
Yankee fans remember this: he underachieved with the Dodgers for all those years and Roberts stepped in and immediately took them to the next level.
To be fair, Mattingly got the boot right before the emergence of Seager and Bellinger….
Exploding an already big payroll and getting every elite player from Japan as a matter of course may have had a lot more to do with it.
Mattingly had Kershaw and Greinke and couldn’t get the World Series. He didn’t know how to manage a bullpen. Roberts isn’t perfect, but he’s gotten much better over the years and has learned from his mistakes.
Roberts has been manager since 2016…
There were a few other factors like Seager, Bellinger, Buehler, & Urias early in Doc’s time as manager that Mattingly didn’t really have.
But Roberts’ communication with his guys did make him a far better manager than Mattingly and most other managers.
As another said earlier ( at this point in his career), it seems like Mattingly is better suited to be bench coach.
AI can manage the Dodgers now, and would probably be LA’s preferred manager actually
In about 1,900 games before he managed the Yankees, Joe Torre’s managing record was .471, Torre was .605 in about 1,900 games managing the Yankees. Mattingly has also managed about 1,900 games. His W/L is .483, with most of those losses coming with the Marlins. He managed the Dodgers (he actually replaced Torre) for five seasons. They won the Division his last three years. In his final seasoon they won the division with a 92-70 record. The following year, with Roberts at the helm, they won the division with a 91-71 record. Mattingly’s last team lost the NLDS 3-2. Roberts first team won the NLDS 3-2 and lost 4-2 to the ultimate champion Cubs. And while you might credit Roberts for that slight improvement, it more likely has to do with Corey Seager’s Rookie of the Year season and a full healthy season from Chase Utley. Not saying Mattingly’s the right guy for the Yankee job, although I think he couldn’t do worse than Aaron Boone.
The Dodgers also had a middling payroll for half of Donnie’s managerial tenure.
Torre inherited a team full of cheating Roid users that Gorge Steingrabber gave billions of dollars to so the Yankees could win at all costs.
No Ballinger, no Mookie, no Sasaki, no Ohtani….the list goes on to include all the role players who have had a hand in them winning……..so blame Mattingly for not getting to the promised land…..pretty short sided comment…
Donnie Baseball!
Hopefully this was Don wanting a managerial/higher level position instead of the Jays showing minimal interest in keeping him. There is no doubt that he was instrumental in John’s development as a manager.
Now, getting rid of the base coaches…
I had no idea he was the blue Jays bench coach.
Heard he had a position with a PWBL team….
I know Donnie Baseball is a much loved figure around the game, but to be honest, I’m not sure what he really contributed as a bench coach. Demarlo Hale is the associate manager and pitching coach Pete Walker was always right by Schneider’s side.
I think Mattingly had the title, but not the duties you’d normally associate with a bench coach. I doubt it will be a loss for the Jays and Schneider can bring in his own guy now.
